La Mer de Nort ou sont la N.le France, La Floride, La N.le Espagne, Les Isles et la Terre-ferme d'Amerique

Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1679. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. Scarce 17th century mapping of America. This superb map of the New World evinces mid-seventeenth century French geographical knowledge, based largely upon the work of the great French cartographer, Nicolas Sanson, Duval's father-in-law. It is also an excellent example of the French cartographic aesthetic, exalting clarity and classical elegance. Duval, with some geographical modernizations, based this map on his smaller 1655 rendering of the same subject. The depiction of the American Northeast is somewhat more progressive than that shown by Sanson. New York, Boston, Cape Cod, Virginia and Maryland are each specifically named. Up into the interior, Duval shows all five Great Lakes, however the boundaries of Lakes Superior and Michigan ("Lac des Puans") are left undetermined. Most of the American Southeast is shown as a part of the great Spanish territory of "Floride," which extends north into the Carolinas. South Carolina is labeled "Floride Françoise," and "Charles-Fort," the abortive French settlement on Port Royal Sound from the 1560s, is labeled here. This map appeared as the top right sheet of Duval's four sheet wall map, titled Carte de Geographie: "All [i.e. each sheet] were designed with individual titles so that they could be viewed independently or when these were removed they could be pasted together to form a large wall map" (Burden). The present example is from the first state of the map. Burden, The Mapping of North America II:508.

He is, perhaps, best remembered for his monumental work \"A Display of Heraldry\" which was first published in London in 1610. Born in 1565 (some date 1550) in the county of Herefordshire. This part of England is very close to the border with Wales and Guillim\'s ancestors were probably of Welsh extraction. He was educated at Brasenose College in Oxford University. In 1575 a John Guillim of Minsterworth married Frances Dennis, and raised a family of one boy, John, and three girls, Margaret, Frances, and Priscilla - unreliable source? The first record of his involvement with heraldry is the Earl Marshal\'s warrant, dated 23 February 1604, permitting him to bear the tabard of the Portsmouth Pursuivant Extraordinary. From Michaelmas 1613, he was receiving a salary from the College of Arms, though his official appointment as Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary was not made until 1618. The Display of Heraldry was written around 1610 and reprinted as early as 1611. There were seven further editions of the book following Guillim\'s death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Some historians have suggested that the original author of the Display of Heraldry was a clergyman named John Barkham who was unwilling to have the work published in his own name. Guillim\'s death is recorded as having occurred on 7 May 1621, probably at Minsterworth, although there is no record of his place of burial.Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth (1734 - 1823) was a Scottish judge, was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1783 and Lord Advocate in 1784. He became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Burghs in the same year. He was Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General from 1789 to 1808. In 1808, he was created a baronet. He also was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1799, and died in 1823 aged eighty-nine years.Source: Wikipedia Versand D: 9,90 EUR

CONDITION: The Vellum Covering is split at the front spine fold, but the front board itself is holding well; the rear spine fold is splitting for 2" at the top and 1" at the bottom; the vellum is rubbed, soiled and scratched, mainly from age and handling; overall the vellum covers remain firmly bound and their gilt designs fairly bright; lovely covers in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library sort of way; internally, the vellum is pulling away from the area where it folds over the inside of the boards, but it still remains well attached; there is a lovely bookplate of "Henry Harcourt Horn" with a unicorn design on the front pastedown; the rear pastedown has tears; there is shorelining to the upper area of the title page and the subsequent 20 or so pages, dark on a few of them, but the text is always clear beneath, otherwise the inner pages are in remarkably good condition, just a spot, bit of foxing, crease, rub, or small shoreline, here and there, overall the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The double page fold-open map of the Middle East remains very nice. A Quite Lovely Copy of this Rare Book. This 336 year-old 1679 Vellum Bound edition is SCARCE. Fair

With title-pages printed in red and black, 5 folding engraved plates, 1 folding engraved map of Japan (28×42 cm) and 1 engraved illustration in the text.       Alt Japan Katalog 381; Cordier, Japonica, col. 401; for the map: Hubbard, Japoniae insulae 96. First and only Portuguese edition of Jean Crasset's Histoire de l'eglise du Japon (1679), the only edition in any language to include a map of Japan. Jean Crasset, a French Jesuit, based his work on François Solier's Histoire ecclesiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon (1627) and continued the account from 1624 to 1658. It gives an elaborate history of the Jesuit mission in Japan, beginning with Francis Xaver. The plates, by Miguel (Michel) le Bouteux, show Japanese costumes, the emperor's palace and an execution of Jesuit missionaries. Bouteux copied the map from a 1646 map of Japan titled "Japponiae nova" in Antonio Francisco Cardim's Fasciculus e Japponicis floribus, an illustrated history of Jesuit martyrdom in Japan. Manoel da Sylva published a Portuguese translation of Cardim's history in 1650, which most likely served as Bouteux's direct model. It includes a key locating 36 Jesuit colleges, residences, seminaries and churches. From the library of Manoel Paes d'Aragão Trigozo Pereira Magalhães, with his engraved armorial bookplate in the first volume and each volume with his owner's entry. In very good condition, with only a tiny marginal worm hole in a couple leaves and a few leaves slightly browned. The bindings contain several small wormholes and the spines and corners are slightly damaged, but they are otherwise in good condition. Only Portuguese edition of an account of the Jesuits in Japan, with a folding map.

[VIRGIN OF ATOCHA]. Concordia, y transaccion hecha entre el ilustrissimo, y reverendissimo señor Don Fray Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman

Burgos?, 1679. No Binding. Very Good. Folio, [28.5 x 19 cm]. (1) f. title page, 14 ff., with engraving on title page. Disbound. Very minor handsoiling, a few leaves trimmed close at upper margin resulting in partial loss of printed folio numbers, manuscript foliation, contemporary annotations to final page. Generally very good. Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada, Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman (served 1677-92), and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material, the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. The revered statue, a wooden carving now thought to date from the thirteenth century, is here depicted clothed in its golden, baroque regalia and crowned with radiating halos (for centuries the Virgin accrued the rich votive offerings of royal visitors). Housed in the Basilica de Neustra Señora de Atocha in Madrid, the Virgin was long especially favored by the kings and queens of Spain, and her presence on the title of this legal document functions as a manner of royal certification (the text ends with the printed approval of Carlos II, here simply "YO EL REY"). OCLC and KVK locate only one copy of this text, that housed at the Universidad de Sevilla. * Not in Palau; the present copy collates with the Seville copy.
