Light toning, faint vertical and horizontal fold lines, 4-1/2" section excised from foot of left margin, old tear professionally repaired with no loss of printed surface. A well-preserved copy. * William Staley (or Stayley) was one of the victims of the Popish Plot, one of the cruelest hoaxes in British history and the inspiration for a wave of anti-Catholic violence. It was the invention of Titus Oates, an Anglican clergyman, and his friend, Dr. Israel Tonge, a cleric and passionate anti-Catholic. They pretended to have discovered a Jesuit plot to assassinate the King, massacre Protestants, and set James, Duke of York, the King's Catholic brother, on the throne. Convicted as a conspirator, Staley was executed and quartered in 1678. "Instead of his quarters being set upon the city gates the king allowed them to be delivered to his relatives. Mass was said over his remains and a 'grand' funeral was arranged from his father's house on 29 November, before his burial in St Paul's, Covent Garden. This incensed the government so much that the coroner ordered the body to be dug up and delivered to the sheriff to be set upon the city gates" [Oxford Dictionary of National Bio … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. Amsterdam - Gerard van Keulen, ca. 1725
[Click Below for Full Description]

SPINNIKER, Adriaan.
First and only edition of an emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). It is an independent continuation of Spinniker's Leerzaame Zinnebeelden (Haarlem, 1714) which contained 50 emblems by Vincent van de Vinne (1686-1742), the grandson of the famous painter Vincent vander Vinne (1629-1702) who was a pupil of Frans Hals in Haarlem. The 30 emblems in the present work are by the same artist, and represent scenes from daily life, scenes in the country, in shops, households, etc. and are accompanied by Bible verses underneath. An explanation of each emblem is given on the following pages in the form of a poem. The second part has an individual title-page, Spiegel der boetvaardigheid en genade, and contains 4 engravings by Jan Caspar Philips (1690-1775). It deals with the concepts of repentance and mercy with reference to Bible passages, and ends with the Stichtelyke gezangen: devout songs.Wrappers damaged, spine has disappeared and bookblock is split. Otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed, slightly browned with a few occasional small spots.Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 760; NNBW IV, cols. 1260-1262; Praz, p. 502..

Binding worn with some insect damage, binding loosening from book block but still holding, front pastedown detached and tatty, first few signatures loosening and close to detaching, shaken, some worming. Still an acceptable, unrestored copy. First edition. The handbook prints the original Latin of the law books (in black letter, as customary), together with a simplified English translation (in Roman font), in order to simplify the law for ordinary citizens and students. Little is know about the author William Brown (fl. 1671-1705), but he published various legal guides in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, including guides to the Court of Exchequer, the courts of Kings-Bench and Common Pleas, and a handbook for clerks. This particular guide seems to have proved popular, undergoing six editions by 1725. With interesting marks of contemporary ownership: the loose front pastedown with an ornate signature dated 1680, the same signature repeated twice with a new date of 18 January 1693, alongside a pen trial of numbers and Latin words; the same Latin words repeated to the rear pastedown; a neater form of the ornate signature to p. 303; a further different neat early ownership signature to the title page. SPINNIKER, Adriaan.
Second edition of volume 1 and first edition of volume 2 of a very attractive emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). Together they contain 84 beautifully engraved emblems: 80 by Vincent van der Vinne (who also drew and engraved the frontispiece used for both volumes, with its title revised for the continuation) and 4 (for the Spiegel) by J.C. Philips. Isaac van der Vinne's father and nephew were both named Vincent, but the present artist-engraver was probably the nephew (1686-1742). The emblems show scenes from the Bible and are followed by brief excerpts from the relevant parts of the Bible and longer verses giving further information about it. Spinniker was a minister of the church for the Mennonite Congregation in Amsterdam. In fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The binding has a few scuff-marks and some cracks in the spine, but is otherwise very good.Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 759 & 760; Praz, p. 502..
