WORLIDGE, John
WORLIDGE, John. Vinetum Britannicum or, A Treatise of Cider, and such other wines and drinks that are extracted from all manner of fruits growing in this kingdom : together with the method of propagating all sorts of vinous fruit-trees : and a description of the new-invented ingenio or mill, for the more expeditious and better making of cider : and also the right method of making metheglin and birch-wine. [26], 186, [6] p., [2] pp. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 2 full-page engraved plates. 8vo.,178 x 115 mm, bound in full English contemporary calf, brown title label on spine. London: [Thomas Dring], 1676. First Edition. One of the first books to thoroughly document the process of cider-making and also the first book to discuss the viability of cider as an industry specific to the British Isles and its climate. Worlidge describes in great detail the process of cider-making, propagating fruit, diseases, the preparation of land for planting orchards and highlights the profits in doing so. He also offers a new idea: that landowners consider the benefits of growing cider fruit and making cider as an economically advantageous agricultural alternative to traditional farming. Front hinge cracked, still a nice unsophisticated copy in its seventeenth-century English binding. Wing W3608. Cagle 1069. Simon BG 1632. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

It illustrates both the known and the unknown: the detailed coasts of New England and New France are offset by scattered knowledge of North America's west coast, and the in-depth rendering of Africa and Asia is balanced by the little-explored "almost third part of the world" labelled here as "the Southerne Unknowne Land," not to mention the Arctic north. Scattered texts tell the history of important discoveries by Columbus, Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, and others, and they are complemented by small portraits of some of these important figures around the border of the map. All of this impressive terrestrial information is surrounded by images and ideas of the heavens. Constellation maps of the northern and southern hemispheres are flanked by illustrations of the four elements: water, earth, fire and air. Diagrams in the corners of the map describe solar and lunar eclipses and other astronomical knowledge. In this hard-to-find uncolored state, the map reveals its fineness of its engraving and design. The map is in very good condition with no chips or tears. Discoloration at margin edges, not affecting the image. State 4 English text verso. Nürnberg Endter, 1676. (20,5 x 16,5 cm). (14) 1576 (32) S. Mit gestochenem Frontispiz, 28 (2 gefalteten) Kupfertafeln und 1 Textkupfer. Pergamentband der Zeit. Einzige Ausgabe. Cotterell, Charles.
First Edition. Folio. Original full leather binding. 7 raised bands, with gilt ornamentation and label to spine. A little bumping and rubbing with some splitting to the spine edge. Armorial plate to the inside front board. Various inscriptions (see notes below). Frontis engraving. There is a little nicking to the edge of the engraving. Title in red and black. Closed tear to the title page. [viii], 1-576. pages. Most of the book is clean and tidy, but with a little marking to the last few pages. Overal a decent copy. A gift and legacy of the Earls of Lindsay. An old inked inscription to verso of the Frontis states "The legacy of King Charles the 1st to Montague Earl of Lindsey. L. M. Bertie." There is another copy of Bertie's signature on the book dated 1732. This would appear to be Capt. Lord Montagu Bertie (died 1753). He was the great grandson of the Earl referred to. (Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey). The term "legacy" here cannot be taken literally, and is more likely to refer to the statement to the title. Both the King and the Earl were dead by the time of publication of the book. A large armorial plate to the inside front board states "The Hon. James Bertie esq. of Westminster. Second son to James late Earl of Abingdon 1702." These were the son and grandson of Montague the second earl A further inscription to the inside front board states "The gift of Montague Earl of Abingdon to Charles Bertie Rector of Uffington." Charles another of the sons of the second earl (and brother of James whose bookplate is here) - so the book would appear to have moved around the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ludolfo, Jobo
Jenae, ex Officina Orientali Samuelis Krebsii, 1676. Title page and 38 unnumbered pages of text. Half cloth binding from around 1870 with gilt spine-lettering and marbled boards. Very good condition outside, text shows browning and foxing. Stamp on reverse of title page. A particularly scarce and hardly known work, preceding Ludolf's famous publication on Ethiopia by a full 5 years and at the same time Ludolf's very first publication! - This is a preliminary outline of the material to be covered extensively in Ludolf's 'Istoria Aethiopica', which was published in three volumes from 1681 to 1693. Job Ludolf, a German German scholar, and the 'founder of Ethiopistics' (Katalog der Eutiner Landesbibliothek) gathered the most important information available about Ethiopia in his time, working for a time in collaboration with one of the Ethiopian monks who stayed in Rome. In addition to his monumental history of the country, he wrote dictionaries and grammars of Ge'ez and Amharic. His intensive studies of Ethiopian culture and life made his work the best 17thcentury source on the region described. 'A most important work on Abyssinia' (transl. from Paulitschke). AUGUSTIN D'HIPPONE.
A Paris, chez la Veuve Jean Camusat et Pierre le Petit, 1676.. in-8. 4 feuillets. 810 pages. 19 feuillets. (20x13,5cm). Exemplaire assez frais.

1676. Book: The Statutes at Large from MDCXL until this Time, by Joseph Keble of Grays-Inne, Esquire, London, printed by The Assigns of John Bill and Christopher Barker, His Majesties Printers, Folio, (9½" x 15"), black letter text, printed marginalia, and wood-cut royal coat of arms on title page. Occasional contemporary marginal notes in ink, perhaps indicating an update amendment. Later plain calf, worn, recased (too narrow) leaving boards tight. Title page repaired without loss of text but with loss of border to corner, and similar occasional repairs to corners of first forty leaves, otherwise clean. A reasonable copy of a very rare and important text. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into 17th century British law, with a huge range of topics covered, including trade regulations, forestry, the press, theft, coinage, gambling, a detailed act for rebuilding London after the fire, financing the monarchy, regulation of Parliament, duty, sentencing and fines, government of the navy and so on. Keble wrote a number of important accounts of statutes which are relatively common. This rare volume covers one of the most controversial and interesting periods in English history.
