Rare.

London: Magna Charta, Made in the Ninth Year Of King Henry the Third, 1680. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. An early translation of Magna Carta. Magna Charta translated by Edward Cooke, Esq. London: Printed by the Assigness of Richard and Edward Atkins , Esquires, for Thomas Simmons, at the Princes and Capital Arms, in Lungate-Street 1680. 16cm. Bound in full sheep. Provides an English translation of Magna Carta, accompanied by interpretations of the document from Lord Chief Justice Edward Coke (1552-1634), from his Institutes of the Laws of England (1644). Barrister Sir Edward Cooke (c. 1650-c. 1705) sought to provide access to this foundational document to the many practitioners and common people who did not read Latin. The combination of a concise translation and a digest of Edward Coke made the work very popular especially among law students. The work remained a fundamental law book until it was superseded by William Blackstone's introduction to his addition of the charters in 1759. From a North American perspective, the work was even more important. Although Edward Coke's 4 volume Institutes was known and read, this slim volume was far more popular. As the colonies drafted their own charters, many included the liberties enumerated in Magna Carta. The work is quite rare because not many copies are in existence because it was heavily used. The University of Texas law school also has a copy of this work. This magnificent piece which is 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 is housed in a 8 3/4 x 10 1/2 shadow box frame. [Attributes: First Edition]

In his note "To the Candid Reader", the former Member of Parliament Edward Leigh refers to earlier travellers who had written accounts, with mention of several Arabist scholars including Golius, Erpenius, and Pocock. His survey of coinage includes the observation that gold and silver are not necessarily of interest to all: "Mony, commonly, is the mean for all commodities, and answereth to all... Yet the Spaniards coming into the West-Indies, had many commodities of the country which they needed, brought unto them by the inhabitants; to whom, when they offered them money, goodly pieces of gold coyn, the Indians taking the mony, would put it into their mouths, and spit it out to the Spaniards again, signifying, that they could not eat it, or make use of it; and therefore would not part … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Beautiful map of the continent filled with details typical of the late 17th Century. The Nile appears according to the ancient pattern, arising from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan. Joseph de (del) Olmo
Roque Rico de Miranda and Francisco Sanchez, Madrid and Granada, 1680. 2 works bound together. Relacion Historica del Auto General de Fe Que se Celebro en Madrid Este Ano de 1680. 308 pages with armorial motifs of the Church and the kingdoms of castille and Aragon frontispiece and engraved title. Lacks the folding plate. 58 pages (1672). Small octavo (7 3/4" x 6") bound in period vellum with handwritten title to spine. (Palau 201026; no record of second work) First editions. The prime purpose of a trial and death sentence was not to save a heretic's soul, but to ensure the public good and to strike terror into the people. Sentences and abjurations must be read out publicly. For the inquisitors, t was not enough to get the heretic to admit that he had sinned and declare that he had repented. He must be made to do so in public, so that is served as a lesson to all the faithful. This was the object of the ceremony known as the auto de fe. In the course of an auto de fe nobody was executed; only after the ceremony were those sentenced to death handed over to royal justice and taken to the place of execution. Joseph del Olmo's account of what happened in Madrid was horrifying. The condemned were taken to a place of execution and attached to rings between posts, garroted and then set on fire. The texts contains descriptions of the defendants in these ecclesiastical suits and gives vivid and highly suggestive psychological portrait of historical efforts in repression. The second work bound … [Click Below for Full Description]

Opera molto rara. Ex collezione F.H. (Lugt 3373) Etching, without date and signature. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with wide margins, in good condition. Marco Sanmartino or Sammartino was a Neapolitan painter lived in the second half of the seventeenth century, according to Bartsch active around 1680. Malvasia mentions it under the name of Sanmarchi Venetian, almost certainly the artist's stay in Venice. Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
A highly decorative, large sea chart of the East Coast of Africa with Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Malabar Coast of India. This was an important region as it depicts an area heavily contested among the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and other European powers, and with its Arab settlements that were in this area from earliest times. This sea chart was first published in De Wit's Orbis Maritmus ofte Zee Atlas of 1675 and appeared in later editions as well. De Wit's sea charts from his Zee Atlas are sought after for their geographical content as well as their attractive cartouches and vignettes.
A beautiful example of Frederick de Wit's c. 1680 map of Tartary. The map covers from just north of the Arctic Circle to Formosa south to the the Bay of Bengal and Formosa, and from the Caspian Sea to Hokkaido or Yedso. Although parts of China, Japan, and northern India were somewhat mapped, most of northeastern Asia was fully unknown to western cartographers. The continent has here been given a curious rounded form that may be suggestive of a northeasterly route to Asia. Both the Great Wall of China and the Gobi Desert are clearly delineated. At the western edge of the map the overlarge Caspain Sea is erroneously mapped on an east-west rather than north-south axis. This map was published both independently and as part of various complied and composite atlases. Copperplate, very good condition.

Molto decorativa. Decorative map of Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, published by Frederick De Wit in Amsteradam, the first time in 1680, and reprinted several times The present example - with the notice of De Wit's privilege, which was granted on October 27, 1689 - is a final state of the map, dating about 1720. The map includes a detailed cartouche, numerous sailing ships and a naval battle of the Gulf of Naples. R. Borri "L'Italia nelle antiche carte..." (2011), scheda 149

Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Bellissimo esemplare in coloritura coeva. A nice map of the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. The coastal information is fairly accurate but much of the interior topography is less precise. The title cartouche features the arms of the Kingdoms of Sardinia and Corsica with their characteristic symbols for the defeated Moors who had once ruled the islands. Original color, good conditions.
Map published for the first time in the Atlas Major, 1680 circa. It is decorated with cartouches depicting views and plans of Messina, Palermo, Catania and Trapani, and a plan of Messina erroneously called Milazzo. Due to the great outcome, the map was reissued in the first years of 1700 by Covens and Mortier and by the Ottens. The quality of the colour and the paper make us presume it was published by Ottens, around 1730. Copper engraving, in excellent codnition. L. Dufour - A. Alchemy.) EBAUCHE DE L'ART SECRET DES PHILOSOPHES
1680. manuscript in ink on paper, text within ruled borders, in Latin and French, in a single neat and entirely legible hand, with a few contemporary side notes apparently not in the scribe's hand (i.e. a reader's), first title-page dust-soiled and with vestiges of wax in a spot at the foot, a modicum of dust-soiling elsewhere, ff. [iv], 122 (in ink up to 89, thereafter supplied later in pencil; including some blanks), 12 (last blank), 20 (last blank), 8 (last blank, 1 leaf folded in at fore-margin to accomodate side-notes), 14, 42 (last blank), 18 (last 3 blank), small 4to, green straightgrained green morocco (c. 1900) by Charles De Samblanx, double gilt fillets on sides enclosing a narrow vine leaf roll tool, spine with gilt rules on either side of raised bands, lettered in gilt direct, gilt inner dentelles, pink silk doublures and fly-leaves, the fly-leaves followed by an opening of marbled paper, gilt edges, slip-in case, hint of fading to spine, loosely inserted engraved armorial bookplate of the Dukes of Arenberg. A fine collection of alchemical texts, far neater than 'ebauche' might suggest, and made into a luxury object by bibliopegic finesse (the edges are gilt 'cigar box' style). The half-title of the long first part (largely in French) is numbered 1, fol. 91 is No. 2, the shorter pieces have their cahier numbers running from 7 to 12. ALLARD (Hugo ou Huych) -- ALGERIE.
Amsterdam, vers 1680. 425 x 503 mm.

BIBLE IN ENGLISH (THE VISSCHER BIBLE)
Oxford. The Theatre. 1680. 2 volumes folio 18x12 inches, handsomely bound in full period red morocco, some wear and minor restoration. Two engraved titles- one a general title and one to the New Testament. Text illustrated as follows - 124 double page plates mostly by Visscher, 5 double page maps including a WORLD MAP plus a plan of Jerusalem, plus an additional title by Piscatore Theatrum Passionis. The maps are by Jacob Savry and the world map appears to be a second issue by Savry of the Visscher world map. Condition- mostly good but some plates split in the fold without loss and an occasional crease. Two plates with additional period printed margins. Occasional marginal spotting- mostly to the endpapers. These plates are usually found in Ogilby's illustrated issue of J. Field folio Bible of 1660 published in Cambridge. In 1659 John Field, the printer to the University of Cambridge, published a handsome large folio edition of the King James version of the Bible. Seeing an opportunity for improvement, much of the edition was purchased by the bookseller and publisher John Ogilby. Ogilby added to the Bible numerous engravings and in select copies further augmented the edition with sets of engravings purchased from the Amsterdam publisher Nicholas Visscher. The plates are mostly by Cornelis Visscher, after Rubens, de Vos, de Bruyn, Pieter Potter and others. This is a version of the Bible published in Oxford with these plates. The collation and number of plates vary greatly from copy to copy - thus sold as described. The bookplate of Samuel Gurney a famous Norfolk banking fami … [Click Below for Full Description]
