The Sceptical Chymist: or Chymico-Physical Doubts and Paradoxes, Touching the Experiments Whereby the Vulgar Spagirists are Wont to Endeavour to Evince Their Salt, Sulphur and Mercury to be the True Principles of Things. To which in this Edition are subjoyn’d divers Experiments and Notes about the Producibleness of Chymical Principles.

Oxford: Printed by Henry Hall for Richard Davis and B. Took 1680 - Second edition of the Sceptical Chemist, first edition of Experiments and Notes, without the advertisement (as usual), some browning, confined to three gatherings in the first part, more general in the second, a few ink or rust spots, pp. [xx], 440, [xxviii], 268, 8vo, contemporary English calf, double gilt fillets on sides, gilt fleurons in the corners, surface of covers crackled, rebacked and recornered, old staple holes to upper board from a chained library, old ink notes to front flyleaf and name of author at top of title page written in an old hand, Sion College library stamp and release stamp (dated 1938) to title verso, good ‘The importance of Boyle’s book must be sought in his combination of chemistry with physics. His corpuscular theory, and Newton’s modification of it, gradually led chemists towards an atomic view of matter . Boyle distinguished between mixtures and compounds and tried to understand the latter in terms of the simpler chemical entities from which they could be constructed. His argument was designed to lead chemists away from the pure empiricism of his predecessors and to stress the theoretical, experimental and mechanistic elements of chemical science. The Sceptical Chymist is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century’ (PMM).In Experiments and Notes about the Producibleness of Chymicall Principles ‘Boyle undertook to show that many of the substances best qualified for the title elements could, in fact, be produced by transmutation from a variety of other elementary starting materials. And he considered this an important demonstration because: "If the bodies they call principles be produced de novo how will it be demonstrable, that nature was obliged to take those principles made ready to her hand, when she was to compound a mix’t body?’" (Kuhn p. 28).The first edition (London, 1661) of the Sceptical Chymist can now command a six-figure sum.         Vera effigies vrbis et montis frisingensis, qua meridiem alpes, monachium, et ingentem planitiem aspicit, 1642. Die statt Freisingen, gegen Mitternacht (Freising, Germany)

Frankfurt 1680 - Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages.” Born and trained in Basel , Switzerland, in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Germaniae” was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. “Topographia Germaniae” was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing’s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries. This engraving, "Vera effigies vrbis et montis frisingensis, qua meridiem alpes, monachium, et ingentem planitiem aspicit, 1642. Die statt Freisingen, gegen Mitternacht " measures 12.75" x 15.75" and is in very good condition with light staining around the edges and pencil marking on the lower right corner. This engraving shows two views of the city Freising, located in Bavaria, Germany. Freising is one of the oldest settlements in Bavaria, and played an important role in the Middle Ages as a religious center. The engraving shows two dynamic views of the city and labels the numerous churches and building throughout the city. Two of the famous hills of Freising are illustrated: Cathedral Hill and Weihenstephan Hill.

The foundation work on animal motion. Published in the year of his death, Borelli's treatise presented the application of mechanics to the motion of the limbs of animals based largely on Galileo's mechanics. He began with the center of motion, the muscle, and then applied its forces to the linkage of bones with the same exactness as forces applied to levers. This analysis evolved into a system describing an animal's entire mobility covering the motions of walking, running, jumping, weight-lifting, bird flight, fish motion and insect creeping. He held that nerve stimulation was related to the contraction and swelling of a muscle and that some chemical process was associated with it. He also believed that heartbeat was a simple muscular contraction and that the circulatory system was hydraulic in principle (Dibner, Heralds of Science). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Printed for Robert Harford, 1680. - [48], 165, [3] pp. Recent full-leather. Very Good. First Edition. Wing C6510. Written while Robert Couch was "Sometimes Practitioner in Physick and Chyrurgery, at Boston in New-England," this is the first medical book composed in the British colonies. In 1663 Couch emigrated from England. Upon arrival in Boston he established himself as a physician and surgeon and spent most of his remaining life in Boston, with the exception of two years (1667-1669) in Portsmouth (New Hampshire), and a period in the late 1670s when he resided in Virginia and where he died prior to 1680. His manuscript was acquired by Francis Willis of Ware River, Virginia, who sent it to the London chemist Christopher Pack, who arranged for its publication with his own additions, and with a dedication of the work to Willis. There are very few 17th century American medical publications. Those published in the colonies include the following. Austin, Early American Medical Imprints, records three: (1) Thomas Vincent's 31-page pamphlet on the London fire and plague (Cambridge 1668; Austin 1977); (2) Thomas Thacher's broadside on small pox (Boston 1678; Austin 1881); and (3) John Oliver's 129-page book for pregnant women (Boston 1694; Austin 1433). Guerra, American Medical Bibliography [a-1 through a-12], records two printings of Vincent's pamphlet (1667, 1668); Thacher's broadside; two variant printings of a religious pamphlet by Allen James (1679); four works by Cotton Mather (1689, 1692, 1696, 1698); Oliver's book; and two printings of legislation in the Province of Massachusetts-Bay relating to health matters (1694, 1699). New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. I, p. 601. OCLC locates copies in these US libraries: American Antiquarian Society, Harvard, Huntington Library, NLM, NY Acad. Med., Virginia. In the UK, there are copies in Aberdeen, British Library, Sion College, Wellcome Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ambassades mémorables de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales des Provinces Unies vers les Empereurs du Japon

Jan Van Meurs, Amsterdam 1680 - Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked and cornered, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, dated at the foot of the spine First edition in French of this important work on Japan, a work whose illustrations "represent a high-water mark in book illustrations of the 17th century" (Lach). Designed to complement his similar work on China, this work was compiled by Montanus from records of Jesuit missions to Japan in 1649 and 1661, and published by Jan Van Meurs for the Dutch East India Company. Van Meurs had received the necessary permission to publish both a Dutch and a French edition in 1664, but it was not until 1669 that the Dutch edition appeared, to be followed shortly after by translations in German and in English using Van Meurs plates. In the present edition, the frontispiece and four of the original large plates were recut, and many of the text illustrations are reversed or mirrored. This edition is the first to include the plate of Fort Zeelandia in Taiwan. Montanus' work amounts to a massive history of all aspects of Japan as it was then understood by the West and contains "more firsthand information about Japan than any other post-1650 publication" (Lach). The work primarily concentrates on providing accounts of Japanese politics, culture, religion, and military affairs. In addition, Montanus gives descriptions of the various western attempts to make contact with Japan: these naturally concentrate on the VOC (or Dutch East-India Company) embassies. The account of the Dutch 'Blokovius-Frisium embassy' comes from previously unpublished material, and other VOC embassies described include those of Zacharias Wagenaer in 1657 and Henry Indyk in 1661. Topographical information is wide ranging (for the time) and includes Montanus' descriptions of the towns of Nagasaki, Hirado, Osaka, Sakai, Kyoto, Shizuoka, and Edo, as well as the mysterious 'boiling waters of Singok'. The sociology of Japan is also described in some detail, with accounts of Japanese customs (bath-houses, wrestling, gardens) endeavors (whaling, wine-making), and mores (including crime and punishment with accounts of murder, the burning of widows, blood-baths, and various tortures). The magnificent maps, plans, and illustrations cover Japanese costume, cities, flora and fauna, religious ceremonies, military techniques and include a plan of Nagasaki, large folding views of Miako and Edo, a scene of the destruction wrought by an earthquake at Edo, action portraits of samurai, an illustration of a religious ceremony at the temple at Beelden, formal meetings between western ambassadors and the Japanese Imperial Court, and a plate showing the Emperor's throne. Cordier Japonica 385;Cox I:325; Lach Asia in the Making of Europe III, pp.1873-79; Landwehr VOC 525. (13 7/8 x 9 inches). Title in red and black with integral engraved vignette. Engraved additional title, 26 engraved maps and plates (1 folding map, 4 folding plates, 21 double-page plates), 70 engraved illustrations, occasional engraved initials and head-pieces. 2 parts in one volume (as issued), folio [Attributes: First Edition]

1680 1st Complete KJV Octavo Bible Printed in Oxford

      - An uncommon type of book sophistication: Considerable trouble has been taken to make this 1680 Oxford octavo Bible (the first complete English octavo Bible printed in that city) look like an earlier 1637 London Bible. The title-leaf and subsequent leaf from that Bible have been bound in at the beginning (the latter replicating the content found on f. [1] of this Bible) and the date on the New Testament sectional title has been all but completely erased. The charming binding supports the hoax, bearing a gilt "1637" on its spine. This edition is printed in two unruled columns with shouldernotes, sidenotes (including dates), and italic headers. Acts 6:3 wrongly reads "ye may" for "we may." Tables of kindred and affinity, weights and measures, money, and time are found on the last two pages. The New Testament sectional title has a woodcut vignette showing the arms of the University.         Breve relacion de la peregrinacion que ha hecho de la mayor parte del mundo.

Madrid, Juan Garcia Infacon, 1680.. 4to. (20), 360 pp. With the title page within a border of cast fleurons, woodcut arms of the dedicatee Charles II of Spain, and several woodcut initials and tailpieces. Modern gilt blue morocco by the leading Barcelona binder Emilio Brugalla (1901-87), also active in Madrid, signed at the foot of the front turn-in: "Brugalla 1946", with the arms of the Spanish bibliophile Isidoro Fernandez (1878-1963) stamped in gold on front and back in a blind-stamped panel, double fillets on binding edges and richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges.. First edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as would later Careri, thus constantly being able to observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, back to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller's hats. Most obviously a missionary [...], he also became [...] a representative figure of the whole exploratory enterprise. By circumnavigating the globe in his travels, he was recognized in his own time to be another Magellan, Drake, or Cavendish" (Noonan). - With bookplates on pastedown; t. p. has contemporary ownership of Pere de Ribes-Vallgomera de Boixadors, Marques de Alferras, ennobled by Philip V in 1702. Some occasional foxing and a small restoration, replacing the outer lower corner of the t. p. in a subtle facsimile. Very narrow margins, occasionally just shaving the headlines and quire signatures, otherwise in very good condition. Rare in the market: two copies appeared at auction in the last 50 years. - Palau 65756. Sabin 17819. OCLC 14110894. Howgego C225. Lach & Van Kley III, 360. Maggs cat. 495, 303. This ed. not in Salva.
