Niccolò Machiavelli
London: Starkey, Harper, Amery. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly & faithfully translated into English. The highly sought-after, incredibly scarce literary collectible by the father of modern political thought. Folio.  Eleven works in one. Complete with general title and separate title for each work.  Woodcut chapter initials and headpieces.  This is the rare 1680 First Edition in English of the works of the genius Machiavelli including his two most famous works, The Prince and The Art of War.  His writings forever changed how we look at politics and governance.  It has become a true injustice that his name now retains such a malevolent association.   Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a true Renaissance Man: a political philosopher, musician, playwright and poet.  His most famous work, The Prince, espouses the earliest known realistic approach to maintaining rule (known today as realpolitik).  Although he was maligned for proposing despotic rule, this interpretation of his work is inaccurate; what he stated is that evil actions are to be used only very sparingly, if at all.  This stands in contrast to his other work, Discourses Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius, which strongly supported rule by a republic, including an entire system of checks & balances.  Indeed, he felt that a republic was a far superior form of government than a principality. Regarding The Prince, it states in Printing and the Mind of Man [63, Wing M129]: “Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind — it should be remembered that a parallel work to The Princ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Even medicine received his attention. His scientific activities brought him into correspondence with scholars laboring in the most different fields, as the numerous volumes of his extant letters show. It is to his inventive mind that we owe one of the earliest of our counting machines: the speaking-tube and æolian harp were perfected by him. He was also the inventor of the magic lantern which has since been brought to such perfection and is today almost indispensable.” VOOGHT, Claes Jansz. [after] Jan Jansz STAMPIOEN
[c1680-1696]. Large engraved celestial chart with a rotating printed paper ring (volvelle or rete) on an off-centre axis to indicate the part of the sky visible at any date and time and to make a variety of celestial calculations, all for the Netherlands' latitude of 52 degrees. A string with two beads serves as a pointer for aligning the scales in the stationary and rotating parts. With engraved instructions also by Vooght. Coloured by a contemporary hand and mounted on contemporary boards covered with marbled paper, apparently by the publisher, so that it can be folded in half for carrying. The string may be a modern replacement. Vooght's rare star chart and astronomical calculator, here separately issued in portfolio form and in its first state. The chart shows the stars visible from 52 degrees latitude in a polar equidistant projection, with a rotating volvelle or rete to indicate the part of the sky visible at a particular moment. The circular border around the sky image and the outer part of the volvelle include scales with several kinds of data so that the chart can be used for various purposes. One can use the string to align the time in the volvelle with the date in the border of the chart, so that the part of the sky visible at that moment appears inside the volvelle. The chart with its volvelle, scales and string can also be used to calculate times for the rising … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROGGEVEEN, Arent
Amsterdam, 1680. [c1680] Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. First large-scale Dutch chart of Cuba and Jamaica - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern scholars regard it as foundational in international law. This edition contains added scholarship from Joannes Fredericus Gronovius. Brusoni Girolamo
Bartolomeo Zappata, Torino, 1680.

Map published for the first time in the Atlas Major, 1680 circa. It is decorated with cartouches depicting views and plans of Messina, Palermo, Catania and Trapani, and a plan of Messina erroneously called Milazzo. Due to the great outcome, the map was reissued in the first years of 1700 by Covens and Mortier and by the Ottens. The quality of the colour and the paper make us presume it was published by Ottens, around 1730. Copper engraving, in excellent codnition. L. Dufour - A. DAPPER, Olfert
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Olfert Dapper was an important 17th-century Dutch physician who made his name from his geography books, even though he never left the Netherlands. "Naukeurige beschryving van Asië" or 'Description of Asia' was Dapper's attempt at describing the Middle East and Western Asia. He discusses important aspects of Arabs particularly their religious affiliations to Mahomet. He also covers cities and ports, trade and goods distributions, animals, cultural and social aspects, government and politics, and national alliances. This 1680 Dutch edition is beautifully illustrated with 30 incredible copper engravings and maps. While all of the illustrations are stunning, the double-page city view of Nineveh is particularly desirable. Other nations described include Iraq, Assyria, Babylon, and Yemen. Special attention is paid to the botanical interests in these areas, including illustrations of indigenous plants and flowers. [Attributes: First Edition]

[s.l.], n.d. (circa 1680) (Minutes of the Civil and Criminal Ordinances of 1667) 1052pp. manuscript pages on watermarked paper. Folio, full calf. Comprising what appears to be a full manuscript of a final work on legal reform authored by Jean Baptise Colbert. It is separated into two parts, Civil and Criminal. The first page is a table that describes the work as containing "Des Titres de la nouvelle Ordonnance Civile de L'annee 1667" or the titles of the new civil laws for the year 1667 (1-709pp.) followed by "de Titres Conenua en cette Ordonnance pour le Matieres Criminelle" or criminal law (710-1052pp). Similar hand-writing samples provide no firm conclusion; likely in the hand of Colbert or possibly his scribe, Nicolas Joseph Foucault. Provenance: stamped "Bibliotheque Henri Rameau" on the front endpaper. (Henri Rameau Library) Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619 - 1683) was a French politician who served as the Minister of Finances of France from 1665 to 1683 under the rule of King Louis XIV. His relentless hard work and thrift made him an esteemed minister. He achieved a reputation for his work of improving the state of French manufacturing and bringing the economy back from the brink of bankruptcy. Wit, Frederick de (1630-1706)
MAP OF CRETE "Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. "Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm. One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by S?bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish-Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea. On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda. Price: Euro1.450,- ? ?.

ALLAIS, Jean Baptiste.
Becker, Practice of letters 91; Berlin Kat. 5117; Muller, Cat. Calligr., 1; Marzoli 56. First edition of a very elaborate basic writing course and copy book, minutely explaining the composition of the various calligraphic hands (fran?oises, b?tardes, financieres), as well as pen decorations and drawings. The engraved title-page reads, "L'art d'?crire ou Le moyen d'exceler en cet art sans maistre" (suggesting a break with the ancient tradition of learning by apprenticeship or under a school master) and spells the author's name "Allais", while the letterpress title-page spells it "Alais". The course was designed by Jean Baptiste Allais, dit le Beaulieu, and engraved by Louis Senault, who was a leading writing master in his own right and therefore ideally suited to engrave his colleague's writing book. Some copies were issued with 12 letterpress leaves and many copies are missing letterpress leaves or plates.Lacking five engraved leaves and browned along the edges.
