Behn, Mrs. A. [Aphra]
London: Printed by E. Flesher for Richard Tonson, 1678. First Edition. Expertly bound in full red straight-grained morocco, gilt stamping to boards and spine, marbled end-papers, page edges stained yellow. Small quarto (pages 204 x 152 mm): [vi], 91, [i, epilogue], complete. Preliminary leaves A and A2 bound out of order. Minor foxing throughout, a few leaves with a small ink-blot (including the title), some leaves trimmed a bit close, just touching the header, a number of internal leaves with a small marginal slice professionally closed (no loss, no text affected). In all an excellent copy of a truly rare book with only two copies appearing at auction since the 1930s (one apparently defective). Released eight years into Behn's dramatic career, Sir Patient Fancy bears the marks of its author's success. Preceding her play with an epistle To the Reader and concluding it with an Epilogue, Behn acknowledges that she has created both a stage play and a lasting work of literature -- that her audience includes both the viewing audience and the reading public. As a contributor to the canon, she also claims the right to speak both under her own name and in her own voice to shape how her text is received. "I printed this play with all the impatient haste one ought to do, who would be vindicated from the most unjust and silly aspersion Woman could invent to cast on Woman; and which only my being a Woman has procured me; that it was Baudy, the least and most excusable fault in Men writers, to whose plays they all crowd." In her front matter, she positions herself as author and authorit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Many of these maps can be found in museum collections; rarely, copies are available for private sale. Some copies are held in the National Maritime Museum; many of his maps are now in the possession of Trinity College Dublin. Having worked and collaborated with Charles Price, Senex created a series of engravings for the London Almanacs and in 1714 he published together with Maxwell an English Atlas. In 1719 he published a miniature edition of Brittania by Ogilby. He became particularly interested in depicting California as an island instead of part of mainland North America, a trait which makes many of his maps appealing to collectors. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. MAIMONIDES [MOSES BEN MAIMON]
Paris: Guidonem Caillou, 1678. This is an important portion of the magnum opus of Rabbi Moses ben Maimon's "Mishneh Torah" ("Review of the Torah"), one of the great Jewish legal texts, innovative at the time of its composition because of its new system of legal codification, and of enduring influence to the present day because of its scope and clarity. The text here, from the eighth book, concerns the divine service ("Avodah"), specifically the laws of the Temple in Jerusalem, discussing the persons who may enter the Temple, the utensils to be used in rituals there, the procedures for sacrifices and offerings, and the laws of the Yom Kippur service, the most holy observance in the Jewish calendar. Composed between 1170 and 1180, the "Mishneh Torah" establishes a codification of Jewish law into 14 books. It was the chief Medieval reference on Jewish observance, and it is still considered a major work in Judaism. A physician, philosopher, and rabbi, Maimonides (1135-1204) was the leading Jewish scholar of his day. He intended the present work to supplement the writings in the Torah with laws and observance handed down orally, the two works together thus providing a complete guide to Jewish law. The plates here show the plan and construction of the Temple. We could trace only one copy of this work sold at auction since 1984, and it was in extremely poor condition.. 228 x 170 mm. (9 x 6 5/8"). 8 p.l., 384 pp.Translated and edited by Ludovicus de Compiegne de Veil. PROVENANCE: Inscribed (at rear), "R. Redding è Castro Windsor preb: . . . " Very good. Scarce. Third edition. Barrow was an English mathematician remembered for discovering the fundamental theorem of calculus. He was the first Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. "The elementary portion of Euclid's Elements was part of Barrow's college syllabus, but some time before 1652 he went on to read not only Euclidean commentaries by Tacquet, Héigone, and Oughtred, but also more advanced Greek works by Archimedes and possibly Apollonius and Ptolemy. His first published work, his epitomized Euclidis Elementorum libri XV (probably written by early 1654), is designed as a quadrivium undergraduate text, with emphasis on its deductive structure rather than on its geometrical content, its sole concessions to contemporary mathematical idiom being its systematic use of Oughtred's symbolism and a list'ex P. Herigono' of numerical constants relating to inscribed polyhedra." :: DSB I, p. 474. REFERENCES: Max Steck, Bibliographia Euclideana, IV, 67; Wing (2nd ed., 1994), E3395.

Oratio", Roma, Tizzoni, 1676 (pp. 34). Modern paper. Stefano Gradi (1613-1683), or Gradic, was a croatian scientist and philosopher. He was early sent to Rome, from Dubrovnik, where he became a priest: in 1661 he was appointed as principal of the Vatican Library. The publication of this "Disputatio" pulled him to be suspected of Jansenism. Bound with "Oratio de eligendo Summo Pont. Sede vacante post obitum Alexandri VII...", Roma, Tinassi, 1667 (pp. 12) and with "In funere Caesaris Rasponi... Oratio", Roma, Tizzoni, 1676 (pp. 34).

London, Printed by J.C. for W. Crook, 1678. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary full calf binding with gilt spine. Hinges worn and capitals quite worn, with lack of ab. 1 cm of upper capital. Inner hinges cracked, so cords are showing, cords and stichings are very strong, so the binding is still very tight, and nothing is loose. Zweite Ausgabe, gegenüber der Ausgabe von 1674 mit nahezu verdreifachtem Umfang. - The "first edition is said to be extremely rare. The second edition, as is obvious from the pagination, has been much enlarged, and, in fact, rewritten, besides being arranged in two parts instead of three. Lenglet Dufresnoy is, therefore, quite correct when he says that it is necessary to have both editions. GUILLEMEAU, Jacques (1544-1612).
Amsterdam: Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1678. Amsterdam:: Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1678., 1678. 145 x 91 mm. 12mo. [xxiv], 232 pp. Engraved frontis. (trimmed close at top of fore edge), title-page vignette, decorative initials. Contemporary full calf, raised bands, gilt spine, all edges red; leather scuffed and cracked, outer hinges starting, front free end-paper loose. Bookplate of Jerry F. Donin. VERY RARE. Good. VERY RARE DUTCH EDITION, THE FIRST TO BE AUGMENTED BY THE DUTCH SURGEON JOHANN VERBRUGGE, OF GUILLEMEAU'S CLASSIC WORK. Considered by Garrison to be the best of the Renaissance books on ophthalmology -- an epitome of existing knowledge on the subject, chiefly from Greek and Arabian sources. Guillemeau "was the first to describe the repair of a congenital eyelid coloboma by freshening the edges and suturing their margins." Albert & Edwards, eds., p. 237. At the end of this work is an interesting treatise on teeth attributed to Guillemeau. Pierre Dionis (1643-1718), in his surgical treatise of 1707, stated that Guillemeau was the originator of a mineral paste for making artificial teeth. This "fact" is reiterated by Guerini in his History of dentistry (Philadelphia, 1909). Guerini wrote: "the Guillemeau of whom Dionis speaks is probably Jacques Guillemeau, the author of a book no longer to be found, which was translated from the French, first into Dutch and afterwards into German, Der Auffrichtiger Augen u. Zahnartz, published first in Dresden in 1706. . . " Dr. Weinberger, however, disputes this and suggests that the dental treatise was probably written by Johannes Verbru … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kilian after T. van Thulden, most with engraved verse captions in German, most platemarks 193/198 x 240/250 mm., plates 7 and 20 smaller, plates 8 and 24 larger with fore-edge folded. Title-leaf foxed and with large repaired tear, marginal dampstaining to first and last few leaves, occasional light marginal foxing. Later boards covered in 18th-century Dutch-gilt paper with birds and blossoms (spine abraded, paper of front cover and part of lower cover faded). Unidentified 19th-century ms. shelfmark on title.*** Only Edition of the first German version of an engraved picture-book of the Odyssey, reproducing the fresco suite of the Galerie d'Ulysse of Fontainebleau, painted in the mid-sixteenth century by Nicolò dell'Abate after Primaticcio, and later destroyed. These mannerist frescoes made the rounds of Europe via several print series, including the present very rare edition, apparently the earliest in the German-speaking lands. The 60 frescoes, considered Primaticcio's "crowning achievement," were painted by Nicolo dell'Abate after Primaticcio's designs and under his direction, from about 1541 to 1600. "Tragically, the entire gallery was destroyed in 1739 after years of neglect and decay. Preparatory drawings by Primaticcio, along with drawings and engravings [such as these] provide a good indication of the decorations' original appearance" (Fiorenza, 799-800).
