Roger L'Estrange
Henry Brome, 1678. No Binding. Good. First edition. 94pp. Popish plot. Pamphlet. Error to page 3, which cites '1' instead of '3', as usual. The title changed in later editions to 'Tyranny and Popery Lording it Over the Consciences, Lives, Liberties, and Estates Both of King and People, under the mask of Presbytery'. "One of L'Estrange's most reprinted tracts, if one of the soberest. It ventures historically to the Elizabethan period and geographocally to Scotland to confirm Presbyterianism's usurpatory and mutinous disposition, given English expression n he 1640s and renewed in the present." - Roger L'Estrange and the Making of Restoration Culture Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704) was an author and press censor. "During the Popish Plot turmoil, he put himself forward in a series of pamphlets as the voice of reason and scepticism. Cautiously at first, and then with increasing boldness, he began to question the fabrications of Titus Oates and William Bedloe. His 'The History of the Plot', which appeared late in 1679, was not openly disbelieving but drew attention to inconsistencies and contradictions in the existing narratives. This line of attack was continued in 'The Free-Born Subject' (1679), 'A Further Discovery of the Plot', 'Discovery upon Discovery', and 'L'Estrange's Narrative of the Plot', and less formally in the two parts of his dialogue 'Cit and Bumpkin' (all 1680). - ODNB Condition: Disbound. Loss to the tops of pages 5-8, which have been repaired. Repairs to some of the gutters, including title page. Stab holes to the gutter. Occasional light spots. Some browning … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seutter Matthias ( 1678 - 1757 ) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757 ) Augsburg; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca 1720. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description : Map shows Piemont with Turin and parts of Ligurien and Savoyen and Provence; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matth?us Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Ruscelli Girolamo (1518 - 1566) Venice
Artist: Ruscelli Girolamo (d) ; date: (d)1678 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: One tear in the centerfold perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 41 x 56; - description: Map shows Svabia and Elsass; - vita of the artist: Girolamo Ruscelli (1518-1566) was an Italian polymath, humanist, editor, and cartographer active in Venice during the early 16th century. Ruscelli is best known for his important revision of Ptolemy's Geographia, which was published post humously in 1574. It is generally assumed that Alexius Pedemontanus was a pseudonym of Girolamo Ruscelli. In a later work, Ruscelli reported that the Secreti contained the experimental results of an ?Academy of Secrets? that he and a group of humanists and noblemen founded in Naples in the 1540s. Ruscelli?s academy is the first recorded example of an experimental scientific society. The academy was later imitated by Giambattista Della Porta, who founded an ?Accademia dei Secreti? in Naples in the 1560s.
