MONTFAUCON Bernard de
- Chez Pierre Granseigne, à Ville-Franche 1678, In 12 (8x14,3cm), (3) 40pp., relié. HOBBES, Thomas
1678. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The condition of man . . . is a condition of war of everyone against everyone" - Thomas Hobbes An extremely rare first edition of Thomas Hobbes' last work! Thomas Hobbes was perhaps the most notable 17th-century English philosopher who conducted social studies and published historical theories on politics, physics, and law. While works such as 'Leviathan' and 'De Cive' were his most popular books, works such as 'Decameron Physiologicum' proved to be his most important. According to Robertson, this work "was a new set of dialogues on physical questions in the fashion of the earlier ones... And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had marinated the long quarter of a century of strife." (Macdonald & Hargreaves) 'Ten Dialogues of Natural Philosophy', as it is more commonly known, includes dozens of impressive topics of study including a discussion on the age of the earth. In this section, Hobbes makes mention of Johannes Kepler, with whom he agreed on the age of the earth. His astronomical studies included planetary motion, physics, effects of heat and cold on the earth, physical systems of the world such as water and air, magnets, and much more. This incredible work features the folding plate at the beginning which is most often lacking from this work. [Attributes: First Edition]

Now First Done into English from the Latin Original Published at Frankfort in the Year 1678. Containing Twenty-two most celebrated Chemical Tracts (In Two Volumes) London: John M. Watkins, 1953. Two Volumes. Hardcovers. Large octavos. Limited to 250 hand-numbered sets, this being #206. Bound in black buckram with gilt titles to front panels and spines. In the original dust jackets. Both volumes with frontispiece facing pre-title page. Limitation page facing title page in volume 1. xii + 357, 322pp. Separate title pages for each tract (some with illustrations). Additionally illustrated with black and white figures. Very rare edition. A bit of loss to top edge and top back panel of dust jacket of Volume 1. A beautiful set of this uncommon edition. Near fine copies in very good dust jackets. The assemblage of the 22 tracts included here were designed to supply in a compact form a representative collection of the more brief and less ancient alchemical writers; in this respect, it may be regarded as a supplement to those large storehouses of Hermetic learning such as the Theatrum Chemicum, and that scarcely less colossal of Mangetus, the Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa, which are largely concerned with the cream of the archaic literature, with the works of Geber and the adepts of the school of Arabia, with the writings attributed to Hermes, with those of … [Click Below for Full Description]

IN CONTEMPORARY VELLUM BINDING, FIRST TITLE PAGE PARTIALLY CUT AS SEEN FINE COPY OF THE FIRST YIDDISH EDITION OF THE BIBLE THE FIRST TWO Yiddish translations of the complete Old Testament appeared almost simultaneously in Amsterdam in 1678 - 1679. Yiddish translations and glossaries of parts of the Hebrew Bible had occupied an important place in Yiddish publishing from its beginnings in the first half of the sixteenth century. The earlier texts only covered those sections of the Old Testament which are part of the liturgy: the Torah (Pentateuch), the haftarot (selected portions of the Prophets and the hagiographer which are read in synagogue after the weekly portions of the Torah), the five megillot ('Scrolls', i. e., Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther), and Psalms. Uri Fayvesh Halevi, the first publisher to start printing a complete Yiddish Old Testament, had been influenced by the example of Sephardi Jews and Christians because they possessed good translations. In Amsterdam, where contacts between Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardim and Christians were more extensive than elsewhere, he became aware of the fact that others had a better knowledge of 'their' Bible than they themselves had. The influence of the official Dutch Bible tra … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARINIS, Dominico de.
Rome, typis Iacobi Mascardi . sumptibus Ben Carrarae, 1678. 12mo, pp. [20], 143, [1, errata]; full-page woodcut of worm to *5v, woodcut initials and tailpieces; closed tear to title neatly repaired to verso without loss, some light damp staining (most noticeable at end) and very light browning; a very good copy in later vellum, edges sprinkled red.First edition of this scarce dissertation on worms focussing on the extraordinary case of a capuchin preacher from Pesaro who in 1677 passed an enormous worm in his urine, which upon subsequent examination was declared to be a serpent. The Dissertatio begins with a prefatory letter in Italian by Alessandro Cocci discussing the case of the capuchin friar Stefano da Cammerino who for 13 months had suffered from kidney pains and bloody and lumpy urine. Following treatment by Cocci and Cesare Cesareo, Cammerino passed, with excruciating pain, a long thin worm through his urinary meatus, initially trying to pull it out, only to break it in two, and then passing the remainder, to his subsequent great relief. The worm caused much local interest and Cocci describes how it was initially put on display to satisfy the curious, before being examined under a microscope. The conclusion of this examination was that the 'prodigio della natura' passed by Cammerino was in fact a serpent. As well as considering Cammerino's case, de Marinis examines polyps and worms more generally, discussing their generation, anatomy and size, and the parts of the human body affected by them and from which they are expelled.Krivatsy 7453; Wellcome IV, p. 55. Behn, Mrs. A. [Aphra]
London: Printed by E. Flesher for Richard Tonson, 1678. First Edition. Expertly bound in full red straight-grained morocco, gilt stamping to boards and spine, marbled end-papers, page edges stained yellow. Small quarto (pages 204 x 152 mm): [vi], 91, [i, epilogue], complete. Preliminary leaves A and A2 bound out of order. Minor foxing throughout, a few leaves with a small ink-blot (including the title), some leaves trimmed a bit close, just touching the header, a number of internal leaves with a small marginal slice professionally closed (no loss, no text affected). In all an excellent copy of a truly rare book with only two copies appearing at auction since the 1930s (one apparently defective). Released eight years into Behn's dramatic career, Sir Patient Fancy bears the marks of its author's success. Preceding her play with an epistle To the Reader and concluding it with an Epilogue, Behn acknowledges that she has created both a stage play and a lasting work of literature -- that her audience includes both the viewing audience and the reading public. As a contributor to the canon, she also claims the right to speak both under her own name and in her own voice to shape how her text is received. "I printed this play with all the impatient haste one ought to do, who would be vindicated from the most unjust and silly aspersion Woman could invent to cast on Woman; and which only my being a Woman has procured me; that it was Baudy, the least and most excusable fault in Men writers, to whose plays they all crowd." In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Behn, Mrs. A.
"I printed this play with all the impatient haste one ought to do, who would be vindicated from the most unjust and silly aspersion Woman could invent to cast on Woman; and which only my being a Woman has procured me; that it was Baudy, the least and most excusable fault in Men writers, to whose plays they all crowd." In her front matter, she positions herself as author and authorit … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAIMONIDES [MOSES BEN MAIMON]
Paris: Guidonem Caillou, 1678. This is an important portion of the magnum opus of Rabbi Moses ben Maimon's "Mishneh Torah" ("Review of the Torah"), one of the great Jewish legal texts, innovative at the time of its composition because of its new system of legal codification, and of enduring influence to the present day because of its scope and clarity. The text here, from the eighth book, concerns the divine service ("Avodah"), specifically the laws of the Temple in Jerusalem, discussing the persons who may enter the Temple, the utensils to be used in rituals there, the procedures for sacrifices and offerings, and the laws of the Yom Kippur service, the most holy observance in the Jewish calendar. Composed between 1170 and 1180, the "Mishneh Torah" establishes a codification of Jewish law into 14 books. It was the chief Medieval reference on Jewish observance, and it is still considered a major work in Judaism. A physician, philosopher, and rabbi, Maimonides (1135-1204) was the leading Jewish scholar of his day. He intended the present work to supplement the writings in the Torah with laws and observance handed down orally, the two works together thus providing a complete guide to Jewish law. The plates here show the plan and construction of the Temple. We could trace only one copy of this work sold at auction since 1984, and it was in extremely poor condition.. 228 x 170 mm. (9 x 6 5/8"). 8 p.l., 384 pp.Translated and edited by Ludovicus de Compiegne de Veil. Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral decoration, red morocco label, … [Click Below for Full Description]
