He is, perhaps, best remembered for his monumental work \"A Display of Heraldry\" which was first published in London in 1610. Born in 1565 (some date 1550) in the county of Herefordshire. This part of England is very close to the border with Wales and Guillim\'s ancestors were probably of Welsh extraction. He was educated at Brasenose College in Oxford University. In 1575 a John Guillim of Minsterworth married Frances Dennis, and raised a family of one boy, John, and three girls, Margaret, Frances, and Priscilla - unreliable source? The first record of his involvement with heraldry is the Earl Marshal\'s warrant, dated 23 February 1604, permitting him to bear the tabard of the Portsmouth Pursuivant Extraordinary. From Michaelmas 1613, he was receiving a salary from the College of Arms, though his official appointment as Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary was not made until 1618. The Display of Heraldry was written around 1610 and reprinted as early as 1611. There were seven further editions of the book following Guillim\'s death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Some historians have suggested that the original author of the Display of Heraldry was a clergyman named John Barkham who was unwilling to have the work published in his own name. Guillim\'s death is recorded as having occurred on 7 May 1621, probably at Minsterworth, although there is no record of his place of burial.Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth (1734 - 1823) was a Scottish judge, was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1783 and Lord Advocate in 1784. He became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Burghs in the same year. He was Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General from 1789 to 1808. In 1808, he was created a baronet. He also was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1799, and died in 1823 aged eighty-nine years.Source: Wikipedia Versand D: 9,90 EUR

1679 Vellum Bound HERODOTUS / CTESIAS HISTORIUM NOVEM in LATIN-GREEK with MAP of the MIDDLE EAST

Typis E. Horton & J. Grover, Impensis Johannis Dunmore, Richardi Chiswel, Benjamin Tooke, & Thomas Sawbridge: London, 1679. HERODOTUS / CTESIAS - HISTORIARUM LIBRI IX NOVEM MUSARUM NOMINIBUS INSCRIPTI... (plus) DE VITA HOMERI... Edited by THOMAS GALE. A 1679 Antique Greek History of the Ancient World bound in Vellum, with a Fold-Open Map. Text in parallel GREEK and LATIN. LONDINI : Typis E. Horton & J. Grover, Impensis Johannis Dunmore, Richardi Chiswel, Benjamin Tooke, & Thomas Sawbridge, MDCLXXIX (1679). VELLUM COVERED BOARDS, six raised spine bands, gilt designs and framing on both the front and rear covers, gilt flower in each spine compartment, manuscript title in one of the upper spine compartments, large format, 8.5x13". Pagination: [72] (various introductory pages), 1-557 (the 9 books of History), 558-708 (De Vita Homeri, Appendices, Fragmenta), [78] (Apologia pro Herodoto, Indexes, Chronologia), Indexes and Appendices), 33 (Appendices, Notes). The double-page fold-open map of the Middle East is bound in prior to numbered page 1. CONDITION: The Vellum Covering is split at the front spine fold, but the front board itself is holding well; the rear spine fold is splitting for 2" at the top and 1" at the bottom; the vellum is rubbed, soiled and scratched, mainly from age and handling; overall the vellum covers remain firmly bound and their gilt designs fairly bright; lovely covers in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library sort of way; internally, the vellum is pulling away from the area where it folds over the inside of the boards, but it still remains well attached; there is a lovely bookplate of "Henry Harcourt Horn" with a unicorn design on the front pastedown; the rear pastedown has tears; there is shorelining to the upper area of the title page and the subsequent 20 or so pages, dark on a few of them, but the text is always clear beneath, otherwise the inner pages are in remarkably good condition, just a spot, bit of foxing, crease, rub, or small shoreline, here and there, overall the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The double page fold-open map of the Middle East remains very nice. A Quite Lovely Copy of this Rare Book. This 336 year-old 1679 Vellum Bound edition is SCARCE. Fair

With title-pages printed in red and black, 5 folding engraved plates, 1 folding engraved map of Japan (28×42 cm) and 1 engraved illustration in the text.       Alt Japan Katalog 381; Cordier, Japonica, col. 401; for the map: Hubbard, Japoniae insulae 96. First and only Portuguese edition of Jean Crasset's Histoire de l'eglise du Japon (1679), the only edition in any language to include a map of Japan. Jean Crasset, a French Jesuit, based his work on François Solier's Histoire ecclesiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon (1627) and continued the account from 1624 to 1658. It gives an elaborate history of the Jesuit mission in Japan, beginning with Francis Xaver. The plates, by Miguel (Michel) le Bouteux, show Japanese costumes, the emperor's palace and an execution of Jesuit missionaries. Bouteux copied the map from a 1646 map of Japan titled "Japponiae nova" in Antonio Francisco Cardim's Fasciculus e Japponicis floribus, an illustrated history of Jesuit martyrdom in Japan. Manoel da Sylva published a Portuguese translation of Cardim's history in 1650, which most likely served as Bouteux's direct model. It includes a key locating 36 Jesuit colleges, residences, seminaries and churches. From the library of Manoel Paes d'Aragão Trigozo Pereira Magalhães, with his engraved armorial bookplate in the first volume and each volume with his owner's entry. In very good condition, with only a tiny marginal worm hole in a couple leaves and a few leaves slightly browned. The bindings contain several small wormholes and the spines and corners are slightly damaged, but they are otherwise in good condition. Only Portuguese edition of an account of the Jesuits in Japan, with a folding map.

[VIRGIN OF ATOCHA]. Concordia, y transaccion hecha entre el ilustrissimo, y reverendissimo señor Don Fray Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman

Burgos?, 1679. No Binding. Very Good. Folio, [28.5 x 19 cm]. (1) f. title page, 14 ff., with engraving on title page. Disbound. Very minor handsoiling, a few leaves trimmed close at upper margin resulting in partial loss of printed folio numbers, manuscript foliation, contemporary annotations to final page. Generally very good. Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada, Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman (served 1677-92), and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material, the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. The revered statue, a wooden carving now thought to date from the thirteenth century, is here depicted clothed in its golden, baroque regalia and crowned with radiating halos (for centuries the Virgin accrued the rich votive offerings of royal visitors). Housed in the Basilica de Neustra Señora de Atocha in Madrid, the Virgin was long especially favored by the kings and queens of Spain, and her presence on the title of this legal document functions as a manner of royal certification (the text ends with the printed approval of Carlos II, here simply "YO EL REY"). OCLC and KVK locate only one copy of this text, that housed at the Universidad de Sevilla. * Not in Palau; the present copy collates with the Seville copy.

1679. BLOEMAERT, Abraham and Frederik. Artis Apellae Liber [Tekenboek van Abraham Bloemaart] / The Drawing Book of Abraham Bloemaert. Complete set of 160 engravings in eight parts, including the chiaroscuro woodcut title-page. Folio, 326 x 238 mm, bound in contemporary Dutch brown calf, blind-tooled spine. Amsterdam: Nicholaes Visscher, 1679-1702. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of Abraham Bloemaert's Drawing Book (Tekenboek), illustrated with engravings by Frederik Bloemaert (ca. 1610-1669) after his father's designs. Abraham Bloemaert's original life drawings, which were executed mainly between 1625-1635 and 1645-1650, include multiple studies of hands, feet, arms, legs, male and female profiles, nudes, putti and costumed figures, seen in various poses, from varied angles, and under various lighting conditions, plus a number of domestic animals. Abraham Bloemaert intended his drawings (later converted by his son into engravings) to serve as a teaching collection of visual models for practicing artists. The publishing history is as follows: a variant edition containing between 100 and 120 engraved plates was issued by Bloemaert's son Frederik between 1650 and 1656 under the title: Artis Apellae Liber. The 1650-56 edition is so rare it is unobtainable today. It is recorded in only three copies: British Museum (120 plates), Bibliothèque Nationale de France (100 plates) and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (120 plates). The extreme rarity of all early editions of Bloemaert's Tekenboek reflects the fact that a very limited number were originally printed, and that the early printings did not survive the heavy use received by artists and the assistants in the artist's studio. The present copy belongs to the true First Edition (Roethlisberger 1a, 393, Visscher edition), complete with 160 engraved plates plus the chiaroscuro woodcut title, all in very good impressions. It is significant that Roethlisberger, in his massive catalogue raisonné of the work of Abraham Bloemaert and His Sons (Doornspijk, 1993) reproduces the entire set of engravings from the 1740 edition. Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651) was successful as a teacher not only of his four sons but also of the leading Dutch Caravaggisti (e.g., Terbrugghen and Honthorst) and virtually every Utrecht master painter/artist. Besides Hendrik Goltzius, Abraham Bloemaert and his son Frederik were among the earliest to combine the chiaroscuro woodblock technique with the engraved and etched line (Hind). Unlike most drawing books "Bloemaert's drawing examples are not derived from other authors" (Bolten). Very occasional browning or spotting, overall, a fine, clean copy. PROVENANCE: Illegible signature, Nuremberg, on front flyleaf. Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow, with ex-libris, their sale Christie's NY #2800, Lot 402. Roethlisberger 1a, 393 (reproductions of every plate, Roethlisberger II, T1-T166). Bolten, Method and Practice: Dutch and Flemish Drawing Books 1600-1750, pp. 48-67 and passim (24 reproductions). Hollstein, Dutch and Flemish (F. Bloemaert) 36-155. Strauss, Chiaroscuro 346. See: Caroline Fowler, Between the Heart and the Mind: Ways of Drawing in the Seventeenth Century, Internet Resource, Princeton University, for long discussion of Bloemaert's Tekenboek.

Ludovico Magno theses ex Universa Philosophia

1679. MENESTRIER, Claude-François. -- LA TOUR D'AUVERGNE, Louis Charles de, Prince de Turenne. Ludovico Magno theses ex universa philosophia dicat et consecrat Ludovicus a Turre-Arverniæ princeps Turennius. [16] pp., (page [4] blank). Engraved throughout: calligraphic title and text engraved by Louis Michault within elaborate emblematic and historiated borders engraved by Louis Cossin (i.e., Coquin) after Pierre-Paul Sevin. [Clermont Ferrand?], 1679. BOUND WITH: MENESTRIER, Claude-François and René d'ORIVAL. "A son Altesse Serenissime Monseigneur Louis-Auguste Prince Souverain de Dombes, sur son Imprimerie de Trévoux…" 4 ff., folio (405 x 267 mm.), deckle edges. [N.p., ca. 1701-1704]. Folio, 447 x 300 mm, bound in early 18th-century French red morocco gilt, sides paneled à la Du Seuil with inner and outer triple fillets, arabesque lozenge tools at corners of inner panel, spine intricately gold-tooled in compartments, title gilt-lettered in second compartment, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A splendid association copy of the First Edition of this magnificently-illustrated thesis in philosophy, printed in only a very few copies for private circulation. The large, full-page engraved plates are impressive: full of allegorical, mythological, emblematic and symbolic imagery. They were designed by the Jesuit monk and antiquarian Claude-François Menestrier. Dedicated to Louis XIV, the edition is imaginatively illustrated, with an engraved title lettered on a banner set before a background of drapery, emblems of the arts and sciences at foot, and at top a pair of allegorical figures holding the Prince's arms; a medallion portrait of the King within an allegorical composition of putti and mythological figures; and 12 pages of engraved text, each within a different elaborate and carefully conceived allegorical page border, containing mythological and allegorical figures ("énigmes") and four emblems or emblematic scenes within cartouches. 28 of the emblems were devised by the Jesuit antiquarian and homme de lettres Claude-François Menestrier, whose manifold interests included heraldry and emblem theory. At the top of each engraving is a detailed scene representing one of the military exploits of the last two campaigns of Louis XIV, most with Latin inscriptions, several also conceived by Menestrier, and the others by le père La Rue, who wrote the dedicatory epistle. The title is signed by Louis Cossin (né Coquin), after Pierre-Paul Sevin; the remaining engravings are incorrectly attributed by Guilmard and the authors of Inventaire du fonds français to Cossin, who simply reproduced in engraving the original compositions of Sevin, a Lyonese painter known for his renderings of historical scenes, portraits and emblematic suites. Bound at the end is an undated pamphlet containing laudatory verses by Menestrier and René d'Orival in French and Latin. The first long poem, in French alexandrines, is dedicated to Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, Prince de Dombes (and Duc de Maine) and praises the royal press of Trévoux, founded in 1603 but only achieved prominence under Louis-Auguste's patronage. Also mentioned is the new Catholic French-Latin Dictionnaire universel français et latin, later known as the Dictionnaire de Trévoux, which the press published in 1704. The Dictionnaire is also the subject of one of the shorter Latin poems by Menestrier; according to Allut this appeared in the prefatory material of the Dictionnaire itself. The pamphlet may therefore date to 1704, or it may have been printed before publication of the completed dictionary; in his bibliography Allut places it amongst imprints from 1701. Some minor marginal discoloration, else an impeccable and beautifully bound copy of an extremely rare masterpiece of seventeenth-century French book illustration. A single copy is recorded in an American library (Getty Research Institute). Few survive, and fewer still in the splendid condition of the present copy. PROVENANCE: de Bardonelle, contemporary signature at foot of title; Paul Allut, inscription on front flyleaf (sale 10 Feb. 1868); Joseph Renard, bookplate (sale, 21 March 1881, OR 12 May 1884). This copy is especially distinguished in that BOTH the principal bibliographers and biographers of Menestrier, Paul Allut, author of the Recherches sur la vie et sur les œuvres du P. Claude François Menestrier (Lyon, 1856), and Joseph Renard, whose Catalogue des oeuvres imprimées de Claude-François Menestrier was posthumously edited by Carlos Sommervogel and appeared at Lyon in 1883 were owners.
