Breslau, Gottfried Gründer und Baumann Erben, 1680. Folio, circa 32 x 20,5 cm. Kupfertitel, 12 Bll., 203 SS., 12 Bll., 10 Kupfer mit Ansichten, 1 grosse, merfach gefaltete Kupfertafel mit Portrait und Stammbaum Neueres Halb-Pergament aus altem Material. - ADB XXIII, S. 261; vgl. Conrads. [Click Below for Full Description]

ERASMUS, Desiderius
London : Printed by Tho. Newcomb, for Henry Brome, 1680. 1680 English 1ed Colloquies Erasmus Rotterdam Humanism Rhetoric WAR Philosophy “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.” Erasmus Erasmus’s famous ‘Colloquies’ is a collection of humanistic dialogues on a wide variety of subjects, most of which explore man’s reactions to other men through conversation. Erasmus, and his pupils, wrote on war, travel, religion, sleep, beggars, funerals, literature, and other topics. According to one expert, ‘Colloquies’ “held up contemporary religious practices for examination in a more serious but still pervasively ironic tone.” (Coffin) This work exposed some of Erasmus’s humor through the invention of word games and rhetoric exercises used for education. MENTZER, Balthasar]
1680. Finely engraved vignette on title (inner portion of image slightly obscured by the wrapper). [4] leaves. Small 4to, modern wrappers. Frankfurt: 1680. First edition of one of the earliest publications on the famous comet of 1680-81. Apart from its brightness, this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope (by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg). Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke, Flamsteed, Newton, and John Evelyn. Mentzer (1651-1727), was professor of mathematics at the University of Giessen and later, because of his religious convictions, was obliged to move to Hamburg where he taught at the city's gymnasium. The comet was first observed on 14 November 1680 by Kirch; it became quite bright and prominent by the end of that month. Clearly, Mentzer rushed his brief report of the sensational comet into print. Very good copy. Small blank portion of title and third leaf removed. ? Kronk, Cometography, I, pp. 369-73. Poggendorff, II, col. 121. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

VERI (Miguel).
Barcinone, ex Typis Antonii Lacavalleria, s.d. (c.1680). Petit in-8. 48pp. Palau, 360448.

PITT, Moses.
Oxford: Moses Pitt, 1680. Coloured. 460 x 590mm. A few small repairs, pinholes in crest. A scarce map of the Arctic Circle, with the title on a curtain, with portraits of Lapplanders and a whaling scene. On the map the mythical island of Frisland is marked, as is a strait through Greenland, placed there instead of Canada by Martin Frobisher, who had been confused by the non-existence of Frisland. Further west the discoveries of the English explorers looking for the North West Passage are shown. Bottom left are the arms of Charles FitzCharles (1657-80), the son of Charles II, which consists of his father's arms with a baton sinister vair overall, signifying illegitimacy. He died of dysentery defending Tangier, which had been part of his father's dowry when marrying the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza in 1662.

ROGGEVEEN, Arent
Amsterdam, [c1680]. Description Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. NotesThe first large-scale Dutch sea chart of Nigaragua's Caribbean coast with Lake Nicaragua - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'.Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. The publication includes bird's-eye views and plans of the Vatican Gardens, those on Quirinal Hill, and, among others, the Villas Mattei, Pamphili, Borghese, Ludovisi, and Montalto. The gardens were designed by Alessandro Algardi, Carlo Maderno, Ottavio Mascarini, Annibali Lippi, Cavalier Rainaldi, Domenico Fontana, Flaminio Pontico, and Giacomo Del Duca. The book is of particular importance as it shows the gardens before they were destroyed or underwent extensive alterations. As a boy, Falda was sent to Rome to work in the studio of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His skills attracted the attention of the publisher Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi, for whom Falda engraved the series Le fontane di Roma ('Fountains of Rome'), Palazzi di Roma ('Palaces of Rome'), and the present Giardini. His work became very popular among participants of the Grand Tour and tourists in the second half the seventeenth century … [Click Below for Full Description]

1680. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. David Calderwood was a 17th-centur Scottish church historian known primarily for two works, 'Altare Damascenum' and 'The True History of the Church of Scotland.' Calderwood was an important minister where he began writing a directory for public worship in Scotland in 1625, the same year he concluded the work on the history of the Church of Scotland. He focuses on doctrine, church leaders, General Assembly, ecclesiastical institutions within the church, and much more. According to Schaff & Herzog, the histories in this work, "have slight literary merit, but are invaluable as sources, their material having been collected with diligence and fidelity.".
