Silvestre, Israel (1621-1691)
c. 1680, Paris. [Click Below for Full Description]

MARTENS, FREDRICH
Venise, Iseppo Prodocimo, 1680, 12mo, Original Carta Rustica Binding, manuscript title, text uncut. Scarce First edition of the Italian translation. An important journey in the history of the exploration of Spitsbergen. In 1671, the naturalist Friedrich Martens (1635-1699) embarked as a surgeon aboard a whaling ship from Hamburg (the Jonas im Walfisch or Jonah in the whale) who was leaving for a fishing season in the Arctic regions. The account of his trip appeared for the first time in German in 1675 Martens, a Hamburg doctor, completed his first botanical studies on the island of Spitzberg. The story of the journey is in any case very rich in information on that chilled climate, and of the birds, quadrupeds, fish, and rare plants that are born there, with the description of the whales, and other natural phenomena. Conway, No man's land, a history of Spitsbergen ., 1906, pp. 213-214. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ALLARD (Hugo ou Huych).
[Amsterdam, circa 1680]. 425 x 503 mm.

No copy! - No reprint! // The Visschers were a famous and important Dutch family of engravers, cartographers, mapmakers and publishers. Claes Janszoon Visscher (1587-1652) was born in Amsterdam. He learned the art of etching and printing from his father, and helped grow the family printing and mapmaking business to one of the largest in his time. It was a family business; Nicolaes Visscher I (1618–1679), and Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) were also mapmakers in Amsterdam. The trademark of the Visschers was a fisherman, after their name. A small fisherman would be strategically placed somewhere near water. Their map plates were reused for a century by other printers who unknowingly copied the entire plates, including the tell-tale fishermen. Observant scholars are thus able to trace the provenance of Bibles, maps, and landscapes from these signs.
London: 1679-1680. The Popish plot was as fabricated conspiracy theory that there was a plot to murder Charles II so that his Catholic brother James could inherit the throne. The issue was the focus of a frenzy of pamphleteering and popular anxiety, as the above shows, and multiple attempts to enact laws to prevent a Catholic from becoming monarch, which failed. Major players included Thomas Dangerfield, a career criminal who claimed he had been asked to assassinate the King by Lady Powess; Elizabeth Cellier, a prominent Catholic midwife who advocated for imprisoned Catholics and was accused of conspiracy by Dangerfield after she withheld charity from him; Roger Earl of Castlemaine, a Catholic who was accused of high treason but won acquittal after serving as his own advocate in court; a number of other accusers who jumped the bandwagon for fame and fortune, and so on. A collection of folio pamphlets concerning the Popish plot and exclusion crisis, as follows: Popish Damnable Plot against our religion and liberties fairly laid open and discovered in the Breviats of threescore and four letters and papers of intelligence past. Map of Crete - Frederick de Wit, c. 1680
1680. MAP OF CRETE "Insula Candia Ejusque Fortificatio. "Copper engraving by Frederick de Wit, published in Amsterdam c. 1680, with original hand colouring. Size: 46 x 54,5 cm. One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by SÃ bastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Ottomans after a 21-year siege (the longest siege in history). The Siege of Candia [modern Heraklion], the capital of Crete, was the central event of the sixth Turkish-Venetian War, better known as Cretan War, or War of Candia. It was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, French volunteers, and pirates from Mani) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States, fought over the Venetian possession of Crete. The war lasted from 1645 to 1669, and was fought in Dalmatia, Crete, and in numerous naval engagements in the Aegean Sea. On the map the seas around the island are filled with galleons and galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the towns and fortifications of Chania and Heraklion. Under the map are plans of the fortifications of Spinalonga, Rethymno, Tylissos [Thine] and Suda.

[Click Below for Full Description]

BOYLE, Robert
Oxford: Henry Hall for R. Davis and B. Took, 1680. Second edition of the 'Sceptical Chemist,' first edition of 'Experiments and Notes.' This is "the most famous book in the history of chemistry" (Neville) and Boyle's "most important work [in which he] set down his corpuscular theory of the constitution of matter, which finally freed chemistry from the restrictions of the Greek concept of the four elements, and was the forerunner of Dalton's atomic theory" (Sparrow). "Boyle's most celebrated book is his 'Sceptical Chymist' . . . It contains the germs of many ideas elaborated by Boyle in his later publications" (Partington II, p. 496). "The importance of Boyle's book must be sought in his combination of chemistry with physics. His corpuscular theory, and Newton's modification of it, gradually led chemists towards an atomic view of matter. Boyle distinguished between mixtures and compounds and tried to understand the latter in terms of the simpler chemical entities from which they could be constructed. His argument was designed to lead chemists away from the pure empiricism of his predecessors and to stress the theoretical, experimental and mechanistic elements of chemical science. The 'Sceptical Chymist' is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century" (PMM). 'Experiments and Notes about the Producibleness of Chymical Pri … [Click Below for Full Description]
