Iutiae Tabula in qua sunt Dioeces Alburgensis, Wiburgensis, Ripensis et Arhusiensis.

Artist: Wit de Frederick ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1680 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 57,5 x 47,5; - description: Map shows Jütland in Denmark.Today, the Danish parts of Jutland belong to either of the three administrative regions North Jutland, Central Jutland or Region of Southern Denmark. The German parts of Jutland peninsula today form the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the city of Hamburg.; - vita of the artist: Frederik de Wit (1610 ? 1698) His Atlas began to appear around 1662 and by 1671 included anywhere from 17 to 151 maps each. In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. Frederik de Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired, to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid-1670s an atlas of as many as 151 maps and charts could be purchased from his shop. In ca.1675 Frederik de Wit released a new nautical atlas. The charts in this atlas replaced the earlier charts from 1664 that are known today in only four bound examples and a few loose copies. Frederik de Wit new charts were sold in a chart book and as part of his atlases. Frederik de Wit published no fewer than 158 land maps and 43 charts on separate folio sheets. In 1695 Frederik de Wit began to publish a town atlas of the Netherlands after he acquired a large number of city plans at the auction of the famous Blaeu publishing firm?s printing plates.Dating Frederik de Wit atlases is considered difficult because usually no dates were recorded on the maps and their dates of publication extended over many years.

The Works of the Famous Nicholas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly and faithfully translated into English.

London: Printed for John Starkey, Charles Harper, and John Amery, 1680. Second edition in English of the works of Machiavelli, an important work of political science which includes The Prince. Folio, bound in full calf, elaborate gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, marbled endpapers. Includes: The History of Florence; The Prince; The Discourses of Nicholas Machiavel, Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius; and The Art of War (this last work is incomplete in this copy). Each with a separate dated title page but pagination and register are continuous. Also includes "Nicholas Machiavel's letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius", which is not in fact by Machiavelli but by Henry Neville. Translation attributed to Henry Neville. Wing M128. In very good condition. Although it is relatively short, Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative and is often considered to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal.

He also discovered how vipers reproduced and how to extract their venom to study its effect on the body. The illustrations to No.1 include armadillo, mermaid, iguana, plants, exotic fruit and nuts of various kinds. No.4. is on the albatross, one of the earliest monographs on a single bird.       1680 - Amsterdam: Van Keulen, c.1680. Old colour. 520 x 590mm. Narrow top margin due to the height of the plate. One of the first sea charts of north-east Asia, illustrating how little was known of the region. It shows from Novaya Zemlya in northern Russia, along the coast of Siberia (with few promontories and one one large island) past the mythical 'Land of Ezo' and 'Companies Land' to Japan, Korea and Zhoushan in China. There are no signs of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Kamchatka or the Bering Strait, as the chart predates the explorations of Vitus Bering by nearly fifty years and James Cook by nearly a century.

A Map of the North-Pole and the Parts Adjoining.

1680 - Oxford: Moses Pitt, 1680. Coloured. 460 x 590mm. A few small repairs, pinholes in crest. A scarce map of the Arctic Circle, with the title on a curtain, with portraits of Lapplanders and a whaling scene. On the map the mythical island of Frisland is marked, as is a strait through Greenland, placed there instead of Canada by Martin Frobisher, who had been confused by the non-existence of Frisland. Further west the discoveries of the English explorers looking for the North West Passage are shown. Bottom left are the arms of Charles FitzCharles (1657-80), the son of Charles II, which consists of his father's arms with a baton sinister vair overall, signifying illegitimacy. He died of dysentery defending Tangier, which had been part of his father's dowry when marrying the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza in 1662.
