        Memoires de Hollande

Chez Estienne Michallet, 1678. - Chez Estienne Michallet, à Paris 1678, In 12 (10x15,5cm), (8) 456pp., relié. - Prima edizione, molto rara, a lungo attribuito a Madame de La Fayette, pubblicato l'anno di La principessa di Cleves, poi Courtilz de Sandras e anche Pierre Daniel Huet. Marocco completa fine del XIX firmato Bellevallée rosso lucido vecchio. Torna ai nervi giansenista. Ampio fregio interno dorato.

Tagliati corti in frontespizio.

Francia, M.Ant. Raimondi, Fr. Primaticcio, i Procaccini (Ercole, Camillo, G. Cesare e Carlo Ant.), i Carracci (Lodovico, Agostino, Annibale ed Antonio), G. Reni, G.L. Valesio, Fr. Albani, D. Zampieri, A. Mitelli, S. Contarini, ecc.

Artist: Seutter Matthias (- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c 1728 1678 - Artist: Seutter, Matthias (1678- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c. 1728; - Condition: Left margin perfectly replaced and partly right margin; Map depicts the Caspian sea with its surrounding countries, such as Atrachan, Kurkent, Maracanda, Kesker, Sagawat and Derbent.MatthŠus Seutter was born in 1685, the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World (Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt) with 46 maps, the 1734 Large Atlas (Grosser Atlas) with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas Small Atlas (Atlas minor) with 64 maps. MatthŠus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

An apology for the True Christian Divinity, As the same is held forth, and preached by the People, Called, in Scorn, Quakers: Being a full Explanation and Vindication of their Principles and Doctrines...Written and Published in Latine, for the information of Strangers, by Robert Barclay. And now put into our own Language, for the benefit for his Country-men

[London]: [s.n.]. Printed in the Year 1678 [22], 392pp, [22]. Contemporary blind-ruled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Rubbed, with slight chipping to spine, short cracks to upper joints, bumping and tearing to corners. Some chipping/loss to endpapers. Elizabeth Bland's copy, with her name to lettering-piece; more lately in the Selbourne LIbrary, with small ink-stamp to verso of title. Early ink annotations (in two separate hands?) to the margins of seven leaves. Twentieth-century biographical notes on two Friends named Elizabeth Bland are loosely inserted. Robert Barclay (1643-1690), pioneering Scottish Quaker. Despite concluding his education at the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Scots College, Paris, then under the stewardship of his uncle (also Robert Barclay), Barclay instead followed his father's example and joined the Society of Friends in 1667. An ardent and outspoken theological scholar, Robert Barclay began defending his own faith in certain tracts during the early 1670s - including Truth cleared of Calumnies (1670), and a Catechism and Confession of Faith (1673). Composed and first printed in Latin (Amsterdam, 1676), An Apology provoked widespread theological debate and secured great popularity amongst Quakers; providing the most complete definition and defence of the Quaker movement - often described as the 'Quaker Bible' - and it is little wonder that a translation into English swiftly followed. Focusing particularly on the primary importance of 'The Inward Light of Christ' to Quaker faith, this English translation has has remained in print ever since. Although the work did not succeed in achieving Barclay's aim of ameliorating the persecution under which Quakers had suffered in Britain, his work did eventually secure the attention of King James II and his part ownership (with, amongst others, William Penn) of the emergent American colony of East Jersey. The overwhelming Quaker influence over the area eventually led to Barclay's election as governor, despite never having set foot in the Americas. One of three editions published in 1678, this edition of 398pp is considered the second English edition, and likely London printed. This copy bear's a lettering-piece of Elizabeth Bland; perhaps the Elizabeth Bland of Lancashire, one of the '7000 handmaids' who sent a petition to parliament regarding the inequity of tithe regulations for non-conformists in 1659? Wing B721.. Second English edition. Quarto.

Artist: Seutter Matthias (- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c 1730 1678 - Artist: Seutter, Matthias (1678- 1757) Augsburg; Issued in: Augsburg; date: c. 1730; - Condition: ; Map shows the city map of Jerusalem with description of the buildings. MatthŠus Seutter was born in 1685, the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg.

Wolfgang Moritz Endter 1678 and 1687, Nürnberg - Equine porn from Baroque Germany? Also the ultimate in equine coifs from that time. 34 by 21 cm. The first volume has 46 engraved illustrations, one being the half-title plate, the others, about a third of a page each. The second work comes with 43 plates, including title (or half-title), five folding plates, five two-paged plates and three plates of which have two illustrations each and are counted as two in the book's own numbering system (but not by us). Other copies located on OCLC First Search have the same or lower plate count, with a single copy, that owned by the Huntington Library, supposedly containing 48 leaves of plates. We believe this counts the double paged plates as two each, and thus our copy is complete. The first work is in Latin and German, the second work also includes French and Italian. The first work is an important work in the veterinary literature, while the second, concerned primarily with the breeding of horses, has the far wider appeal to today's audience for equine literature because of the graphic and sometimes very strange plates. The vellum is heavily soiled and wizened, with repaired tears along joints, and large cup stain on front, etc. Spine tip repaired. Missing flap to plate 10 of the second volume.

An ESSAY, Upon the Inscription of MacDuff's Crosse in FYFE. 1678

Edinburgh: Printed by the Heir of Andrew Anderson, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, 1678. 1st edition (Wing C-7593). Bound in later stiff grey card stock paper covers, with title hand-inked to front cover. Bookplate [Gilmour of Lundin and Montrave, signed in the plate, "A. S. Leslie, 1898"]. Paper a bit grubby from use, with leaves trimmed a bit lean. Old repair to title leaf. A VG copy.. 20 pp. 4to: A - B^4 C^2. 7-5/8" x 5-3/4" This is a very rare essay about the inscription on MacDuff's Cross in Fife, Scotland. "According to tradition it marks the spot where the Thane of Fife passed on his way to Auchtermuchty while fleeing from Macbeth. It was erected by Malcolm III to commemorate the death of Macbeth. The inscription along with the shaft were destroyed at the Reformation and only the base remains... Although badly damaged in 1559 by the Reformers, the cross is still very much a legendary place of sanctuary for all those of the MacDuff clan who had been involved in murder. Such MacDuff clan members could achieve atonement by performing a series of rituals. Having touched the MacDuff stone, they would then wash themselves nine times at nearby Ninewells. They would also have to pay a forfeit of nine cows.".

With engraved frontispiece, engraving on title-page, 30 engraved emblems in text (ca. 10 x 12.5 cm) by Vincent vander Vinne in the first part, and 4 engraved emblems in text (10 x 12.5 cm) by Jan Caspar Philips in the second part. Contemporary marbled wrappers.

Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 760; NNBW IV, cols. 1260-1262; Praz, p. 502. First and only edition of an emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). It is an independent continuation of Spinniker's Leerzaame Zinnebeelden (Haarlem, 1714) which contained 50 emblems by Vincent van de Vinne (1686-1742), the grandson of the famous painter Vincent vander Vinne (1629-1702) who was a pupil of Frans Hals in Haarlem. The 30 emblems in the present work are by the same artist, and represent scenes from daily life, scenes in the country, in shops, households, etc. and are accompanied by Bible verses underneath. An explanation of each emblem is given on the following pages in the form of a poem. The second part has an individual title-page, Spiegel der boetvaardigheid en genade, and contains 4 engravings by Jan Caspar Philips (1690-1775). It deals with the concepts of repentance and mercy with reference to Bible passages, and ends with the Stichtelyke gezangen: devout songs.Wrappers damaged, spine has disappeared and bookblock is split. Otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed, slightly browned with a few occasional small spots.

An Apology for the True Christian Divinity, as the same is held forth, and preached by the people called, in scorn Quakers ?

[Aberdeen: John Forbes], 1678. First English edition. [24], 412, [28] pp. 4to. Contemporary speckled sheep. Covers worn, with loss to tail of spine, boards exposed at fore-edge of covers, lower corner of X1 torn off with loss to text. First English edition. [24], 412, [28] pp. 4to. The first English edition of Barclay's classic work of Quaker theology, first published as Theologi? vere Christian? apologia (Amsterdam, 1676). This copy with the signature and notes of Quaker bibliographer and writer John Whiting (1656-1722). Whiting was persecuted and eventually imprisoned from 1679 to about 1685 for refusing to pay tithes, and he read this book while in prison (a marginal note marks Barclay's discussion "concerning Tythes"). Whiting's notes at the end of the book on Barclay's An Epistle of Love and Friendly Advice to the Ambassadors of the several Princes of Europe (1677) were perhaps later used for his Catalogue of Friends' Books (1708), "the first attempt at Quaker bibliography" (ODNB). Barclay's Episitle, as well as multiple editions of the Apology for the True Christian Divinity, are cited in Whiting's bibliography, p. 6. ESTC R14317; Wing B720 (citing this edition as the first). Provenance: John Whiting (inscription on title-page, "John Whiteing His Booke 1680," some marginalia, and long autograph note on p. 412 concerning Barclay's An Epistle of Love and Friendly Advice to the Ambassadors of the several Princes of Europe)
