Coronelli Vicenzo Maria (1650 - 1718) Venice
Artist: Coronelli Vicenzo Maria ca ; issued in: Venice; date: ca1680 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 37,5 x 27,5; - description: Map depicts on the front and on reverse, Fort Carababa on the island Creta. The island is first referred to as Kaptara in texts from the Syrian city of Mari dating from the 18th century BC, repeated later in Neo-Assyrian records and the Bible (Caphtor). It was also known in ancient Egyptian as Keftiu, strongly suggesting some form similar to both was the Minoan name for the island. Vincenzo Coronelli was born, probably in Venice, August 15, 1650, the fifth child of a Venetian tailor named Maffio Coronelli. At ten, young Vincenzo was sent to the city of Ravenna and was apprenticed to a xylographer. In 1663 he was accepted into the Conventual Franciscans, becoming a novice in 1665. At age sixteen he published the first of his one hundred forty separate works. In 1671 he entered the Convent of Saint Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, and in 1672 Coronelli was sent by the order to the College of Saint Bonaventura and Saints Apostoli in Rome where he earned his doctor?s degree in theology in 1674. He excelled in the study of both astronomy and Euclid. A little before 1678, Coronelli began working as a geographer and was commissioned to make a set of terrestrial and celestial globes for Ranuccio II Farnese, Duke of Parma. Each finely crafted globe was five feet in diameter (c. 175cm) and so impressed the Duke that he made Coronelli his theologian. Coronelli's renown as a theologian grew and in 1699 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mallet Alain Manesson (1630 - 1706) Paris
Artist: Mallet Alain Manesson ca ; issued in: Paris; date: ca1680 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 15 x 10; - description: Map shows the old world with the South Pole.; - vita of the artist: Alain Manesson Mallet (1630- 1706 ) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. His major publications were Description de L'Univers (1683) in 5 volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l'Art de la Guerre (1684) in 3 volumes. His Description de L'Universe contains a wide variety of information, including star maps, maps of the ancient and modern world, and a synopsis of the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in his text. It has been suggested that his background as a teacher led to his being concerned with entertaining his readers. This concern manifested itself in the charming harbor scenes and rural landscapes that he included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Mallet himself drew most of the figures that were engraved for this book.

Machiavelli, Niccolo
London: Printed for John Starkey, Charles Harper, and John Amery, 1680. Second edition in English of the works of Machiavelli, an important work of political science which includes The Prince. Folio, bound in full calf, elaborate gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, marbled endpapers. Includes: The History of Florence; The Prince; The Discourses of Nicholas Machiavel, Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius; and The Art of War (this last work is incomplete in this copy). Each with a separate dated title page but pagination and register are continuous. Also includes "Nicholas Machiavel's letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius", which is not in fact by Machiavelli but by Henry Neville. Translation attributed to Henry Neville. Wing M128. In very good condition. Although it is relatively short, Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative and is often considered to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal.
