SPEED, John (1552 - 1629)
London: Bassett & Chiswell, 1676. Single sheet (15 x 20 inches) Full margins showing the plate mark (slight browning to edge, ink smear margin, top left corner torn) A handsome uncolored county map of Suffolk; taken from the famous Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine by English cartographer John Speed. The plates were engraved by Jodocus Honius in 1610, in Amsterdam. This map of Suffolk is the best available of the county; and Speed's maps are highly sought after due to their high level of accuracy, detail, and craftsmanship. Suffolk is an East Anglican county of great historic origin in England. It has borders with Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Essex. The North Sea lies to its east. The county is depicted as low-lying - with few hills and largely flat, arable land. The significance of this county is reflected in the admirable decorations on the map; such as the cartouches, sailing ship, figures, and a compass rose held by cherubim. The inset town plan of Ipswich is elegantly bordered and flanked by the images of the Roman general, Petillius Cerealis, on the left and the Queen of the Iceni, Boadicea, on the right. Ipswich has been known to be an occupied land since the Saxon period; and its port has been one of Britain's most important for the whole of its history. The plan is annotated with letters to describe the significant roads and buildings of the town; guided by a legend. This intricate plan was mapped by John Speed himself, as indicated by his signature 'Scale of Pases'. The left and right sides of the map are dictated to the coat of arms. The right bares the … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John (1552-1629)
London: Bassett & Chiswell 1676 - Single sheet (15 x 20 inches) Full margins showing the plate mark (small quarter inch tear on lower left, slight edge browning). An elegant map depicting the royal county of Yorkshire, including part of Westmore Land, Lancashire, Lincolneshire, and the Germain Ocean (today's North Sea). The map was printed from copper plates engraved by Jodocus Hondius in his workshop in Amsterdam in 1610. The upper right-hand corner of this map bares a detailed coat of arms used by King Charles the First. As King, Charles bore the royal arms undifferenced: quarterly, I and IV grand-quarterly: azure three fleurs-de-lis Or (for France) and Gules three lions passant guardant in pale Or (for England); II Or a lion rampant within a tressure flory-counter-flory Gules (for Scotland); III Azure a harp Or stringed Argent (for Ireland). The compass rose alongside it provides us with another striking example of Hondius' detailed aesthetic. "Performed by John Speede and are to be sold by Thomas Bassett in Fleet Street and by Richard Chiswell in St. Paul's Churchyard". The county maps found in the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine were the first consistent attempt to show territorial divisions, but it was mainly Speed's town plans that were the major innovation and probably his greatest contribution to British cartography. Together, they formed the first printed collection of town plans of the British Isles and, for at least 50 of the 73 included in the Theatre, it was the first time these towns had been mapped. While being the first English atlas of the British … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willughby, Francis; John Ray (ed.)
London JOHN MARTYN 1676 - First edition. Folio (36.3 x 22.5 cm.), 2 folding letterpress tables, 77 engraved plates, lacking initial imprimatur leaf, browning to text leaves, title-leaf slightly frayed at fore-edge and with very small hole in centre, three plates with tears repaired, later vellum with arms tooled in blind on covers, a good example. "The Ornithologiæ libri tres (referred to as the Ornithology) is one of the first truly scientific ornithological texts. It was published four years after the death of Francis Willughby (1635–1672) by his friend and collaborator John Ray (1627–1705). These two natural historians had met at Trinity College Cambridge in the 1650s and spent time travelling around Britain and Europe collecting and observing nature. Previous works concerning birds typically contained information gleaned from earlier sources such as Aristotle and Pliny with extra comments by the author. These works would usually describe the birds, where they might be found, whether they were edible, if they had any medicinal value, and what their human traits and characteristics were (for example Wrens are viewed as brave while Finches are dim-witted). It was also not uncommon to find mythical and fabled birds such as the phoenix and griffin amongst the pages of such works. As the study of natural history progressed the standards of ornithological works improved but they still lacked sensible and coherent organisation. Birds tended to be grouped together by habitat and then by their actions. Walter Charleton's (1619–1707) system, explained in his Onomast … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRUGONI Francesco Fulvio.
Presso Combi, & La Noù, 1676. Opera completa in tre volumi. Cm.15,5x8,2. Pg.(20), 340; (VIII), 412; 360. … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURTON, Robert [1577-1640]
Oxford: Printed for Peter Parker, 1676. Pp. 4 p.l., 46, [6], 434, [16] table, [2] ad. Complete with half-title, elaborate engraved title in compartments, including portrait of the author, signed C. Le Blon, woodcut headpieces and initials. With rare final leaf listing "Books printed for and sold by Peter Parker". Bound in recent polished calf, plain sides with edges of boards tooled in gilt, spine divided into 6 gilt-ruled compartments between raised bands, each compartment with elaborate gilt corner pieces surrounding central gilt arabesque, morocco label, gilt. Old ink signature on upper margin of title, some light damp-staining to early leaves, but otherwise a very good copy in a superb period style binding. Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy was one of the most widely-read books of the seventeenth century. It was revered as much for its eloquence of style, as for its encyclopaedic learning on the subject of melancholy, a condition with which the author had a lifelong acquaintance. Dr. Johnson was a great admirer of Burton's work, praising it as "the only book that ever took him out of bed two hours sooner than he wished to rise". Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy was permeated with Burton's influence, but it was Charles Lamb's passionate devotion which did most to keep alive the memory of the "fantastic great old man" and his monumental work, a book that has been the constant companion of readers ever since. First published in quarto format in 1621, Burton's masterpiece was then reprinted several times in folio, the present Eighth Edition being the last of the 17th c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Burton
Peter Parker, 1676. Frontespizio inciso, diviso in scomparti con paesaggi, figure allegoriche e i ritratti di Democrito Abderita e Democrito Junior, pseudonimo dell'autore. In appendice "Books printed for and sold by Peter Parker, at the Legg and Star right against the Royal Exchange in Cornhill". Nella prefazione, ricca di humour, Democritus arriva a suggerire al lettore melanconico di non leggere il trattato per evitare un peggioramento delle sue condizioni: 'Yet one caution let me give by the way to my present or future reader, who is actually melancholy, that he read not the symptoms or prognostics in the following tract, lest by applying that which he reads to himself, aggravating, appropriating things generally spoken to his own per … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John (1552 - 1629)
London: Bassett & Chiswell 1676 - Single sheet (15 x 20 inches) Full margins showing the plate mark (slight browning to edge, foxing). An attractive uncolored 1676 edition map of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The map is a section of Speed's acclaimed Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius in his workshop in Amsterdam, this map is a prime example of the level of craft and detail found in the Atlas. The West Riding of Yorkshire is elaborately detailed, touching its borders with Lancashire, Darbyshire, East Riding, Lincolneshire, and North Riding. A title cartouche and royal shield of James I dominate the presentation; further accented by seraphim presenting the scale of miles and the description belonging to the Earls coat of arms; as well as two hawks holding the shield of Yorkshire. The town plan of Yorke fills the upper right corner. The town is depicted with a letter guide corresponding to the significant roads and building found within Yorke. It is noteworthy to mention this town plan was mapped by Speed himself, as indicated by the 'Scale of Pases". The map is edged with the coat of arms of ruling Earls and Dukes of the West Riding. The arms belong to great royal men descend from Kings. Yorkshire was a noble county, and the rulers represented this most ardently. They include those of Charles, the second son of King James; and Henry, the second son of King Henry VII. The county maps found in the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine were the first consistent attempt to show territorial divisions, but it was mainly Speed's town plans that w … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John (1552 - 1629)
London: Bassett & Chiswell, 1676. Single sheet (15 x 20 inches) Full margins showing the plate mark (watermark at middle top, slight browning and foxing to edge). A beautiful map showcasing the Isle of Wight, part of the county of Hampshire. The Isle is shown surrounded by the British Ocean, with a part of England at the map's left-hand corner. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius in his workshop in Amsterdam in 1610, this map is a prime example of the level of craft and detail found in the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. Hondius leaves no part of this stunning map uncovered; the British Ocean can be seen decorated with waves, ships, and sea monsters to make the best use of space. The Isle of Wight is elaborately decorated and filled with rolling hills, trees, and windmills. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them; those showing a 'Scale of Passes' being the places Speed had mapped himself. The map of Isle of Wight presents us with two such inset town plans. Southampton's bustling town plan includes its coat of arms; while Newport provides us with a more provincial cue with a shepherd and horse. The right-hand side of the map exhibits the crests of the Earls who reigned over the Isle of Wight since 1066. William FitzOsborne was given charge of Wight in 1066 by William the Conqueror. Richard [de Redvers] River, Earl of Devon, from 1155. Henry Beauchamp, King of Wight, is said to have been crowned King of the Isle of Wight in 1444 by Henry VI. The charge then passed to Richard Woodvill(e) in the late-1400s. "Describes by William White Gent. Augmen … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John (1552-1629).
John Sudbury & George Humble, London 1676 - Single sheet (15 x 20 inches, full margins showing the plate mark). A fine uncolored engraved map of Great Britain, stretching from the Scottish outer Hebrides in the north west to the coast of France in the south east. Each of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms each decorated with its coat-of-arms are clearly shown on the map. The map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius who is noted for his skills in decoration as demonstrated by the elaborate cartouche and compass rose this map bares. Two columns of vignettes flank the map on each side: the left shows the first king of each Saxon region; the right shows the conversion or their successors to Christianity - through violence, inspiration, debate and sermons. This map strikes a pleasing balance between the scientific techniques of the time and a historical artistic license. The map was part of the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale as part of Speeds 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain'. This well-known Atlas contained the first detailed maps of the provinces of Ireland, the first set of county maps consistently attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions, and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-a notable contribution to British topography. They were an immediate success: three new editions and issues of each appeared during Speed's lifetime, and a miniature version was first published about 1619-20. This particular map is a fine example of the array of illustrative features and cartographic detail for which Speed, a wel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bucholtz, Andreas Heinrich.
– Exlibris. – VD17 1:666694N u. 39:120198W; Dünnhaupt 66.2; Goed. III 248, 16, 2b.

SHAKESPEARE, William.
London: printed by Andr. Clark for J. Martyn and H. Herringman,, 1676. As it is now Acted at his Highness the Duke of York's Theatre. Quarto (203 x 143 mm), pp. [4] + 88. Collation: A2, B-M4. Recent brown roan period style, decorative gilt spine, red morocco label, gilt panelled sides, red speckled edges, marbled endpapers. Small tear (repaired) to lower corner of title touching one letter in imprint, pale discolouring from old wax stain on pp. 43-46, a few other skilful small repairs in gutter of a few leaves. Contemporary (?) marginal annotations at p. 85 (adding "aside" against a couple of lines for the King and Laertes, clealry showing a familiarity with the play). The true first Davenant edition and the sixth edition overall; there is another edition dated 1676 that Greg describes as a "close reprint... which may be some years later than its ostensible date". As manager of the Duke of York's theatre, Sir William Davenant (1606-1668) was in a unique position with regard to the staging of Shakespeare, as his father, John Davenant, had seen the play acted in Shakespeare's day: "Sir William's father, the devotee of Shakespeare, had probably left London just before the first performance of Hamlet at the Globe on Bankside; he would certainly have seen it at Oxford by 1603 (title-page, first quarto). Later on he no doubt told his young son about the production: thus William Davenant, the man mainly responsible for the return of Shakespeare's plays to the London stage at the Restoration, would have had the unique advantage of hearing a firsthand account of how Richard Burbage … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kuyper, Frans
Roterodami, 1676. The first edition of Spinoza's 1677 opus, Opera Posthuma(comprised of Præfationem, The Ethics, The Tractatus Politicus, The Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione, Epistolae, & ad eas responsiones, Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae.) Complete: [40], 614, [34], 112, [8]. Bound WITH: a scarce first edition of Frans Kuyper's Arcana Atheismi (1676) - his refutation of Spinoza's earlier Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (1670). Complete with errata. [16], 304. Contemporary vellum binding. Copious contemporary notes(library?) on the preliminary and title pages in Latin. Binding with usual rubbing, top edge dust stained with age, else a very nice, sound, and internally clean copy. Fine. Opera Posthuma features the first appearance of Ethics - Spinoza s critique of the traditional philosophical conceptions of God, humanity and the universe, and of the religions and the theological and moral beliefs grounded thereupon.  The book received, let's say, lukewarm reviews: A book which surpasses all others in godlessness and which endeavors to do away with all religion and set godlessness on the throne. It appears at auction not infrequently, but Arcana Atheismi is a ghost. This is the only copy to appear in any auction or sales records since 1860, and only 10 copies are found in libraries around the world. A true rarity of Spinoza related material. Frans Kuyper was a Dutch Socinian Christian and owner of a printing house in Amsterdam. He partook in the assault of Spinoza as an atheist in Arcana Atheismi. Spinoza s atheism was mainly deduced from his comments in the Tra … [Click Below for Full Description]

The standard work for some time. According to Sweet & Maxwell, Duke included fifty cases not elsewhere reported. It also gives specimens of pleadings and decrees. The most useful parts of the book are the fifth and sixth chapters which contain the selection of cases upon the statute'. [H.E.L. VI p.616].
