Homann, Nuremberg - In this decorative plan of Amsterdam, Seutter surrounds an aerial view of the city with a wealth of views and images. The plan at the center has streets and medieval walls clearly marked, such that the city looks like a many-pointed star with a windmill at each point. An enormous number of ships are huddled in the city's harbor, demonstrating its status as an economic world power. This scene is replicated in the panoramic view at the bottom off the map, which shows the city's waterfront and the ships of all sizes doing business there. The view is crowned with a decorative cartouche which features the city's arms surrounded by canons and other weapons that symbolize its military power. To the left are Poseidon and Hermes, who represent the city's strengths. To the right, Asian, African and American Indian figures offer their wares at the feet of the city's arms. Over 300 place names are labeled on the map and view in accordance with keys in the upper corners. Between the keys are the title, emblazoned on a scroll, and two coats of arms. As was customary for Seutter's maps and other Dutch maps of the mid-1800s, the plan has been colored and the cartouche and view left uncolored. This contemporary coloring has been left untouched, adding to the map's authenticity. It is in excellent condition with full margins and no staining. Small bookplate pasted onto verso. Matthaus Seutter the Elder (1678-1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher based in Augsburg. He apprenticed with J.B. Homann in Nuremberg and, in fact, this map was likely modeled on Homann's 1725 precedent. Seutter was awarded the title of Imperial Geographer by Karl VI in 1731, and his son-in-law T.C. Lotter took over the business in 1758. This map of Amsterdam exemplifies Seutter's cartographic prowess. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 19.5" x 22.75".

All for Love: or, the World Well Lost. A Tragedy, as is acted at the Theatre-Royal; and written in Imitation of Shakespeare's Stile

(London): Henry Herringman, 1678. Octavo. (x), 78, (i)pp. First edition. The last play that Dryden wrote for the King’s Company, All for Love is an imitation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. It was written in blank verse and focuses on the tragic last hours of the two star-crossed lovers’ lives. With a calligraphed bookplate on the first free endpaper stating that the book was presented to the author Louis Auchincloss in 1935 as the English Essay Prize at Groton School. A prolific writer who balanced both literary and legal careers for most of his life, Auchincloss wrote numerous essays and at least a book each year while working as a lawyer. Bound in brown cloth, gilt-titled on the spine, and with the Groton School seal in gilt on the front cover. Corners slightly rubbed, and a tear to the margin of one page that minimally affects the text has been skillfully repaired, else a very good association copy of Dryden’s best-known play.

Excellent and scarce Autograph Manuscript Signed, 4 pages 4to, n.p., Sept. 1877

Very Good. This is the complete fair copy of his 12-stanza poem, "In the Old South Church". It begins, "She came and stood in the Old South Church a wonder and a sign, With a look the old time sibyls wore, half-crazed and half divine." In conclusion the final stanza is, "So long as Boston shall Boston be, and her bay-tides rise and fall, Shall freedom stand in the Old South Church And plead for the rights of all!" It is signed and dated, "John G. Whittier". This Church was founded in 1678, and is still in operation. Between 1872 and 1875 it was rebuilt on Boylston St. This poem was used as a dedication some 22 years later. It is boldly penned On four vellum pages. This first page is soiled but readable while the remainder is bold and beautiful. Quite scarce and interesting.

NOUVELLES DE L'AMERIQUE, OU LE MERCURE AMERIQUAIN. OU SONT CONTENÜES TROIS HISTORIES VERITABLES ARRIVÉES DE NOSTRE TEMPS

Cologne [actually Amsterdam]: Jean L'Ingenu [i.e. Holland], 1678.. 248pp. [bound with:] de la Roche-Guilhen, Anne: ALMANZAIDE NOUVELLE.... Paris: Claude Barbin [i.e. Holland], 1676. 96pp. 12mo. Contemporary plain paper boards, spine renewed to style. Light wear to extremities. Very good. Evidently the first edition of this scarce work, offering three fictional tales on the theme of buccaneering and piracy in the Americas: "Histoire de Don Diego da Rivera," "Histoire de Mont-Val," and "Le destin de l'homme, ou les aventures de Don Bartelimi de la Cueba, Portugais." Significantly, these fictional tales of piracy appear in the same year and place as the greatest classic on Caribbean pirates, Alexander Esquemeling's DE AMERICAENSCHE ZEE-ROOVERS, translated into English in 1684 as THE BUCANIERS OF AMERICA. The tales here are drawn from Esquemeling and illustrate the endless appeal of piracy tales. Bound afterwards is an early edition (1676) of the novel, ALMANZAIDE..., first printed in 1674. Set in Morocco, this was the first of approximately twenty popular romances produced by the female novelist, Anne de la Roche- Guilhen (1644-1710). Another edition was printed in 1678 at Rouen. Perhaps the earliest pirate fiction, drawn from the first edition of the greatest classic in the genre. SABIN 56094.

The Ornithology In Three Books. Wherein all the Birds Hitherto known being reduced into a Method suitable to their natures are accurately Described

LONDON : A[ndrew]. C[lark]. for John Martyn, 1678 A fine copy in a high quality full leather binding. With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dodo) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. The illustrations were commissioned from a number of sources and some birds are depicted twice where the initial image was not very good. This copy lacks the original endpapers - perhaps lost during the later rebinding - but is complete including the additional falconry material. There is some browning to page edges. Some of the plates have some fraying at the very edges where the paper is more fragile. This is most marked in plates LXXVI and LXXVIII - which also has a slight crease.

        Linguae Latinae Liber Dictionarius Quadripartitus

1678. LITTLETON, Adam. Linguae Latinae Liber Dictionarius Quadripartitus. A Latine Dictionary, in Four Parts. I. An English-Latine. II. A Latine- Classical. III. A Latine-Proper. IV. A Latine-Barbarous. London, T. Basset, J. Wright, and R. Chiswell, [1677 and] 1678. Folio. Unpaginated. Second edition (the first was 1673) much enlarged. The English-Latin portion is as much thesaurus as dictionary. The "Latine-Classical" is a Latin-English dictionary with etymology, including Hebrew; the "Latine- Proper" is a dictionary of personal and place names; the "Latine- Barbarous" (dated 1677) contains erroneous and foreign words. A legal dictionary and tables of weights, measures, coinage, chronology etc. crown the work. In 1670 Littleton was made chaplain to Charles II. His dedication to the King explains that he has rejected much of former dictionaries which would not be of use to students. His dictionary remained in print until 1735. An engraved frontispiece (rebacked) shows the Palatine Library established by Augustus. The engraved map of Ancient Italy, and the engraved plan of Rome showing all its monuments and buildings, are both present. In an unsophisticated calf binding of the period, with plain boards, and spine in six compartments with elaborate floral tooling. Hinges cracked externally. Bookplate of Watkin Williams of Penbedw, Denbigh, probably the Welsh schoolmaster-poet who won the Eisteddfod at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 with a poem in Welsh on George Washington. (Cordell 220. BL 612.1.13.).

DECAMERON PHYSIOLOGICUM: Or, Ten Dialogues of Natural Philosophy

London: J.C. for W. Crook, 1678. The First Edition of Hobbes’ final work. With the folding plate, which is frequently lacking and a figure within the text. 8vo, in full calf of proper period style, the binding with raised bands ruled in blind and a black morocco label lettered and with decorate ruled frame in gilt viii, 136, (7) (1) pp. A very fine and handsome copy, complete with the license leaf, folding plate and all ads, rarely found such. The text very clean and fresh. VERY RARE AND HOBBES’ FINAL WORK, PRODUCED AT AGE 90. Hobbes considered himself to be primarily a scientist and philosopher and only consequently a theorist of civil and ecclesiastical authority. His reputation, however, both in his own day and ours, is inextricably linked to his progressive theories in civil and church polity, despite more practical accomplishments in optical theory. DECAMERON PHYSIOLOGICUM was the final form of his mechanistic system of natural philosophy and the final word in the Wallis-Hobbes feud. "Hobbes last work of all was a new set of dialogues on physical questions, in the fashion of the earlier ones, but now with a stroke added at Wallis's doctrine of gravitation in the "De Motu". And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had maintained the long quarter of a century of strife." (C.G. Robertson)" On Page 116 Hobbes references Kepler, with whom he is in agreement, in a statement giving the age of the Earth. There are discussions on magnetism, vacuum, motions of air and water, gravity, optics and more.

Traitte des Ceremonies Superstitieuses des Juifs tant Anciens que Modernes.

Amsterdam : Chez Jacob Smith. 1678 . First Edition in French 12mo, 1 leaf, *10+1, **4, A-Z12, Aa12, Bb8, 16 ff, 531, [31], 30 pp, a false title-page inserted before that given above, old red morocco, gilt, a little worn but still sound. This is the first French translation of Spinoza's important and very controversial book "Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. [Amsterdam] 1670" in which he supports Jan de Witt's principles of tolerance and free speech. He elaborates a social-contract theory of the state and argues that a democratic society must ensure the freedom and opportunity for happiness of the individual. The anti-theocratic flavour of his argument angered the Dutch clerics but what truly outraged them, and made this book a dangerous possession, was the way that it demythologized the Holy Writ. It is for this reason that the work was 'camouflaged' with a misleading title-page. A Cologne: Chez Claude Emanuel. 1678". Some copies have another version of the title which reads "La Clef du sanctuaire par un scavant homme de notre siecle. Leiden 1678" See PMM 153 for the latin edition.

A relatively early edition (1st ed.: 1595) of one of the rarest and most important of the Probierbüchlein; written not later than 1567, it is in this work that we find the first suggestion that tin and lead, upon heating during calcination, gain weight. This discovery was later noted and described by Jean Rey in his famously rare book of 1630 and, of course, by Lavoisier in 1772 who first correctly recognized that calcination involves combination with air. Lavoisier's conclusions marked the end of the phlogiston theory and the inauguration of a true revolution in chemistry. "Of more interest [than the earlier Probierbüchlein] is a work by Modestin Fachs, master of the mint of the Prince of Anhalt, written not later than 1567...The preface by Modestin Fachs is dated 1567 and the book was published by his son Louis Wolfgang Fachs. In this is a passage to which Jean Rey drew attention saying that in the process of cupellation the total weight of the vessel, cupel, metal, and lead increases."-Partington, II, p. 67. The second part, with separate pagination, is the Rathsames Bedencken und Erklärung Auff etlicher Rathen und Angeben, dass die Müntz-Herrn geringere Müntzen sollen schlagen lassen. This is a significant contribution to the history of monetary systems, as it describes processes for analyzing coins made of gold, silver, and various alloys. Part III, also separately paginated, is the Kurtzer Anhang, zu vorigem Probier-Büchlein. I believe this is the first appearance of this notable text in any of the editions. The plate depicts an oven used for metallurgical processes. A very good copy of an extremely rare and important book. Darmstaedter cites other editions of 1622, 1636, 1669, 1671, and 1689 (all of which are rare). Hoover, translation of De Re Metallica, p. 613. See D. McKie's edition of The Essays of Jean Rey (1951), pp. xxviii-xxix. Neville, I, p. 437. No edition in the Hoover collection. .

'Primiere édition [1614] de cette curieuse relation; elle est rare. Celle de Lisb. Craesbeeck, 1678, est un peu moins chère.' [EN] Mendez Pinto (1509-1583) was a Portuguese adventurer, a soldier, sailor, merchant, doctor, missionary and ambassador. He embarked to India in 1537 in a fleet commanded by the son of Vasco da Gama and traveled for 21 years, fought and traded in China, Tartary, Pegu and the neighboring countries, sailing in every sea. Mendes Pinto went to the mouth of the Mekong River and was in Japan before the arrival of St. Francis Xavier. He became later his friend and traveling companion. He traveled extensively in Asia between 1537 and 1557.In 1542 helanded in Japan and gained the favor of a feudal lord, to whom they claim to have given the first firearm to have entered Japan, the Portuguese "arquebus". This is the source of Pinto's claim to be the first westerner to enter Japan. The weapon was rapidly reproduced and had a major impact on the ongoing Japanese civil wars. He is credited for the opening up of Indo-China trade. He joined the Society of Jesus and St. Francis gave him the money with which to build the first Jesuit establishment in Japan. Mendez accompanied the Jesuits as ambassador from the Portuguese Viceroy of India to the King of Bungo. While a number of the details of his work are obviously taken from other accounts, such as the visits to Ethiopia and Tibet, the total picture given of Asia in the first half of the 16th century has undoubted authenticity. This is one of the greatest books by a European traveler in the East and is a classic of Portuguese literature. Location/localizacao: raros

Encadernação da época em pergaminho flexível. Inocêncio I, 49. "P.

1678 - An important chronic on the Jesuit Missions all over the World. 1678 – 1701. Viena. Leopold Voigt. Two volumes in folio (292 mm x 195 mm; 327 mm x 223 mm). [10] + 1-666 + [16] pp. + 2 plates (1 folded); frontispiece + [14] + 1-606 + [28] pp.; [14] + 1-220 + [2] + 1-159 + [22] pp.; frontispiece + [12] + 1-304 + [8] + 5-284 + [24] pp. Contemporary non-uniform blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, raised bands to spine, lettered in ink; some minor rubbing, clasps lacking (condition is uniform, possibly a made-up set from the beginning). Occasional light staining and a few leaves with small repairs (loss of some words on one repair; larger repair to pictorial frontispiece to Vol. III), engravings in very fine condition and in strong impressions. The first edition, Kerkelijke Historie van de geeheele Wereldt, came out in Antwerp between 1667 and 1671, and was subsequently translated into German and added to by other Jesuit historians. The work contains information on the Jesuit missions around the World, mainly focused on America and Asia –deals in remarkable length the missions of Brazil and Paraguay. It is handsomely illustrated with numerous half-page engravings in strong impressions. “Pages 311 to 457 are occupied with the Jesuit Missions among the Indians of Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Florida, Canada, Paraguay, and Maragnan [Island of St. Louis, a French colony off the coast of Brazil]. This portion of the work is illustrated with eighteen full-page copper-plate engravings, of which seven are portraits of Indians of each of the named countries, and eleven represent the martyrdom of the missionaries by the natives. These plates are beautifully drawn and engraved, and exhibit, with the most vivid and painful fidelity, the various forms of torture and massacre endured by the missionaries and their converts. The account of the missions in Florida and Canada fills thirty-four pages. One of the pages in this part of the work represents the martyrdom of Father Jogues and two French associates by the Mohawks; another exhibits the tortures by which Fathers Brebœuf and Lallemant were killed in Canada; and a third the murder of Fathers Daniel and Garnier by the Indians of the same country” (Field, 673). Hazart (1617-1690) was a Dutch Jesuit, author, historian and orator. His life was almost exclusively devoted to the struggle against the Calvinists of the Low Countries, but his real forte was writing. This universal church history is considered his greatest work; it deals with the Jesuit missions and missionaries in Asia, Africa, America and Europe. Among the fine engravings is a complex allegorical image, which visually suggests the goal of the Jesuit missions to expand throughout the world. In this engraving, a Mohul, an American Indian, and a Chinese are before a personified Church wearing the papal tiara and putti bearing a shield with the IHS motif. “Hazart divided his work into regional histories: Japanese, Chinese, Mughal, Vijayanagara, Abyssinian, African, Peruvian, Paraguayan, Brazilian, Floridian, Canadian, Mexican.” (Luke Clossey, Salvation and Globalization in the Early Jesuit Missions, 2008, p. 216).         POEMS by the most deservedly admired MRS KATHERINE PHILIPS, the matchless ORINDA. To which is added Monsieur Corneilles POMPEY & HORACE tragedies, with several other translations out of French

London, Printed by T. N for Henry Herringman, 1678.. Third authorised folio edition, 1678. 4to, 290 x 180 mm, 11½ x 7 inches, frontispiece portrait engraved by William Faithorne, pages (34), 198; (8), 124, separate dated title pages for the 2 plays which follow the poems, bound in contemporary full calf, blind ruled border with small ornament at corners, raised bands with gilt decoration in compartments, gilt lettered morocco label to spine, edges marbled. Light pitting to surface of covers, spine rubbed, small repair at head of spine, very small chip to head of upper hinge and tiny chip to tail of spine, tiny crack at head and tail of lower hinge, armorial bookplate to front pastedown, fore-edge margin of frontispiece trimmed, 2 very small closed margin tears, neatly repaired, another closed tear due to a paper flaw runs from the top edge to the first line of text, neatly repaired with no loss of text, contents clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce book. Katherine Philips (1632-1664) the noted female poet, is remembered chiefly today for her accounts in her poems of her friendships with women. Her version of Corneille's tragedy La Mort de Pompee was first published in her lifetime in 1663. This was followed by an unauthorised 8vo edition of her poems shortly before her premature death from smallpox in 1664. This was withdrawn a few days after it appeared as having been inaccurately printed. The authorised (in folio) edition was prepared for publication by Katherine's friend Sir Charles Cotterell, Charles II's Master of Ceremonies and included the tragedy Pompey and the previously unpublished Horace. This was first published in 1667 and was obviously popular as reprints appeared in 1669, 1678, and 1710, remarkable for a dead female poet of that period. The translations of French poems and one Italian poem run from page 170 to 198, pagination restarts for the Corneille tragedies. The bookplate bears the name Hans Sloane Esqr. most likely that of the great nephew of Sir Hans Sloane the famous natural history collector whose bequest of books and artifacts formed the foundation of the British Museum.
