The Grand Question, Concerning the Bishops Right To Vote in Parlament

1680. A Defense of the Lords Spiritual [Stillingfleet, Edward (1635-1699), Attributed]. The Grand Question, Concerning the Bishops Right To Vote in Parlament [sic] in Cases Capital, Stated and Argued, From The Parlament [sic] Rolls, and the History of Former Times. With An Enquiry into the Peerage, And the Three Estates in Parlament [sic]. London: Printed for M.P., 1680. [iv], 188 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary mottled calf, blind rules to boards, rebacked, raised bands, gilt ornaments and lettering piece to spine, hinges mended. Moderate rubbing to boards with wear to corners. Light toning to text. Later signatures and annotations to endleaves, interior otherwise clean. * First edition, one of two issues from 1680. On the face of it, this is a discussion of a right enjoyed by the Lords Spiritual, the bishops of the Church of England who sit in the house of Lords. More broadly, it is an argument defending their membership in Parliament that refuted contrary claims advanced in several recent pamphlets by Whig authors. At this time, the tense years leading to the Glorious Revolution, the Whigs feared the imminent ascendance of French-style royal absolutism and "popery," which would initiate a corresponding suppression of Protestantism and the rights of Englishmen. Stillingfleet, a prominent theologian and scholar, was an able and enthusiastic defender of Anglican orthodoxy. A second edition of The Grand Question was published in 1682. English Short-Title Catalogue R19869.

        Neumarckt (Newmarkt in der Oberpfalz)

Frankfurt 1680 - Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages”. Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Germaniae” was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. “Topographia Germaniae” was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing’s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries.         De stolatae virginitatis jure lucubratio academica.

Leiden, Joannes Lindanus, 1680. - 8vo. (12), 223, (5) pp. With woodcut printer's device to t. p. Contemp. calf with giltstamped label to prettily gilt spine (slightly rubbed). Leading edges gilt; marbled endpapers. First edition; rare. "One of his learned obsceneties" (cf. Bilder-Lexikon). Beverland (1650-1716), one of the most colourful figures of late 17th-century scholarship, had to leave Leiden University after creating a scandal hit with his treatise on original sin ("Peccatum originale", 1778). He proceeded to "live in England and write many pieces of filthy poetry" (cf. Rosenkranz, Hdb. einer allg. Geschichte der Poesie II, 30). An English translation was published in 1905 as "The Law Concerning Draped Virginity: An Academical Study". None of his works was banned by the Church, a fact which Reusch (II, 862) interprets as a sign of the increasingly desultory character of Roman censorship in the 18th century. - Front hinge beginning to split, otherwise a very appealing copy from the library of Armand Jules de Rohan (1695-1762), Duke and Archbishop of Reims (and uncle of Cardinal Rohan, notorious for the so-called Affair of the Diamond Necklace), with his engr. armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Brunet I, 837. Ebert 2076. Bilder-Lexikon II, 126. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 819. Clément, Biblioth. curieuse III, 270. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DOZE FRUTOS DE LA MUY ANTIGUA, Y ILUSTRE CASA DE BOURNONVILLE.

Imp. Rafael Figueró. Barcelona, 1680 - . 30,5 cm. The Information of Francisco de Faria, delivered at the Bar of the House of Commons, Munday, the First day of November, in the year of our Lord, 1680. Perused and Signed to be printed, according to the Order of the House of Commons, by me William Williams, Speaker. London, 1680

Printed by the assigns of John Bill, Thomas Newcomb, and Henry Hills, printers to the Kings most excellent Majesty, London, Great Britain 1680 - Francisco de Faria was born to Jewish parents in Pernambuco, Brazil in 1653. His father, John de Faria, was born in St. Giles, Belgium. The information de Faria provides lent credence to canard of the so called Popish Plot, a supposed criminal Catholic endeavor to overturn the Protestant government of England. We learn from his testimony that de Faria was recruited as an agent in Antwerp, where he made the acquaintance of several English Catholics, who convinced him to travel to London where he became personal assistant to the Portuguese ambassador. Along with his brother Abraham, Francisco de Faria was subsequently hired by the Portuguese as an assassin. A tale of considerable intrigue and suspense. See AJHSP, Volume XX, pages 115-132 Cf. Friedman, Early American Jews, page 184. Williams, William; b. 1613. References: Wing (CD-ROM, 1996); F425; ESTC (RLIN); R016386 On title, seal of Great Royal Crest, Honi soit qui mal y pense. pp. (4), 12. Unbound, housed within modern solander case. Small folio.
