Antwerp: Naulaeus, 1678. The book is a small, tall 12mo measuring 3”x5”, OCLC 257579910, 140 pp plus 1 unnumbered leaf. Bound in full vellum of the time which is smooth and in good condition. Some normal soiling and a half-moon crack on the front, hand-lettered title to the spine. This is a an early edition of Bossuet's famous and authoritative book on Catholicism and the first--and quite scarce--Latin edition. The 1671 first edition--in French--was criticized by the religious faculty of the Sorbonne, so Bossuet hastily suppressed that edition, made corrections, and then produced another edition. Edited by Claude Fleury (December 6, 1640, Paris – July 14, 1723, Paris a French ecclesiastical historian. his great work, the first of the kind in France, and one for which he had been collecting materials for thirty years— was the Histoire ecclésiastique, aimed at scholars and historians. Herodianus
Published: Oxoniae : E theatro Sheldoniano, 1678. - 1678 GREEK text Herodian Roman Histories Commodus Julius Caesar ROME Alexander Libri VIII / Greek & Latin Text of Oxford Sheldon Herodian or Herodianus (c. 170 – c. 240), was a minor Roman civil servant who wrote a colourful history in Greek titled History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus in eight books covering the years 180 to 238. His work is not entirely reliable although his relatively unbiased account of Elagabalus is more useful than that of Cassius Dio. Herodian's Roman History is a collection of eight books covering the period from the death of Marcus Aurelius in 180 A.D. to the beginning of Gordian III's reign in 238. It provides a first person account of one of the most politically diverse times of the Roman Empire. The Year of the Six Emperors refers to the year 238 AD, during which six people were recognized as emperors of Rome. VASCO Giulio

Il faut avouer cependant qu'elle est plus curieuse qu'utile; car bien peu de gens auraient des yeux susceptibles de lire de suite un tel livre [was heute wohl eher nicht das Problem sein dürfte, sondern eher die mangelhaften Lateinkenntnisse der meisten in Frage kommenden Leser, so auch die rudimentären meinigen ! Madame de LA FAYETTE, Marie-Madeleine PIOCHE DE LA VERGNE, Gatien COURTILZ DE SANDRAS
Chez Estienne Michallet. First Edition, very rare, long attributed to Madame de La Fayette, published the year of The Princess of Cleves, then Courtilz de Sandras and even Pierre Daniel Huet. Full morocco late nineteenth signed Bellevallée glossy red old. Back to nerves Jansenist. Wide frieze gilded interior. Date tail. Very nice copy, well established, large margins, and unwashed. Unlike The Princess of Cleves, or The Princess of Montpensier, the Memoirs of Holland paper is not a new historical character, but displays as a novel of manners which utiise modern names. The work describes, through the love of a Jewish and a Lusignan, life in the Netherlands in the mid seventeenth century; this is one of the only novels daring to face reality as it is and the work deserves to be distinguished in the invention of French fiction as such. The book interested the history and topography of the Netherlands. It should be noted that this work was in the biggest amateur libraries of the nineteenth century (Lignerolles Rochebilière, Rothschild Techener, etc.). --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. SPINNIKER, Adriaan.
1678. Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 759 & 760; Praz, p. 502. Second edition of volume 1 and first edition of volume 2 of a very attractive emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). Together they contain 84 beautifully engraved emblems: 80 by Vincent van der Vinne (who also drew and engraved the frontispiece used for both volumes, with its title revised for the continuation) and 4 (for the Spiegel) by J.C. Philips. Isaac van der Vinne's father and nephew were both named Vincent, but the present artist-engraver was probably the nephew (1686-1742). The emblems show scenes from the Bible and are followed by brief excerpts from the relevant parts of the Bible and longer verses giving further information about it. Spinniker was a minister of the church for the Mennonite Congregation in Amsterdam. In fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The binding has a few scuff-marks and some cracks in the spine, but is otherwise very good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757 ) Augsburg; issued in: Augsburg; date: 1728 1678 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Very good; size in cm : 50 x 57 - Vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.
