[SPINOZA (Baruch)]
[Click Below for Full Description]

BEHN, Aphra.
London: printed by E. Flesher for Richard Tonson, 1678. Quarto (200 x 136 mm). Nineteenth-century half vellum, marbled paper sides, titles in gilt to black morocco spine label, top and bottom edges marbled. Bookseller's ticket of T. Connolly, Dublin to front pastedown. Slight shaving to headlines, running titles, pagination and catchwords without any loss of comprehension. Boards very slightly bowed, minor rubbing to extremities, very faint water-staining to a couple of gatherings, book block edges foxed; a very good copy indeed. First edition of this important piece of early feminist writing. Sir Patient Fancy, often considered the most cynical of Behn's plays, was first staged in 1678. The work, which is a sex comedy in the style of her notable work The Rover (anonymously published in 1677), "presents and satirises virtually every type of marriage conceivable at the end of the seventeenth-century", allowing "adultery to go unpunished and hypocrisy to be rewarded" ( Kreis-Schinck, p. 57; ODNB). The play "mocked old dissenting merchants and country bumpkins; and its assertive epilogue defended a woman's right to compose plays" (ibid,) The concluding epilogue of this work, noted as being spoken by Nell Gwynne, clearly states Behn's position, "pray tell me then, Why women should not write as well as men". When published, Sir Patient Fancy included a defence of Behn against both plagiarism and bawdiness, noting that she was "writing 'for Bread and not ashamed to owne it'" (ibid.). Behn is undoubtedly one of the most significant Restoration writers. Her short story Oroonoko has … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

It is showing inhabitants and typical animals of the continent.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

- cat. Bound in later stiff grey card stock paper covers, with title hand-inked to front cover. Bookplate [Gilmour of Lundin and Montrave, signed in the plate, "A. S. Leslie, 1898"]. Paper a bit grubby from use, with leaves trimmed a bit lean. Old repair to title leaf. A VG copy. Item #36836 This is a very rare essay about the inscription on MacDuff's Cross in Fife, Scotland. "According to tradition it marks the spot where the Thane of Fife passed on his way to Auchtermuchty while fleeing from Macbeth. It was erected by Malcolm III to commemorate the death of Macbeth. The inscription along with the shaft were destroyed at the Reformation and only the base remains... Although badly damaged in 1559 by the Reformers, the cross is still very much a legendary place of sanctuary for all those of the MacDuff clan who had been involved in murder. Such MacDuff clan members could achieve atonement by performing a series of rituals. Having touched the MacDuff stone, they would then wash themselves nine times at nearby Ninewells. They would also have to pay a forfeit of nine cows.". [Attributes: First Edition]

The book had been officially banned in 1674 by the State of Holland. "Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and the Tractatus contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion, in that speculation and precepts of conduct cannot collide. Spinoza, to whom any controversy was abhorrent, did not publish the Tractatus until 1670, and then anonymously with a bogus imprint" - PMM. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 153 (Latin edition).

[Click Below for Full Description]
