Franciso Molloy
Rome: 1676. The condition of this book is very good for its age. There is a library stamp on the top of the spine and also a very old inside cover label that indicates it was withdrawn from the Mpls. public library. On the back inside cover is a date stamp that says Aug 18 1902. The book has a little dust or dirt on the cover and on the pages when you examine it. To me it looks like handling wear on front cover and dust on the outside edge of the pages. The front inside page that is the cover photo if you look at it as a single page in the light you can see small holes in the page that reads Minneapolis Minnesota, on the back of that page is writing that look like it was use by the library for cataloging it for placement in the library. Very solid spine and pages, nothing is loose or falling apart. I purchased a couple of old boxes of book from a estate sale and this is one of the books that was in those boxes. It has taken me awhile to figure out what this one is all about because of its uniqueness. To start with it is not a language that I can read, so I have been trying to research this for a while. On eBay they have modern updated copies in English so that was of little help. When I googled it a lot of stuff comes up and I found boxes that are up for auction on some high-end fancy auction site. When I try to compare what they have and what I'm trying to sell they appear to be the same. I can't saw that this is a 1st edition for sure but it is the same as the ones I find in those auctions page for page. I can't tell you if this is the original cover to this book either. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anonymous but attributed to either Thomas Ady or N. Orchard. Leather spine, previous owner's markings, some foxing and discoloration, a few chips and tears, a loss to page vii-viii at the top which does harm the text. Some worming to the corner's of a few pages, the title page was repaired poorly by a previous owner with two pieces of clear tape, else in good condition. DU VAL, Pierre.
Paris, c.1676, Original outline colour. 410 x 530mm. A rare 'proof' printing of Du Val's map of Asia, engraved by François de Lépine (signed FD Lapointe) in 1664 and first published in Du Val's scarce atlas, 'Cartes de géoraphie', in 1667. However this is apparently an unfinished proof of the 'second' state, 1676, with the original huge island of 'Jesso' removed but without the engraving of the replacement 'Kamchatka' peninsula, leaving the coastline near Yupi unfinished. Korea is still an oval island rather than the corrected peninsula. The title has been updated with the 'Reveuë et augmenteé' and 'au coin de la Ruë de Harlay' added to the address and the date of 1644 removed and not replaced. The cartouche around the title has been heavily re-engraved. We have been unable to find another example of this state. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

AGRIPPAE, Henri Cornelius
London: J.C. for Samuel Speed, 1676. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare 1676 1st English printing of Henri Cornelius Agrippae. Agrippa was an early 16th-century scholar who specialized in occult writings. Many of his works dealt with dark magic and the practice of occult arts; however, it is known that he argued against the persecution of witches. One of his most important works was "Incertitudine" or "Declamation of Arts and Sciences" which was a satirical account of the disappointing state of science during the 1520s. It was an important contributor to skepticism and philosophers such as Montaigne, Descartes, and Goethe. According to Jones, this book is "one of the great classics of skeptical literature." "Incertitudine" covers a wide variety of occult topics including alchemy, astronomy, theurgy, magic rituals, summoning gods, discovering one's psyche, mysticism and the cabala, Abraxas stones and charms, general magic and natural magic, dreams and dream interpreting, dangers of witchcraft, phantasms and miracles, and much more. Agrippa's aim with this work was "to propose a cultural alternative, delineating a different philosophical approach, capable of forming a new intellectual élite, who would be seriously interested in the moral and religious progress of human community." (SEP) This English edition features changes and edits, most likely by James Sanford, which were completely foreign to Agrippa's original text. One such instance is that of Sanford referring to Gypsies as cattle - something not … [Click Below for Full Description]

Democritus Junior
London: Printed for Peter Parker at the Signe of the Legg in Cornhill, 1676. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Eight [Eighth] Edition of Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy, the final edition of the famous work, which was repeatedly revised by the author. Collates complete, with half title, engraved title page, index, and final advertisement leaf; [8], 46, [6], 434, [10] pp. First published in 1621, Burton's Anatomy is called by the DNB "one of the most fascinating books in literature." The title page is famously illustrated, from the third edition onward, with the effects of Melancholy, from Love, Jealousy, Hypochondria, Superstition, Mania, and Solitude. The tongue-in-cheek preface sets the tone for the rest of the charming, erudite tract, and Samuel Johnson is quoted in the DNB as saying that "it was the only book that ever took him out of his bed two hours sooner than he intended to rise." From Sterne's Tristram Shandy to Lamb's Essays, this piece of prose influenced and inspired a great deal of literature, and Burton's quiet genius and semiserious humor seemingly inform the modern English voice itself. Engraved headpieces, initials, and tailpieces. Previous owner's name on the half title, else no marks. Presumed eighteenth century Cambridge style binding; full calf with paneled boards, fleurons, and mottled center panel and borders. Extremities of the spine discreetly patched in leather by a conservator; surface wear to the spine and red leather label. (ESTC R10536. DNB III, 464-466).

VIGNIER (Benjamin).
Paris, Chez Charles de Sercy, 1676. in-12. (1f.blanc). 5ff. 120pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Chre Pierre Cailloue, A Rouen 1676, (10) 116pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, rare, illustrated with a leaflet portrait of Charles Stuart after Lamessin and a folding plate representing Boscobel, place where the … [Click Below for Full Description]
