The detail throughout the is excellent, especially along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, which are shown extending to their theoretical sources, the latter being a large lake in Kansas. The detail in the South, Southwest and Texas includes early roads, and extensive notes regarding early exploration and Indian Villages. The river systems between the Mississippi and the Appalachians are equally fascinating, especially since this area would be so thoroughly explored in the next several decades. Large inset at top shows the Mississippi Delta and Gulf Coast. Spectacular cartouche portrays the history of John Law's Mississippi Bubble. A rare map of the Balearic Islands with the Port of Mahon in Menorca and smaller inset map of map of the western Mediterranean with Gibraltar. North Africa is shown under the name "Barbary". The top left has an unusually designed title cartouche accompanied with two eagles and a coat of arms and unusual plants. Directly under this cartouche is a mileage scale. In the Mediterranean Sea is a wind rose. The prime meridian is the French standard centered on Paris. Below the map is information on the three islands. In this text Seutter makes reference to the information from Bellin. Matthias Seutter (1678-1757) was an apprentice to cartographer Johann Homann whom he would later directly compete with from his business based in Augsburg. He became the Imperial geographer to Karl IV in 1731. The business also have an office in Venice and made celestial globes. His son in law Tobias Conrad Lotter continued the business after his death. A very fine map of the Americas, with two large cartouches, copied from Visscher's map but reversed, in full original colour, making this a very decorative item. California is an island; El Dorado is marked next to Parime Lacus in South America; and the five Great Lakes appear for the first time on a Dutch map, although Superior and Michigan are open-ended in the west. This example is from state three of seven, still with eleven galleons but before the addition of New Guinea and 'Terra Esonis'. BURDEN: 465; McCLAUGHLIN: 49.
