SCHEFFERUS, JOHANNES.
Sthlm, N. Wankiif, 1678-(80). 4:o. (8),318,321-325,(3) s. Något lagerfläckig, främst i marginalerna. [Click Below for Full Description]

LA FAYETTE Madame de (PIOCHE DE LA VERGNE Marie-Madeleine dite) (ou COURTILZ DE SANDRAS Gatien)
Chez Estienne Michallet, 1678. - Chez Estienne Michallet, à Paris 1678, In 12 (10x15,5cm), (8) 456pp., relié. - Prima edizione, molto rara, a lungo attribuito a Madame de La Fayette, pubblicato l'anno di La principessa di Cleves, poi Courtilz de Sandras e anche Pierre Daniel Huet. Marocco completa fine del XIX firmato Bellevallée rosso lucido vecchio. Torna ai nervi giansenista. Ampio fregio interno dorato. Artist: Seutter Matthias (- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c 1728 1678 - Artist: Seutter, Matthias (1678- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c. 1728; - Condition: Left margin perfectly replaced and partly right margin; Map depicts the Caspian sea with its surrounding countries, such as Atrachan, Kurkent, Maracanda, Kesker, Sagawat and Derbent.MatthŠus Seutter was born in 1685, the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World (Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt) with 46 maps, the 1734 Large Atlas (Grosser Atlas) with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas Small Atlas (Atlas minor) with 64 maps. MatthŠus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

BARCLAY, Robert
[London]: [s.n.]. Printed in the Year 1678 [22], 392pp, [22]. Contemporary blind-ruled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Rubbed, with slight chipping to spine, short cracks to upper joints, bumping and tearing to corners. Some chipping/loss to endpapers. Elizabeth Bland's copy, with her name to lettering-piece; more lately in the Selbourne LIbrary, with small ink-stamp to verso of title. Early ink annotations (in two separate hands?) to the margins of seven leaves. Twentieth-century biographical notes on two Friends named Elizabeth Bland are loosely inserted. Robert Barclay (1643-1690), pioneering Scottish Quaker. Despite concluding his education at the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Scots College, Paris, then under the stewardship of his uncle (also Robert Barclay), Barclay instead followed his father's example and joined the Society of Friends in 1667. An ardent and outspoken theological scholar, Robert Barclay began defending his own faith in certain tracts during the early 1670s - including Truth cleared of Calumnies (1670), and a Catechism and Confession of Faith (1673). Composed and first printed in Latin (Amsterdam, 1676), An Apology provoked widespread theological debate and secured great popularity amongst Quakers; providing the most complete definition and defence of the Quaker movement - often described as the 'Quaker Bible' - and it is little wonder that a translation into English swiftly followed. Focusing particularly on the primary importance of 'The Inward Light of Christ' to Quaker faith, this English translation has has remained in print … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPINNIKER, Adriaan.
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 760; NNBW IV, cols. 1260-1262; Praz, p. 502. First and only edition of an emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). It is an independent continuation of Spinniker's Leerzaame Zinnebeelden (Haarlem, 1714) which contained 50 emblems by Vincent van de Vinne (1686-1742), the grandson of the famous painter Vincent vander Vinne (1629-1702) who was a pupil of Frans Hals in Haarlem. The 30 emblems in the present work are by the same artist, and represent scenes from daily life, scenes in the country, in shops, households, etc. and are accompanied by Bible verses underneath. An explanation of each emblem is given on the following pages in the form of a poem. The second part has an individual title-page, Spiegel der boetvaardigheid en genade, and contains 4 engravings by Jan Caspar Philips (1690-1775). It deals with the concepts of repentance and mercy with reference to Bible passages, and ends with the Stichtelyke gezangen: devout songs.Wrappers damaged, spine has disappeared and bookblock is split. Otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed, slightly browned with a few occasional small spots.

Winter, Georg Simon
Nürnberg : Wolfgang Moritz Endter, 1678 and 1687. Full Vellum. Very Good. Equine porn from Baroque Germany? Also the ultimate in equine coifs from that time. 34 by 21 cm. The first volume has 46 engraved illustrations, one being the half-title plate, the others, about a third of a page each. The second work comes with 43 plates, including title (or half-title), five folding plates, five two-paged plates and three plates of which have two illustrations each and are counted as two in the book's own numbering system (but not by us). Other copies located on OCLC First Search have the same or lower plate count, with a single copy, that owned by the Huntington Library, supposedly containing 48 leaves of plates. We believe this counts the double paged plates as two each, and thus our copy is complete. The first work is in Latin and German, the second work also includes French and Italian. The first work is an important work in the veterinary literature, while the second, concerned primarily with the breeding of horses, has the far wider appeal to today's audience for equine literature because of the graphic and sometimes very strange plates. The vellum is heavily soiled and wizened, with repaired tears along joints, and large cup stain on front, etc. Spine tip repaired. Missing flap to plate 10 of the second volume.

F[IRMIN], T[homas]
London, printed for Brabazon Aylmer at the three Pigeons in Cornhill, 1678. 4to., 24pp., bound in 20th century marbled boards with title in gilt on red morocco spine label. A very good crisp copy. First edition. Thomas Firmin (1632-1697) had learned to distrust mere almsgiving and made it his business to enquire into the condition of the poor by personal investigation and to reduce the causes of social distress by economic effort. His first philanthropic experiment was occasioned by the trade disorganisation of the plague year (1665). He provided employment at making up clothing for hands thrown out of work. Other schemes involved the building of storage space by the river for corn and coals to be retailed to the poor in hard times at cost price. Early in 1676 he had started a workhouse in Little Britain, for the employment of the poor in the linen manufacture. Firmin employed as many as 1700 spinners, besides flax dressers and weavers. His arrangements for the comfort and cleanliness of his hands and for the industrial training of children rescued from the streets was admirable. But the scheme never paid. Firmin sold his linens at cost price and the annual loss on the venture was £200. In addition to his philanthropic efforts on behalf of the poor, Firmin was a prison philanthropist and worked hard to alleviate the condition of prisoners, particularly those imprisoned for debt. The present work is his most important and best known publication. It contains, amongst other things, an account of his own Work-House.

SALMON, William
London: Printed by Thomas Dawks, 1678. [16], 896pp. Contemporary blind-ruled unlettered calf. A handsome copy with slight rubbing, small chips to spine and short cracks to joints, bumping to corners. Occasional browning to text, small paper flaws to E7 and Cc2 with slight loss of text, else a crisp copy. Early ink inscription of 'Elizabeth Wobryche' to title. A remarkable survival in a fresh contemporary binding of this popular, and significantly vernacular, guide to medicines translated by William Salmon (1644-1713), English medical empiric and writer. Taken from the Latin hand-book of the Royal College of Physicians, London, Salmon explains in his dedication that he has 'added several others...and a Rational Introductive Discourse to the whole Praxis of Chymistry', the whole 'accommodated...to...Court and Camp...for the Military Chyrugian both by Sea and Land, and universally fitted to te whole Art of Healing'. ESTC locates only six copies in British libraries (BL, Cambridge Gonville and Caius, Dr. Williams' Library, Oxford, Oxford Lincoln College, RCP) and only six further elsewhere (Columbia, Huntington, New York Academy of Medicine, NLM, Texas and UCLA). Rarer still in the salerooms, where excepting this copy appearing three times, only one further appears to have sold since 1970. Wing S437A.. First edition. 8vo.
