GRELOT Guillaume-Joseph
1680. First edition. 13 plans & views, ten of which are folding and including the spectacular panorama, with four further costume engravings in the text. Contemporary calf, nicely rebacked. Interior pages very clean and fresh. Majority of plates in excellent condition, the second and eighth with small closed tears, discreet linen reinforcements to the third. xii, 307pp. Paris, Pierre Rocolet, Grelot wandered the streets of Constantinople dressed as a Turk and was thus able to gain access to mosques, and other places of interest. His systematic plans of St. Sophia remained the best available until the work of Texier and Fossati one hundred and fifty years later. The most famous plate is the extraordinary panorama of the 'Grand Serrail de Constantinople', a lovely impression here, though with one or two repairs (without loss) to the folds. ?Through the acts of describing and depicting, Grelot inscribes Constantinople as subject to his design. He imposes his artistic will and captures the city's likeness. He especially devotes energy and space to setting forth the religious customs, practices, and monuments of Islam -- as if these were the mainstays of Ottoman power that constituted the real challenge to a French take-over. His descriptions, diagrams, snatches of bookish history, along with his casual anecdotes all point, however discreetly, to a religious orientation as key to the Ottoman world (and to French national sentiment).? Michèle Longino, Duke university. A nice tight copy of this famous work. Blackmer 750. [Attributes: First Edition]

The second bound work, a treatise comparable in intention to the first, and well-suited to collective binding, is the first edition done into English of Bona's guide to Christ … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAPPER, Olfert.
Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs, 1680. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs,, 1680. behelsende de Gewesten van Mesopotamie, Babylonie, Assyrie, Anatolie, of Klein Asie: beneffens eene volkome Beschrijving van gansch Gellukigh, Woest, en Petreesch of Steenigh Arabie. 2 parts bound in 1, folio (317 x 194 mm). Letterpress title printed in red and black; engraved pictorial title, 12 double-page engraved view (2 also folding), 3 double-page maps, 22 half-page plates. Bookplate of Heyse-Tak; front board has "sprung", 19th-century repair to fore edge of engraved title. An attractive copy in a contemporary binding. First edition of Dapper's Asia Minor and Mesopotamia; a German edition followed in 1681. In common with contemporaries such as John Ogilby, the Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1639-1689) never travelled to visit the lands he wrote about, instead compiling extant translations and other eye-witness accounts to produce lavish and encyclopaedic books for the northern European readership. His and others work thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples. Dapper was meticulous in using hundreds of published sources and several unpublished ones for each of his books; he did not lift whole passages from one book, but often based a single paragraph on two or three different sources. In this sense his work is indispensible to modern scholarship, as it reflects manuscript sources that have since been lost. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Niccolò Machiavelli
London: Starkey, Harper, Amery, 1680. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly & faithfully translated into English. The highly sought-after, incredibly scarce literary collectible by the father of modern political thought. Folio.  Eleven works in one. Complete with general title and separate title for each work.  Woodcut chapter initials and headpieces.  This is the rare 1680 First Edition in English of the works of the genius Machiavelli including his two most famous works, The Prince and The Art of War.  His writings forever changed how we look at politics and governance.  It has become a true injustice that his name now retains such a malevolent association.   Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a true Renaissance Man: a political philosopher, musician, playwright and poet.  His most famous work, The Prince, espouses the earliest known realistic approach to maintaining rule (known today as realpolitik).  Although he was maligned for proposing despotic rule, this interpretation of his work is inaccurate; what he stated is that evil actions are to be used only very sparingly, if at all.  This stands in contrast to his other work, Discourses Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius, which strongly supported rule by a republic, including an entire system of checks & balances.  Indeed, he felt that a republic was a far superior form of government than a principality. Regarding The Prince, it states in Printing and the Mind of Man [63, Wing M129]: “Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind — it should be remembered that a parallel work to The … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is to his inventive mind that we owe one of the earliest of our counting machines: the speaking-tube and æolian harp were perfected by him. He was also the inventor of the magic lantern which has since been brought to such perfection and is today almost indispensable.” VOOGHT, Claes Jansz. [after] Jan Jansz STAMPIOEN
[c1680-1696]. Large engraved celestial chart with a rotating printed paper ring (volvelle or rete) on an off-centre axis to indicate the part of the sky visible at any date and time and to make a variety of celestial calculations, all for the Netherlands' latitude of 52 degrees. A string with two beads serves as a pointer for aligning the scales in the stationary and rotating parts. With engraved instructions also by Vooght. Coloured by a contemporary hand and mounted on contemporary boards covered with marbled paper, apparently by the publisher, so that it can be folded in half for carrying. The string may be a modern replacement. Vooght's rare star chart and astronomical calculator, here separately issued in portfolio form and in its first state. The chart shows the stars visible from 52 degrees latitude in a polar equidistant projection, with a rotating volvelle or rete to indicate the part of the sky visible at a particular moment. The circular border around the sky image and the outer part of the volvelle include scales with several kinds of data so that the chart can be used for various purposes. One can use the string to align the time in the volvelle with the date in the border of the chart, so that the part of the sky visible at that moment appears inside the volvelle. The chart with its volvelle, scales and string can also be used to calculate times for the rising … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam, 1680. [c1680] Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. First large-scale Dutch chart of Cuba and Jamaica - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hague: Very good. Light toning and occasional spotting or foxing. Some underlining and small side notes. A very nice copy, definitely attractive. Please view photos for additional details. Grotius, Hugo (1583-1645). - Hagae Comitis: Apud Arnoldum Leers, 1680. Title page printed in red and black. The work has side- and shouldernotes, and an added engraved title-page. Binding: brown leather with golden ornamental embossments and with a red ribbon, the edges of the book are painted in red; marbled paper sides. De jure belli ac pacis (On the Law of War and Peace) was laid in the 16th century by Spanish theologians Francisco de Vitoria, Francisco Suarez, Bartolomé de las Casas, and Ginés de Sepulveda as they struggled with the legitimacy of making war on the Indians of the New World. Grotius saw his book published for the first time in 1625 at Paris: It studies the legality of war and immediately established itself as a foundational work on the topic. Modern scholars regard it as foundational in international law. This edition contains added scholarship from Joannes Fredericus Gronovius. In addition to De jure belli ac pacis the reader will find two other important Grotius tracts at the rear of the volume: Mare liberum and Libellus singularis de aequitate, indulgentia et facilitate, meaning the volume treats not just of law of war, but natural law, international law, mariti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolomeo Zappata, Torino, 1680.

Map published for the first time in the Atlas Major, 1680 circa. "...a first step in obtaining liberty by law to enjoy our religious meetings for the worship of God peaceably, without molestation or disturbance by informers or other persons, yet many of our friends remained prisoners, and under prosecution by priests and magistrates, for non-payment of tithes, and kept them detained in prison, chiefly on contempts, as their term is for not swearing upon oath to the priests' bills and complaints." - George Whitehead, on treatment of Quakers. This work by George Whitehead is an account of suffering and imprisoned Quakers who were persecuted for their faith and way of life. "A Brief Account" was written to assist in Whitehead's defense of the right to practice the Quaker religion, but its most important aspect is its detailed examination of Quaker life. Whitehead's advocating of religious freedom had a direct impact on the passing of the Act of Uniformity and other laws.

DAPPER, Olfert
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Olfert Dapper was an important 17th-century Dutch physician who made his name from his geography books, even though he never left the Netherlands. "Naukeurige beschryving van Asië" or 'Description of Asia' was Dapper's attempt at describing the Middle East and Western Asia. He discusses important aspects of Arabs particularly their religious affiliations to Mahomet. He also covers cities and ports, trade and goods distributions, animals, cultural and social aspects, government and politics, and national alliances. This 1680 Dutch edition is beautifully illustrated with 30 incredible copper engravings and maps. While all of the illustrations are stunning, the double-page city view of Nineveh is particularly desirable. Other nations described include Iraq, Assyria, Babylon, and Yemen. Special attention is paid to the botanical interests in these areas, including illustrations of indigenous plants and flowers. [Attributes: First Edition]
