SPEED, John & LAMB, Francis
London,: Thomas Bassett, 1676. DescriptionEngraved map (380 by 510mm to the neatline, full margins, showing the plate mark), text on verso. NotesA fine and attractive map of Virginia and Maryland. Publishers Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell republished English cartographer John Speeds (1552-1629) popular 1611 atlas, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain, in 1676. As a supplement, they included new section, A Prospect of the most Famous parts of the World, which contained maps of the English colonies of New England, Virginia, and Maryland. The Maryland and Virginia map was the ninth (and last) derived from John Smiths 1612 map of the region. Smiths map was widely copied and remained the most accurate map of the Chesapeake until Augustine Herrmans 1673 representation of the region. The text on the verso is condensed from John Ogilbys America.Francis Lambs original work combined two earlier maps. He retained Smiths original orientation (West is at the topoffering the land from the perspective of a ship sailing from England) and incorporated Hermanns geographical details into his own. This map has been repeatedly, and incorrectly, attributed to Speed because it first appeared in the major re-publication of his earlier work. By 1676, Speed had been dead for 47 years. BOUHOURS, Dominique
1676 Crusades Aubusson at Siege of Rhodes Greece OTTOMAN Turks Muslim Mehmed II Dominique Bouhours was a 17th-century Jesuit historian and author known for his treatises on the French language, secrets, and curious humor. He also published a historical account of the life of Pierre d’Aubusson, a 15th-century Hospitaller zealot who radically opposed the Ottomans. Bouhours account is largely considered imaginative since little is known of d’Aubusson’s early years; still, though, this work is a fascinating and important look into Knight Hospitaller crusades against the Ottoman Turks in the 1400s. The most important aspect of this book is the overview of the Siege of Rhodes at the gulf of Trianda, whose defense was led by d’Aubusson. This fine two-volume set features two full-page portrait engravings of Mohamet II and his son Zizime as well as a folding city view of Rhodes. This 1676 edition was published in two tomes the same year as the single volume first edition. AVELINE, Pierre
Paris,: Fait par Aveline sur le Petit Pont,, [after 1676, possibly c.1686].. Copper engraving with fine early hand-colour. The first state of Aveline's print showing London before the Fire from Southwark. The key identifies the most important buildings, including the Swan and Globe theatres, the old St Paul's Cathedral and the first London Bridge, complete with its buildings and the heads of traitors. The view is derived from Visscher's ‘excudit' prospect, via Merian's (item 2). It therefore shows London from Whitehall to St Katherine's and beyond, with the fictitious north bend in the river on the right. Rather more of Southwark is shown, though the new topographical detail introduced is also fictitious. In the foreground is minuscule staffage consisting of equestrian, perambulating, and seated figures, including an artist sketching the view. This early state with Aveline's imprint is rare; it is usually found in later states with the new St Paul's Cathedral, or with the imprint “A Paris chez Jean, a rue de Jean Beauvais”, as recorded by Scouloudi. The British Library copy is catalogued with a tentative date of 1665, presumably to accommodate the pre-fire St Paul's, but as the BnF gives Aveline's date of birth as 1656, that seems unlikely. Aveline set up business at le Petit-Pont in 1676, so the print must have been made after that date, possibly around 1686, when Aveline was granted a privilege to publish 115 views of royal residences (BnF). The second state has St Paul's re-engraved sporting a dome, intended to represent post-Fire, re-built London. Pierre Aveline … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, John
London: Printed for Samuel Crouch at the Corner Shop of Pope's Head Ally, 1676. First Edition. Early marbled sheepskin binding, subtle repairs to the spine. Octavo (pages 89 x 140 mm), collates: [14], 82, [2] pages: missing the initial license leaf (A1), otherwise complete. Bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection on the front pastedown; early ownership signatures to the front endpaper. Internally a neat and pleasing copy, with some offsetting to preliminary and rear pages; overall text block is clean and tight. With 4 appearances in the modern auction record and ESTC listing only 5 copies at institutions worldwide, this is truly a rare piece. "John Smith's The Art of Painting may perhaps lay claim to being the first painting manual in the English language" (Baty). A clockmaker by trade, Smith's book was designed in particular to assist in the decoration of clock and sundial faces. It also includes an important section on the restoration of oil paintings. Focused on the application of oil paints in a variety of circumstances, Smith also informs the reader that these "Oyl Colours [function] not only on SunDials but also all manner of Timber Work, whether Posts, Pales, Pallisadoes, Gates, Doors, Windows, Wainscotting, Border Boards for gardens or whatever else." Thus, the appeal of Smith's book was that it provided details on the creation of paint and paint colors to a wide variety of artisans, whose work needed to survive use and the elements. ESTC R37566.

Welsch (Velschius), Georg Hieronymus (ed.).
1676. Small 4to. (14), 137, (19) pp. With engr. frontispiece and 22 engr. plates by Melchior Haffner. Contemporary calf. First facsimile edition of any oriental manuscript. 16 of the 22 finely engraved plates show a Persian perpetual calendar with Ottoman Turkish "commentarius" and floral borders. Welsch had acquired the ms. from Christoph Weikmann's Kunstkammer in Ulm. The remaining six plates are concerned with Arabian astronomy: astrolabe, orrery, zodiac, circular table of Sundays and names of the months in various languages. - The calculation of this calendar is today attributed to the 9th-c. Persian mathematician Wafâ al Buzjâni (cf. BSB München; Humboldt-Universität Berlin). The predominant attribution to one Turkish Sheikh Wafâ had been disputed by Babinger as early as 1927. Abu'l-Wafâ al Buzjâni is regarded as "the last great representative of the mathematics-astronomy school that arose around the beginning of the ninth century, shortly after the founding of Baghdad" (DSB I, 39). His astronomic oeuvre is preserved merely in fragments. The calligraphic commentary, however, is Turkish and (according to Babinger) was prepared by a 17th-c. magistrate, 'Ajn-i 'Alî Mueddinzâde. - Welsch (1624-77) was a physician and "a researcher of the very first magnitude [...] while the works of this polymath were mainly dedicated to the Arabian and Persian sciences, he also has provided proof of his close study of Ottoman Turkish. In this connexion, his important 'Commentarius in Ruzname Naurus' must be cited" (cf. Babinger 1919). Welsch's "Dissertatio" (with Arabic typeface) is aimed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aylett Sammes
London: Printed by Tho.Roycroft, for the Author, 1676 A fair copy of Aylett Sammes' attempt to trace British history back to the Phoenicians. In contemporary full calf binding with 24 in text engravings (not including vignettes on titles), but lacking the double page map of Europe. Sammes, circa 1636-79, provides a master class in taking a theory based on an aspect of language and fitting everything else into it. The book is notable for the engravings which provide memorable imagery with some, for example The Wicker Man, being much reproduced. The binding has raised bands and title label to spine and some blind stamped decoration to the boards. The spine has leather loss to the bottom section, and slightly to the top and there is splitting at the front joint and wear to the rear joint. The boards, bar some corner wear, are in very good condition. Internally, the front endpaper and any blanks are absent. Contents: rubricated title and prelims 10pp; text with in-text and full page engravings and decorative initial capitals 582 pp; index 5pp with blank verso to final leaf. BURTON, Robert
1676. "The first psychiatric encyclopedia!" 'The Anatomy of Melancholy' by Robert Burton is one of the most famous works on the medical condition of melancholia, or clinical depression. Originally written in 1621, this book was composed with both medical and philosophical implications. Burton addresses cures and preventions but also the human emotion that comes with melancholy, both with the afflicted and those around them. Burton teases his audience and creates light of the disease in his preface by saying, "I write of melancholy by being buy to avoid melancholy." (Eventhough it is commonly known, Burton wrote this book in hopes of writing himself out of depression.) Burton discusses more than just melancholy in this folio text. He writes of digestion, geography of America, and...GOBLINS! So, while on the surface it appears as a medical text on melancholia, it serves as a book on many disciplines and philosophies. This book also happened to be one of Samuel Johnson's most favorite books. He had been quoted as saying that, "['Melancholy'] was the only book that ever took [me] out of bed two hours sooner that [I] wished to rise" (Works of Samuel Johnson, vol 8, p89) This eighth edition was the final edition of 'Melancholy' published in the 17th-century. It is described as "the first psychiatric encyclopedia, citing 500 medical authors" (Garrison-Morton). This fine printing includes an illustrated, engraved title page by Christoffel Le Bron with images representing the different side effects of melancholy including Superstition, Solitude, Love, Hypochondirasis, and Jealousy ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

1676. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare, early edition of Christopher Glaser's famous work "Treaty on Chemistry," which was first published in 1663. In his studies, writings, and research, Glaser discovered many different chemical elements, including the mineral Glaserite which was named after him. Glaser's life did end with controversy. Rumors stated that he was an accomplice in many notorious poisonings that were carried out by Madame de Brinvilliers. While the exact date of his death is unknown, it is presumed that the printing of this edition coincided with his passing. This book was one of the most important 17th-century chemistry textbooks published, and it was one of the first attempts to bring chemistry out the realms of alchemy and mysticism, which it had been so strictly relegated. Glaser describes chemical preparations, properties of compounds, and use of equipment. Many of the compounds discussed include salts and sulfurs, medicinal properties of minerals, and recipes for antibiotics. [Attributes: First Edition]

Second edition of "Epanaphoras..." a scarce work of great importance for the study of the main events of the History of Portugal and Brazil. The book is divided in five main "Epanaphora" parts entitled: "Tragica", "Politica", "Bélica", "Triunfante", and "Amorosa". The part "Triunfante" is completely dedicated to Brazil, and includes the Dutch /Portuguese Wars in South America, the restoration of the city of Pernambuco, the surrender of Recife, and so on. "Politica" details among others the restoration of Portugal from the Spanish rule and the movements of separation of Catalonia. The fourth part, "Belica", among other things describes the historical naval battle between the Dutch and the Spanish fleet during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), in which the author, Francisco de Melo, participated. The "Epanaphora Amorosa" narrates the discovery of island of Madeira. It accounts the legendary version in which the island was first discovered by Robert Machin, an English noble from the court of King Edward III of England, who supposedly shipwrecked on the island in 1344 after escaping from England with his lover Lady Anna D'Arfert. It also mentions the historical discovery of the archipelago by the Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco (1390-1471) and Bartolomeu Perestrelo (1395- 1457). The beautiful frontispiece is explained in an allegorical poem by Hendrik Schim on the verso of the half-title. More laudatory poems on The Hague and the author Jacob de Riemer (1676-1762) follow in the preliminaries of the first part by Caspar Barlaeus, Joannes Van Dam, Constantijn Huygens and Hendrik Schim. The main text starts with the foundation of the city, followed by descriptions of different buildings, including several churches and monasteries, the orphanage, schools and much more, most of them are shown in the engraved folding plates as well. The second part (volume 3) of 1739 contains the description of the government of The Hague and its organization.Binding worn, corners bumped and lacking the paper on the front side of volume three, but the bindings are structually sound.
