TTRBR1 1678 Printed by Uri Fayvesh/Jekuthiel ben Isaac Blitz LANGUAGE: YIDDISH VG CONDITION, FINE COPY! IN CLOTH COVERS FINE COPY OF THE FIRST YIDDISH EDITION OF THE BIBLE THE FIRST TWO Yiddish translations of the complete Old Testament appeared almost simultaneously in Amsterdam in 1678 - 1679. Yiddish translations and glossaries of parts of the Hebrew Bible had occupied an important place in Yiddish publishing from its beginnings in the first half of the sixteenth century. The earlier texts only covered those sections of the Old Testament which are part of the liturgy: the Torah (Pentateuch), the haftarot (selected portions of the Prophets and the hagiographer which are read in synagogue after the weekly portions of the Torah), the five megillot ('Scrolls', i. e., Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther), and Psalms. Uri Fayvesh Halevi, the first publisher to start printing a complete Yiddish Old Testament, had been influenced by the example of Sephardi Jews and Christians because they possessed good translations. In Amsterdam, where contacts between Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardim and Christians were more extensive than elsewhere, he became aware of the fact that others had a better knowledge of 'their' Bible than they themselves had. The influence of the official Dutch Bible translation, the Statenvertaling, was particularly important. Its first edition had appeared in 1637 and within decades it had acquired great authority and was a publishing success. Since there were many Yiddish speakers in Europe who were literate but did not understand the Hebrew ori … [Click Below for Full Description]

Romania is a sovereign state located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. It borders the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. Modern Romania was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia.Prior to the Roman conquest of Dacia, the territories between the Danube and Dniester rivers were inhabited by various Thracian peoples, including the Dacians and the Getae. In the Middle Ages, Romanians lived in three principalities: Moldavia and in Transylvania. The existence of independent Romanian voivodeships in Transylvania as early as the 9th century is mentioned in Gesta Hungarorum[ but by the 11th century, Transylvania had become a largely autonomous part of the Kingdom of Hungary In the other parts, many small local states with varying degrees of independence developed, but only under Basarab I and Bogdan I the larger principalities of Wallachia and Moldaviawould emerge in the 14th century to fight the threat of the Ottoman Empire.By 1541, the entire Balkan peninsula and most of Hungary had been conquered and integrated into the Ottoman Empire. SCHEFFER, Johannes
Holmiae: Excudit Nicolaus Wankiif, 1678. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Johannes Scheffer was a 17th-century Swedish humanist known serving as librarian to Christian of Sweden and studies in classical philology. However, in addition to a curious treatise on ancient vehicles, Scheffer published a work on ancient heraldry - 'De Antiquis Verisque'. This work was a result of Scheffer's time and focus on Swedish archaeological studies. It includes 13 impressive engravings of Swedish coat-of-arms, knights, emblems, coins, and royal crests. The controversy of this work lies within the descriptions of these arms - arms which Sweden and Denmark disputed the rights to for centuries.

Although the work appears to a large extent to be defending and using the views of Plato and Aristotle (treated in a manner typical of Renaissance humanism rather than of later scholarship) to attack the views of Democritu … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPINOZA, Benedictus de; Gabriel de Saint-Glain, trans. attrib
Claude Emanuel / Jacob Smith, 1678. In 1655 Spinoza began work on this treatise, with which he hoped to accomplish two ends: to bring attention to the "prejudices of the theologians" while refuting accusations of atheism made against him (see Fritz Bamberger, "The Early Editions of Spinoza's 'Tractatus Theologico-Politicus,'" in "Studies in Bibliography and Booklore," Vol. 5, p. 9). The work did not appear until fifteen years later, in 1670, anonymously, under a false imprint, and in modern Latin in order to bypass censorship. This translation, the earliest in French, first appeared in 1678 under the title "Clef du Sanctuaire. " That title was swiftly changed, together with its false imprint, due to political lashback (indeed, by the early 1680s, mention was made by the censors of Geneva of this and other "mechans livres" (cf. Maria-Cristina Pitassi, "De la Censure à la Réfutation: L'Académie de Genève," in "Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale," Vol. 93, no. 2, Avril-Juin, 1988, p. 150)). The present copy conforms to the description of an entirely new printing of the work, seen here with two title pages (as noted in Brunet), and featuring slightly taller type and the misspelled "PREEACE" on leaf [*9] verso (Bamberger, p.32). Though the translation issued under the title "Clef du Sanctuaire" is the rarest the three, Brunet's dismissal of this edition as having "little value" may perhaps be considered an overstatement - it is among the earliest editions in French and carries with it a fascinating bibliographical history. See BRUNET V, p. 492; PMM 153 (citing the 1670 edition). … [Click Below for Full Description]
