Another copy of the same work is also listed on eBay at reduced price due to different condition: Second edition of "Epanaphoras..." a scarce work of great importance for the study of the main events of the History of Portugal and Brazil. The book is divided in five main "Epanaphora" parts entitled: "Tragica", "Politica", "Bélica", "Triunfante", and "Amorosa". The part "Triunfante" is completely dedicated to Brazil, and includes the Dutch /Portuguese Wars in South America, the restoration of the city of Pernambuco, the surrender of Recife, and so on. "Politica" details among others the restoration of Portugal from the Spanish rule and the movements of separation of Catalonia. The fourth part, "Belica", among other things describes the historical naval battle between the Dutch and the Spanish fleet during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), in which the author, Francisco de Melo, participated. The "Epanaphora Amorosa" narrates the discovery of island of Madeira. It accounts the legendary version in which the island was first discovered by Robert Machin, an English noble from the court of King Edward III of England, who supposedly shipwrecked on the island in 1344 after escaping from England with his lover Lady Anna D'Arfert. It also mentions the historical discovery of the archipelago by the Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco (1390-1471) and Bartolomeu Perestrelo (1395- 1457). Author: Francisco Manuel de Mello (1608-1666) Title: EPANAPHORAS DE VARIA HISTORIA PORTUGUEZA....Em cinco Relaçoens de Sucessos pertencentes a este Reyno, que contem negócios públicos, políticos, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEED, John (1552 - 1629)
London: Bassett & Chiswell, 1676. Single sheet (15 x 20 inches) Full margins showing the plate mark (slight browning to edge) This stunningly detailed, uncolored edition of Glamorgen Shyre; taken from John Speed's world famous Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. These 17th century plates were engraved in Amsterdam by the great Dutch mapmaker Jodocus Hondius and exhibit the highest level of craftsmanship and artistic embellishment. Although an initially rural and pastoral county, Glamorgen soon became defined as a land highly concentrated with castles and abbeys - demonstrated by example of Landaffe and Cardyfe in this map. The historic county stretches its borders with Carmardenshire, Breknokshire, and Mounmethshire. The bottom portion of the map represents the Bristol Channel. A striking title hangs gallantly over the map, but there are certain details to this map which make it especially shine over other counties. Elegant cartouches with young seraphim hold the cardinal direction of West and East; while the royal coats of arms are presented in the Bristol Channel by a young nymph riding a sea creature. These curious details set this map apart. The town plans of Cardyfe and Landaffe are inset nearly symmetrically on opposing corners of the map. They both house the appropriate coat of arms and compass roses. Cardyfe is marked with more details, such as the significant roads and buildings. A key corresponds to the letters. Landaffe, a nobler city, is illustrated with its castle, walls, and township. In the case of this map, the town plan of Cardyfe was also mapped ou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cfr. Cioranescu,I, p. 553. Testo con uniforme lieve arrossatura, ma certamente un buon esemplare con barbe.

Pardo, Francisco
Mexico: Por la Uiuda de Bernardo Calderon, 1676. [33],281,[1],xvi,[20] leaves. Quarto. Contemporary vellum, remnants of fore-edge ties, manuscript spine title. Slight wear to vellum, detaching from text block. Some worming, occasionally affecting printed marginal annotations. Four leaves detached. Light tanning and foxing. Good. A quite scarce biography of the "Lily of Puebla," Sister Maria de Jesus de Tomelin, published by a 17th-century Mexican woman printer. The nun, a part of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception in Puebla, was a venerated early female religious figure in the city, and her beatification was sought by Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. The Archbishop of Mexico began to seek her sainthood in 1661, and this extensive account of her life, though published fifteen years later, was likely a part of that effort. Although she died in 1637, she was not made a saint until nearly a century and a half later, in 1785. The work was published by the widow of Bernardo Calderon, Paula de Benavides. Calderon himself printed in Mexico from 1631 to 1641, and members of his family continued prominently in Mexican printing until the mid-18th century. His widow enjoyed considerably more longevity than Calderon in the business, publishing books with her imprint from his death in 1641 until hers in 1684. OCLC locates ten copies, of which five are in the United States; only two copies have ever appeared at auction. A significant and detailed biography of a 17th-century Mexican female saint. GUILLET DE SAINT-GEORGE, George, pen name Sieur de La Guilletière].
Paris, Estienne Michallet, 1676. Small 8vo. Contemporary full vellum; pp. [xxiv], 456, [34], folding engraved plate of a Greek amphitheatre and one folding engraved plan of Athens, printed on thin paper, which is frequently missing; lower cover a little spotted, occasional spotting and light even toning, final leaf with marginal paperflaw touching the last line of privilege (dated January, 1675). Celebrated in the 17th and 18th centuries this is a scarce work on Athens and Greece under Ottoman rule, by a French scholar, writer and actor, who pretended that his brother had visited Athens and sent him letters. However, Guiollet was a clever compiler of first-hand information supplied by Giraud, the French consul in Athens and the plan by the Capuchin monks who resided in the city. 'Certainly Guillet's account did contain information on the contemporary state of the city and he very much emphasized the need to compare the ancient and modern cultures' (Blackmer). BURTON, Robert
1676 Burton Anatomy of Melancholy Depression Philosophy Psychiatry Encyclopedia “The first psychiatric encyclopedia!” ‘The Anatomy of Melancholy’ by Robert Burton is one of the most famous works on the medical condition of melancholia, or clinical depression. Originally written in 1621, this book was composed with both medical and philosophical implications. Burton addresses cures and preventions but also the human emotion that comes with melancholy, both with the afflicted and those around them. Burton teases his audience and creates light of the disease in his preface by saying, “I write of melancholy by being busy to avoid melancholy.” (Even though it is commonly known, Burton wrote this book in hopes of writing himself out of depression.) Burton discusses more than just melancholy in this folio text. He writes of digestion, geography of America, and GOBLINS! So, while on the surface it appears as a medical text on melancholia, it serves as a book on many disciplines and philosophies. This book also happened to be one of Samuel Johnson’s most favorite books. He had been quoted as saying that, “[‘Melancholy’] was the only book that ever took [me] out of bed two hours sooner that [I] wished to rise” (Works of Samuel Johnson, vol 8, p89) This eighth edition was the final edition of ‘Melancholy’ published in the 17th-century. It is described as “the first psychiatric encyclopedia, citing 500 medical authors” (Garrison-Morton). This fine printing includes an illustrated, engraved title page by Christoffel Le Bron with images representing the different side effects of melancho … [Click Below for Full Description]

La Tour d Auvergne, Louis Charles de, Prince de Turenne.French baroque symbolism & calligraphy The martial exploits of Louis XIV
[Paris, 1676]. Folio. 15 engraved plates on 8 leaves, including engraved title, dedication, engraved portrait of Louis XIV by L. Cossin after Sevin, and 12 engraved plates celebrating the king s triumphs with 36 aphorisms and 48 emblematic devices of which 28 are by Claude François Menestrier. Red morocco. A sumptuously illustrated demonstration of the art of allegory depicting the campaigns of Henri de la Tour d Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne (1611-75) on behalf of, and latterly with, Louis XIV. The suite of plates is issued by the Jesuit College, and comprises the title, set on an ermine mantle placed before the arms and symbols of the sun king; it is signed by the artist (Pierre-Paul Sevin), the engraver (L. Cossin), and calligrapher (René Michault). The text, a treatise on rhetoric by Turenne s nephew, is dedicated to the martial exploits of Louis XIV. The epistolatory dedication by P. de La Rue is followed by the royal dedicatory portrait within allegorical surround and 12 plates (on 6 leaves) each containing three philosophical maxims by P. Fr. Nepveu bordered by richly ornate engravings: these comprise a head-piece vignette illustrating and naming the campaign, a tail-piece in cartouche or tablet with brief summary of the main events of the action; either side are 2 emblematic devices (in all 48, of which 28 are attributed by Praz to Claude-François Menestrier). Linking the illustrations are an extraordinarily inventive array of pagan and Christian figures, mythical creatures, symbolic instruments, grotesque ornaments, and floral and foliar decoration. ¶ Caillet 2201 (pour d'autres éditions) - Dorbon 1873/75 (pour d'autres éditions) - Duveen p.251 pour l'e.o.

FIRST PRINTING, WITH FOUR-LINE IMPRINT. The 1676 "Players' Quarto" is the sixth overall quarto printing of Hamlet (Q6) and the first printing since the Restoration. It is the first edition to list the players (including two women, who in the Restoration were allowed to appear on the stage for the first time) and the first edition to divide the play into acts. Also, known as the first Davenant edition, the text was edited and prepared by William Davenant, "the man mainly responsible for the return of Shakespeare's plays to the London stage at the Restoration" (DNB). Q6 is particularly significant for our understanding of how Shakespeare was received during the Restoration, for the whole text is included, but with indications of which lines were omitted during performances."As has been pointed out, 'Davenant's importance as a champion of continuity can hardly be overestimated. When he came to direct Shakespeare plays and adaptations at his own theatre in Lincoln's Inn Field, he stood at the centre of the transmission of acting traditions going back to Elizabethan days.' It may then by of considerable interest that we have specific information about Davenant's Restoration abridgement of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The tragedy was among the few plays that were not 'improved'... Hamlet remained Hamlet, both in performance and in print..."Davenant's version survives in the players' quarto of 1676, whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARTINELLI, Agostino.
In Roma: Per Nicolò Angelo Tinassi, 1676. FIRST EDITION. "This rare work was written by a Ferrara engineer who spent his career in Rome and was responsible for some of the bridge repairs as well as for some major river works. It opens with an account of the two bridges at Narni, of which the Roman one, originally carrying the Via Flaminia over the Nera, was in ruins. Martinelli urges its restoration and also discusses ways of the protecting the piers of the later mediaeval bridge from scour, proposing a scheme to divert the main force of the river through a straight cut. The other Nera bridges described here include the Ponte Paolo (or Romano) and the Ponte Detto at Terni, both of which were single-span structures presenting less of an impediment to the flow of the water. There is also an account of the Velino falls or Cascata delle Mormora east of Terni, created by Curtius Dentatus in 272 BC which resulted from his canal which drained off the waters of the Lago di Pie di Luco. The Ponte Felice over the Tiber had repeatedly given trouble as its foundations were scoured out and its embankments eroded. Here Martinelli discusses the structural repairs he carried out, illustrating and describing the iron clamps closing the cracks in the second arch. Also of very great interest is his account of the extensive groynes and the defensive wall he built in 1671-5 upstream of the bridge where the waters of the Fosso di Magliano join the Tiber. He gives quantities and dimensions of materials used and shows how the length and shape of these training works evolved during the course of c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plutarch of Cheronaea [Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus] / [North, Thomas / Shakespeare / Johannes Gutenberg]
Cambridge, John Hayes for George Sawbridge, 1676. Folio. Engraved Frontispiece, Titlepage in red and black, [VIII] 8, 1030, 2, 20 pages / Prosopographia:[VI], 91,[XXXVI] pages. Original 18th century leather-binding with five raised bands and the original spinelabel. The binding with stronger signs of wear but firm and original. Interior in very good condition with only very mild signs of foxing. Very Rare ! Sir Thomas North (1535-1604) was an English justice of the peace, military officer and translator. His translation into English of Plutarch's Parallel Lives is notable for being a source text used by William Shakespeare for several of his plays. The first edition of his translation of Plutarch, from the French of Jacques Amyot, appeared in 1579. The first edition was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, and was followed by another edition in 1595, containing fresh Lives. A third edition of his Plutarch was published, in 1603, with more translated Parallel Lives, and a supplement of other translated biographies. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, ″ it is almost impossible to overestimate the influence of North's vigorous English on contemporary writers, and some critics have called him the first master of English prose." The Lives translation formed the source from which Shakespeare drew the materials for his Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra. It is in the last-named play that he follows the Lives most closely, whole speeches being taken directly from North.
