Savary, Jacques.
Genf, Joh. Hermann Widerhold, 1676.. . [Click Below for Full Description]

This is the second issue, with a new title added to the sheets of the 1643 edition. The Archieratikon is the book of Orthodox Catholic rites for service conducted by bishops (the Hieratikon was for priests). The extensive commentary was the work of the theologian and anti-Jansenist polemicist Isaac Habert (ca. 1600-1668), doctor of the theological faculty of the Sorbonne, prédicateur ordinaire du Roi, and, after 1645, Bishop of Vabres. This monumental work of erudition, ?"the results of his readings in the manuscript euchologies [prayer books] of the Bibliothèque Royale ... ensured him fame [and] is an essential source for the history of Greek liturgy?" ERASMUS, Desiderius
1676. 144113 ERASMUS, Desiderius. Morias Enkomion [Greek] Stultitiae laus. [80], 336, [12] pp. Illustrated with 81 copper-engraved plates after Holbein. 8vo., 183 x 110 mm, bound in full French eighteenth-century red morocco, triple ruled fillet border, intricate gilt-tooled spine, a.e.g. Basel: Genathianis, 1676. |~||~||~||~|$7500.00 The First Edition of this important Renaissance work to include Hans Holbein's illustrations, engraved by Caspar Merian, with numerous representations of classical figures described in the narrative, as well as portraits of Erasmus, Holbein the Elder, and Holbein the Younger. Presented as a series of allegories, this satirical, often sardonic treatise on Catholic dogma and the corruption rampant in the Roman Catholic Church is a reflection of Erasmus's own feeling of disillusionment with the Church following a visit to Rome. Ending simply with the author's interpretation of true Christian values, this volume, translated into English as In Praise of Folly, served as an impetus for the Protestant Reformation. Binding in excellent condition. A clean, bright copy overall, with a few sections of the text slightly yellowed. Graesse II, 495. Brunet II, 1037.

MORDEN, Robert
1676. A rare playing card map. The Ten of Diamonds, with the suit in coloured stencil. Laid down slightly stained and lightly ceased, with a tiny amount of rubbing to one corner. Still a very good copy of one of the rarest of Cornish maps. Although published in several editions, few of the maps still survive due to their ephemera nature. Batten & Bennett, 15. Quixley, 19, ' Within a year of the appearance of Ogilby's road maps in 1675, Robert Morden produced a pack of geographical playing-cards of the 52 counties of England and Wales, and these were the first county maps to show roads, though of course the limitations of size meant that only a diagrammatic version of the roads could be depicted. [AUTOGRAPH]. D'ORLÉANS, Élisabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Lorraine.
A letter signed by Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans, Duchess of Lorraine (1676-1744), discussing her youngest daughter Anne Charlotte's election as Abbess of Remiremont (Vosges, France). Apparently the Duchess had recommended her daughter for the title of Abbess in a previous letter. Anne Charlotte, though, had not yet reached the required age of 30, and had not been a Canoness for at least six weeks. In the current letter her mother applies for exemption from these articles. The Duchess did not write in vain: stepping into the footsteps of her older sister Élisabeth Charlotte, Anne Charlotte was elected Abbess on 10 May 1738.In fine condition.

SPEED, J.
1676. Fine hand color; wear to bottom of centerfold, else fine condition. A very attractive, near-mint example. Speed's handsomely engraved work is one of the earliest English maps of the area and one of the first to demarcate the borders of colonial Virginia and Maryland. Just three years before the publication of Speed¿s map, Augustine Herrman had conducted the first thorough surveys of Maryland at the behest of Lord Baltimore. Speed¿s was one of the first maps to adopt this groundbreaking cartography. However, in general outline Speed still followed the prototype of Captain John Smith, who conducted the first European survey of Chesapeake Bay. Speed's map "is the last major derivative of the Smith map, and it is unique as an example of the transition from one basic prototype map to another. The delineation of the land area follows Smith while the toponymic prototype was the Herrman map of 1673." (Verner in Tooley, Mapping of America, p.170) A particularly important feature derived from Herrman by Speed is the boundary line (indicated by a double row of trees) between Virginia and Maryland on the Eastern Shore. English text on the verso contains extensive descriptions of Virginia and Maryland.

Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1676. Generally in fine condition.. Small folio, title-page in black and red with woodcut armorial device, engraved coat of arms at head of dedication; 3 lines of early annotation crossed through at end of advertisement; in a good binding of brown calf, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands. First edition: an excellent copy of this rare book, an important early description of the Chinese Empire based on direct experiences between the 1650s and 1670s. 'Written in Madrid in the first half of 1675 by a Dominican monk who had resided in China from 1658 until 1670, this work although sympathetic to the Chinese was anti-Jesuit and the Society of Jesus attempted to have it suppressed... [It] contains an accurate account of the Chinese empire, its customs and beliefs...' The book also describes visits to Macao, India, Mexico, the Philippines and elsewhere. 'There is a hostile survey of the Portuguese concession port of Macao...'(Lowendahl, China Illustrata Nova).Navarrete travelled as a missionary to the Philippines by way of Mexico, arriving in 1648. He taught theology at the Dominican University in Manila, then in 1657 left with a group of missionaries for China. He spent years learning the language, only to be prevented from preaching, along with the other missionaries, by the persecutions of 1665. Instead he began to write; in 1673 he was called to Rome to discuss the question of Chinese Rites. This problem had reached an acute stage in China, with the Jesuits on one side and the Dominicans and Franciscans on the other. Navarrete was highly resp … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALTON, Robert
Printed and Sold by Robert Walton, at ye Globes Compasses, just at the west end of St. Paul's-Church, [1676]., London, - England's Glory 430 by 550mm (17 by 21.75 inches). Hand-coloured engraved plan. Howgego 30. Detailed plan of the the City of London. The plan extends from Fleet Street in the west to the Tower of London in the east and from Finsbury Fields in the north to Bankside in the south. To the upper left and right is a list of public buildings, gates, bridges, and streets. The plan shows in detail the rebuilt City of London which the Great Fire had destroyed much of in 1666. One can clearly see the heart of what is now the financial district including Cheapside, Cornhill, Lombard Street, and Leadenhall Street, together with the Monument, St. Paul's, and the Tower of London. In the title, Walton is keen to stress the usefulness of the plan being, "a guide to strangers, and such as are not well acquainted herein to direct them from place to place". He goes on to write: "Divers faults yt are in ye former are in this amended". To which plan Walton was alluding is unclear; some have suggested that it was his: "Newest and Exactess Mapp of the most Famous Citties London.", of 1655 yet as this depicts a pre-Fire London it would seem unlikely. Most probably the plan is a revised state of an earlier, no longer extant, plan. This would also account for the rather haphazard placing of a large part of the explanatory text. The map can be reliably dated to 1676, as Walton advertised it for sale in the 'Term Catalogue' of May that year.Scale: 11 inches to 1 statute mile.

Francis Bacon, Francis Godwyn
London: W[illiam] G[odbid] for R Scot, T Basset [etc], 1676 Book. Illus. by Wenceslaus Hollar. Very Good. Leather Bound. 1st Edition. The 1676, third, and most complete edition of this collection of Bacon's shorter writings that includes several significant scientific works, notably The Natural and Experimental History of the Form of Hot Things and Of the Several Kinds of Motion. The folio volume is bound in seventeenth century calf with a blind fillet to the boards and a red morocco label to the spine of the book which has been invisibly relaid. The early ownership signature 'E libris Thome Kenyon 1692' appears on the first blank and an old collation note (complete) by the London bookdealers 'B Quaritch' is written in pencil to the inside of the lower cover. The text is indeed complete as called for, with the first Bacon portrait opposite the title page and the second by Hollar placed at the end of The Life of Bacon as is usual. This example of the book has the errata note at the foot of 1C2r still visible with the blank slip removed. Bacon's Resuscitatio went through several editions during this period and its reappearance is testimony to the writer's enduring influence in natural philosophy, politics and morals.
