Paris, G. Quinet, 1678.. Bon exemplaire. Interieur tres frais..

Leeuwenhoek, Anthony van WITH Derham, William WITH Keill, Jo. WITH Picolo [Piccolo] WITH Hauksbee, Francis
FIRST EDITION OF ELEVEN OF ANTHONY VAN LEEUWENHOEK'S SEMINAL "MICROSCOPICAL OBSERVATIONS" (which took the form of letters, some quite lengthy) to the Philosophical Transactions. The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. As such, the Phil Trans established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review that have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since. Works in every field of science are present. Note that this is the entire original volume and not one of the later 'abridged' volumes. The Leeuwenhoek is accompanied by important papers by Keill, Picolo [Piccolo], Leeuwenhoek, and Hauksbee. Leeuwenhoek's most important discoveries are contained in these celebrated letters to henry Oldenburg, the Society's secretary. Here he communicates his epoch-making experiments with the microscope, revealing to his contemporaries a previously unknown world -- the world of microorganisms. ALSO INCLUDED: First edition, first issue of Derham's report of the first accurate measurement of the speed of sound in air. The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. The English Natural Philosopher William Derham's experiment, produced the earliest, reasonably accurate estimate of the speed of sound by employing his 16-foot long telescope (also used when measuring the velocity of sound). "Derham utilized guns fired from various church towers and observed the flashes from distances up to 20.1 km (12.5 miles)," observed their firing by placing his tele … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. As such, the Phil Trans established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review that have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since. This map and its accompanying letters are "usually been considered the first printed account of California, and it certainly was the first to obtain any circulation. They were the first "successful attempt of the famous Society of Jesus (Jesuits) to reduce to some sort of civilization the barbarians of the peninsula and maintain its extablishments in that inhospitable country must always be considered as one of its chief claims to glory" (Sloan). Derham's accuracy was affirmed by Newton. "The distance from where the gun was fired was found by triangulation, and simple division (time/distance) provided velocity. Lastly, by making many observations, using a range of different distances, the inaccuracy of the half-second pendulum could be averaged out, giving his final estimate of the speed of sound" (Wikipedia). 17 PAPERS BY THE NATURAL PHILOSOPHER, INSTRUMENT MAKER, AND PERSONAL LAB ASSISTANT TO ISAAC NEWTON, including "An account of an experiment touching the different densities of air from the greatest natural heat to the greatest natural cold in this climate," Hauksbee's discovery of Charles' law of gases which states that, for a given mass of gas at a constant pressure, the volume of the gas is proportional to its temperature. The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. As such, the Phil Trans established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review that have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since. Significantly, Hauksbee was Newton's lab assistant from 1678 on. In 1703, Newton appointed Hauksbee president of the Royal Society, curator, instrument maker and -- most importantly -- head experimentalist to the Royal Society. SEUTTER, Matthaus
Augsburg. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.5 x 22.75". This unique and rare map centers on the Black Sea, showing the surrounding coastal areas of Southern Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland. The confluence of cultures in this region is reflected in the labeling of the Black Sea in seven different languages: Latin, French, Turkish, Russian, Polish, Greek, and German. The blank expanse of the sea, in which these titles are set, sets off the water from the amply detailed land around it and makes it a visual focal point. In the surrounding land, subtle hand coloring helps to define borders and differentiate among the coastal regions. The lower left corner of the map contains a decorative title cartouche depicts some of the variety of cultures to whom the Black Sea is a significant economic resource. This map appeared in Matthaus Seutter's "Atlas novus sive tabulae geographicae totius orbis." It is in very good condition and is overall bright. Minor stains in upper right quadrant of the map. Narrow margins. Matthaus Seutter the Elder (1678-1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher based in Augsburg. He apprenticed with J.B. Homann in Nuremberg and, in fact, this map was likely modeled on Homann's 1725 precedent. Seutter was awarded the title of Imperial Geographer by Karl VI in 1731.

Hardcover. %0D%0AThis is a scarce two volume set of this history of the Church. %0D%0AThree volumes bound in two. %0D%0AIn Latin. %0D%0AHenricum Spondanum, otherwise Henry Sponde or Henri de Sponde was a convert from Calvinism and Bishop of Pamiers. After studying humanities at the Calvinist college of Orthez, he accompanied the royal ambassador to Scotland and, upon his return, took up the study of jurisprudence. Convinced of the truth of the Catholic religion by the writings of Bellarmine and the instructions of Duperron he became a Catholic in 1595 and was later ordained a priest. %0D%0AThis work is Sponde's continuation of the Venerable Baronius Caesar's master work Annales ecclesiastici a Christi nato ad annum 1198. Baronius Caesar was an italian ecclesiastical historian and Cardinal. As a Vatican librarian, Baronius had access to the sources in the archives which accounts for the thorough nature of his work. %0D%0ACondition: %0D%0AIn full calf bindings. "... the Spanishes Liederspiel... treated Geibel's translations... in quasi-dramatic form for vocal quartet, duet or solo with piano accompaniment... The poems later inspired Wolf and the genre Brahms. The style is novel; there are syncopations in the accompaniment and bold declamation in the voice, with free-ranging melodies, chromatic harmonies and independent piano parts. All this is often expressly related to the sense of the words." Walker, ed.: Robert Schumann, p. 151.

Back to Jansenist nerves with title and date. Cropped short in title page. Bernard de Montfaucon, from Roquetaillade, near Limoux, was one of the most learned men of his time and this is one of the most famous of his time, including his monumental work: ancient explained in FIGS. He was a Benedictine monk of the Congregation of St. Maur. The Abbey of La Trappe, founded by the Cistercian order was annexed to the domain of the Benedictines. It will be reformed according to the seventeenth 'the rule of strict compliance by Rance, much more rigid and severe than that of the Cistercians.
