London: Moses Pitt, 1680. 360 x 520mm. Narrow margins, minor repairs to binding folds on verso. A fine impression. The first English edition of Tavernier's map of Japan, first publshed the previous year, augmented with an inset of the Gulf of Tonkin, originally a separate map in the original work. Mallet Alain Manesson (1630 - 1706) Paris
Artist: Mallet Alain Manesson ca ; issued in: Paris; date: ca1680 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 15 x 10; - description: Map shows the old world with the South Pole.; - vita of the artist: Alain Manesson Mallet (1630- 1706 ) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. His major publications were Description de L'Univers (1683) in 5 volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre (1684) in 3 volumes. His Description de L'Universe contains a wide variety of information, including star maps, maps of the ancient and modern world, and a synopsis of the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in his text. It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to his being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in the charming harbor scenes and rural landscapes that he included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Mallet himself drew most of the figures that were engraved for this book.

Machiavelli, Niccolo
London: Printed for John Starkey, Charles Harper, and John Amery, 1680. Second edition in English of the works of Machiavelli, an important work of political science which includes The Prince. Folio, bound in full calf, elaborate gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, marbled endpapers. Includes: The History of Florence; The Prince; The Discourses of Nicholas Machiavel, Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius; and The Art of War (this last work is incomplete in this copy). Each with a separate dated title page but pagination and register are continuous. Also includes "Nicholas Machiavel's letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius", which is not in fact by Machiavelli but by Henry Neville. Translation attributed to Henry Neville. Wing M128. In very good condition. Although it is relatively short, Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative and is often considered to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal.

The publication is still considered to be a valuable early history of the legal profession. Illustrated with 8 full-page portrait engravings of Edward Coke, Ranulph Crewe, Robert Heath, John Clench, Edward Hide, Orlando Bridgeman, John Selden, John Vaughan, and numerous in-text Coats of Arms and some pictorial steel engravings in b/w. In the preface Dugdale exerts: "I am to advertise my Reader, that though I have adventur'd upon a Catalog of Law-Writers, and Law-Books, I dare not say, that those whereof I have taken notice, are all of that kind; for in private Studies some other Manuscripts, and perhaps also some Printed Discourses, may be yet foun … [Click Below for Full Description]
