Lettera intorno al'invenzione degli Occiali. Scritta da Francesco Redi all'Illustrissimo Signor Paolo Falconieri.

In Firenze, Per Francesco Onofri Stampatore Granducale, 1678, 4, 14, (2) pp., 1 Titel- und 1 Textkpferstichvignette, marmor. Kartonband d.Zt. mit einem Titelschild a.d. Deckel feines Exemplar beigelegt deutsche Übersetzung v. Th. Greeff. VERY RARE, FINE COPY of the FIRST EDITION of an important and first printed study study on the history of EYEGLASSES by the indefatigable observer and investigator Francesco Redi.Maintaining that the invention of eyeglasses was unknown to the ancient Jews, Greeks. Romans and Arabs he attributes it to a FRIAR ALESSANDRO SPINA of Pisa."A first edition of the "Letter on the Invention of Spectacles", which is of extreme importance in the history of spectacles. Redi, through ignorant of the inventor of spectacles, was able to determine that Alessandro da Spina reinvented them." "Redi quotes from a sermon which Girodano da Rivalto preached at Florence in 1305, "It is not yet 20 years since the art was discovered of making eyeglasses, which give the power to see distinctly, which is one of the best and most necessary arts that the world possesses". Redi also republished what is probably the first reference of the use of a spectacles - apassage from a manuscript dated 1289." Britsih. Optical Assoc. Libr. Cat., II (1935), p.88"The Pisan origin of spectacles was first put forth by Carlo Roberto Dati (1619-76), a professor at the University of Florence, in a lecture he delivered in 1673 at the famous Accademia della Crusca. This lecture was revised subsequently and finally published posthumously, incorporating information from the Pisan Chronicle and the Annals as excerpted with deliberate inaccuracies by his good friend. Francesco Redi (1626-1697), chief physician at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany and a renowned scholar with "a perverse pleasure in perpetrating literary frauds.' according to Rosen. Redis private agenda included making it appear that Spina was in effect the virtual inventor or at least the second inventor since the first had refused to divulge the secret. He liked the striking similarity between Spina and Galileo, another Pisan, who had made his own telescope just from a report about such an instrument supposedly invented in Holland without having seen the instrument itself. Though Redi was born in nearby Arezzo, he had strong Florentine sympathies, which even led him to manufacture a document in order to give Florence some role at least as far as the first mention of the invention was concerned. He claimed to possess a manuscript, "Treatise on the Management of the Family", written in 1299 by a certain Sandro di Pippozzo in which the author mentioned spectacles as a new invention: "I find myself so burdened by age that I would not have the capacity to read and write without glasses, called eyeglasses, discovered most recently for the relief of the needy elderly when their sight declines". If this quotation could be verified, it would be the earliest mention of spectacles, antedating both Giordano's sermon and the Pisan Chronicle, and even the first Venetian mention of 1300, although the Venetian source does not seem to have been known to Redi. Clearly, it was a spectacular find, had it been genuine. But the manuscript was never published or shown to scholars for examination and comment and there seems to be no trace of this Sandro. It was too good to be true had it been otherwise, Redi would have exhibited the manuscript and used it at least as the occasion for one of his lectures. We must agree with Rosen that the manuscript was a pure invention." Vincent Ilardi, Renaissance Vision from Spectacles to Telescopes (2006), p.14-15Gamba 825 "Prima e rara ed." The ornithology of Francis Willughby of Middleton in the county of Warwick Esq; fellow of the Royal Society. In three books. Wherein all the birds hitherto known, being reduced into a method sutable to their natures, are accurately described. The descriptions illustrated by most elegant figures, nearly resembling the live birds, engraven in LXXVII copper plates. Translated into English, and enlarged with many additions throughout the whole work. To which are added, three considerable discourses, I. Of the art of fowling: with a description of several nets in two large copper plates. II. Of the ordering of singing birds. III. Of falconry. By John Ray, fellow of the Royal Society

London: printed by A[ndrew]. C[larke]. for John Martyn, printer to the Royal Society, at the Bell in St. Pauls Church-Yard, MDCLXXVIII [1678]. First Edition thus. Paneled Calf. Near Fine+. First Edition in English of "one of the most important treatises on ornithology of all time, being the first systematic classification of the birds of the world." (Wood). Folio: [12],53,[3],55-271,[3],273-441,[7]pp, with 80 leaves of plates, most unsigned but some credited to Thomas Browne and three by F. H. van Hove, two by W. Faithorne, and one by W. Sherwin; two full-page letterpress tables. The two engraved plates showing techniques and equipment for snaring birds, often bound at p. 28, are here grouped with the 78 numbered plates (depicting more than 200 species) at the end. An excellent example, beautifully bound to style in recent speckled and paneled calf, spine gilt in seven compartments divided by raised bands, end papers renewed, title page in red and black. Binding pristine, book block generally clean and unmarked with widely intermittent spotting, one table with short closed tear (no loss), several plates lightly foxed, one plate shaved at outer edge with trivial loss. Wing W2880. Nissen IVB 991. BM(NH) V, p.2331. Wood (McGill), p.629. Zimmer (Ayer Ornithological Library), pp. 676-78. Anker (Copenhagen) 532. Lowndes 2939. In the 1660's, John Ray and his pupil (and, later, patron) Francis Willughby toured the Continent, gathering material for their planned complete classification of the vegetable and animal kingdoms. After Willughby's early death in 1672, which deprived Ray of both a collaborator and a friend, Ray took over his notes, and, having edited the incomplete manuscript and added his own observations, published Francisci Willughbeii ornithologiae libri tres; totum opus recognovit, digressit, supplevit Joannes Raius, in 1676. The present work, a translation by Ray, was published two years later and includes three more plates than the Latin edition as well as an expanded text, including three additional sections by Ray on fowling, falconry, and songbirds. In all, Ray and Willughby described more than 230 species, which they had themselves observed. Ray's systemization was revolutionary (Zimmer calls it the "cornerstone of modern systematic ornithology"), preserving the broad division of land and water birds, but rather than subdividing functionally, on grounds of diet, singing ability, and other behavioral traits, he introduced a classification based on anatomy, using for criteria foot structure, beak form, and body size. In the preface, Ray writes that the plates, despite some difficulties in communication between himself and the engravers, "are the best and truest, that is, most like the live Birds, of any hitherto engraven in Brass." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Kirchen-Geschichte, das ist: Catholisches Christenthum durch die ganze Welt auszgebreitet, Insonderheit bey nächst verflossenen, und anjetzo fliessenden Jahr-hundert

The first edition, Kerkelijke Historie van de geeheele Wereldt, came out in Antwerp between 1667 and 1671, and was subsequently translated into German and added to by other Jesuit historians. The work contains information on the Jesuit missions around the World, mainly focused on America and Asia -deals in remarkable length the missions of Brazil and Paraguay. It is handsomely illustrated with numerous half-page engravings in strong impressions. "Pages 311 to 457 are occupied with the Jesuit Missions among the Indians of Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Florida, Canada, Paraguay, and Maragnan [Island of St. Louis, a French colony off the coast of Brazil]. This portion of the work is illustrated with eighteen full-page copper-plate engravings, of which seven are portraits of Indians of each of the named countries, and eleven represent the martyrdom of the missionaries by the natives. These plates are beautifully drawn and engraved, and exhibit, with the most vivid and painful fidelity, the various forms of torture and massacre endured by the missionaries and their converts. The account of the missions in Florida and Canada fills thirty-four pages. One of the pages in this part of the work represents the martyrdom of Father Jogues and two French associates by the Mohawks; another exhibits the tortures by which Fathers Brebœuf and Lallemant were killed in Canada; and a third the murder of Fathers Daniel and Garnier by the Indians of the same country" (Field, 673). Hazart (1617-1690) was a Dutch Jesuit, author, historian and orator. His life was almost exclusively devoted to the struggle against the Calvinists of the Low Countries, but his real forte was writing. This universal church history is considered his greatest work; it deals with the Jesuit missions and missionaries in Asia, Africa, America and Europe. Among the fine engravings is a complex allegorical image, which visually suggests the goal of the Jesuit missions to expand throughout the world. In this engraving, a Mohul, an American Indian, and a Chinese are before a personified Church wearing the papal tiara and putti bearing a shield with the IHS motif. "Hazart divided his work into regional histories: Japanese, Chinese, Mughal, Vijayanagara, Abyssinian, African, Peruvian, Paraguayan, Brazilian, Floridian, Canadian, Mexican." (Luke Clossey, Salvation and Globalization in the Early Jesuit Missions, 2008, p. 216). JCB II (1675-1700), p. 234. Cordier, Japonica 379. Leclerc, Bibliotheca Americana (1878), 277. Sabin 31114.       Londini: Joh Martyn, 1678. First Edition. Small 4to, [viii], 250, [1]. The second treatise has a separate title-page. Illustrated with 9 folding engravings. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine gilt (worn at the extremities of the spine, and along the hinge, bookplate removed from end paper, small library stamp on title-page. Some age toning to the sides of the title-page. A very good tight clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 2527; BMNH 3:1155; Wing L2523. The English physician Martin Lister (1638-1712) was the Royal Physician of Queen Anne. This present work was the first monograph dedicated to the mollusks. Lister describes essentially three classes of animals, i. e. spiders, terrestrial and fluvial shells and marine shells. The first section he writes of the many mistakes of previous authors writing on Arachnidae, to their venom and their use (!) in therapy. A classification of British spiders precedes the second chapter of the first part, where the different species of spiders are described according to their aspect and their alimentary habits. The second part includes as well some general description of terrestrial and fluvial shells and their classification. The largest part deals with marine shells and is illustrated by splendid plates. Lister describes exhaustively both Bivalves and Gastropods, including however also a sea-urchin among the molluscs; the last section is dedicated to the fossil shells which are found in England

Reflexions sur les Constitutions de l'abbaye de La Trappe

Chez Pierre Granseigne, à Ville-Franche 1678, In 12 (8x14,3cm), (3) 40pp., relié. - Rare Edition printed Villefranche, after the original 1671 published in Paris. Work attributed to Bernard de Montfaucon but whose paternity is discussed. Half black Chagrin late nineteenth. Back to Jansenist nerves with title and date. Cropped short in title page. Bernard de Montfaucon, from Roquetaillade, near Limoux, was one of the most learned men of his time and this is one of the most famous of his time, including his monumental work: ancient explained in FIGS. He was a Benedictine monk of the Congregation of St. Maur. The Abbey of La Trappe, founded by the Cistercian order was annexed to the domain of the Benedictines. It will be reformed according to the seventeenth 'the rule of strict compliance by Rance, much more rigid and severe than that of the Cistercians. It is precisely this reform says Bernard de Montfaucon, reform breathed a spiritual renewal to Christianity, and who saved the Abbey of La Trappe from oblivion and decay in many abbeys which fell at that time. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Secunda editione auctiores & emendatiores editae à filio...Amsterdam, Henricus Wetstein, 1678. 12mo. With an engraved frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, a folding engraved plate, 20 full-page and 3 smaller engraved illustrations. Contemporary vellum.

Krivatsy 822; Roling, "Der Wal als Schauobjekt", in: Enenkel & Smith (eds.), Zoology in early modern culture, pp. 172-196; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1678.01; Wellcome II, p. 107. Second, expanded and illustrated edition, of a scientific study of unicorns and the miraculous properties of their horns. It was written by Thomas Bartholin (1616-1680), a Danish physician best known for his discovery of the lymphatic system. The author's father, Caspar Bartholin (1585-1629), and uncle, Ole Worm (1588-1654), had previously studied the horns of unicorns in a systematic way, with Worm concluding that the horns were in fact the tusks of a Narwhal. In De unicornu observations novae, Thomas combined all previous knowledge on unicorns and other horned animals and paid particular attention to the narwhal. Bartholin concluded that the Icelandic traders had sold the "horns" for hundreds of years, knowing they were the tusks of the Narwhal, a marine mammal, and that mainland Europeans took them for unicorn horns. Nevertheless, Bartholin saw no reason to consider the unicorn a fictitious animal. This second edition is expanded with Bartholin's study on the medicinal properties of the horns, prepared by his son Caspar (1655-1738). Bartholin concluded that the medicinal qualities were ascribed to them correctly and that the horn worked "like an early form of aspirin" (Roling). The second edition was also the first to be illustrated with numerous illustrations showing the narwhal and other horned animals, objects made from horns and a number of horns and tusks. The frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe shows an allegory of the traditional unicorn accompanied by several horned creatures. With bookplates and ownership inscriptions and annotations. With a few spots and the binding slightly soiled; a very good copy.

Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757 ) Augsburg; issued in : Augsburg; date: 1720 1678 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Very good; size (in cm): 49 x 58 - description: Decorative map of the total Peleponnes. - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Inside gilt borders. Edges gilt. (32),531,(31),30 pp. Scarce first French edition of Spinoza's "Tractatus theologico-politicus", 1670. (30) pp. at end, was written by Spinoza himself for this French edition."Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and the Tractatus contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion, in that speculation and precepts of conduct cannot collide. Spinoza, to whom any controversy was abhorrent, did not publish the Tractatus undtil 1670, and then anonymously with a bogus imprint."         LA SECCHIA RAPITA LE SEAU ENLEVE POEME HISTORIQUE DU TASSONI (TWO VOLUMES)

Guillaume De Luyne et Jean Baptiste Coignard, Paris 1678 - Two volumes, complete. Small 8vo. Full calf bindings with raised bands, dark red and green labels to the spines, gilt lettering and lines. Engraved head and tail pieces, also titlepages. All edges red. Green satin bookmarkers. Joints tight, pages clean. A solid and handsome copy. La Secchia Rapita (The Rape of the Pail) was written between 1614 and 1615 and first published in Paris in 1622. It was not to be published in Italy until Tassoni modified it slightly to accommodate the censorship of the Catholic Church. Tassoni paid for the first Italian edition, bearing his own name, in 1624 (the poem had been previously circulated under the pseudonym of Aldrovinci Melisone). The final edition was published in 1630. The poem is loosely based on a war originating from the battle of Zappolino fought between Modena and Bologna in 1325.
