Caramuel Lobkowitz (Juan), 1606-1682
Vigevano (Italy), En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado, 1678. First printing of the most ambitious Spanish architectural treatise to date, a provocative work in which the author argues the superiority of "oblique" architecture to "straight" (Vitruvian) architecture, and famously censures Bernini's designs for the colonnade around St. Peter's Square, staircase in the Vatican, and equestrian statue of the Emperor Constantine. The book is the earliest of eight publications issued under the imprint "En la Emprenta Obispal por Camillo Corrado" (Typis Episcopalibus apud Camillum Conradam) at the Italian town of Vigevano, where Caramuel was bishop from 1673 until the end of his life. It is notably difficult to obtain "complete" and in good condition, and its absence from collections of architectural books developed over many years, such as the RIBA/British Architectural Library, Fowler Collection of Early Architectural Books at Johns Hopkins University Library, and Canadian Centre for Architecture, is telling evidence of the difficulty of procuring a copy. (Mollet) is explicit about the planting of allées, width in relation to length, and spacing; the laying out of parterres de broderie and bosquets . and the designing of palissades of beech or hornbeam in the forms of walls, arcades and porticos. Seutter Matthias ( 1678 - 1757 ) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757 ) Augsburg; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca 1730. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 20 x 25,5; - description : Map shows total Benelus with two beautiful cartouches with coat of arms; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matth?us Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

(Many more die from eating or drinking too much than from the sword / war. The image foreground shows soldiers and men overeating and drinking.) Edition: 1678. Copperplate engraving and etching combination on verge type hand laid paper. Description: This delicate engraving originates from 'Thesauri Philo-Politici' / 'Thesaurus Philopoliticus' / 'Politisches Schatzkastleins'. This work was originally created in the period 1623-1632 and consisted of 16 parts, first published separately and then together in 2 books of 8 parts ea. Altogether it had 830 prints. Later editions were published in 1637-1638 by Paul Furst (titled 'Sciographia Cormica') and in 1678 by his widow (titled:'Sciagraphia Cosmica'). Complete editions are scarse. The primary objective was the poetry and accompanying emblems with a moralising symbolism. The city views were secondary and mainly served for decoration. There is no particular tie between the poetry and the city. The city views were mostly engraved after popular engravings at the time from the works of Guicciardini, Braun/Hogenberg, Munster and others. The Poetry consists of a aphorism or theme in German or Latin at the top, a 2 line relating poem in Latin below the image and a 4 line relating poem in German below. In the engravings there is always a foreground which illustrates the theme and a city view in the background.Artists and Engravers: The authors of this work are Daniel Meisner (1585-1625 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Samuel De Turnes, 1678.

Superbe. [Attributes: First Edition]

Vincenzo Maria de S. Caterina da Siena.
1678. 4to. (24), 516, 20 pp. With woodcut printer's device on title page and several woodcut head- and tailpieces, and initials. Modern limp vellum with ties. Second edition of one of the most important Italian travellers of the 17th century to the Middle East and India. Vincenzo Maria (Murchio) was a Carmelite missionary with a keen eye and much interest to record manners, customs, and natural history. Travelling through Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Persia, Arabia before arriving in India, he returned to his homeland via Muscat. His book is far more then an intinerary of the Carmelite mission to India: book I recounts the journey to Malabar, also mentioning the Middle East, Mecca, Arabia, religion and other subjects. Book two is about the Christians of St. Thomas; book three is on political, religious and social life of Malabar. Book IV, probably prepared with the aid of Father Matthew, describes the plants of Malabar and the return trip to Europe. With a description of Goa. "Perhaps the most important of the 17th century Italian travellers" (Atabey). - A good copy with slight staining and soiling. Atabey 1297 (3rd edition). Streit V, 538. Cat. NHSM I, p. 240. Graesse VI, 327. Not in Blackmer or Weber.

London, Printed for Richard Royston, 1678. With engraved title page, title printed in red and black. (22), 889 (misnumbered 899), (1, blank), 84 pp. + 1 leaf 'A Catalogue of Some Books . by R. Royston.' Folio. Later marbled calf, spine gilt with raised bands, title label lost, second label with 'Tom. I' , red edges (very lightly rubbed and shaved). Wing C7471. First edition, scarce. All published. Part two was intended to be an attack against Calvinism, while the third part was an exposition of a theory of free will. Only the first volume however was ever published, and although Cudworth's biographer, Thomas Birch, writing in 1743, was able fully to describe them, neither part II nor Part III now exists in manuscript. Ralph Cudworth (the Younger, 1617-1688), the most systematic metaphysician of the Cambridge Platonist School. The present work is primarily a critique of what Cudworth took to be the two principal forms of atheism -materialism and hylozoism. The materialist Cudworth had especially in mind is Thomas Hobbes. Cudworth attempts to show that Hobbes had revived the doctrines of Protagoras and is therefore subject to the criticisms which Plato had deployed againt Protagoras in the Theaetetus. On the side of hylozoism Strato is the official target. However, Cudworth's Dutch friends had certainly reported to him the views which Spinoza was circulating in manuscript. Cudworth remarks in his Preface that he would have ignored hylozoism had he not been aware that a new version of it would shortly be published. Cudworth argued that the only real source of knowledge is the C … [Click Below for Full Description]
