HOBBES, THOMAS. - [HOBBES' FINAL WORK]
London, Printed by J.C. for W. Crook, 1678. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary full calf binding with gilt spine. Hinges worn and capitals quite worn, with lack of ab. 1 cm of upper capital. Inner hinges cracked, so cords are showing, cords and stichings are very strong, so the binding is still very tight, and nothing is loose. Old, large, beatiful ex-libarry book-plate (South Library, 1860) pasted into inside of front board, weapon of same library beautifully blindstamped to top of title-page. A bit of overall minor brownspotting and soiling, but internally overall a nice and well preserved copy. (6), 136, (7, advertisements) pp. + 1 folded engraved plate. Pp. 133-136 consistes of "The Proportion of a Straight Line to half the Arc of a Quadrant" (which the engraved plate accompanies) and contains, three large engraved illustrations of lines and arcs. ¶ The very rare first edition of Hobbes' last work, which constitutes the final definition of his great mechanistic system of natural philosophy as well as the final blow in the famous Wallis-Hobbes feud. "Hobbes last work of all, published when he was over ninety, "was a new set of dialogues on physical questions, in the fashion of the earlier ones, but now with a stroke added at Wallis's doctrine of gravitation in the "De Motu". And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had maintained the long quarter of a century of strife."
- The "first edition is said to be extremely rare. The second edition, as is obvious from the pagination, has been much enlarged, and, in fact, rewritten, besides being arranged in two parts instead of three. Lenglet Dufresnoy is, therefore, quite correct when he says that it is necessary to have both editions. The author's anagram which appears in both editions, is explained in a note by the printer at the end of the second part of the second edition, p. 355. He says that it stands for Ioannes Baptista Marengus, a citizen of Genoa, a man distinguished in literature" (Ferguson). - Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig, die Vorsätze gebräunt. Einband leicht fleckig und bestoßen, Rücken mit kleinem Einriss, sonst gut erhalten. - Ferguson II, 75; Duveen 389; Neu 2652 [Attributes: First Edition]

GUILLEMEAU, Jacques (1544-1612).
Amsterdam: Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1678. Amsterdam:: Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1678., 1678. 145 x 91 mm. 12mo. [xxiv], 232 pp. Engraved frontis. (trimmed close at top of fore edge), title-page vignette, decorative initials. Contemporary full calf, raised bands, gilt spine, all edges red; leather scuffed and cracked, outer hinges starting, front free end-paper loose. Bookplate of Jerry F. Donin. VERY RARE. Good. VERY RARE DUTCH EDITION, THE FIRST TO BE AUGMENTED BY THE DUTCH SURGEON JOHANN VERBRUGGE, OF GUILLEMEAU'S CLASSIC WORK. Considered by Garrison to be the best of the Renaissance books on ophthalmology – an epitome of existing knowledge on the subject, chiefly from Greek and Arabian sources. Guillemeau "was the first to describe the repair of a congenital eyelid coloboma by freshening the edges and suturing their margins." Albert & Edwards, eds., p. 237. At the end of this work is an interesting treatise on teeth attributed to Guillemeau. Pierre Dionis (1643-1718), in his surgical treatise of 1707, stated that Guillemeau was the originator of a mineral paste for making artificial teeth. This "fact" is reiterated by Guerini in his History of dentistry (Philadelphia, 1909). Guerini wrote: "the Guillemeau of whom Dionis speaks is probably Jacques Guillemeau, the author of a book no longer to be found, which was translated from the French, first into Dutch and afterwards into German, Der Auffrichtiger Augen u. Zahnartz, published first in Dresden in 1706. . . " Dr. Weinberger, however, disputes this and suggests that the dental treatise was probably written by Johannes Verbr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oblong quarto (150 x 187 mm); two parts in one volume, part sevenwithengraved title-page and 89 engraved plates (of 100 - lacking plates 45-55) and part eight with 99 engraved plates (of 100 - lacking plate 51). Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title (a little soiled). [Nuremberg:] Paulus Furst Daniel Meissner (1585-1625) composed the Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, a famous collection of city plans and views depicting European, African and Asian towns. It was first published as Thesaurus Philo-Politicus. Das ist: Politisches Schatzkästlein guter Herren unnd bestendiger Freund in Frankfurt am Main by Eberhard Kieser in 1623. An expanded second edition was issued between 1624 and 1631, with this later edition published in 1678. The finely executed plans and views of the many cities, villages, castles and monasteries are a fascinating record of many European towns before the devastation wrought by the thirty Years' War. These two parts are focussed on Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Eastern Europe with African and Asian cities, including views of exotic towns such as Aden, Constantinople, Mombassa, Tunis, and Macau. Meissner brought an unusual twist to the book, introducing satirical comments to the plates, and providing an emblematic context. Praz pp. 417-420.

A Vennes (Vannes), Chez Jean Galles, 1678. Cudworth, Ralph
London: for Richard Royston, 1678-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Folio, 30 cm. Modern leather, leather spine label. Blindstamping to covers. Marbled page ends and end pages. 6 raised bands. [22], 889, [84] pp, engraved title-piece, title page in red and black. Foxing, scattered pencil marginalia. Lacking final leaf of ads. Sir Thomas Pope Blount, 1st Baronet's copy, his signature to front flyleaf. Refs: Wing C-7471; Brunet II 437 <br> A note on provenance: Thomas Blount (1649-1697) was a Member of Parliament and author who acquired a high reputation for the extent and variety of his learning. He, like his brother, the philosopher Charles Blount, was a noted deist. As a writer, he is most renowned for his "Censura celebriorum Authorum, sive Tractatus in quo varia" (1690). <br> Ralph Cudworth was a theologian and philosopher, a leading figure among the Cambridge Platonists along with Henry More. Their understanding of reason was as "the candle of the Lord": an echo of the divine within the human soul and an imprint of God within man. They believed that reason could judge the private revelations of the Puritan narrative. To the Cambridge Platonists, religion and reason were in harmony. Reality was not known by physical sensation alone, but by intuition of the intelligible forms that exist behind the material world of everyday perception. <br> The present work is primarily a critique of what Cudworth took to be the two principal forms of atheism: materialism and hylozoism (that all that matters is life). Cudworth's criticism was directed at Thomas H … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lee, Nathaniel
Printed by R.E. for James Magnes and Rich. Bentley, London 1678 - FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [x], 177, [1]. Modern blue paper boards, printed paper label to spine. Corner of one leaf torn away affecting two words, top edge cropped touching running headlines, soiled, some light stains. Reprinted twice in the following decades, this is the first appearance of this historical tragedy by Nathaniel Lee (d. 1692), one of a string of successful tragedies he produced beginning in 1677 with The Rival Queens. A growing friendship with Dryden at the time of publication led to them collaborating on Lee&apos;s next play, and Dryden contributes a verse epilogue to this one. Lee fell from popularity in the next decade, but it is still &apos;possible to recognize Lee&apos;s distinctive style and major role in the development of English drama. In at least two respects, he led the other playwrights of his day: he anticipated Dryden in restoring blank verse to its favoured status in serious drama, and he started the transition from admirable heroes and happy endings, typical of serious plays of the 1660s, to the more pathetic, vulnerable characters and suicidal or homicidal conclusions that marked so many tragedies during the following two decades&apos; (ODNB). Hobbes Thomas
J.C. for W. Crook, 1678. The First Edition of Hobbes' final work. With the folding plate, which is frequently lacking and a figure within the text. 8vo, in full calf of proper period style, the binding with raised bands ruled in blind and a black morocco label lettered and with decorate ruled frame in gilt viii, 136, (7) (1) pp. A very fine and handsome copy, complete with the license leaf, folding plate and all ads, rarely found such. The text very clean and fresh. VERY RARE AND HOBBES' FINAL WORK, PRODUCED AT AGE 90. Hobbes considered himself to be primarily a scientist and philosopher and only consequently a theorist of civil and ecclesiastical authority. His reputation, however, both in his own day and ours, is inextricably linked to his progressive theories in civil and church polity, despite more practical accomplishments in optical theory. DECAMERON PHYSIOLOGICUM was the final form of his mechanistic system of natural philosophy and the final word in the Wallis-Hobbes feud. "Hobbes last work of all was a new set of dialogues on physical questions, in the fashion of the earlier ones, but now with a stroke added at Wallis's doctrine of gravitation in the "De Motu". And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had maintained the long quarter of a century of strife." (C.G. Robertson)" On Page 116 Hobbes references Kepler, with whom he is in agreement, in a statement giving the age of the Earth. There are discussions on magnetism, vacuum, motions … [Click Below for Full Description]
