A so called optical print of the vessel Purfleet navigating on the River Thames in Essex, England. Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Old hand colouring. Description: Published by the brothers Chereau, active in Paris at rue St. Jacques au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin aux 2 colonnes No 257. Artists and Engravers: Francois Chereau was born in 1680 in Blois, it is unknown when he settled in Paris. He was student of Gerard Audran and Pierre Drevet. In 1718 he acquired the stock of copperplates and prints of his tutor Gerard Audran. He was a very talented engraver. After his death in 1729 the copperplates were sold by his widow. His brother Jacques (le jeune) (1688-1776) was also engravers and publisher and worked for one year in England. He was well known as engraver of portraits. Condition: Fine. General age related toning and occasional light staining from handling as visible on scans. Some creasing. Storage location: B17-18 The overall size is ca. 15.7 x 9.8 inch. 1680. Antique print, titled: 'Prospectus Ingrussus Templum Solis in Palmira Versu Orientem ( ).' - View of the entry of the Temple of the Sun at Palmyra ( Syria ) as seen from the east. This is an optical print, also called 'vue optique' or 'vue d'optique', which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Francois Chereau' after an anonymous artist. Francois Chereau was born in 1680 in Blois, it is unknown when he settled in Paris. He was student of Gerard Audran and Pierre Drevet.
