GROTIUS, Hugo,
Amsterdam (Amstelaedami), apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1680. Editio novissima. 8vo. Gestochener Titelkupfer und gestochene ganzseitige Justitia-Darstellung, Tb. in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, 3 Bll., XX, 680 S., 7 Bll., 31 S., 5 Bll., 216 S., 54 Bll. Neuer gediegener Halblederband. - Vgl. Ter Meulen/D. 582. PHILOSTRATUS (Blount, Charles, Tr.)
PHILOSTRATUS (Blount, Charles, Tr.) The Two First Books, of Philostratus, Concerning the Life of Apollonius Tyaneus London, Printed for Nathaniel Thompson, 1680. £1250 FIRST EDITION. Folio, pp. (viii) 243 (i), A-2G4 2H6. Roman and Italic letter. Title-page in black and red. Full-page woodcut chart on p. 145. Bound in contemporary mottled calf with morocco panels, blind-tooled and rebacked; covers, edges and corners restored. Inner hinges reinforced with woven tape. Some waterstaining throughout, a little light browning. A good copy. Philostratus “the Athenian” was a Greek sophist of the Roman Imperial period. He is remembered for two works in particular: Lives of the Sophists and Life of Apollonius of Tyana. The latter was written between 217 and 238 AD, and tells the story of Apollonius of Tyana (c. 40 – c. 120 AD), a Pythagorean philosopher and teacher. Philostratus wrote the book for Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus and mother of Caracalla. The translator Charles Blount (1653-1693) was one of the leading deists of his time. He published the first of his major works, Anima Mundi, in 1679. It is an essay on pagan doctrines about the nature of the human soul and its destiny in the afterlife, drawing heavily on Montaigne. His Philostratus consists largely of his own notes to Philostratus, with roughly four pages of Blount to one of Philostratus. His commentary draws attention to analogies between Christ and Apollonius of Tyana, the miracle working mystic (or sham magician) Greek philosopher born just before Christ. Iuan García Infanzon a costa de Gabriel de L con, Mercader de Libros, Madrid, 1680. "Jesuitica - Brasiliana - No Copies Of This edition in US Libraries". 4to. 10ll. 415pp. 42ll. Rare Spanish edition of the collection of 15 sermons by Father Vieira delivered in America, Portugal and Rome. Father Vieira was an influential Jesuit preacher and diplomat who is especially known for his work in the Brazilian missions. Two of the sermons contained in the book were delivered in the missions and have references to them. Father Antonio Vieira, Jesuit missionary, renowned preacher and writer played an important role in European and Latin American politics. He was convinced that the Portuguese were destined to lead the Catholic Church in its mission to convert the Jews of Europe and the natives of the New World to Christianity. After various diplomatic missions in Europe he left for Brazil in November 1652 to devote himself to the Indian missions. Believing that language should never serve as a barrier to saving Indian souls, from 1650 he advocated an educational strategy which would be adapted to the needs of the Amazon missions with an emphasis on the study of the Indian languages. He played an important part in bringing under Jesuit control the slaving expeditions carried out by the Portuguese. WorldCat: no copies of this edition in US Libraries. Modern gilt blue morocco by the leading Barcelona binder Emilio Brugalla (1901-87), also active in Madrid, signed at the foot of the front turn-in: "Brugalla 1946", with the arms of the Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernandez (1878-1963) stamped in gold on front and back in a blind-stamped panel, double fillets on binding edges and richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. First edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller's hats … [Click Below for Full Description]

Biblioth. curieuse III, 270.- Brunet I, 837. Frederick De Wit
Amsterdam: F. De Wit, ca. 1680. 19 x 22. Engraving. Original hand color. Short separation at top of centerfold. Otherwise, very good condition.A lovely seventeenth century map of the Poland by Frederick de Wit. De Wit followed in the footsteps of the earlier Dutch cartographic publishers Jansson and Blaeu, and like them, he issued maps known for their beautiful engraving and hand coloring. Detail is dense and accurate, with the political regions distinguished by the attractive hand colored borders. The map documents Poland at the end of its golden ear, shortly after "The Deluge" which marked the beginning of its decline. This map shows Poland at its great extent, when it consisted of the Polish-Lithuanian Confederation and was the largest country in Europe. A title cartouche in the top right corner is supported by four putti, adding a decorative flourish to this fascinating map

DAPPER, Olfert
1680 Dapper ASIA Turkey Arabia Assyria MAPS Babylon Persia Botany Iraq Nineveh Olfert Dapper was an important 17th-century Dutch physician who made his name from his geography books, even though he never left the Netherlands. “Naukeurige beschryving van Asie” or ‘Description of Asia’ was Dapper’s attempt at describing the Middle East and Western Asia. He discusses important aspects of Arabs particularly their religious affiliations to Mahomet. He also covers cities and ports, trade and goods distributions, animals, cultural and social aspects, government and politics, and national alliances. This 1680 Dutch edition is beautifully illustrated with 30 incredible copper engravings and maps. While all of the illustrations are stunning, the double-page city view of Nineveh is particularly desirable. Other nations described include Iraq, Assyria, Babylon, and Yemen. Special attention is paid to the botanical interests in these areas, including illustrations of indigenous plants and flowers. Manuscript in scroll. Upper Armenia, 1680. 13 meters 87 cm in length (42,9 ft). 9 cm in width (3,5 inch). Composed of 35 pieces glued together. Text written in one column. 31 illuminated miniatures, 44 ornamented book initials. The manuscript is complete. Tears and wears of the scroll, with minor marginal losses, generally scroll is preserved quite well, no recent restoration was done. Extraordinary survival. The tradition of hmail amulets in Armenian culture dates back to the 15th century (the earliest known example is from 1428). They were created in different parts of Armenia and were made for the travellers. Usually the scroll consisted of the prayers and spells with some elements of 'folk Christianity' as well. According to the major specialist in scrolls Davit Ghazaryan (Matenadaran, Scientific Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts named after Mesrop Mashtots, Yerevan, Armenia), who examined our manuscript, it was written in Bardzr Hajq in the Upper Armenia. Most probably the miniatures and text were done by the same person who signed his name in the colophon adding the date as well. The collophone translates: 'The book for protection was rewritten by the hand of sinful deakon Jakob, who is from the province Vorotna, from the village Aghuerdz. Amen. For enjoyment of Čianshah, Msrshah and Halapshah, the sons of khoja Paghtasar, who is from the province Arzrum, from the Papert city. It was written on 1129 of the Armenian era (=1680) on May 13'. According to Ghazaryan none other example of Jakob's work is known, although the whole area is pretty well-res … [Click Below for Full Description]

Molto decorativa. Map of north Italy with relief shown pictorially. Copper engraving, finely colored by hand, in excellent state of preservation. Very decorative.

Ref: Hollstein 65.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Gerard Valck' after 'Sir Peter Lely'. Gerard Valck / Gerardus Valk (1652-1726) was an engraver and a printseller in Amsterdam. He was specialized in cartography and globes. His Celestial and Earth globes were innovative, based on the latest scientific information with less text and images, while his competitors sticked with the Blaeu designs based on Tycho Brahe. As such the Valck/Schenk firm gained an absolute monopoly in globe-making and selling that were sold throughout the 18th c. Sir Peter Lely(1618-1680) was a painter ofDutchorigin, whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. Condition: Very good, given age.
