BEROEMDE WANDKAART VAN LEIDEN"Lugdunum Batavorum 1675.' De befaamde zgn. 'Kleine Hagen". [Click Below for Full Description]

Pérez, Manuel.
The first work in this volume is a handbook for priests with Nahuatl-speakers as parishioners; it contains a summary of "the five sacraments that ministers of the gospel administer here in America. With all the moral cases that occur among Indians." Principally in Spanish, it has the prescribed responses of the parishioners in Nahuatl. The second work is a Nahuatl grammar, this being its only colonial-era edition. Pérez was a professor of Nahuatl at the Royal University of Mexico and one of the country's leading experts in the period 1675-1725. Provenance: On the front fly-leaf the late 18th-century ownership inscription of Lic. Manuel Villa telling => where he purchased the book and its cost and imploring anyone who borrows it to return it; early 19th-century ownership signature on title-page of Jose Mariano Perdomo; 20th-century blind pressure-stamp on title-page of Sotomayor Vaqueiro. At the rear of the volume is a manuscript note in a clear hand stating the Bachiller Jose Mariano Perdomo had completed two years of study of theology.

OGILBY, John.
1675 - London, c.1675, second state. Coloured. 330 x 445mm. The complete route, with a spur from New Malton to Scarborough. Plate 100 from Ogilby's 'Britannia', the first national road-atlas of any country in Western Europe. It was composed of maps of seventy-three major roads and cross-roads, presented as trompe-l'œil scrolls, each with a decorative title cartouche, this being one of the four plates with the way-wiser (surveyor's wheel). It was the first English atlas on a uniform scale, at one inch to a mile, and the 'mile' Ogilby used became the national standard, the statute mile of 1,760 yards. Ogilby claimed that 26,600 miles of roads were surveyed in the course of preparing the atlas, on foot using the surveyor's wheel depicted in the cartouche, but only about 7,500 were actually depicted in print. It was only after the 'Britannia' that roads started being shown on county maps. Second state, with plate number bottom right, in this case uninked.

Leopold I (Holy Roman Emperor, 1640-1705); Gisbert von Hemm und Hemmstein
Volpersdorf. 1675. Hardcover. Very Good. A stunning patent of nobility, c. 1675. Housed in a tin stamped hinged case measuring approx. 13 x 12 inches (33 x 30 cm), bound in light green silk, containing 22 pp of German calligraphy or court hand on vellum, with one fine vividly colored miniature (hand painted plate) showing the coat of arms with allegorical background, with the signature of Leopold I at the end of the document (and signed as well by two other clerks/officials) and with a turned wooden 'bowl' with lid attached by a brocade cord, the underside of the lid having the red wax elaborate seal of the Holy Roman Emperor. The Von der Hemm und Hemmstein (also called Hemb and Hembstein) was originally a Dutch family with ties to Ferdinand II -- one of the inlaws was the king's personal physician. Gisbert von Hemm und Hemmstein took over land in Volpersdorf near Glatz and became a baron, according to some genealogical records, in 1676, and in others 1668, and died soon thereafter in 1679, in Niedersteine, now known as Scinawka Dolna in the Lower Silesia region of Poland near Klodzko. The v.d. Hemm und Hemmstein family was contentious and Gisbert had brothers who contested estates, began rivalries and engaged in minor skirmishes. One of the brothers was known (in English translation) as the Notorious Gamecock. Some fading to the silk, contents fine, light wear to tin case including a broken hinge.

ALLARD, Carel (1648-1709) after Egbert Van HEEMSKERK (1645-1704)
Amsterdam: Published by Carel Allard, 1675. Engraving. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Light crease through center where it has been folded. Skillfully repaired tear on bottom margin. Bottom right corner has been reattached. A number of tiny tear on upper edge of sheet. Image size: 14 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches. This fascinating, satirical print of a Quakers' meeting was executed by Carel Allard after the celebrated Dutch genre painter Egbert van Heemskerk, the younger. The Heemskerk family of painters, originally from Haarlem, settled in London in the 1670s where they garnered a reputation for fine genre scenes in the Dutch manner. Egbert was the pupil of Pieter Grebbers for a short period of time but he was influenced more by his father, whose style and subject matter he imitated in his paintings. Heemskert continued the Dutch tradition of peasant paintings but he had a particular penchant for humorous social scenes, such as this representation of a Quaker meeting house. The cause for mirth here would not be as apparent to modern audiences as it was in the 17th century when a woman preaching seemed to many people a perfect absurdity. The dog in the lower right peeing on a stern female listener's skirt emphasizes the artist's point of view. The caption poem is given in Dutch and English. The Society of Friends originated in England under George Fox and spread to the Netherlands during the mid 17th century, a period during which Amsterdam gained its lasting reputation for religious tolerance. [Losa, Francisco]
[No place listed:: No publisher given] , 1675. Second edition. Small 8vo, pp [56], 232. The first English, according to Palau (142535 note), was printed in Paris in 1638: he mentions this (anonymous) translation as well, but his collation is so far off that it is unlikely he had seen a copy. Perhaps the translator of this was an English Jesuit; the lack of any notice about the printer and place of publication is easily explained by the anti-Catholic environment in England at the time, and like the first edition it may have been printed abroad. The author was a hermit and companion of Gregorio Lopez "for many years", as he says in the preface. Lopez himself was of Spanish birth, came to Mexico as a young man, and lived the hermit's life for many years. His birth and family connections are unknown, but he was well-educated and had a knowledge of medicine; it was even rumored that he was the illegitimate son of the king of Spain. His knowledge of medicine he put to good use among the Indian villages surrounding his various hermitages, such that the natives whom he served came to look upon him as a great curandero -- some even as a brujo, which at one point in his life forced him to move into conventual life with the local Dominicans. He authored two widely used medical manuals, designed especially for use in the New World, the medicines being drawn from native plant resources. His sanctity was recognized by the Vatican, which confirmed him as "blessed". The French translation of Losa's biography was done by the great Port-Royalist Arnauld d'Andilly. Lacking front free end pape … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jesus, Diego de
Manila, 1675. Contemporary vellum, old paper label remnants on spine. elaborate marca de fuego on lower edge. Printed on a mix of rice paper (leaves 1-160) and Chinese paper (preliminaries and leaves 161-216). Leaf A7 with some slight loss to margin, affecting several words of text; a few other minor tears to edges of leaves; several leaves partly unopened. Light dampstain to lower gutter corner. Paper toned. Overall, a very good copy of a fragile and rare book. An extremely rare and early Philippine imprint, being an Augustinian prayer manual by a friar in the Philippines. Fray Diego de Jesus was born in Puebla and read theology at the Colegio de S. Angel de Coyoacán in 1675; he subsequently joined the Order of Saint Augustine and was stationed in the Philippines. Printing started in the Philippines remarkably early, in 1593 (the unique example of the founding imprint is in the Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress), and was conducted by presses run by the different religious orders. Because of the climate and limited press runs, early imprints are notoriously rare, and generally in very poor condition when found. This is especially true of works printed on rice paper, as this is. A number of imprints recorded by Medina are known from references only, with no surviving copies. Of this work we locate only one copy in OCLC, at the National Library of Spain. Vindel offered one in his 1904 catalogue, which he described as "ejemplar probablemente único." Rare and in very nice, contemporary condition.

[MAP - NETHERLANDS - DELFT]. [BLEYSWIJCK, Dirk Evertsz. van].
B. v.'t Hoff, Oude Plattegronden Delft 17 (pp. 37- 51); Obreen, Archief III, pp. 197-206; Koeman III, p. 98 (De Ram); Landwehr, De Hooghe etcher, p. 371. A large, splendidly decorated map of the city of Delft in South Holland: "As a masterpiece of precision and of the engraver's art, it stands out above all that was produced in that genre before or after, whether for Delft or for other cities" (J. Soutendam in Obreen, p. 197). It also happens to be one of the best documented examples of map making and engraving of the Dutch golden age, with invoices, receipts and attached documents preserved for its production in the years 1675-77. The costs ran to well over 2500 guilders. In or shortly before 1675, the burgomasters of the city of Delft charged former burgomaster Van Bleyswijck (1639-1681), author of the 1667 Beschryvinge der stadt Delft (Description of the city of Delft), with the oversight of this map's production. Johannes Vercolje (1650-1693), Delft painter and mezzotint artist, executed most of the drawings, including that for the central map itself. The principal engraver was Johannes de Ram (1648-1693), as noted on the map. Romeyn de Hooghe was involved as well, but whether he carried out any work on the four main plates represented here is unclear. Overall slightly soiled and browned and rubbed in places, with some loss of image or engraved text, most notably in the lower corners. A beautiful and remarkable city map in reasonable condition, professionally restored.

MALEBRANCHE (Nicolas).
