London: 1679-1680. The Popish plot was as fabricated conspiracy theory that there was a plot to murder Charles II so that his Catholic brother James could inherit the throne. The issue was the focus of a frenzy of pamphleteering and popular anxiety, as the above shows, and multiple attempts to enact laws to prevent a Catholic from becoming monarch, which failed. Major players included Thomas Dangerfield, a career criminal who claimed he had been asked to assassinate the King by Lady Powess; Elizabeth Cellier, a prominent Catholic midwife who advocated for imprisoned Catholics and was accused of conspiracy by Dangerfield after she withheld charity from him; Roger Earl of Castlemaine, a Catholic who was accused of high treason but won acquittal after serving as his own advocate in court; a number of other accusers who jumped the bandwagon for fame and fortune, and so on. A collection of folio pamphlets concerning the Popish plot and exclusion crisis, as follows: Popish Damnable Plot against our religion and liberties fairly laid open and discovered in the Breviats of threescore and four letters and papers of intelligence past. London: printed for R. Janeway, 1680, pp. [2], 31, [1], lacking the blank preliminary; text sometimes attributed to Ezerel Tonge. Map of Crete - Frederick de Wit, c. 1680
1680. MAP OF CRETE "Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. "Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm. One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by SÃ bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish-Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea. On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda.

BOYLE, Robert
Oxford: Henry Hall for R. Davis and B. Took, 1680. Second edition of the 'Sceptical Chemist,' first edition of 'Experiments and Notes.' This is "the most famous book in the history of chemistry" (Neville) and Boyle's "most important work [in which he] set down his corpuscular theory of the constitution of matter, which finally freed chemistry from the restrictions of the Greek concept of the four elements, and was the forerunner of Dalton's atomic theory" (Sparrow). "Boyle's most celebrated book is his 'Sceptical Chymist' . . . It contains the germs of many ideas elaborated by Boyle in his later publications" (Partington II, p. 496). "The importance of Boyle's book must be sought in his combination of chemistry with physics. His corpuscular theory, and Newton's modification of it, gradually led chemists towards an atomic view of matter. Boyle distinguished between mixtures and compounds and tried to understand the latter in terms of the simpler chemical entities from which they could be constructed. His argument was designed to lead chemists away from the pure empiricism of his predecessors and to stress the theoretical, experimental and mechanistic elements of chemical science. The 'Sceptical Chymist' is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century" (PMM). Printed for Andew Crooke, London, 1680. Third edition. Engraved title, folding chart. [iv], 2, [v-vi], 3-394 pp. Collation: A-3D^4, Introduction (A4) and Contents (A3) bound out-of-order. Folio. There were three separate editions (not "issues," as they are sometimes mistakenly referred to) of Hobbes' classic, with a title-page dated 1651. This is the third, actually printed around 1680, and distinguished by the triangle of type ornaments on the title-page and modernized spelling. "The present is a paginary reprint of the first edition, even to the extent that the copy was divided between two shops at the same point, for before Sig Cc the marginal notes have paragraph indentation while after they do not" (Pforzheimer) Hobbes' famous essay on the origin of the State created (and still creates) a storm of controversy, since for Hobbes even the most repugnant authoritarian government is to be preferred over that celebrated Hobbesian state of nature in which anarchic life is "nasty, brutish and short." For Hobbes "the State . might be regarded as a great artificial monster made up of individual men, with an existence which could be traced from its generation through human reason under pressure of human needs to its destruction through civil strife proceeding from human passions. The individual (except to save his own life) should always submit to the State, because any government is better than the anarchy of the natural state" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Nicolas de Blegny
ont>, 1680. A very smart copy of this scarce German translation of Nicolas de Blegny's notable medical journal. Frequently regarded as the first French medical journal. First thus, the first edition of Johann Lange's translation. It seems that Lange was a prolific translator, having produced the first German edition of the Koran in 1688. Four parts in one volume with separate title pages, as called for. With seven folding engraved or woodcut plates and numerous in-text illustrations. The illustrations include a foetus, conjoined twins, bones in a hand and a cactus from America. Engraved title page. In a lovely contemporary vellum binding, with functioning clasps. Nicolas de Blegny became the physician to the Duc d'Orleans, Queen Marie Therese and King Louis XIV of France. Following accusations of plagiarism and fraud he fell from grace and was incarcerated for eight years. Prior to this, Blegny wrote several works, such as reviews on coffee, tea and chocolate, he founded the first medical journal, 'Nouvelles Decouvertes' and also wrote on many doctrines This medical journal looks at the most recent discoveries in medicine at the time of publication. Its French title is 'Les nouvelles decouvertes sur toutes les parties de la medicine'. This was first published in 1679 and originally reported the transactions of his society, the Academy of Recent Discoveries in Medicine. The medical journal was later published after three years as a collection titled 'Zodiacus Medico-Gallicus'. With separate title pages to each section as called for. A very scarce work. OWEN, John
London: for Nathaniel Ponder, at the sign of the Peacock, 1680. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Owen was a 17th-century English theologian whose Puritan ideals appeared throughout his sermons and published works. One of his most important works was his commentary on the Epistle of Hebrews from the New Testament. This commentary was so massive that, at over 2 million words, it is still "one of the longest commentaries ever published on any New Testament epistle. It also was notable for providing context and references to rabbinical literature." (Gribben, 235-6). [Attributes: First Edition]
