A Relation of the Strange Apparition of the five Jesuits lately executed at Tyburn upon the account of treason. Being a wonderful token of their disquiet, and some things considerable referring to their guilt. Discovered to two gentlemen of eminent credit, upon the road between London and Acton, travelling for Chippenham in Wiltshire. Closed up with an ingenious and merry piece of history, concerning no Jesuits in hell.

np. [1680], [London] - Hardcover. Quarto. 4pp. Superb Elizabethan style craft binding by renowned London book-binder Bernard C. Middleton; full brown calf, with panels decorated and ruled in blind to the boards and raised bands & gilt title on spine. A tract that supposedly recounts an appearance before two travellers of the ghosts of the five English Jesuits who were falsely accused of conspiracy to murder King Charles II and were executed for treason in 1679. It appears that the story is meant to be taken literally - and that is not simply a vessel to rehash the details of the intrigue known as "the Popish plot" that brought about the men's demise - although a careful reading may reveal a more polemical bent. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Endpapers slightly discolored around edges, pages slightly wrinkled & creased, otherwise a VG + copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

L'art d'ecrire.Paris, chez l'auteur, 1680. Folio. With engraved calligraphic title-page and 18 (of 23) engraved leaves with calligraphic writing samples and illustrations, all engraved by Louis Senault. Disbound, sewn on top.

Becker, Practice of letters 91; Berlin Kat. 5117; Muller, Cat. Calligr., 1; Marzoli 56. First edition of a very elaborate basic writing course and copy book, minutely explaining the composition of the various calligraphic hands (fran?oises, b?tardes, financieres), as well as pen decorations and drawings. The engraved title-page reads, "L'art d'?crire ou Le moyen d'exceler en cet art sans maistre" (suggesting a break with the ancient tradition of learning by apprenticeship or under a school master) and spells the author's name "Allais", while the letterpress title-page spells it "Alais". The course was designed by Jean Baptiste Allais, dit le Beaulieu, and engraved by Louis Senault, who was a leading writing master in his own right and therefore ideally suited to engrave his colleague's writing book. Some copies were issued with 12 letterpress leaves and many copies are missing letterpress leaves or plates.Lacking five engraved leaves and browned along the edges.

1680 - ELIOT, John. THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE: A leaf from a copy of the Bible translated into the Indian language by John Eliot. Presented with explanatory text by Wilma Corcoran, Zion Research Library Boston University. Cambridge, MA: S.Green and M.Johnson, 1680. Second editon. (17 years after the first.) Single leaf. New Testament, Book of John, part of Chapters 19 and 20 dealing with the death and resurrection of Christ. This leaf is presented with an explanatory text in a white folder. Eliot (1631-1690) known as "Missionary to the Indians" learned the Algonquin language and translated the entire Bible into this unwritten and now extinct tongue. "The exigencies of metre and rhyme, combined with the extraordinary length of words in the agglutinative language, must have rendered his task one of supreme difficulty: the result must be considered a veritable tour de force." [Darlow & Moule 6737] The bible was printed by Samuel Green with the help of James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. A bit of browning and spotting with a few faint contemporary ink marks.
