Map of Crete - Frederick de Wit, c. 1680.

MAP OF CRETE?Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. ?Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm.One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by S?bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish?Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea.On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda.Price: ?1.450,-.

Novissima Russiae Tabula. Authore Isaaco Massa.

1680 - Oxford: Jan Jansson van Waesbergen, Moses Pitt & Stephan Swert, c.1680. Coloured. 470 x 550mm. A map of Russia after Isaac Massa (1586-1643), a Dutch grain trader who became an envoy to the Kremlin and collected maps of Russian territory at great persoanl risk. It was originally published by Jan Jansson in 1636 and reengraved the following year with a title and dedication to Benart. After his death the plates passed to his son-in-law, Jan Jansson van Waesbergen. He went into partnership with two English publishers, Pitt and Swart, to produce a twelve-volume 'English Atlas' to compete with Blaeu's. Between 1680 and 1683 four volumes of the atlas and the text for the fifth were printed in Oxford, but the mounting costs were too much. Production ceased and for a time Pitt was locked up in the Fleet Prison for debt, making this state of the map quite uncommon. The differences are van Waesbergen & Pitt's names as publishers and a grid engraved over the map.

        Città di Vercelli

Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338, Cremonini pp. 83-90. The Hague The Hague 590 510

Totius Iutiæ Generalis Accurata delincatio. Apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, et Mosem Pitt.

*** Partielt Danmarkskort : Dækker Jylland, Als, Fyn med omliggende øer samt Sjælland. Kobberstik i sort/hvid. 44 x 56 cm. Udgivet af Moses Pitt i Oxford ca. 1680. Med vertikal midterfold som ved udgivelsen. Papirmål : 59 x 69 cm. Fint eksemplar. Gerard Mercators (1512-1594) skelsættende Atlas udkom i tre dele i Duisburg i årene 1585-1595.

Auctore Isaaco Massa.

1680 - Oxford: Jan Jansson van Waesbergen, Moses Pitt & Stephan Swert, c.1680. Coloured. 385 x 500mm. A map of Northern Russia, Lapland and the partial outline of Novaya Zemlya after Isaac Massa. It was originally published by Jan Jansson in 1641, but after his death the plates passed to his son-in-law, Jan Jansson van Waesbergen. The differences are van Waesbergen name as publisher and a grid engraved over the map.

        De motu animalium.

First edition Rome: Angeli Bernabo, 1680-81. A fine copy of the foundation work of biomechanics. "Pupil of Galileo and teacher of Malpighi, Borelli's lasting fame is his dominating influence in the establishment of the Iatrophysical School of thought, which sought to interpret all physiological phenomena by the laws of mathematics and physics." (Heirs of Hippocrates). ?Dibner 190; Horblit 13; Norman 270; Garrison-Morton 762; Heirs of Hippocrates 496; Lilly Notable Medical Books 91. "Inspired by Harvey's mathematical demonstration of the circulation of the blood, Borelli, a trained mathematician and physicist, conceived of the body as a machine whose phenomena could be explained entirely by the laws of physics. Borelli was the first to recognise that bones were levers powered by the action of muscle, and devoted the first volume of his work to the external motions produced by this interaction, with extensive calculations on the motor forces of muscles. The second volume treats of internal motions, such as the movements of muscles themselves, circulation, respiration, secretion, and nervous activity" (Norman). "Borelli originated the neurogenic theory of the heart's action and first suggested that the circulation resembled a simple hydraulic system. He was the first to insist that the heart beat was a simple muscular contraction" (Garrison-Morton). "It is highly creditable to his insight and candour that, although he set out with the idea of explaining the movements of living organisms mechanically, he yet realised that the contraction and swelling of the muscles, on which all such movements depend, cannot be purely mechanical, but involves also complex chemical processes. He held, namely, that neural stimulation had something to do with the contraction and swelling of muscles" (Wolf, History of science, technology and philosophy). Born in Naples, Giovanni Borelli (1608-79) studied mathematics at Rome under Benedetto Castelli. Sometime before 1640 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Messina. In the early 1640s, he met Galileo in Florence. In 1656 Borelli was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa, a post previously held by Galileo. It was in Pisa that Borelli met the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi; the two men became founder members of the short-lived Accademia del Cimento. Motivated by Malpighi's own studies, Borelli began his first investigations into the science of animal movement. This began an interest that would continue for the rest of his life, eventually earning him the title of the Father of Biomechanics. After returning to Messina in 1668, Borelli was forced into exile in Rome for suspected involvement in political conspiracies. Here he first became acquainted with ex-Queen Christina of Sweden, who had also been exiled to Rome for converting to Catholicism. Borelli lived the rest of his years in poverty, teaching basic mathematics at the school of the convent where he had been allowed to live. His masterwork, De motu animalium, on which he had worked for many years, might never have been published but in late 1679 Queen Christina agreed to bear the printing costs and Borelli dedicated the De motu animalium to her. He died in December, however, and his benefactor at the convent, P. Giovanni di Gesù, accepted the responsibility of seeing this last and most important work through the press. Volume I, treating of external motions, or the motions produced by the muscles, appeared in 1680. Volume II, dealing with internal motions, such as the movements of the muscles themselves, circulation, respiration, the secretion of fluids, and nervous activity, appeared in late 1681. Two vols, 4to (216 x 160 mm), pp. [xii] 376 [11]; [iv] 520, with 18 folding engraved plates. Contemporary limp vellum, titled in ink in manuscript on spines. Some modreate wear but an unrestored and genuine set.

Giambattista Marino (Giovan Battista Marino, 1569-1625) was => Italy's greatest Baroque poet. His extravagant style became known as Marinism, or Seicentismo, inspiring a century of lyricists known as Marinisti. However the poet's reputation suffered in the 18th and 19th centuries when critics dismissed many fruits of the Baroque period as "all form no substance" (Guardiani, 74). It was not until the mid-20th century that Baroque literature was reevaluated and Marino's work was newly admired by scholars. First published at Paris in 1623 and => placed on the Index in 1627, L'Adone is a complicated narrative based on the myth of Venus and Adonis from Ovid's Metamorphoses, combined with other myths and passages imitating Dante, Ariosto, Tasso, and French writers. These elements are intertwined with novelties, including a lyrical autobiography modeled on Ovid's (canto IX, 59-91), and a eulogy for Marino's contemporary => Galileo and his telescope (canto X, 42-47). Composed of over 5,000 octaves in 20 canti -- almost 41,000 verses, Marino's complicated, ornate poem is => one of the longest epics ever written in Italian. The edition in hand is printed in roman and italic, with factotum initials and a handful of woodcut tailpieces. The title-page in the first volume is printed in red and black, and black only in the second, with both volumes featuring the printer's device of an armillary sphere: mark of the Elzevirs, who printed the 1678 edition in Amsterdam?

[Memorable Embassies of East India Company of the United Provinces to the Emperor of Japan].

Amsterdam: Jacob de Meurs, 1680. Folio; title in black and red with engraved vignette, additional engraved title, 26 engraved maps and plates (one of the maps folding, 4 plates folding and 21 double-page), and about 70 engraved illustrations in the text, along with occasional engraved initials and head-pieces; contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt. First French Edition. A beautifully illustrated work, prepared by Montanus to mirror and complement his great work on China, this is one of the most significant of early publications on Japan. Its remarkable series of engraved illustrations 'represent a high-water mark in book illustrations of the 17th century' (Lach). The monumental work was compiled by the Dutch minister Arnold Montanus, based chiefly on reports from emissaries of the Dutch East India Company; it describes their meetings with the Japanese and with traders of other nations, especially Portugal, and gives a remarkably detailed picture of Japan and its people. The illustrations include superb town views including those of Edo (Tokyo), Osaka and the Dutch trading settlement at Deshima.Montanus' chief source was the journals from the Dutch East India Company Embassy of 1649 which had pretended to be 'an official embassy from the Dutch government rather than from the VOC', and 'the description of Henry Indyk's Embassy to Edo in March 1661, [which] is unusually rich in details' ((Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe).'During this period of isolation (Sakoku) that began in 1635... the shogunate placed foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. It monopolized foreign policy and expelled traders, missionaries, and foreigners with the exception of the Dutch and Chinese merchants who were restricted to the man-made island of Dejima in Nagasaki Bay and several small trading outposts outside the country... ' (Wikipedia). A few plates with repairs; skilfully rebacked to style. A very good copy.

Tabula Indiæ Orientalis Emendata a F. de Wit.

Amsterdam: c. 1680. Engraved map, 460 x 560 mm., superb handcolouring; mounted. Fine early map of the East Indies showing the discoveries of Tasman by Frederick de Wit, at a time when he was one of the foremost map-makers in Holland. His firm's 'maps were distinguished by their excellent craftsmanship, exactness and beauty... ' (Schilder). This map stretches from Persia in the west to China and Taiwan in the east, and shows northern "Hollandia Nova", bearing three significant place names: "Van Diemens Landt"; "Baya van Diemen" and "Vuyle hoeck" (the last a disparaging term meaning something like "rotten corner" and evidently relating to the inhospitable coastline). All of these relate to Abel Tasman's second voyage of 1644.'Frederick de Wit, an apprentice of William Blaeu... became one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death... ' (Parry, The Cartography of the East Indian Oceans, p. 118).The map is handcoloured in outline and decorated by a beautiful cartouche showing four dramatically-posed costumed figures of the East. Fine condition.

        Acta Medica & Philosophica Hafniensia.

First edition Copenhagen: Peter Haubold, 1673-1680. Rare complete run of one of the first medical journals. While Garrison lists 3 previous journals, 2 of these were published for 1 issue only ('Medical and scientific periodicals of the 17th and 18th centuries,' in Bull. Inst. Hist. Med., Johns Hopkins II, 285-243). Only the Giornale dei letterati (Parma, 1668-88) predates this. Among the many significant contributions, including more than 100 by Bartholin himself, are the last published scientific works of Niels Stensen. Stensen returned from Italy to Denmark in 1672 to accept an appointment at the University of Copenhagen under Bartholin. During his stay he carried out a number of experiments, two of which are published in vol. I: Embryo monstro as finis Parisiis dissectus (pp.200-3) and Uterus Leporis Proprius, foetum resolventis (pp.203-7). During his stay in Italy, however, Stensen converted to Catholicism and found himself the target of attack from orthodox Protestants. He beame more interested in theological debates that scientific research and in 1674 he returned to Florence and in 1685 took Holy Orders. "The Copenhagen biologists, under the quickening influence of Thomas Bartholin, produced five volumes of transactions known as the Acta Medica et Philosophica Hafniensia, which is now very rare and almost entirely forgotten." (Cole). The leading authors besides Thomas Bartholin and Niels Steensen (Steno) were Holger Jacobsen (Jacabaeus), Caspar Bartholin, Ole Borch (Borrichius), Ole Worm, Simon Paulli, JohanRodhe, Caspar Kolichen and several others.--"In the case of many of their observations the interest is rather in the odd and curious, the astounding and marvelous, the unnatural and the abnormal Monsters and freaks of nature receive perhaps the most attention." (Thorndike). "Steno stimulated by his important researches on the female genital ducts and ova of the terrestrial vivipera turned his attention to fishes. He gives an account in shark Mustelus of a functional placenta. He gives also, in Mustelus and Acanthias, one of the earliest descriptions and figures of the elasmobranch spiral intestine, which he names 'intestinum cochleatum'. In Torpedo he describes the electric organ, its characteristic vertical prismatic columns, and the nerve supply. Steno's dissections of the muscles of the eagle, Aquila (1673)is one of the most remarkable essays in zootomy published up to his time, and it is perhaps more detailed and reliable than almost any other. Steno also published a series of nine drawings of the thoracic duct and associated lymphatics of the dog"(Cole). Thomas Bartholin describes the male mandrill illustrated by three anatomical plates(Male genitalia) and a figure of the entire animal, which had died of disease in the Royal Menagerie. Holger Jacobsen describes the scorpion, the salamander, snakes, several birds, the heron and the parrot (based on dissections and figures by Steno). He also investigated the fascinating and unique anatomical puzzle of the tongue of the black woodpecker (with plate). He gives an exceptionally ionteresting account of the mole cricket, Gryllotalpa, which is important as being one of the first in which the elongated segmental heart of insects is described and figured. This memoir is a commendable piece of zootomical research, and it all the more outstanding because the subject of it was an invertebrate. (Cole) Fully complete: vol. I: pp (16), 1-23, 34-148, 159-316, with 16 plates(numerous mispaginations); vol. IIpp (20), 376, with 24 plates; vol. III/IV: pp (16), 1-99, 98-174(vol.IV): pp 1-216 with 15 plates [no title page for vol IV was issued]; vol. V with 8 plates. These five volumes contain together 63 engraved plates (two folding) and numerous woodcuts in the text. Bound in four contemporary and uniform half calf, hinges and boards with some wear, some superficial leather restoration to surface, not re-backed or with other major repairs. Some gathering with moderate browning.

The foundation work on animal motion. Published in the year of his death, Borelli's treatise presented the application of mechanics to the motion of the limbs of animals based largely on Galileo's mechanics. He began with the center of motion, the muscle, and then applied its forces to the linkage of bones with the same exactness as forces applied to levers. This analysis evolved into a system describing an animal's entire mobility covering the motions of walking, running, jumping, weight-lifting, bird flight, fish motion and insect creeping. He held that nerve stimulation was related to the contraction and swelling of a muscle and that some chemical process was associated with it. He also believed that heartbeat was a simple muscular contraction and that the circulatory system was hydraulic in principle (Dibner, Heralds of Science). Near Fine.

        Petrus II Imperator totius Russiae

Artist: Wortmann/Tannauer C A/Johann Gottfried ( - 1760 ) ; issued in : St Petersburg; date: 1729 1680 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Stains outer margins; size (in cm): 50,5 x 36 - description: Peter II Alexeyevich, Pyotr II Alekseyevic (23 October 1715 ? 30 January 1730) was the Emperor of Russia from 1727 until his death. He was the only son of Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich, son of Peter I of Russia by his first consort Eudoxia Lopukhina, and Princess Charlotte of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.An important event in the life of Peter II was his coronation. The event took place in Moscow on January 9, 1728, with the Emperor and a huge entourage. Still, he was disengaged from the affairs of state. Foreign witnesses proclaimed that ?All of Russia is in terrible disorder . money is not paid to anyone. God knows what will happen with finances. Everyone steals, as much as he can.? Moving the court and several other institutions from St. Petersburg back to Moscow was painful for the new capital, as well as the nobility forced to move with it, as Peter the Great had put much effort into developing St. Petersburg into a large and lively city at the time.Peter II returned to St. Petersburg from time to time, but continued an aimless life full of entertainment and distraction. He gradually fell under the ultimate influence of the Dolgorukovs ? Peter II became smitten with the 18-year-old beauty Ekaterina Alekseyevna Dolgorukova. The family schemed to tie themselves to the imperial bloodline, and persuaded Peter to marry their relative, Ekaterina Dolgorukova. However, it soon became clear that the young monarch had no interest in his bride, perhaps influenced by his aunt Elizabeth Petrovna, who did not like Ekaterina. The wedding went forward regardless, set to take place on January 19, 1730.In late December of 1729, Peter II had fallen dangerously ill. His condition deteriorated sharply after the frosty Epiphany Day in January 1730, when he participated in a feast. He was then rushed into the palace, standing at the back of his sleigh. The next day, doctors diagnosed him with smallpox. The Dolgorukovs attempted to get the emperor to sign testament naming Ekaterina as his heir, but they were not allowed into the dying emperor?s quarters: Peter II was already unconscious. In his delirium, he ordered horses so that he could go see his recently deceased sister Natalie. A few minutes later, he died.Emperor Peter II died as dawn broke on January 30, 1730 ? the day he planned to marry Ekaterina Dolgorukova. He is buried in the Kremlin and was the only post-Petrine Russian monarch given that honor. In fact, with Ivan VI (who was murdered and buried in the fortress of Shlisselburg), he is the only post-Petrine monarch not buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. With Peter's death, the direct male line of the Romanov Dynasty ended. He was succeeded by Anna Ivanovna, daughter of Peter the Great's half-brother and co-ruler, Ivan V.

Legatura coeva in tutta pergamena. (Bailly): Berlin Katalog 4434. Nissen 67 (per errore indica 13 tavv.). Dunthorne 21 (edizione francese). An Oak Spring Flora 46, n. VI (edizione francese). (Cerini): Berlin Katalog 879. (CERINI PIETRO?). Sig. Mons. Camillo Piazza"). - Roma, Matteo Gregorio Rossi in Piazza Navona, 1682. (Unito:) CERINI PIETRO. (Sei incisioni montate su tre carte in - folio con decorazioni floreali "dedicate all'Ill. Sig. Samuelle Jacomini"). - Roma, Matteo Gregorio De Rossi in Piazza Navona, 1696.
