Guazzini, Sebastiano
1676. Scarce Treatise on the Roman Law of Confiscation Guazzini, Sebastiano. Tractatus De Confiscatione Bonorum, Hac Recenti Editione Lugdunensi, Infinitis Prope Mendis, Quibus Antea Scatebat, Expurgatus, & Nativo Candori Restitutus: Cum Summariis, Et Indicibus Accuratissimis. Lyons: Sumpt. Joannis Antonii Huguetan, & Soc., 1676. [iv], 134, [26] pp. Main text in parallel columns. Folio (13-1/2" x 9"). Contemporary limp vellum with thong ties, near-contemporary calligraphic title to spine. Spine somewhat darkened, light soiling and a few minor stains to covers. Title page with handsome large woodcut device printed in red and black, woodcut head and tail-pieces. Toning to text, occasional light browning and dampspotting. Small later signature near foot of title page, interior otherwise clean. A well-preserved item. * Sixth and final edition. First published in 1611, this was a well-regarded treatise on the appropriation, under legal authority, of private property to the state in Roman, canon and Italian civil law (i.e. confiscation). Little is known about Guazzini. The title page of our copy says he was an advocate and expert on criminal law associated with the Roman Curia. OCLC locates 4 copies in North American law libraries, one of this edition (at Harvard). This edition not in the British Museum Catalogue.

RIEMER, Jacob de.
1676. Nijhoff & V. Hattum 267. First and only edition of an extensive, thorough and lavishly illustrated work on the history and topography of the city of The Hague. The beautiful frontispiece is explained in an allegorical poem by Hendrik Schim on the verso of the half-title. More laudatory poems on The Hague and the author Jacob de Riemer (1676-1762) follow in the preliminaries of the first part by Caspar Barlaeus, Joannes Van Dam, Constantijn Huygens and Hendrik Schim. The main text starts with the foundation of the city, followed by descriptions of different buildings, including several churches and monasteries, the orphanage, schools and much more, most of them are shown in the engraved folding plates as well. The second part (volume 3) of 1739 contains the description of the government of The Hague and its organization.Binding worn, corners bumped and lacking the paper on the front side of volume three, but the bindings are structually sound. Text and plates with some occasional spots and a few wormholes, and some of the folding plates are reinforced with tape at the back; a good copy, wholly untrimmed.

Democritus Junior [Robert Burton
Printed for Peter Parker at the Signe of the Legg in Cornhill, 1676. Quarto. Full Leather. Eigth [Eighth] Edition, corrected and augmented by the Author. Eight [Eighth] Edition of Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy, the final edition of the famous work, which was repeatedly revised by the author. Collates complete, with half title, engraved title page, index, and final advertisement leaf; [8], 46, [6], 434, [10] pp. First published in 1621, Burton's Anatomy is called by the DNB "one of the most fascinating books in literature." The title page is famously illustrated, from the third edition onward, with the effects of Melancholy, from Love, Jealousy, Hypochondria, Superstition, Mania, and Solitude. The tongue-in-cheek preface sets the tone for the rest of the charming, erudite tract, and Samuel Johnson is quoted in the DNB as saying that "it was the only book that ever took him out of his bed two hours sooner than he intended to rise." From Sterne's Tristram Shandy to Lamb's Essays, this piece of prose influenced and inspired a great deal of literature, and Burton's quiet genius and semiserious humor seemingly inform the modern English voice itself. Engraved headpieces, initials, and tailpieces. Previous owner's name on the half title and A4; marginalia to p. 202; scotch tape repair to p. 216; minor worming to the top corner of parts of the textblock, causing slight loss to pp. 35-40; joint repair using Japanese tissue. THATCHER, Margaret.) SPEED, John.
1676. Copper engraving with hand colouring (later, probably Victorian), 38 x 50 cm, mounted and glazed within gilt wooden frame. Posthumous Margaret Thatcher printed library label pasted on reverse. Map with a couple of light creases; framed a bit worn at extremities. In good condition overall. Margaret Thatcher's own copy of John Speed's map of her native Lincolnshire, including Grantham, where she grew up. Speed's map was first published in 1611 in the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain, and was reprinted many times over the next two centuries - this 1676 printing can be distinguished by the Basset and Chiswell imprint (Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers, p. 84). Coincidentally, Thatcher appointed John Speed's descendent, Keith Speed (1934-2018), to the position of parliamentary undersecretary of state for defence in 1979; she sacked him two years later when he opposed her defence cuts. The print remained in Thatcher's possession until her death in 2013, and has since been acquired directly from her estate.

Speed, John
Bassett & Chiswell, London, 1676. Rare hand-colored engraved map of the Roman Empire showing the areas labeled Germanie, the Land of Sarmatia, Marmarica, Part of Arabia, Spain, Ireland, Grecia, France, Italy, and Partes of Africa; the Middle Land Sea, the Euxine Sea, the Capsian Sea and the Sea of Cantabria among others. The map is bordered by illustrations of the cities of Geneva, Rome, Jerusalem, Venice and Constantinople, and Alexandria, and figures displaying the customary dress of Italians, Egyptians, Turks, and Spaniards with their wives. With a detailed declaration of the beginning, increase and height of the Roman Empire. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 30 inches by 26 inches. An exceptional presentation. English cartographer and historian John Speed was, alongside Christopher Saxton, one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period. Speed drew historical maps in 1601 and 1627 depicting the invasion of England and Ireland, depictions of the English Middle Ages, along with those depicting the current time, with rough originals but appealing, colorful final versions of his maps. Although he probably had access to historical sources that are now lost to us (he certainly used the work of Saxton and Norden), his work as a historian is now considered secondary in importance to his map-making, of which his most important contribution is probably his town plans, many of which provide the first visual record of the British towns they depict. CARNATIONS -
Paris: Charles de Sercy, 1676. 12mo (148 x 85 mm). [4], 162, [2] pp. Publisher's woodcut device on title, woodcut head- and tailpiece and opening initial. Contemporary parchment over flexible pasteboards. Front pastedown unglued showing liners of printed waste. Dampstain to first few leaves, foxing and softening, corners creased, binding soiled and stiffened. Provenance: from the library of the English Benedictines in Paris (St. Edmund's Priory), late 17th or 18th-century inscription on title, Benedictorum anglorum S[anc]ti Edmundi Parisiis. *** first edition of a guide to carnations and pinks, evidently by a gardener or nurseryman (whether a gentleman or a professional gardener is not known); the book, which went into several editions, helped spread the vogue for the flower in France, and is still respected. In the preface, the anonymous author claims that he intends his book for other fleuristes, with no commercial interests but purely in order to share the beauty of the flower. Testifying to the breadth of his experience, the first part is a detailed technical guide to cultivation, with much precise advice on layering (marcottage), cultivation in a pot versus a greenhouse, required watering and sun exposure, flowering, and protection from blights and insects (especially earwigs and ants). The second part, starting with chapter XVII on p. 89, is a more properly aesthetic guide to the flower, with a general assessment of its lovely qualities, and a detailed list of well over 200 different carnation varieties, organized alphabetically under each color: violet, red, crimson, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: 1676. The condition of this book is very good for its age. There is a library stamp on the top of the spine and also a very old inside cover label that indicates it was withdrawn from the Mpls. public library. On the back inside cover is a date stamp that says Aug 18 1902. The book has a little dust or dirt on the cover and on the pages when you examine it. To me it looks like handling wear on front cover and dust on the outside edge of the pages. The front inside page that is the cover photo if you look at it as a single page in the light you can see small holes in the page that reads Minneapolis Minnesota, on the back of that page is writing that look like it was use by the library for cataloging it for placement in the library. Very solid spine and pages, nothing is loose or falling apart. I purchased a couple of old boxes of book from a estate sale and this is one of the books that was in those boxes. It has taken me awhile to figure out what this one is all about because of its uniqueness. To start with it is not a language that I can read, so I have been trying to research this for a while. On eBay they have modern updated copies in English so that was of little help. When I googled it a lot of stuff comes up and I found boxes that are up for auction on some high-end fancy auction site. When I try to compare what they have and what I'm trying to sell they appear to be the same. I can't saw that this is a 1st edition for sure but it is the same as the ones I find in those auctions page for page. I can't tell you if this is the original cover to this book either. … [Click Below for Full Description]
