CATHOLIC CHURCH. Liturgy and Ritual].
Lisbon, Excudebat Ioannes a Costa [João da Costa], 1676.. 4°, disbound. Large woodcut arms on the title page (see below). Woodcut tailpiece of a bowl of fruit. Text on pp. 3-10 in two columns. Some mild dampstains. In good condition. Eleven lines in early ink manuscript on final blank leaf. 11 pp. *** The Prefatio (p. [2]) gives a brief history of this officium; it includes the date 1587. Page 11 includes the date 1592. The vivid but rather crude coat of arms on the title page includes the arms of Portugal and the lance wound of Christ (?), with a crest of a cross and the crown of thorns. The inscription around the edge mentions St. Francis, Portugal, and the Franciscans. Much of it is difficult to decipher, since the lettering gets progressively more cramped. St. Catharine of Bologna (1413-1463) was beatified in 1524 and canonized in 1712. Her major work, Treatise on the Seven Spiritual Weapons Necessary for Spiritual Warfare (Le Sette Armi Spirituali), was important in the dissemination of vernacular mysticism in the early modern period. First printed in 1475, it went through dozens of editions and was translated to Latin, French, Portuguese, English, Spanish, and German. *** Not in Arouca; cf. O36, an officium for St. Catherine of Bologna printed in Lisbon, 1669 by Domingo Carneiro. Not located in Porbase, which lists the officium for the saint printed in Lisbon, 1669 by Domingo Carneiro (two copies, one lacking the title page and "perfuradas"). Not located in Copac.

Gesigneerd middenonder: 'ROMANUS DE HOOGHE'. [EN] Funeral procession of the deceased Wirtz Hamburg in March 1676. Above left the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. Underneath the portrait of Wirtz in an oval, on the bottom on the right a list of the participants in the procession. Muller and Van Stolk date the picture wrongly on 24 October 1676. Wirtz distinguished himself in the war between Sweden and Poland, and was knighted by the Swedish king as Baron Ornholm. Later, he went into the service of the Republic of the United Netherlands until he resigned early in 1674. Two years later he died in Hamburg and three years after his death, his corpse was reburied in Amsterdam in the Oude Kerk (NNBW I, 1581). Signed on the bottom under the epigraph:'ROMANUS DE HOOGHE'

Overlapping vellum. 13 cm (Ref: Hoffmann 2,193; Willems 1894, Bergman 1894, Rahir 2565; Ebert 750: 'A new and good recension'; Graesse 1,154) (Details: 6 thongs laced through cover; edges dyed blue, woodcut printer's mark on title; Greek text with facing Latin translation; at the end of each chapter the commentary) (Condition: Frontispiece dustsoiled) (Note: Antoninus Liberalis was an ancient Greek grammarian/mythographer, probably of Antonine times (AD 100 and 200). His only surviving work, the 'Metamorphoseon synagoge', (collection of metamorphoses) survives in a single manuscript of the later ninth century, now in the Palatine Library in Heidelberg; it contains 41 briefly summarised tales about mythical metamorphoses effected by offended deities, unique in that they are couched in prose, not verse. Many of the transformations in this compilation are found nowhere else, and some may simply be inventions of Antoninus. The manner of the narrative is a laconic and conversational prose. (Source Wikipedia). The German philologist Wilhelm Xylander (Holzmann), 1532-1576, was professor of Greek at Heidelberg. He published the editio princeps of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (1558), and of Antoninus Liberalis in 1568. 'He made good use of the MSS accessible to him, and also gave proof of a singular acumen in the emendation of texts'. (Sandys 2,270). PLUTARCH NORTH Thomas
1676. PLUTARCH. The Lives Of The Noble Grecians and RomansÂ… BOUND WITH: Prosopographia: Or, Some Select Pourtraitures and Lives of Ancient and Modern Illustrious Personages. Cambridge: Printed by John Hayes, 1676. Thick folio, modern full tan speckled calf, raised bands, brown morocco spine labels. $2500.Expanded and highly desirable sixth edition of the first English translation of PlutarchÂ’s Lives, one of the most influential works of the Elizabethan era and a major Shakespeare source. With 25 “Eminent Persons of Ancient and latter times” by Thevet—five of which are new to this edition, including Christopher Columbus and Hernando Cortéz.""The Lives are works of great learning and research, and Plutarch is careful to quote his authorities, whose number indicates a formidable amount of readingÂ… Early translated, by Amyot into French and by North into English, the influence of Plutarch's method has been constantly manifest in the biographies of the modern great and in the authors who have been inspired by it. Shakespeare relied almost exclusively on Plutarch for the historical background of ancient Rome"" (PMM 48). ""North dedicated the book to Queen Elizabeth, and it was one of the most popular of her day. It is written throughout in admirably vivid and robust prose. But it is as Shakespeare's storehouse of classical learning that it presents itself in its most interesting aspect. To it (it is not too much to say) we owe the existence of the plays of Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra, while A Midsummer Night's Dream, Pericles and Timon of Athens are … [Click Below for Full Description]
