Mersius, Johannes (d. i. J. van Meurs) zugeschrieben / Chorier, Nicolas (hier anonym, der eigentliche Autor)
Ohne Verlag, Amsterdam (Amstelodami) [wohl eigentlich: Genf], 1678. Titelblatt, 18 Blatt, 324 S., Zwischentitel, 161 S., 1 Blatt. [Click Below for Full Description]

Regner de Graaf (1641-73), of Schoonhaven, Holland, was the first to study the pancreas and its secretions before the time of Claude Bernard. In his disputation on the nature and use of the pancreatic juice (1664) he describes his method of collecting the secretion by means of a temporary pancreatic fistula, noting the small quantity of the juice secreted and its acid character. [...] De Graaf also employed an artificial biliary fistula to collect the bile, in which he was preceded, however, by Malpighi. MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea Gregorio
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Pietro Mattioli was an important 16th-century Tuscan physician whose medical and botanical treatises were reliable and accurate for centuries after first published. Perhaps his most famous treatise, 'Kreutterbuch,' is one of the most important illustrated herbal and horticultural books to ever be published. According to 'Heirs of Hippocrates,' "In this commentary on Dioscorides, Mattioli prepared what many authorities now regard as the encyclopedia of Renaissance pharmacology. He studied hundreds of plants, examined and described them fully, added many new species, and provided excellent illustrations which were far superior to those of any previous work in the field." (HoH 141) This 1678 Basel edition was the first edition edited by Dr. Bernhardus Verzascha, a famous physician from Basel. Even though the title page still features the names Mattioli and Camerarius, it features additions of medicinal nature by Verzascha with new illustrations not in previous editions. (Schmid). All in all, there are over 1000 individual plants depicted in the incredible woodcut engravings. This edition would form the basis for Theodorus Zwinger's herbal. [Attributes: First Edition]

Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757 ) Augsburg; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca 1728. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description : Map shows Lombardia with Milano and Liguria with Genua; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matth?us Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

- Chez Estienne Michallet, à Paris 1678, In 12 (10x15,5cm), (8) 456pp., relié. - Prima edizione, molto rara, a lungo attribuito a Madame de La Fayette, pubblicato l'anno di La principessa di Cleves, poi Courtilz de Sandras e anche Pierre Daniel Huet. Marocco completa fine del XIX firmato Bellevallée rosso lucido vecchio. Torna ai nervi giansenista. Ampio fregio interno dorato. MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea Gregorio
1678 Mattioli HERBAL Botany Medicine Verzascha Pharmacology Woodcut Illustrated Pietro Mattioli was an important 16th-century Tuscan physician whose medical and botanical treatises were reliable and accurate for centuries after first published. Perhaps his most famous treatise, ‘Kreutterbuch,’ is one of the most important illustrated herbal and horticultural books to ever be published. According to ‘Heirs of Hippocrates,’ “In this commentary on Dioscorides, Mattioli prepared what many authorities now regard as the encyclopedia of Renaissance pharmacology. He studied hundreds of plants, examined and described them fully, added many new species, and provided excellent illustrations which were far superior to those of any previous work in the field.” (HoH 141) This 1678 Basel edition was the first edition edited by Dr. This edition would form the basis for Theodorus Zwinger’s herbal. Item number: #2861 Price: $3500 MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea Gregorio Neu Vollkommenes Krauter-Buch, Von allerhand Gewachsen der Baumen, Stauden und Krautern, die in Teutschland, Italien, Frankreich, und in andern Orten der Welt herfür kommen : in welchem ohnzahlbare treffliche Artzneyen wider alle Kranckheiten, so wol der Menschen Alsdess Viehs, neben ihrem ord … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willughby, Francis; Ray, John.
1678. Folio. 306pp + 5 (index) + 77 engraved plates, illustrating hundreds of figures of birds, fowling, falconry, etc. Title-page printed in red and black, 2 letterpress tables, 2 text diagrams. Title in red and black, within double ruled border. Period style half calf and marble boards. Gilt title on original red label on spine with 6 raised bands. 1st edition in Latin, followed later by the English edition in 1678. "One of the most important treatises on ornithology of all times" (McGill/Wood). Willughby's Ornithology was the first successful systematic classification of the birds of the world. Willughby's work organized and edited after his death by John Ray was revolutionary compared to the earlier efforts of his contemporaries Christopher Merrett and Walter Charleton. He preserved the broad division of land and water birds, but rather than subdividing functionally, on the grounds of diet, singing ability, and other behavioral traits, he introduced a system based on anatomy, using for criteria foot structure, beak form, and body size.
