Nanbenya Jûzô: Komon cho [Collection of fine patterns].

Japan, Edo period (first half of 18th century). - Large 4to (193 × 287 mm). "Komon" patterns for cloth or paper designs. 13 ff. with 159 (but: 156) katazome-dyed paper pattern sheets numbered and captioned by hand. Japanese block stitching in indigo wrappers and ms. cover label. The inside front cover has a ms. note providing the name and address of the seller or manufacturer: "Minato Onochô itchôme - Nanbenya Jûzô". The borders of the specimen sheets are fashioned by re-using an older manuscript. - "Komon" is a Japanese pattern dye style based on especially minutely patterned all-over designs. The intricacy of this style originated in 16th century Japan, when it served to decorate the "kami-shimo", or official Samurai garments, and the clothes of the Shogun's family and of some Daimyos. Occasionally, these would even have privileged ("forbidden") designs (so-called "tomegara") which nobody else could wear. Until well into the 19th century, the production of and trade in such "komon" patterns was subject to a special monitoring system. Since the end of the 18th century the patterns were increasingly used by the urban population. Due to the extreme costliness of their manufacture, such garments were worn mainly on semi-official occasions, especially for private ceremonies and celebrations. The patterns, distinguished by their superior delicacy and minute detail, are produced with the help of wax paste and paper stencils ("kata-gami-zome" or "katazome"; cf. Klein-Bednay, Japanische Musterbücher des 18. und 19. Jhs., in: Von Morris bis Memphis, p. 359). - Compared with five similar pattern books in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dated "ca. 1680" and "ca. 1700", the present specimen shows a wider range of basic colours, while some designs are slightly less intricate. In all other respects, however - such as the arrangement of the pages, the materials use, the size and the scope - show evident parallels, while the 19th century katazome pattern books or other 19th century textile design collections differ markedly. - Binding rubbed; lower wrapper and 3 leaves show slight worming near the gutter. Cf. Metropolitan Museum of Art - Digital Collections, Identifier nos. 23.88.5 through 23.88.8 and 23.88.10. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Map of Crete - Frederick de Wit, c. 1680.

MAP OF CRETE"Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. 'Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm.One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by Sébastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish?Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea.On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda.Price: € 1.450,-  .

Centonicum virgilianum monimentum mirabilis apparitionis purissimae virginis Mariae de Guadalupe extramuros civitatis mexicanae.

Mexici: apud Viduam Bernardi Calderon Folio (28.5 cm; 11.25"). [11] ff., without the engraved plate.. 1680 Following a serious illness, Riofrio (also rendered Rio Frio), a canon of the cathedral in Michoacan, composed this "Virgilian Centonic Monument" as a thank you to the Virgin of Guadalupe for healing him; "cento" is Latin for "patchwork cloth" or a "cloak," and, of course, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is on a cloak. This epic poem of Her apparition is composed of 365 hexameters that are both copied from Virgil and original to Riofrio (yes, a patchwork), making for a rather odd mix of => Trojans, Tyrians, Olympic gods, Mexican Indians, Spanish bishops, and the Blessed Virgin Mary! Still, the result is regarded as an important example of Novohispanic baroque NeoLatin poetry. Heralding the Centonicum in the prefatory matter is Bartolome Rosales' "Aulica musarum synodus crisis apollinea in laudem authoris" ("The Courtly Synod of Muses, an Apolline Judgment of the author"), giving the reader another example of Novohispanic NeoLatin poetry. The work is from the press of one of Mexico's famous "women printers," Paula Benavides, the widow of Bernardo Calderon. It begins with a handsome title-page using roman and italic type in several point sizes, the largest being reserved for the first word of the title and the words "Mariae," "Guadalupe," and the last name of the work's dedicatee, "Payum," the archbishop of Mexico. The archbishop's coat of arms in a large woodcut rendition appears above the text of Riofrio's dedicatory introduction. The texts of the prefatory matter and of the epic poem are printed within ruled borders, with notes along the inner and fore-margins. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, CCPB, and the OPAC of the Spanish national library locate one copy in the U.S, one in Mexico, none in Britain, and none in Spain. The copy in Mexico lacks the plate. The copy reported to be at the British Library is a ghost, as the copy "was destroyed by enemy action during the second world war " (email from the BL). Palau notes the plate is often missing. Provenance: On front free endpaper, in an 18th-century hand, "Del uso del P[adr]e Fr[ancisco] Jose Rubio. Sewn in nonoriginal, ad hoc vellum covers, no spine; without the engraving. Expert recent treatment of text block to remove soluble acids, paper resized; one tear in text repaired; tattered edges and missing blank areas of margins restored via leafcasting; guards mended. Now an excellent copy.

Amsterdam: No publisher/printer 12mo (16.5 cm, 6.5"). 2 vols. I: [18] ff., 660 pp. (i.e., 662). II: 658; 34 pp.. 1680 Giambattista Marino (Giovan Battista Marino, 1569–1625) was => Italy's greatest Baroque poet. His extravagant style became known as Marinism, or Seicentismo, inspiring a century of lyricists known as Marinisti. However the poet's reputation suffered in the 18th and 19th centuries when critics dismissed many fruits of the Baroque period as "all form no substance" (Guardiani, 74). It was not until the mid–20th century that Baroque literature was reevaluated and Marino's work was newly admired by scholars. First published at Paris in 1623 and => placed on the Index in 1627, L'Adone is a complicated narrative based on the myth of Venus and Adonis from Ovid's Metamorphoses, combined with other myths and passages imitating Dante, Ariosto, Tasso, and French writers. These elements are intertwined with novelties, including a lyrical autobiography modeled on Ovid's (canto IX, 59–91), and a eulogy for Marino's contemporary => Galileo and his telescope (canto X, 42–47). Composed of over 5,000 octaves in 20 canti — almost 41,000 verses, Marino's complicated, ornate poem is => one of the longest epics ever written in Italian. The edition in hand is printed in roman and italic, with factotum initials and a handful of woodcut tailpieces. The title-page in the first volume is printed in red and black, and black only in the second, with both volumes featuring the printer's device of an armillary sphere: mark of the Elzevirs, who printed the 1678 edition in Amsterdam? Quarter calf over paper-covered boards, recently rebacked with original spine leather laid down; spine tooled creating compartments accented with gilt center ornaments, author and title gilt on black morocco spine in second one. Scuffed, chipped, and soiled but sturdy; foxed throughout though never more than moderately; edges uncut.

The first part here contains a section for each of these Roman poets, each with copious notes by Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540–1609); the second part is divided into => 14 chapters of commentary by Muretus, Statius, and others as per the title-page. The volume's text is in Latin with some Greek, printed in roman, italic, and capital letters, with the main text single-column above Scaliger's notes, printed smaller and in double columns; the separate commentaries, paginated continuously but quite erratically, are also in double-column. Dotted throughout are attractive woodcut initials of floral, historiated, and factotum designs; ornaments and head- and tailpieces; a small woodcut diagram; and a few inscriptions printed in capitals, including one set lengthwise on a full page. The title-page features the printer's large device and is preceded by an => added engraved title-page. Binding: Contemporary vellum => prize binding paneled in gilt on each cover with fleurons at corners, this surrounding the => coat of arms of Rotterdam, i.e., two gilt lions supporting a shield of four lions passant above a pale charge, crowned by a ducal coronet with a fleur-de-lis at the helm. Spine blind-ruled with a single floral ornament blind-stamped in each compartment, title written in early ink (now faded). Provenance: Two different bookplates of Lebanese lawyer, writer, and translator Camille Aboussouan (b. 1919), former UNESCO ambassador to Lebanon who founded the cultural review Les Cahiers de l'Est. Pressure-stamp of Jean-François Jolibois (1794–1879), a priest at Trévoux, France, who was a member of the légion d'honneur and various literary societies. Ink inscription in French dated 25 February 1863 at Lyon, shelf number in same hand on front pastedown, and price in ink on front free endpaper. Binding as above, with four green ribbon ties; prize assignment lacking and engraved title-page reattached; lightly soiled, gilt rubbed in places, some staining to edges of text block. Mild to moderate foxing, occasionally; a few inkstains or smudges and small dampstains; two small holes from natural paper flaws not affecting text and one sectional title-page with same taking "A" from CATULLUS; two short marginal tears. Overall, indeed, clean and crisp and pleasing.

        Experienze . . . intorno a diverse viscere taglite a diversi animali viventi . . . dedicate all'illustrissimo Signore Francesco Redi

Florence: F. Onofri, 1680. Zambeccari, Giuseppe (1655-1728). Esperienze . . . intorno a diverse viscere tagliate a diversi animali viventi . . . dedicate all’illustrissimo Signore Francesco Redi. 4to. 30, [2]pp. Florence: Francesco Onofri, 1680. 250 x 182 mm. 19th-century marbled boards, paper spine with printed label, spine a bit soiled, light wear. Minimal spotting, staining on last few leaves but very good. Bookplate. First Edition. One of the earliest works on experimental surgery, containing proof that the spleen is not essential to life. The Esperienze was the only book published by Zambeccari during his lifetime, and it has always been a rarity in commerce. Zambeccari, the son of a government official, studied medicine at Pisa, where one of his professors was the anatomist Lorenzo Bellini. After graduating in 1679, Zambeccari moved to Florence where he continued his medical studies under Francesco Redi. In 1680, with Redi’s encouragement, Zambeccari performed the series of physiological experiments for which he is now known; these consisted of removing various organs from live dogs and other animals in order to gain a better understanding of the organs’ functions. "One of the first series of experiments dealt with the removal of the spleen; several of the animals operated upon survived, and a few months later they were killed and carefully examined in order to discover what anatomical, pathological, and physiological changes had been caused by the removal of the organ. . . . Turning to the study of other organs, Zambeccari performed unilateral nephrectomies and discovered that the animal apparently was not incommoded by the operation. In other experiments he tied the common bile duct and thus demonstrated that bile is not formed in the gall bladder, as was often the common belief. Encouraged by the results of his experiments, he not only removed the bile duct but also fragments of hepatic tissue, and even entire lobes of the liver, always finding that a good percentage of the animals survived the operation. Zambeccari performed a resection of the cecum and finally went so far as to remove the pancreas and to ligate the mesenteric veins. He also studied the eyes and noted that pricking the cornea of various animals rapidly leads to the reconstitution of the aqueous humor" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). 3761. “Zambeccari, Giuseppe,” The Galileo Project (internet resource).

1680 1st Complete KJV Octavo Bible Printed in Oxford

Hardcover. Good. An uncommon type of book sophistication: Considerable trouble has been taken to make this 1680 Oxford octavo Bible (the first complete English octavo Bible printed in that city) look like an earlier 1637 London Bible. The title-leaf and subsequent leaf from that Bible have been bound in at the beginning (the latter replicating the content found on f. [1] of this Bible) and the date on the New Testament sectional title has been all but completely erased. The charming binding supports the hoax, bearing a gilt "1637" on its spine. This edition is printed in two unruled columns with shouldernotes, sidenotes (including dates), and italic headers. Acts 6:3 wrongly reads "ye may" for "we may." Tables of kindred and affinity, weights and measures, money, and time are found on the last two pages. The New Testament sectional title has a woodcut vignette showing the arms of the University.

Name a.d. Titeln, Exlibris HERMANN TÜRCK a.d. Innendeckeln. Denn „. the kabbalistic philosophy of VAN HELMONT, KNORR, and their colleagues contributed to the emergence of modern science by promoting the idea that man was essentially good, human ingenuity a noble tool in the inevitable march of progress, and experiment a legitimate way to comprehend the book of nature and glorify God. . VAN HELMONT’s and KNORR’s kabbalistic philosophy offered a viable vitalistic alternative to atomism, Cartesianism, and the mechanical philosophy. Furthermore, it was perfectly possible to adhere to the Kabbalah while employing a genuine scientific methodology involving a skeptical, empirical, and mathematical approach to scientific knowledge. And finally, as we shall see, VAN HELMONT and KNORR were deeply interested in the practical and technological aspects of their scientific endeavors, another characteristic of the scientific revolution.“ (The Kabbalah, Science, and the Enlightenment, S.2). Erben. Titel, 417, (1) S., (8) Bll. Marmorierter Pergamentband d.Zt. mit handschriftl. Rückenschild und Schutzkanten. Wappensupralibros a.d. Deckeln. Rückenbezug rissig und mit kleiner Fehlstelle. (Graff, Bibliotheca Widmanstadiana 702). – Teils etwas fleckig, etwas gelockert. Äußerst selten; in keiner deutschen Bibliothek nachweisbar, in Österreich nur zwei Exemplare (ÖNB Wien [unvollst.]; Stiftsbibl. St.Peter, Salzburg).

Amsterdam, 1680. Copper-engraved map. The first state of Danckert's first map of North and South America. Danckerts here issues a version of De Witt's circa 1675 map of the same title (i.e., Burden 465, between state 3 and state 4 of that issue). Cartographically, the two are very similiar, and thus Burden's notes on the earlier apply. Of that map, Burden writes: "The map is cartographically drawn directly from De Wit's own wall map version published in 1672. The most notable improvement is the depiction of the five Great Lakes, this for the first time on a Dutch map. There is also an altered west coast depiction of the Hudson Bay region. Both features appear to have been taken from Guillaume Sanson's Amerique Septentrionale, published in 1669" (Burden 465). As in the De Wit map, the decorative cartouche on the present map by Danckerts draws from an earlier Visscher map of the western hemisphere. The present map is Burden's first state, with the additional cartouche at the top left, without the mapping of New Guinea and neighboring islands in the South Pacific, and without Terra Esonis in the north. In circa 1696, Danckerts would re-issue this map from a new plate, the present plate apparently having worn out or been damaged (see Burden 725). This earlier version, however, is considerably more scarce, particularly in its first state, with Burden noting that only "a handful of examples" of Danckert's atlas from this early period are extant. Burden, The Mapping of North America 527 (state 1); McLaughlin, Mapping of California as an Island 75.

A Mapp of All the World in two Hemispheres in which are exactly Described all the Parts of the Earth and Seas. Described by Sanson, corrected and amended by William Berry

London: "Sold by William Berry at ye Sign of the Globe between Charing Cross and Whitehall", 1680. Engraved double-hemispheric world map, period hand-colouring in outline. (Expertly repaired tears at sheet edges). Scarce separately issued seventeenth century English world map. "William Berry, a minor map-seller who sometimes worked in conjunction with Robert Morden, has here adapted the Sanson world map as published by Hubert Jaillot in 1674. Berry has patriotically marked the islands discovered by Drake just off Tierra del Fuego and has added New Albion in the northern part of California, shown as an island. Decoration is minimal except for a cartouche carrying a dedication to Charles II and his coat-of-arms" (Shirley). Other differences from the Sanson map include additional toponyms in North America, reflecting English settlements, including Carolina. The map was offered for sale as a separate sheet and within a composite world atlas offered for sale by Berry. Of the latter, Phillips writes: "This collection of English maps by William Berry is sometimes known as the English Sanson atlas. The maps were published separately at various dates and the atlas was issued without a title page. There are only two other copies of this atlas known, one in the King's collection in the British Museum, where it is regarded as one of the rarest of English atlases." For nearly a century the Visscher family dominated Amsterdam's map trade. Claez Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) founded the business at the beginning of the seventeenth century, establishing the firm near the workshop of the great Dutch publisher Pieter van der Keere. At this time he produced a few separately published maps but his first major atlas was completely comprised of maps printed from van der Keere's old plates. The business was continued by Visscher's son and grandson who went by the names Nicholaes Visscher I (1618-1679) and Nicholaes Visscher II (1649-1702). During their lifetimes they issued many fine atlases, which they consistently updated and revised with the latest cartographic discoveries. Elizabeth Visscher, the widow of Nicholaes II, continued the business after her husband's death and published both an Atlas Minor and an Atlas Major . The business eventually was acquired by Peter Schenk (1660-1718), who continued to republish the Visscher plates until his death in 1718.
