[Quakers Meeting] Quaakers Vergadering. Fronti Nulla Fides. The Quakers Meeting

Amsterdam: Published by Carel Allard, circa 1675. Engraving. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Light crease through center where it has been folded. Skillfully repaired tear on bottom margin. Bottom right corner has been reattached. A number of tiny tear on upper edge of sheet. Image size: 14 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches. 16 1/8 x 20 inches. This fascinating, satirical print of a Quakers' meeting was executed by Carel Allard after the celebrated Dutch genre painter Egbert van Heemskerk, the younger. The Heemskerk family of painters, originally from Haarlem, settled in London in the 1670s where they garnered a reputation for fine genre scenes in the Dutch manner. Egbert was the pupil of Pieter Grebbers for a short period of time but he was influenced more by his father, whose style and subject matter he imitated in his paintings. Heemskert continued the Dutch tradition of peasant paintings but he had a particular penchant for humorous social scenes, such as this representation of a Quaker meeting house. The cause for mirth here would not be as apparent to modern audiences as it was in the 17th century when a woman preaching seemed to many people a perfect absurdity. The dog in the lower right peeing on a stern female listener's skirt emphasizes the artist's point of view. The caption poem is given in Dutch and English. The Society of Friends originated in England under George Fox and spread to the Netherlands during the mid 17th century, a period during which Amsterdam gained its lasting reputation for religious tolerance. In this bold image, Heemskert's painting, which is now housed in the Quaker Collection at the Haverford College Library, is expertly translated into print by the exceptional engraver Carel Allard. Today Allard is better known as a map engraver and publisher than a printmaker, but his technical skill and bold style is wonderfully exemplified in this striking image. The Allard family ran an active publishing business in Amsterdam during the latter half of the seventeenth century. Most of their publications consisted of large atlases of maps and town plans by Blaeu, Jansson, and Visscher, but they occasionally issued separately published prints such as this image, which testifies to Carel's skill as an engraver.

Peter Kolbe (1675-1726) was sent to South Africa with a mission to provide information about the country and to do astronomical and surveying research. This set features two folio volumes, with text in Dutch, and is the first Dutch Edition.  Volume 1 - 529 pp.  Volume 2 - 449 pp plus extensive index. The books are beautifully bound in stunning 3/4 brown leather with raised spine bands, extensive gilt tooling, leather corners, and gilt rule transitions over marbled paper covered boards.  Top edges gilt.  The contents bear 2 engraved titles, 1 portrait, 6 folding maps, and 46 engraved plates (two folding). In Volume 2 the half-title and engraved title are misbound between pages 24 and 25.  First published in Germany in 1719 as Caput Bonae Spei Hodiernum, the book "professes to be a complete account of the Cape Colony and its inhabitants... His writings were the basis of nearly everything that was published concerning South Africa during the next half century.  To those who can compare them with official records of the time, they are unquestionably of very great value, but others should be careful not to rely too much upon them.  The handsomest edition is the Dutch translation entitled Naaukeurigie... published in Amsterdam in two great volumes in 1727... There is no good translation of Kolbe's work in English that I know of".  (Theal)  The bindings are in fine condition with only the slightest hints of shelf wear at the bottom edges.  The contents are extremely clean with all illustrations and maps intact.  We note no spotting and only light occasional browning.  A gorgeous, beautifully bound, remarkably well-preserved set.

Theatrum Fungorum oft het tooneel der Campernoelien. Waer inne vertoont wort de gedaente, ken-teeckens, natuere, crachten, voetsel, deught ende ondeught; mitsgaders het voorsichtigh schoonmaken ende bereyden van alderhande Fungien...

Antwerpen, Joseph Jacobs, 1675. 4to (198 x 160mm). pp. (38), 396, (20), with engraved frontispiece, 1 folded engraved portrait and 36 (many folded) engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, old handwritten title on spine. Scarce first edition, a reissue appeared 1712. "First edition of the first separate general work on fungi, describing edible and poisonous varieties. L'Escluse has done a study called 'Fungorum in Pannonis Observatorum Historia' which was first published as part of his 'Rariorum Plantarum Historia', 1601. However, according to Nissen, L'Escluse's original manuscript for this treatise with its eighty-seven original drawings had been lost by the publisher, so they had to use other illustrations for the 1611 edition, and these were quite inaccurate. Afterwards the lost manuscript reappeared and Sterbeeck used it as a basis for his work, adding much new material of his own" (Hunt 341). "Frans van Sterbeeck, a Flemish priest of noble extraction, was born and died in Antwerp where he lived for the greater part of his life. During the eight years following his ordination in 1655, while suffering from a chronic illness, he returned his attention to botany, with particular reference to fungi and soon became a recognized expert. He was on friendly terms with other Flemish botanists and in May 1663 was visited by John Ray who admired the rare plants in van Sterbeeck's garden. It was in 1672 that Adriaan David, an Antwerp pharmacist and amateur botanist (he contributed a sonnet to the collection of adulatory tributes to the author which prefaces the 'Theatrum fungorum'), took the celebrated 'Code de l'Éscluse' (then owned by Dr. Syen, professor of botany at Leiden University) to van Sterbeeck who made considerable, if somewhat surreptitious, use of it as a source of illustrations for ther 'Theatrum fungorum' in which he claimed to have based all but a few figures on direct observation from nature" (Ainsworth, Introduction to the history of mycology pp 48-49). The manuscript was lost again for a period of 2 hundred years and is now in the Leiden University library. The elaborate frontispiece shows baskets full of mushrooms and in the middle of a crowd most probably van Sterbeeck picking a mushroom out of a basket. Small part cut out of the right upper corner of the half title (no loss of text), with old paper repair, a tear in plate 10 with old paper repair on verso of plate, causing no damage to illustration. Very clear and strong impressions of the plates. Hunt 341; Nissen BBI, 1892.; Hortus Belgicus 34.

Accuratissima Totius Africae Tabula in Lucem Producia Per Tacobum de Sandrart Norimbergae

Nuremburg: J. von Sandart, 1675. Copper engraving with early colour. Printed on laid paper. Title in manuscript ink on verso of sheet. Cleveland Historical Society collection stamp on verso of sheet. Numerous tears and creases in outside margins, which have been expertly repaired. Center fold has been strengthened. 19 ¼ x 22 ¾ inches. 20 ½ x 24 ½ inches. An early map of Africa by the great mapmaker Jacob von Sandrart, engraved by Homann. Sandrart's stunning map of Africa is a close copy of Fredrik de Wit's map, 'Nova Africa Descriptio' published in 1660. With the prime meridian running through Ferro Island, the map is typical of late seventeenth century maps of Africa.Like other maps of the period, Sandrart has included a highly decorative and informative cartouche in the lower left corner of the sheet. Homann's continental cartouches aspired to convey the natural history as well as the costume and manner of life of the human inhabitants. Here, while a woman peacefully nurses her baby in a hammock, a native chief stares out at the viewer from under the shade of a large umbrella. On the right side of the vignette, two riders on horseback, one with a cutlass and one with a decaptitated head, ride by a river where one man is attacking another with his sword. Among the humans are a lion, a snake, a reptile of some sort and another fox-like animal. Although the map repeats De Wit's decorations, it relies on Ptolemy for its description of the Nile basin. It is to some degree remarkable that seventeenth century maps of the interior of Africa were filled with geographical features and named locations, since there had been very little European exploration of the interior at this date. European trade took place at specific locations along the coast and almost nothing was known about the interior of the dark continent except through rumor. This is a fascinating map by Sandrart and one of only two maps engraved by Homann before 1690.Born at Frankfurt-on-Main, Jacob von Sandrart was one of the most esteemed mapmakers in Nuremberg at the close of the seventeenth century. He learned his trade from his uncle Joachim von Sandrart and from Cornelius Danckerts. As with this impressive map, all of Sandrart's charts are filled with a wealth of decorative details and highly ornate cartouches.

        Neapolis.

Amsterdam, 1675 circa. Amsterdam e l'A.
