        Naukeurige Beschryving van Asie:

Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs,, 1680. behelsende de Gewesten van Mesopotamie, Babylonie, Assyrie, Anatolie, of Klein Asie: beneffens eene volkome Beschrijving van gansch Gellukigh, Woest, en Petreesch of Steenigh Arabie. 2 parts bound in 1, folio (317 x 194 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, three-line blind tooled border on sides enclosing a large arabesque blind stamp, red speckled edges. Letterpress title printed in red and black; engraved pictorial title, 12 double-page engraved view (2 also folding), 3 double-page maps, 22 half-page plates. Bookplate of Heyse-Tak; front board has "sprung", 19th century repair to fore-edge of engraved title. First edition of Dapper's Asia Minor and Mesopotamia; a German edition followed in 1681. The Atabey Library copy has 16 plates but one of these is an additional botanical plate not called-for in the collation. In common with many of his contemporaries such as John Ogilby, the Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1639?-1689) never travelled to visit the lands he wrote about, instead compiling extant translations and others' eye-witness accounts to produce lavish and encyclopaedic books for the northern European readership. His and others' work thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples. Dapper was meticulous in using hundreds of published sources and several unpublished ones for each of his books; he did not lift whole passages from one book, but often based a single paragraph on two or three different sources. In this sense his work is indispensible to modern scholarship, as it reflects manuscript sources that have since been lost. Central to the contemporary appeal of Dapper's works were the engravings, which ranged beyond the geographical interest served by maps and views. Clothing, eating habits, religious beliefs, court ceremonies, and judicial practices were all subjects discussed by travellers and missionaries in letters and travel books and were reproduced by Dapper. The plates (which are excellent strong impressions) include superb views of Baghdad, Abydos, Ephesus, Smyrna, Magnesia, Muscat, and Mecca. Among the half-plates are attractive botanical subjects, including the coffee tree (p. 62 in the second part). An attractive copy in a contemporary binding.

The Aerial Noctiluca: or Some New Phoenomena, and a Process of a Factitious Self-shining Substance. Imparted in a Letter to a Friend, living in the Country. (+) New Experiments, and Observations, made upon Icy Noctiluca. Imparted in a Letter to a Friend living in the Country. To which is annexed A Chymical Paradox. (This with its own titlepage: A Cymical Paradox, Grounded upon new Experiments, making it probable, that Chymical Principles are Transmutable: So that, out of One of Them, others may be Produc'd).

London, Tho. Snowden, 1680. - London, Printed by R.E. for B. Tooke, 1681/2. Bound together in one contemp. full calf. Raised bands. Spine somewhat worn. Lacking some leather on backcover along hinge. Binding tight and not loose. (6),(1 leaf errata),109,2 lvs. blank,(14),104,(8),113-150,(1 leaf errata). Internally a fine clean and broadmargined copy, printed on good paper.. The very scarce first editions of both these milestone works in the history of chemistry. Boyle was one of the first to investigate the preparation of phosphorus ("the stuff that gives fireflies their glove"), and he gives a detailled description of its production. The phosphorus was collected underwater to prevent it from catching fire. He thus demostrated that something is present in air (i.e. oxygen) and he also described the Bolognian Stone. In the second work he describes further experiments with luminescent and chemical properties of phosphorus. The work "A Cynical Paradox" is importent as it confirms that Boyle believed that transmutation of one substance (not element) into another could occur."Boyle was unique in realizing the continual need for meticulous care in examining purity, testing composition, and searching for chemical differences and similarities. How methodical he could be is amply demonstrated in his two investigations into the nature of phosphorus, The Aerial Noctiluca (1680) and New Experiments and Observations Made Upon the Icy Noctiluca (1682), in the course of which he discovered the chief chemical and physical properties of phosphorus and phosphoric acid, and in Short Memoirs for the Natural Experimental History of Mineral Waters (1685), an admirable set of analytical directions. Few other chemists of his day seem to have been sufficiently patient to elaborate an analytical procedure, although it became commonplace in the next century."(DSB).Fulton Nos 138 a. 139 (having 'Finis' at end of p. 104). - Neville pp. 190-91. - Duveen p. 96 (only the first work). - Partington II: pp. 542 ff

Inscribed on the verso of the half-title: ?Samuel Johnson?s Gift of / the Revd. Author / 1724.?         Physiologia Kircheriana experimentalis, qua... naturalium rerum scientia per experimenta physica, mathematica, medica, chimica, musica, magnetica, mechanica comprobatur atque stabilitur.... -

Amsterdam, Jan Waesberg, 1680.In - folio picc. Legatura della metà dell'800 in mezza pelle con angoli, dorso con titolo e fregi impr. in oro; lievi abrasioni. Antiporta allegorica inc. in rame, 10 illustrazioni inc. in rame e numerose inc. in legno n.t. (8, incl. l'antiporta), 248, (8) pp.; lieve uniforme arrossatura della carta. Prima edizione di questa raccolta di studi, esperimenti ed osservazioni compiuti dal noto erudito in vari campi delle scienze naturali. "This work, edited by one of Kircher's pupils, Johann Stephan Kestler, is a codification of Kircher's observations and experiments across the entire spectrum of his researches in physics. Naturally there are large sections in light and shadow, magnetism, acoustics, and music; but there are also experiments and observations in hydrolics, alchemy, and a myriad of other topics. This compendium was perhaps a response to entreaties from Kircher's fellow scientists, who appreciated his keen observations and experiments but did not care to wade through some 40 volumes to glean them. The book is an example of what Kircher's writings could have been like at the hands of a good editor. Kircher died the year the book was published, and it is uncertain to what extent he was involved in its publication. The Physiologia is not only a measure of Kircher's scientific curiosity and the vast range of his scientific researches, but also a barometer of his age, a catalogue of scientific concern of his time" (Merrill, Kircher, 29). Caillet 5796. NLM (on line), 2371050R. Garrison - M. 580: "Includes the first recorded experiments on hypnotism in animals". First edition. With an extra engraved title, and many woodcut and engraved text illustrations. Owner's name in ink on title dated 1716; mild uniform toning of the paper; generally a good copy bound in early 19th century half calf gilt, slightly rubbed.

Oraisons Funebres Composées Par Monsieur Flechier, Abbe De Saint Severin De L Academie Francoise

Paris: , 1680. Seconde Edition. Good in a 17th century binding of full leather covered boards with five raised bands on the spine with only fragments of the backstrip remaining, but enough to show gilt tool work and gilt text in the compartments. In subsequent years to preserve the binding the spine area was heavily varnished. In the area where the backstrip has been lost the underlying sewing supports (cords) are visible. The front and rear joints seem to be cracked but the varnish continues to hold the book together with the aid of the still strong front and rear hinges. A 16mo measuring 6 1/4" by 3 1/2" with two recent prior owner's names on the first free end page. 326 pages of text.

Nicolaes Visscher, 1618-1679 Nicolaes Visscher took over the business of his late father Claes Janszoon Visscher in 1652, and went on to publish his "Atlas Contractus Orbis Terrarum " in 1657. He produced a number of world maps not just for the Atlas but also to be inserted in Bibles. The Visscher family were prominent Dutch map publishers for nearly a century. Claes Jansz Visscher ( 1587 - 1652 ) established the firm in Amsterdam near the offices of Pieter van den Keer and Jadocus Hondius. Many hypothesize that he may have been one of Hondius's pupils The first Visscher maps appear around 1620 and include numerous individual maps as well as an atlas compiled of maps by various cartographers including Visscher himself. Upon the death of Claes, the firmpassed to Nicholas Visscher I, and would, in turn, eventually be passed on to his son, Nicholas Visscher II. Most of the maps bearing the Visscher imprint were produced by these two men. Many Visscher maps also bear the imprint Piscator (a Latinized version of Visscher) and often feature the image of an elderly fisherman. Upon the death of Nicholas Visscher II, the business was carried on by the widowed Elizabeth Visscher until it was eventually sold to Peter Schenk. Zacharakis 3627/2350. Part of Kythera/ Cerigo and Anti-Kythera to upper left ;numerous ships in surrounding sea. Based on the cartography of Sebastien de Pontault de Beaulieu, who mapped a lot of Mediterranean fortifications approx. anno 1674. Dark Impression; triimmed to plate mark at sometime and laid down on contemporary paper for binding; overall light toning; some scattered spotting, most noticable on blank margins [due to quality of paper]; dampstain and wrinkling to blank margins. Frederick de Wit [1630-1706] De Wit was one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam in the period following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments, from which he acquired many copper plates when they were dispersed at auction. His output covered most aspects of map making: sea charts, world atlases, an atlas of the Netherlands, 'town books' covering plans of towns and cities in the Netherlands and Europe, and wall maps. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death by Pieter Mortier and Covens and Mortier. Frederick de Wit was born Frederick Hendricksz or Frederick son of Hendrick.he moved from his home town of Gouda to Amsterdam in 1648 and by 1654 he had opened a printing office and shop under the name "De Drie Crabben" (the Three Crabs) which was also the name of his house on the Kalverstraat. In 1655, De Wit changed the name of his shop to the "Witte Pascaert" (the White Chart). Under this name De Wit and his firm became internationally known. Dating De Wit's atlases and maps is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years Koeman III: Wit 3 /23 Greece.
