The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World (Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt) with 46 maps, the 1734 Large Atlas (Grosser Atlas) with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas Small Atlas (Atlas minor) with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

GAYA, Louis de.
[Paris], Chez Sebastien Cramoisy, 1678. 12°, contemporary mottled calf (minor wear), gilt spine with raised bands in five compartments, title stamped in second compartment from head (worn at head and foot, joints starting). Some light browning; printing flaw on A10 with loss of 3-4 words. In very good condition. Added woodcut title, (3 ll.), 172 pp. [pagination skips 145-6, repeats pp. 161-2], 19 woodcut plates [nº 14 frayed at edge]. *** Presumably the second edition of this charmingly-illustrated pocket manual for foot soldiers, and one of the first military works to describe arms and armor in detail. The Traité is known in two Cramoisy editions of 1678: one with an added title and plates engraved by N. Guérard, and this (presumably later) edition with woodcut plates and a completely reset text. An English translation appeared in London later the same year, with a second published in 1680 as part of the anonymous English Military Discipline. In his preface, Gaya explains that, having already discussed soldiering and strategy in his L'Art de la guerre, and there being no need to improve upon existing treatises on fortifications, he will devote this manual to arms and other instruments of war. In the first book (pp. 13-64), Gaya describes and illustrates the various kinds of swords, bayonets, muskets, pistols, pikes, crossbows, armor, and shields presently in use. Flares, fireworks, and mines are discussed in the second book (pp. 65-84). Book three (pp. 85-128) contains information on the types of cannon, mortars, shells, grenades, and battering rams available and general in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria de S. Caterina da Siena.
1678. 4to. (24), 516, 20 pp. With woodcut printer's device on title page and several woodcut head- and tailpieces, and initials. Modern limp vellum with ties. Second edition of one of the most important Italian travellers of the 17th century to the Middle East and India. Vincenzo Maria (Murchio) was a Carmelite missionary with a keen eye and much interest to record manners, customs, and natural history. Travelling through Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Persia, Arabia before arriving in India, he returned to his homeland via Muscat. His book is far more then an intinerary of the Carmelite mission to India: book I recounts the journey to Malabar, also mentioning the Middle East, Mecca, Arabia, religion and other subjects. Book two is about the Christians of St. Thomas; book three is on political, religious and social life of Malabar. Book IV, probably prepared with the aid of Father Matthew, describes the plants of Malabar and the return trip to Europe. With a description of Goa. "Perhaps the most important of the 17th century Italian travellers" (Atabey). - A good copy with slight staining and soiling. Atabey 1297 (3rd edition). Streit V, 538. Cat. NHSM I, p. 240. Herbinius, Johannes
Janssonius van Waesberge, 1678. 4° (196x162 mm). [16, including frontispiece], 267, [17] pp. Engraved allegoric frontispiece, four plates (2 folding depicting the rivers of Eden, and the Trollhättan waterfalls in Norway), 21 fine half-page engravings in text showing European places and waterfalls, among them the Marmore Falls in Umbria, and the rapids of Danube and Rhine. Contemporary leather, spine richly gilt and lettered. Excellent copy. The rare first edition of the first systematic work about the nature and causes of rivers, springs, waterfalls, and whirlpools. After the studies in Wittenberg, the Silesian-born naturalist and Lutheran minister traveled through Germany, Switzerland and Holland, observing meanders, waterfalls, rapids, caves, and subterranean flows, later described in his Dissertationes. Herbinius was the earliest direct follower of Athanasius Kircher?s theories on the earth?s underground, with a central eternal fire, and water and fire channels. He called the earth a terraqueous globe, full of holes, cracks, opening and galleries, in which water from the subterrean abyss circulates continuosly. He also investigates how natural elements and actions cause volcanoes, and among the causes of all these natural wonders ?on and below the earth? he list ?the continous movement of water in the subterranean abyss, which, by virtue of motion drives the water up to the surface of the earth; angels; stars; the spirit of the earth; and air enclosed within earth?. One of the plate depicts the Paradise ? situated by Herbinius in Palestine - with his rivers. A very inter … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Ernest of Saxony].
Folio. Engr., folding frontispiece, t. p., (2), 378 [but: 380], 108, (20) pp. With 10 folding plates, woodcut arms on t. p., and numerous ornamental woodcut initials ins vignettes. Contemp. calf, dated 1681, with giltstamped spine title. Only edition of this elaborate fêtebook, depicting the funeral festivities and sermon for the popular Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (b. 1601, d. 26 March 1675). "One of the great memorial volumes of the Baroque" (Jantz). The frontispiece (dated 1678), showing the bust of Duke Ernest, is signed by Jacob von Sandrart (1630-1708, cf. Thieme/Becker XXIX, 397), as are the fine portrait of the Duke and a scene showing him lying in state among angels; the three views of the closed coffin, the funeral procession, the plate of memorial coins, and the three plates showing the order of the procession are very likely his work as well. The end is brought up by Kaspar von Stieler's "Hoch-Fürstlicher Ehren-Altar", "a giant-sized poem of 616 rhymed trochaic eight-beat lines, followed, with special title page, by 'Josias, Das ist: Der weyland Durchläuchtigste Fürst und Herr, Herr Ernst Herzog zu Sachsen [...] Mit dem Gottseligen Könige Josia verglichen von M. Heinrich Ernst Treibern [...]'; 208 alexandrine lines, with annotations" (Faber du F.). The poet, jurist, and lexicographer Stieler (1632-1707) is often cited as possible editor of the entire fêtebook. - No other copy with 10 plates is known: contains not only the frequently missing portrait (c. 60 x 44 cm), but also both views of the un-draped coffin.
