        L'opere chirurgiche

Bologna: Longhi, 1678. Fabrizio, Girolamo [Fabricius ab Aquapendente]. (ca. 1533-1619). L'opere chirurgiche. . . . Folio. [12] 359 [1]pp. 9 engraved plates of orthopedic and surgical instruments, the first signed "Gio. Bettamini fece," the rest unsigned. Bologna: Gioseffo Longhi, 1678. 328 x 217 mm. Modern vellum, leather spine label. Inner margin of half-title expertly repaired, moderate browning and foxing. Very good copy. First Edition in Italian of Fabrizio's collected surgical works, first published in Latin in an unillustrated small-format edition in 1619. The plates illustrating this Italian edition first appeared in the 1647 folio Latin edition issued by Bolzetta; these were reproduced in later editions and translations. This edition of Fabrizio's collected surgical works contains Italian translations of the Pentateuchos cheirurgicum (first ed. 1592) and the Operationes chirurgicae, originally published in 1619. "The five books of the Pentateuchos are primarily devoted to the description of tumors, wounds, ulcers and fistulas, fractures, and dislocations; to these the Operationes adds a description of surgical instruments (some of which are illustrated) and classic surgical techniques, including a discussion of particular technical expedients devised by Fabricius himself and emphasizing some differences between Fabrizio's technique and that of others" (DSB). Of particular interest is Fabrizio's extensive discussion of dentistry and oral surgery, in which he describes techniques for various operations such as tartar removal, treatment of dental caries, the filing and extraction of teeth, tooth replacement, and the treatment of lockjaw and jaw dislocations. "One noteworthy item, which must be regarded as progress, is that we do not find a single word in [Fabrizio's] work about loosening teeth through cauterizing agents, the treatment which was so highly cultivated by the Arabs and so eagerly incorporated in the West" (Hoffmann-Axthelm, Hist. Dentistry, p. 143; also pp. 142 & 144). Fabrizio described several dental instruments, such as the "pelican" for tooth extraction, the crow's bill forceps for removing roots, the stork's bill forceps for removing incisors, the "dog's bite" forceps, a drill, a rasper, etc. These are not shown here, but were illustrated by Scultetus, pupil of Fabrizio's successor Spigelius, in his Armamentarium chirurgicum (1655 and numerous later eds.). Also of interest is the suit of orthopedic armor designed by Fabrizio and illustrated in the first two plates; this device "was in the shape of a man, [and] designed to combine in one apparatus the principles for all existing devices for the correction of orthopedic injuries and deformities" (DSB).

Sammelband of 23 English Almanacs for the year 1678, bound by Samuel Mearne

London & Cambridge: [Various printers], 1678. FIRST EDITIONS. Contemporary gilt-panelled red morocco, bound in the workshop of SAMUEL MEARNE (Royal Binder), crowned monogram of Charles II in each corner, spine gilt, horizontal vellum divider strips between each almanac. Top of spine rubbed, bottom damaged, cover corners and outer ends of raised bands worn; some toning, soiling, and minor stains. Preserved in a fitted green linen protective case. Octavo. Most almanacs printed in red and black, some with astrological text diagrams and woodcuts ALMANACS FROM THE "GLORIOUS REVOLUTION" -- an imposing volume of 23 Almanacs from the Year 1678, bound in the workshop of Samuel Mearne, Royal bookbinder to Charles II. Our binding is nearly identical to the 1683 Sammelband of Almanacs that is reproduced in the Folger's Fine and Historic Bookbindings catalogue (6:12). THIS VOLUME REPRESENTS NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF THE RECORDED ALMANAC EDITIONS PRINTED IN ENGLAND FOR THE YEAR 1678, a signal year in British history in which Reports of a 'Popish Plot' circulated widely throughout the kingdom. Public fears of Catholic influence had surfaced during the reign of Charles II (reigned 1660-1685), when it became known that James, then known as the Duke of York, was a Catholic. * This huge conglomeration of early English almanacs is of great significance to scholars of the history of astronomy, astrology, medicine, politics, society, and literature. Astrology was the most systematic attempt to explain natural phenomena until the modern scientific revolution. The science of astrology was divided into two parts: natural (i.e. planetary influences on medicine and agriculture) and judicial (interpreting planetary influences in order to make predictions, usually political). The revival of English astrology is closely linked with the renaissance of mathematics. Astrologers were bringing to a wide public the ideas of the most advanced modern astonomers, in a popular and elementary form. * Almanacs sought to fill many roles, and contained data on fairs, weights and measures, postal services, tables of the kings, calendars (which were used to date fairs, law days and legal documents), weather forecasts, astronomical information relating to farming (with the best times to plow, sow, fell timber, etc.), astrological data supplied on medical problems (indicating proper times for surgery, blood-letting, etc.). Indeed, the "Zodiacal Man" was probably the ONLY work of reference available to a vast number of unqualified physicians. And finally, Almanacs contained an abundance of popular news, and popular literature, social comment, political speculation, and cheap sensationalism. It is well known that the first truly "popular" forms of literature were issued in Almanacs, such as these. * The present set -- which dates from the pivotal year of 1678 -- is exceptional in that it brilliantly documents the use of the Almanac as a vehicle of politics. In 1678 a clergyman named Titus Oates spread rumours of a ' Popish Plot' to kill Charles and place James on the throne. The public panic caused by this groundless assertion led to the ' Exclusion Bill' crisis of 1678-1681. The Exclusion Bill was a parliamentary Bill aimed at excluding James from the line of succession in favour of Charles II's illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth. It was passed by the House of Commons, thanks to the votes of the Whigs, in 1679 but it failed to pass through the House of Lords. * After the end of the Puritan Commonwealth, the restored king of England, Charles II married Mary, the daughter of his younger brother the Duke of York, to William in 1677. When Charles II died childless, the crown passed to the Duke, now James II. James was reported to be Catholic, and his wife certainly was. Anti-Catholicism was at a zenith, and members of the dissenting religions (the various Protestant churches, including the Puritans (modern Presbyterians), Independents (modern day Baptists), and Quakers, among many others had rebelled against a potential Catholic conversion previously. However, James II was tolerated because of his heir: Mary. She was Protestant, as was her husband. * On April 11, 1677 French troops defeated Prince William III; the year 1678 is further significant in that it marks the date of publication of John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" (Part One) in which Christian follows the straight and narrow path to heaven; in this year Huygens proposed his wave theory of light. [23] (of [24]) leaves; lacks A8 [A2197]. * BINDING: The binding can be confidently attributed to Samuel Mearne, the Royal Binder to Charles II: the crowned monogram C was Royal property, and moreover the massed tooling surrounding the inner panel is composed of unmistakable tools that appear on numerous Mearne bindings (such as BL 7f13 which is number 20 in Howard Nixon's "English Restoration Bookbindings"). We are unable to explain why such a huge number of 1678 Almanacs were ordered to be bound in one volume by the Royal Binder; the person who commissioned the binding was obviously closely associated with the court of Charles II. -- Subsequently in the library of the Occult collector Dianel Ruzo. * LITERATURE: See especially Bernard Capp, English Almanacs 1500-1800: Astrology and the Popular Press (Cornell, 1979).         A New Map of Africa from the Latest Observations.

Double page engraved map, 500mm x 580mm (24" x 20"), hand colored in outline, title cartouche in lower left corner. Scattered short tears and chips in margins, some minor browning and offsetting, paper a little brittle; still attractive with a crisp and bright image. John Senex (1678-1740) was a well-respected English cartographer that was named geographer to Queen Anne. Around 1719 he published a small book of undecorated maps, but a couple of years later he went upscale and produced a large set of maps of various parts of the world in 1721. This is a somewhat scarce attractive map of the African continent, which includes a decorative cartouche that shows the pyramids, a Moor brandishing a sword, and a shield mounted by a dragon. The map has good detail, even of the interior, for the period, and according to the title, is based on the latest observations. Norwich 76. Van De Gohm 142.

LETTERA INTORNO ALL'INVENZIONE DEGLI OCCHIALI. Scritta da Francesco Redi all'Illustrissimo Signor Paolo Falconieri.

Per Francesco Onofri Stampatore Granducale 1678 Prima edizione. Cm.25,4x18,4. Pg.14 + 2 bianche. Legatura in cartoncino rigido marmorizzato. Allo specchio anteriore tassello in pelle bleu con il titolo dell'opera impresso in oro. Al frontespizio incisione calcografica con stemma della Crusca e il relativo motto "Il più bel fior ne coglie". All'inizio del testo stemma mediceo su rame.

A Discourse Whether it may be Lawful to take Use for Money

London: Will Crook,, 1678. Written by Sir Robert Filmer, and published by Sir Roger Twisden, with his preface to it. Duodecimo (154 × 86 mm), pp. [38], 119 + 4 advertisment leaves. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, rebacked, red morocco label, spine lettered gilt, boards single ruled in blind, faint marbling to the edges. Bookplate of the L.A. Law Library to the front pastedown. Hinges strengthened, boards a little scuffed, marginal toning, spine gilt lettering faded. A very good copy. Reissued under this title, it was originally written in 1630 and first published in 1653 under the title of Quaestio quodlibetica. Sir Roger Twysden, the man responsible for its first publication states in the preface that the work was written 'almost thirty yeares since', suggesting a date for its composition in the later 1620s. Filmer here defends the paying of interest on money borrowed as compatible with biblical instruction, writing in response to Roger Fenton's Treatise of Usury.

A couple of tiny rust spots, but A SUPERB COPY, clean and fresh internally, and THE LOVELY BINDING UNUSUALLY LUSTROUS AND ENTIRELY UNWORN. This is an exceptionally well-preserved specimen of classical Parisian bookbinding at its finest, from the collection of a man known equally for his love of beautiful bindings and for his insistence on perfect condition. Capé (d. 1867) was one of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century, and he was especially well known for the delicacy of his work, which was obviously necessary in the present case. He was the binder to the Empress Eugenie, and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire." His work has always been highly sought after, and it resides in all of the great collections where bindings are considered important holdings. This volume contains all of Livy in one book, printed in double columns, and is surprisingly legible, despite its small typeface. Called by Dibdin "a masterpiece of printing," it is the fifth of a total of six publications of Livy by the Elzeviers, and the only one designed for a single volume, rather than three. The present version was prepared by the great scholar Johann Friedrich Gronov (1611-71), who, in Sandys' words, produced "editions [that] mark an epoch in the study of Livy, of both the Senecas, and of Tacitus and Gellius." Among London booksellers in the second half of the 19th century, James Toovey (1814-93) was second only to Bernard Quaritch. Henry Huth, a most discriminating collector, was a good client. In "The Book-Hunter in London," William Roberts notes that Toovey was considered "very particularly the great authority on bindings," and he made enough money as a bookseller to spend the last decade of his life amassing a private library of notable books in notable bindings.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Gio[vanni] Batt[ist]a Chizzola").

[Philippsburg], "dall' Campo Cesareo", 4. X. 1678. - 1 S. und Adresse auf gefalt. Doppelblatt (Faltbrief). Gr.-4to (235 x 170 mm).
