[c.1680], Amsterdam, - Cuba and Jamaica Double-page engraved chart with fine hand-colour in part and in outline. First large-scale Dutch chart of Cuba and Jamaica - published in Roggeveen's exceedingly rare sea pilot 'Het Brandende Veen'. Roggeveen, born in Delshaven, came to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies, in 1658. He worked for both companies teaching the art of navigation and helped to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, including Spanish portolans of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, Roggeveen embarked upon compiling a series of large-scale charts of the North American coastline, West Indies, and, later, West Africa. Many of his charts are based upon the earlier large-scale work of Hessel Gerritsz and Joan Vingboons, both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies, but Roggeveen's work was the first to show the whole coastline of North America and the Caribbean. He called this pilot 'Het Brandende Veen' or 'The Burning Fen'; a pun on his name, as 'veen' means 'fen', and a heap of burning fen represents a fire on the coast to guide or warn ships. The first edition of the atlas was published in 1675 by Pieter Goos, however, due to the death of Goos in the same year, and that of Roggeveen four years later, a second edition would not be published until 1680, by which time the plates had been acquired by the chart dealer Jacobus Robijn. Robijn went on to republish the second edition in 1689, with a third edition appearing in 1698. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338, Cremonini pp. 83-90. Dimensioni 590 510mm

Magnae Tartariae, Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponia et Chinae Nova Descriptio

A beautiful example of Frederick de Wit's c. 1680 map of Tartary. The map covers from just north of the Arctic Circle to Formosa south to the the Bay of Bengal and Formosa, and from the Caspian Sea to Hokkaido or Yedso. Although parts of China, Japan, and northern India were somewhat mapped, most of northeastern Asia was fully unknown to western cartographers. The continent has here been given a curious rounded form that may be suggestive of a northeasterly route to Asia. Both the Great Wall of China and the Gobi Desert are clearly delineated. At the western edge of the map the overlarge Caspain Sea is erroneously mapped on an east-west rather than north-south axis. This map was published both independently and as part of various complied and composite atlases. Copperplate, very good condition. Amsterdam Amsterdam Dimensioni in mm. 555 X 440

1680 - A small frieze copper engraving of this Greek mythological tale. Dates to c1680. Titles beneath the image "Pelei Et Tethydis Nuptiae". Artist and engravers name to lower left outside image but within plate mark. All very clean and good impression or strike. On wove paper with on the reverse a light vertical line down the centre indication it was once folded. The nice thing is this cannot be see from the front and surface clear. Measures; 17.5 x 30 cm. * No engraver, print maker or artist found with this name having searched online just before listing and it the past when I acquired this. Possibly Italian and the work was made in Italy c1650-1700. There was a French Astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini and his father was named "Jacopo". The astronomer was born in 1648, so a date mid-to-late 17th century would fit? This is a long shot but worth mentioning if doing further research.

A Mapp of the Isles of Iapon

      A. Goodbid and J. Playford, 1680. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand-coloring. Expertly restored and lined, margins missing. Image measures 14.25 x 20.75" This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf on Tonkin. The Sea of Korea and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. Moses Pitt, a British bookseller and publisher, released this English edition of Tavernier's original French map in 1680. The map has been intensively repaired and has some stains, but it remains a good copy of this hard-to-find map. Jean Baptiste Tavernier (1605-1689) was a famous French traveler who voyaged most extensively in India and Persia. His two volumes of "Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier" document his travels and commercial contacts. While he never made it to Japan, this scarce map evidences the wide range of contacts he made during his voyages.

India & The East Indies "Tabula Indiæ Orientalis "

Asia: Amsterdam. Fredericum de Wit 1680?. Copper engraved map of India and South east Asia by Frederick de Wit from his " Atlas Maior". Original outline colour; verso blank. The map shows the area from Persia with the subcontinent of India extending to the East Indies with the islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, part of the coast of China, the interior obscured by the title cartouche: the Northern coast of Australia to lower right corner Good impression; light toning to extreme edges; centrefold splits top [40 mm] and bottom [130 mm] with old repair to verso; paperfault? repaired near lower centrefold; 3 short tears to lower edge, repaired with archival tape to verso; old ink numbers to verso. Frederick de Wit [1630-1706] De Wit was one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam in the period following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson establishments, from which he acquired many copper plates when they were dispersed at auction. His output covered most aspects of map making: sea charts, world atlases, an atlas of the Netherlands, 'town books' covering plans of towns and cities in the Netherlands and Europe, and wall maps. His work, notable for the beauty of the engraving and colouring, was very popular and editions were issued many years after his death by Pieter Mortier and Covens and Mortier. Frederick de Wit was born Frederick Hendricksz or Frederick son of Hendrick.he moved from his home town of Gouda to Amsterdam in 1648 and by 1654 he had opened a printing office and shop under the name "De Drie Crabben" (the Three Crabs) which was also the name of his house on the Kalverstraat. In 1655, De Wit changed the name of his shop to the "Witte Pascaert" (the White Chart). Under this name De Wit and his firm became internationally known. Dating De Wit's atlases and maps is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years Koeman III: Wit 8 /73.       1680 - Acquaforte, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Opera molto rara. Etching, signed in plate at lower left. Magnificent proof, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, applied on antique mounting of collection, in perfect condition. Marco Sammartino Sammartino or was a Neapolitan painter lived in the second half of the seventeenth century , according to Bartsch active around 1680 . Malvasia mentions it under the name of Sanmarchi Venetian, almost certainly the artist's stay in Venice. Sammartino painter known and appreciated especially landscapes with small figures, praised for their respect to the veracity of the sites, forethought and attention to detail. These qualities become, in the graphic, balanced use of luminance contrast between foreground figures and backdrops with rocks, tree houses and scenes, according to a figurative tradition that was handed down by Antonio Tempesta until Filippo Liagno. The engraving activity Sammartino is placed in a precise historical relationship, formal and stylistic with that of Filippo Napoletano. Very rare.         De' capricci medicinali dell'eccell. medico, e cirugico M. Leonardo Fioravanti bolognese. Libri quattro. Di nuovo di secreti importantissimi ampliati, quali cosi a professori di fisica, come di cirugia erano grandemente necessarij . Al Clariss. & Eccellentiss. Sign. Tomaso Cinelli, Medico Fisico..

In Venetia, appresso Giacomo Zattoni, 1680.

Map published for the first time in the Atlas Major, 1680 circa. It is decorated with cartouches depicting views and plans of Messina, Palermo, Catania and Trapani, and a plan of Messina erroneously called Milazzo. Due to the great outcome, the map was reissued in the first years of 1700 by Covens and Mortier and by the Ottens. The quality of the colour and the paper make us presume it was published by Ottens, around 1730. Copper engraving, in excellent codnition.

Bibliografia: Norwich, The Map of Africa, 256. Dimensioni 555x450. A highly decorative, large sea chart of the East Coast of Africa with Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Malabar Coast of India. This was an important region as it depicts an area heavily contested among the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and other European powers, and with its Arab settlements that were in this area from earliest times. This sea chart was first published in De Wit's Orbis Maritmus ofte Zee Atlas of 1675 and appeared in later editions as well. De Wit's sea charts from his Zee Atlas are sought after for their geographical content as well as their attractive cartouches and vignettes. A large, elaborate title cartouche dominates the bottom of the chart. This cartouche shows animals: lions, water Buffalo, snakes, and other animals. Across the top of the cartouche are numerous Arabs, one on horseback. Several sea battles are also depicted in the Indian Ocean. Copper engraving, magnificent contemporary colour, signs of centre fold, otherwise in good condition. Reference: Norwich Map, 256. Norwich, The Map of Africa, 256. Dimensioni 555x450 Dimensioni

Claude Barbin, Paris 1680 - Volume I: [22] + 364 pp./ Volume II: [11] + 344 pp. title gilt on raised decorated spine, edges and corners slightly bumped, water stain marks on fly leaves, otherwise set in good condition. The first edition was published in Granada in 1600. The text of this fictitious account of the Arab conquest of Spain, described by its ingenious Moor author, Miguel de Luna, as a Spanish version of a text by one of the invading force, " Abulcacim Tariff Abentariq" of Medina. The book is in two parts, part 2 beginning with a life of king " Jacob Almancor" by a certain Ali Abencufian. The most celebrated Moorish convert to Christianity of his time, Miguel de Luna became an interpreter to the crown. In this capacity, and as a native of Granada, he had access to Arabic manuscripts still existent there, as well as the wealth of legendary material found in Spanish balladry and half-remembered morisco traditions. His work quickly became popular and excited a renewal of interest in the historical period throughout Europe. Nevertheless, his so-called History is fiction. Though a product of Luna’s imagination, modern scholars like Monroe, unlike a host of 19th century investigators, do not relegate his work to the realms of a mere novel: ‘.Luna’s book is something more than just a blatant attempt to foist a falsified Arab history on the public; it is a defence of tolerance, and as such it belongs in the class of novels of the sort of the Abencerraje, which also attempts to show how on the level of virtue and tolerance, both Muslims and Christians could coexist in perfect harmony. It is thus tempting to speculate on the extent to which polemical Morisco literature may have helped shape the image of the ‘Noble Moor’ which became so fashionable in Golden Age Spanish literature and lasted till much later as a literary theme in the rest of Europe.’ Only in recent times has it been appreciated that Luna’s primary objective was to offer a disguise criticism of the treatment of the moriscos. That his intentional fabrication escaped detection for two centuries is an indictment of earlier Spanish scholarship.         Naukeurige Beschryving van Asie: behelsende de Gewesten van Mesopotamie, Babylonie, Assyrie, Anatolie, of Klein Asie: beneffens eene volkome Beschrijving van gansch Gellukigh, Woest, en Petreesch of Steenigh Arabie.

Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs, 1680 - 2 parts bound in 1, folio (317 × 194 mm). Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, three-line blind tooled border on sides enclosing a large arabesque blind stamp, red speckled edges. Bookplate of Heyse-Tak; front board has "sprung", 19th-century repair to fore edge of engraved title. An attractive copy in a contemporary binding. Letterpress title printed in red and black; engraved pictorial title, 12 double-page engraved view (2 also folding), 3 double-page maps, 22 half-page plates. First edition of Dapper's Asia Minor and Mesopotamia; a German edition followed in 1681. In common with many of his contemporaries such as John Ogilby, the Dutch physician Olfert Dapper (1639–1689) never travelled to visit the lands he wrote about, instead compiling extant translations and other eye-witness accounts to produce lavish and encyclopaedic books for the northern European readership. His and others work thus both reflected and directed growing public interest in distant places and foreign peoples. Dapper was meticulous in using hundreds of published sources and several unpublished ones for each of his books; he did not lift whole passages from one book, but often based a single paragraph on two or three different sources. In this sense his work is indispensible to modern scholarship, as it reflects manuscript sources that have since been lost. Central to the contemporary appeal of Dapper's works were the engravings, which ranged beyond the geographical interest served by maps and views. Clothing, eating habits, religious beliefs, court ceremonies, and judicial practices were all subjects discussed by travellers and missionaries in letters and travel books and were reproduced by Dapper. The plates (which are excellent strong impressions) include superb views of Baghdad, Abydos, Ephesus, Smyrna, Magnesia, Muscat, and Mecca. Among the half-plates are attractive botanical subjects, including the coffee tree (p. 62 in the second part). The Atabey Library copy counts 16 plates but one of these is an additional botanical plate not called-for in the collation. Aracadian Library 8342; Atabey 322; this edition not in Blackmer; Macro 805. [Attributes: First Edition]
