1678 - An important chronic on the Jesuit Missions all over the World. 1678 – 1701. Viena. Leopold Voigt. Two volumes in folio (292 mm x 195 mm; 327 mm x 223 mm). [10] + 1-666 + [16] pp. + 2 plates (1 folded); frontispiece + [14] + 1-606 + [28] pp.; [14] + 1-220 + [2] + 1-159 + [22] pp.; frontispiece + [12] + 1-304 + [8] + 5-284 + [24] pp. Contemporary non-uniform blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, raised bands to spine, lettered in ink; some minor rubbing, clasps lacking (condition is uniform, possibly a made-up set from the beginning). Occasional light staining and a few leaves with small repairs (loss of some words on one repair; larger repair to pictorial frontispiece to Vol. III), engravings in very fine condition and in strong impressions. The first edition, Kerkelijke Historie van de geeheele Wereldt, came out in Antwerp between 1667 and 1671, and was subsequently translated into German and added to by other Jesuit historians. The work contains information on the Jesuit missions around the World, mainly focused on America and Asia –deals in remarkable length the missions of Brazil and Paraguay. It is handsomely illustrated with numerous half-page engravings in strong impressions. “Pages 311 to 457 are occupied with the Jesuit Missions among the Indians of Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Florida, Canada, Paraguay, and Maragnan [Island of St. Louis, a French colony off the coast of Brazil]. This portion of the work is illustrated with eighteen full-page copper-plate engravings, of which seven are portraits of Indians of each of the named countries, and eleven represent the martyrdom of the missionaries by the natives. These plates are beautifully drawn and engraved, and exhibit, with the most vivid and painful fidelity, the various forms of torture and massacre endured by the missionaries and their converts. The account of the missions in Florida and Canada fills thirty-four pages. One of the pages in this part of the work represents the martyrdom of Father Jogues and two French associates by the Mohawks; another exhibits the tortures by which Fathers Brebœuf and Lallemant were killed in Canada; and a third the murder of Fathers Daniel and Garnier by the Indians of the same country” (Field, 673). Hazart (1617-1690) was a Dutch Jesuit, author, historian and orator. His life was almost exclusively devoted to the struggle against the Calvinists of the Low Countries, but his real forte was writing. This universal church history is considered his greatest work; it deals with the Jesuit missions and missionaries in Asia, Africa, America and Europe. Among the fine engravings is a complex allegorical image, which visually suggests the goal of the Jesuit missions to expand throughout the world. In this engraving, a Mohul, an American Indian, and a Chinese are before a personified Church wearing the papal tiara and putti bearing a shield with the IHS motif. “Hazart divided his work into regional histories: Japanese, Chinese, Mughal, Vijayanagara, Abyssinian, African, Peruvian, Paraguayan, Brazilian, Floridian, Canadian, Mexican.” (Luke Clossey, Salvation and Globalization in the Early Jesuit Missions, 2008, p. 216). JCB II (1675-1700), p. 234. Cordier, Japonica 379. Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana (1878), 277. Sabin 31114. Sommervogel, Bibliotheque de la Compagnie de Jesus, VII:1407. Streit, I:163.         POEMS by the most deservedly admired MRS KATHERINE PHILIPS, the matchless ORINDA. To which is added Monsieur Corneilles POMPEY & HORACE tragedies, with several other translations out of French

London, Printed by T. N for Henry Herringman, 1678.. Third authorised folio edition, 1678. 4to, 290 x 180 mm, 11½ x 7 inches, frontispiece portrait engraved by William Faithorne, pages (34), 198; (8), 124, separate dated title pages for the 2 plays which follow the poems, bound in contemporary full calf, blind ruled border with small ornament at corners, raised bands with gilt decoration in compartments, gilt lettered morocco label to spine, edges marbled. Light pitting to surface of covers, spine rubbed, small repair at head of spine, very small chip to head of upper hinge and tiny chip to tail of spine, tiny crack at head and tail of lower hinge, armorial bookplate to front pastedown, fore-edge margin of frontispiece trimmed, 2 very small closed margin tears, neatly repaired, another closed tear due to a paper flaw runs from the top edge to the first line of text, neatly repaired with no loss of text, contents clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy of a scarce book. Katherine Philips (1632-1664) the noted female poet, is remembered chiefly today for her accounts in her poems of her friendships with women. Her version of Corneille's tragedy La Mort de Pompee was first published in her lifetime in 1663. This was followed by an unauthorised 8vo edition of her poems shortly before her premature death from smallpox in 1664. This was withdrawn a few days after it appeared as having been inaccurately printed. The authorised (in folio) edition was prepared for publication by Katherine's friend Sir Charles Cotterell, Charles II's Master of Ceremonies and included the tragedy Pompey and the previously unpublished Horace. This was first published in 1667 and was obviously popular as reprints appeared in 1669, 1678, and 1710, remarkable for a dead female poet of that period. The translations of French poems and one Italian poem run from page 170 to 198, pagination restarts for the Corneille tragedies. The bookplate bears the name Hans Sloane Esqr. most likely that of the great nephew of Sir Hans Sloane the famous natural history collector whose bequest of books and artifacts formed the foundation of the British Museum.

Flora in Arth teil. Bonifaz in Steinen teil.

Very light age-toning, particularly at outer edges, occasional minor foxing and soiling. A very good copy. In a cloth clamshell box, leather label. A fine gathering in a single volume of the early English translations of Tavernier's renowned and informative accounts of his travels in Asia. Lach refers to the author as "one of the most celebrated travelers of the seventeenth century and one of its greatest authorities on the routes of Eastern travel and on the diamond mines of India." The son of a Parisian geographer, Tavernier completed six overland journeys to Turkey, Persia, and India between 1631 and 1668. "In 1676-77 at Paris, Tavernier published in two volumes LES SIX VOYAGES, one of the most popular books of the seventeenth century. The first volume is centered on Turkey and Persia; the second on India, Ceylon, and the East Indies. By 1712 this work was reprinted at least six times in French, three times in English, and one time each in German, Dutch, and Italian" - Lach. THE SIX VOYAGES... records Tavernier's extensive travels through India, Ceylon, Indonesia, and Persia. Lach writes that the VOYAGES, "are rich in materials on routes, traveling conditions, trading practices, the mines of Golconda [in India], and the Dutch and English activities in the East. While Tavernier's contemporaries debated the authenticity of the VOYAGES, modern scholars agree that they constitute a valuable source for Indian history during the years from 1640 to 1667, or for almost a generation." The twenty-four plates include numerous engravings of coins and gems, reflecting the author's commercial activities, as well as images of town plans and scenes of local color. Two of the finely engraved plates provide examples of Arabic script. The second work, A COLLECTION OF SEVERAL RELATIONS & TREATISES SINGULAR AND CURIOUS, is the English translation of Tavernier's 1679 supplement to the original account of his six voyages. Composed of five separate parts based on the author's own observations and reports from other travellers, these accounts include descriptions of Japan (and Christian persecution there); French negotiations in Persia and India following the establishment of Colbert's East India Company; the kingdom of Tongking (now the northern part of Vietnam); the author's own observations on commerce in the East Indies; and Tavernier's highly critical remarks on "how the Hollanders manage their affairs in Asia." The two maps (on one folding leaf) are of Tonking and Japan; all eight plates show scenes of Tongking, including two related to funerary customs, one of pagodas, and one with fine detail of the costumes of the court. A fine set of the early English translations of Tavernier's celebrated and authoritative account of the East Indies. COX pp.275-76. Lach, ASIA IN THE MAKING OF EUROPE III, Book 1, pp.416-18. Henri Spondanus (Henri de Sponde) A convert from Calvinism, Bishop of Pamiers, born at Mauléon, in the Basses-Pyrénées 6 January 1568; died at Toulouse 18 May 1643. After studying humanities at the Calvinist college of Orthez, he accompanied the royal ambassador to Scotland and, upon his return, took up the study of jurisprudence. In 1589 he was jurist at the Parliament of Tours. Convinced of the truth of the Catholic religion by the writings of Bellarmine and the instructions of Duperron he became a Catholic 21 Sept. 1595. In 1600 he accompanied Cardinal de Sourdis to Rome where he was ordained a priest on 7 March 1606. Pope Paul V then appointed him reviser of the briefs of the Poenitentiaria. In 1625 he was created Bishop of Pamiers, in which capacity he laboured with great zeal for the preservation of Catholicism and converted numerous Protestants. Owing to ill-health he resigned his diocese in 1639 and retired to Toulouse. His writings are: "Les cimetières sacrés" (Bordeaux, 1596); "Annales ecclesiastici Cæsaris Baronii in Epitomen redacti" (Paris, 1612); "Annales sacri a mundi creatione ad ejusdem redemptionem" (Paris, 1637), an epitome of the "Annals" of Tornielle; "Annalium Baronii continuatio ab a. 1197 quo is desinit ad a. 1622" (Paris, 1639). This work is Sponde's continuation of The Venerable Baronius Caesar's master work "Annales ecclesiastici a Christi nato ad annum 1198" ( The History of The Church from The Nativity until the Year 1198) Baronius Caesar (1538-1607), Italian ecclesiastical historian, Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He went to Rome c.1557 and soon came under the tutelage of St. Philip Neri. His chief work, the Annales ecclesiastici a Christi nato ad annum 1198 (1588-1607) (Ecclesiastical Annals from the Nativity to the year 1198) was a response to the Lutheran, Historia Ecclesiae Christi (1559-74) (History of the Church of Christ). As Vatican librarian, Baronius had access to the sources in the archives. His use of this material and his inclusion of many previously unpublished sources accounts for the completeness and usefulness of the Annales. Its accuracy has been questioned by Protestant critics. Baronius was a strong defender of the Papacy and was largely responsible for the Roman martyrology. He became superior of the Oratory (1593) on St. Philip Neri's death, a cardinal (1596), and was confessor to Pope Clement VIII.         The true intellectual system of the universe: the first part; wherein, all the reason and philosophy of atheism is confuted; and its impossibility demonstrated

London: Richard Royston, 1678. First edition. Hardcover. Folio. pp.[20], 899, [85]. With frontispiece engraving by R. White after the painting by Jan Batista Caespers. Lacking the two advertisement leaves in the rear. Title is printed in red and black. All published. Page numbering is erratic but text is continuous. Interior pages contain some scattered foxing; an occasional page is moderately age-toned or uniformly foxed; periodic mild soiling, staining and general wear are present. The prelims and final leaves contain some minor chipping. A chip (15 mm long) is carefully patched on the inner edge of the frontispiece but skims the image by 4 mm inwards; a marginal tear, running half way along the outer edge of the impression is professionally sealed; the bottom margin of the plate is trimmed a few millimeters. The title page contains a name printed in an old hand; a spot of staining is present on the upper margin of the title (same on the frontispiece). A marginal tear is sealed on pp. 61, 475 and the upper part of p.883. A couple of marginal corners are chipped / torn. A chip in the outer margin of pp. 479 and a hole in the margin of p.825 are both patched with early paper. Rebound in full calf with blind tooled covers after an early period style. An old spine label is preserved. Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688) was an English theologian and a member of the so-called Cambridge Platonist circle which included the likes of Henry More. Cudworth’s “Intellectual System of the Universe” was an attempt to reconcile Atomism with Platonism and the belief that humans have immortal souls. The author theorizes that there is a plastic nature or aether which forms the basis of matter. The work contains much discussion of ancient philosophy, religion and esoteric doctrines. A second part to the work was planned but never published. [Caillet 2717; ESTC R27278; Neville I, p.314]

Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Bibl. danica III, sp. 1235. Ej i Thesaurus. Warmholtz 5055, not.

The True Intellectual System of the Universe?

London: Printed for Richard Royston, 1678 First edition. Contemporary calf, rebacked to style, though gilt stamping is a little crude, edges sprinkled red. . Folio. Former owner's ink inscription on front free endpaper, dated 1752. A very good, clean copy. This is the main work of Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688), a leader of the group known as the "Cambridge Platonists." It is an answer to Hobbes' Leviathan. Cudworth contrasts the tenets of the materialists (Democritus, Lucretius) with the idealism of Plato and Aristotle. Lengthy developments aim at refuting paganism and atheism "with all the reasons that his reading could supply."

London, Printed by J.C. for W. Crook, 1678. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary full calf binding with gilt spine. Hinges worn and capitals quite worn, with lack of ab. 1 cm of upper capital. Old, large, beatiful ex-libarry book-plate (South Library, 1860) pasted into inside of front board, weapon of same library beautifully blindstamped to top of title-page. A bit of overall minor brownspotting and soiling, but internally overall a nice and well preserved copy. (6), 136, (7, advertisements) pp. + 1 folded engraved plate. Pp. 133-136 consistes of "The Proportion of a Straight Line to half the Arc of a Quadrant" (which the engraved plate accompanies) and contains, three large engraved illustrations of lines and arcs.. The very rare first edition of Hobbes' last work, which constitutes the final definition of his great mechanistic system of natural philosophy as well as the final blow in the famous Wallis-Hobbes feud. "Hobbes last work of all, published when he was over ninety, "was a new set of dialogues on physical questions, in the fashion of the earlier ones, but now with a stroke added at Wallis's doctrine of gravitation in the "De Motu". And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had maintained the long quarter of a century of strife." (C.G. Robertson)" (Macdonald and Hargreaves). The dispute between John Wallis and Thomas Hobbes, which lasted more than 25 years and became one of the most significant ones within the field of algebra and geometry, was sparked by Thomas Hobbes' "De corpore", in which Hobbes subordinates mathematics to geometry and geometry to kinematics and furthermore claimed to prove the squaring of the circle. The feud could be considered one between an amateur and a professional, but the amateur was not just any amateur, it was one of the most brilliant minds of the 17th century, a philosopher whose social and political philosophy, developed upon the ideas of Euclid's classical geometry and his idea of proofs and theorems, have dominated this field ever since, namely Thomas Hobbes. And the mathematician was not just a professional mathematician, he was one of the greatest of the 17th century, ranking second only to Newton, namely John Wallis. After his "De Corpore", Hobbes retracted the proof for the squaring of the circle, but he did not give up trying to prove it. In fact, he was so convinced that he would be able to construe such a proof that he maintained it throughout the rest of his life and never gave up. As a physicist and mathematician, Hobbes was a "classical" thinker, and he was fully convinced of the truth of Greek philosophy and geometry. Wallis, on the other hand, was a "modern" thinker, who greatly influenced modern mathematics. The battle between the two came to be one of the longest, most amusing, most sarcastic, and most fruitful debates ever between two brilliant minds, and although one must still conclude that Hobbes was wrong, it is often said that this dispute in effect led to the discovery of the calculus. As opposed to Wallis, Hobbes was not a professional mathematician, and he was so blindly convinced with classical geometry that he did not see the capabilities of algebra, and he refused to see that Wallis was the true winner of the mathematical battles; in fact, he accused Wallis' methods of being ignorant and mad. Wallis, on the other hand wrote things like "Mr. Hobbes loves to call that chalk which others call cheese". And so the ongoing battle continued. Hobbes continued to be unaware of the fact that his method of squaring the circle was wrong, and he even used it and his solutions on other geometrical problems, contributing to further attacks from Wallis. Only in 1672 did Wallis give up - but Hobbes did not. His final say in the matter was published in 1678, at the age of 90, with his important final work, his "Decameron Physiologicum", which constitutes a new set of 10 dialogues about natural science in which he focuses on Wallis' famous book "De Motu", which had appeared in 1669, and which dealt with gravitation and centers of gravity. The work contained also at the end his final demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of a circle. Hobbes died the following year, in 1679, and the present work thus constitutes the last thing that we have from him. It is this matter which obviously occupied his final professional thoughts, as it had done for some 25 years. In this amazing work by the 90 year old brilliant thinker, we find an interesting mixture of the old and the new. His account of matter and motion is clearly in the spirit of Descartes and the contemporary mechanical philosophers, but he never loses sight of Aristotelian doctrines and keeps true to Greek thought and physics. With his treatment of gravitation, he here fires off his final shot against Wallis, and with his demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of a circle at the end of the work, one of the strangest and most interesting intellectual debates was laid to rest. As mentioned by Frank Adams in 'The Birth and Development of the Geological Sciences', (1938), Athanasius Kircher was a member of the society of Jesus and wrote a number of great volumes about many subjects, he is best known for this work, which first appeared in 1664. In it he considers all that is within the earth, including rivers and mineral waters, presenting a theory which was widely accepted during the later middle ages, in the preface to the volume Kircher outlines how he gathered the material for it, writing that he was passing through Sciliy and the Lipari Islands in 1636 when the great Calabrian earthquake destroyed large parts of this area. The enormity of the power of the forces of nature and its devastating results had a major effect upon him, which was strengthened by his visit to Vesuvius and its surrounding areas causing him to want to delve into the mysteries of the earth and its forces.
