The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain. T Bassett & R Chiswell. 1676. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Sheet size: 395 x 510 mm. Mount size: 590 x 705 mm Very good condition. A beautiful map of Kent based on the work of Philip Symonson. Insets of the cathedral cities of Canterbury and Rochester, and seven coats of arms. Due to Kent's extensive coastline, and proximity to France and the Netherlands, it had unrivalled advantages for trade, thus making its defence imperative. Dover Castle had long been a linchpin in the defence of the realm, but most other castles in Kent were made redundant when a series of modern artillery forts like Deal and Walmer were constructed in the 1540's by Henry VIII. These were to protect the anchorage of the Downs which the Navy had recently taken to using. The adoption of other fleet-anchorages along the Thames and the Medway, and the establishment of dockyards at Deptford and Woolwich by Henry VIII, and at Chatham by Elizabeth I, turned Kent into the best defended area in the kingdom throughout the Tudor and early Stuart periods. AUGUSTIN D'HIPPONE.
A Paris, chez la Veuve Jean Camusat et Pierre le Petit, 1676. - in-8. 4 feuillets. 810 pages. 19 feuillets. (20x13,5cm). Exemplaire assez frais.

BURTON, Robert (1577-1640)
London: (R. W. for) Peter Parker, 1676. Eighth Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio (322 x 198 mm). [8], 46, [6], 434, [8] (of [10]) pages, including half-title and full-page engraved title with author portrait in oval and vignettes illustrating the characteristics of melancholy (including superstition, solitude, hypochondria and mania) and two herbs (borage and hellebore); index lacking penultimate leaf. Near contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, ruled in gilt, spine stamped with device to five compartments and gilt lettering ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY BURTON, marbled endpapers; (early catalogue entry pasted to front flyleaf contents browned, margins trimmed not affecting text, half-title repaired at fore-edge at upper margin, final index leaf remargined and possibly supplied from another copy). Robert Burton published five revised and expanded editions of The Anatomy of Melancholy during his lifetime. This copy is the named Eighth Edition, and notably was printed in the last year before the book went out of print, not appearing again until 1800. The Anatomy of Melancholy is an especially lengthy book, and the text is divided into three major sections plus an introduction. The first section focuses on the causes and symptoms of “common” melancholies, while the second section deals with cures for melancholy, and the third section explores more complex and arcane melancholies, including the melancholy of lovers and all varieties of religious melancholies. In novel approach, Burton’s Melancholy focused sharply on the self, unlike the writings of his contemporary Bacon. In … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sammes, Aylett
London: Printed by Tho. Roycroft, for the Author, 1676. First edition. Hardcover. g. Folio. [10], 582, [6]pp. Modern 3/4 crushed morocco over black cloth with title laid on spine. Vignette. Title page in red and black lettering. Decorative headpieces and initials. Sammes' elaborate "Britannia Antiqua Illustrata, or the Antiquities of Ancient Britain derived from the Phœnicians" (London, 1676) only appeared as Vol. I. It was licensed by Roger L'Estrange in March 1675, and dedicated to Heneage Lord Finch, baron of Daventry and Lord High Chancellor of England. This interesting work brings down the narrative of British history to the conversion of Kent. It deals with the Roman period, but its main thesis is of the Phœnician derivation of the language. It reproduces ancient documents, such as the Laws of King Ina. The views derived from Strabo and the work of John Twyne. Sammes gave etymological reasons connecting Phoenician with Welsh, but did not accept the descent of the Cymry from Gomer. While the specific historical theories brought forward by Sammes were discounted by his contemporaries, this book was a contribution to a number of debates of the time, and its effect on iconography was major. The representations of Celtic druids had been developed from beginnings in Conrad Celtes and the Jani Anglorum (1610) of John Selden. Inigo Jones had made a druid stage design (1638) for Lodowick Carlell's The Passionate Lovers, drawing on earlier pageant representations of Ancient Britons, as a Wild Man. Further iconographic sources drawn upon were of the Green Man and h … [Click Below for Full Description]
