La Defense du Droit de Marie Therese d'Austriche, Reine de France

1674. Legal Foundations of the War of Devolution La Feuillade, Georges d'Aubusson de [1612-1697]. La Defense du Droit de Marie Therese d'Austriche, Reine de France a la Succession des Couronnes d'Espagne. Paris: Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1674. [xxiv], 164, [1] pp. 12mo. (5-1/2" x 3"). Contemporary sheep treated to resemble tree-calf, gilt spine with raised bands, speckled edges. Some rubbing to extremities with minor wear to spine ends, corners bumped. Toning to text, faint dampstaining and spotting to a few leaves, internally clean. * First edition. The author was the Archbishop of Embrun, later Prince-Archbishop of Metz. Mazarin appointed him ambassador to Venice in 1659. Louis XIV appointed him ambassador to Spain in 1667 to pursue French claims to the Spanish Netherlands in the name of Maria Theresa of Austria (1638-1683), the Spanish Infanta and Queen Consort of Louis XIV. These claims were tenuous and constructed on intricate legal foundations. French jurists argued that the Spanish Netherlands should not go to the still underage heir to the Spanish throne, Charles II of Spain (1661-1700), because he was the issue of the second marriage of Philip IV. Maria Theresa on the other hand was a result of his first marriage and the lands thereby 'devolved' to her and, of course, Louis XIV. France's claims led to the War of devolution (1667-68). Feuillade defends France's claims with an argument grounded in the "fundamental laws of Spain, the examples of past centuries and the solemn judgments of the Royal Council of Castile." A second edition was published in 1699. Both copies are scarce, especially in North America. OCLC locates no copies in North American law libraries. British Museum Catalogue (Compact Edition) 1:1145.

Liber Placitandi: A Book of Special Pleadings Containing Precedents

1674. "The Hands of Some of the Best Pleaders of the Age" [Pleading]. Liber Placitandi: A Book of Special Pleadings: Containing Precedents of Pleas in Abatement, Declarations, Barrs, Replications, Rejoynders, Demurrers, Issues, and Judgments, In the Now Most Common and Ordinary Actions, Viz. Actions Upon the Case, Actions Upon Statutes, Account, Covenant, Debt, Prohibitions, Replevin, Scire Facias, and Trespass. Also, The Forms of Entries in Writs of Error, Utlaries, General issues, and Judgments, Intended for the Benefit of the Students of the Common Law, and For the Use of Practicing Clerks and Attorneys. Together With a Table. London: Printed for J. Place, and T. Bassett, 1674. [iv], 460, [28] pp. Folio (8-1/4" x 12-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Attractive woodcut head-piece. Toning to text with light browning to margins, occasional spark burns. Upper corner clipped from title page, chips and wear to edges of a few leaves, no loss to text. Signature to head of title page and occasional notes in early court hand. An appealing copy. * Only edition. Some pleader's manuals, such as Rastell's Book of Entries (1564), were semi-official compilations by single authors. Others, such as the Liber Placitandi were collections drawn from various authors. Sometimes cited as Thompson's Entries, it was first published in 1671. Holdsworth considers it a fine example of the genre. The preface assures the reader that "[m]ost of the pleadings are Modern, having occurr'd in the Court of King's Bench, since his Majesties Happy Restauration; whereof many received Approbation under the hands of some of the best pleaders of the Age: (as by their Originals may be Attested).": To The Reader [iii]. Holdsworth, A History of English Law V:386. Sweet & Maxwell list a 1671 edition, but it appears to be a ghost. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:273 (96).

A potentially very important Autograph letter from the recently appointed Inspector of Excise Revenue to Charles II's First Minister, the Earl Of Danby, on the issue of delayed returns into the financial state of the Navy.

London 2nd December 1674 - Folio, single page written in Secretary hand but signed by Shales, addressed, docketed, some dustiness, has been folded for delivery, evidence of seal wax. In 1673, towards the end of the Third Anglo Dutch war, the English Navy was £1000,000 in debt; ships were worn out, compliment of serving men at its lowest for years, and fraud was rife. Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby and First Minister, requested in March 1674 information on the Navy's financial condition. John Shales, recently appointed \inspector of Excise Revenue and previously Victualling Agent to the Navy at Portsmouth, writes that although partial information has become available he is as yet unable to file a complete report for lack of further data. He concludes by referring to a consultation between Danby and Samuel Pepys, who was at that time conducting his important strategic review of naval refurbishments and systemic abuses - "The Charge of the Navy continues its progression to a degree far beyond the Establishment which your Loxx (Lordships) has design'd to consult Mr Pepys." Enodatio Problematum universis geometris Propositorum [¿] Praemissis, horum occasione, Tentamentis Variis ad Solutionem illustris veterum Problematis De Anguli Trisectione. Florence, Gugliantini, 1677. [2] ff, (6), 63 pp., 4 folding engraved plates. With presentation inscription to verso of half-title of first work signed by Viviani. Bound in contemporary calf with spine in six compartments. A wonderfully fresh copy, light toning and foxing to one or two leaves, otherwise excellent. First complete edition (second; first 1674, see below) of this important Galileianum, an assembly of previously unpublished writings by Galileo, together with texts by Torricelli and Viviani himself, inscribed by Viviani to an unknown (scored) receipient. Vincenzo Viviani resided with Galileo at Arectri from October 1639 as his pupil, amanuensis, and assistant, and together with Torricelli, spent the last months of Galileo¿s life with him recording the master¿s final meditations on the relationship between mathematics and physics. The first chapter of this work, a dialogue entitled ¿Quinto Libro degli Elementi d¿Euclide. spiegata colla Dottrina del Galileo¿ was dictated by Galileo to Torricelli in November 1641. (Galileo died January 9, 1642.) Though on his deathbed, it was to be the beginning of still another book continuing the discussion between his three old interlocutors from the Two New Sciences. In this dialogue, printed here and edited from a manuscript given to Viviani by Cardinal De¿ Medici, Galileo reflects upon two definitions found in Euclid¿s Elements, ¿same ratio¿ and ¿compound ratio,¿ which were ¿the two most important keys taken from antiquity in creating Galileo¿s mathematical physics, so that his exposition of them as the last act of his scientific career reflected his earliest scientific steps at Pisa and Padua. Like the Leaning Tower affair, this dialogue linked his last days with his first; Galileo had come full circle¿ (Drake, p. 421). As a young man, Galileo was profoundly influenced by the Elements, especially Books Five and Six which contained the Eudoxian theory of proportion. ¿The importance of the Eudoxian proportion theory to Galileo¿s science cannot be exaggerated. Until the application of algebra to the general solution of geometrical (as well as arithmetical) problems, not achieved until after Galileo¿s work was completed, rigorous connection of mathematics with physical events was possible only through some theory of proportionality. Eudoxian theory establishing proportionality between continuous magnitudes was essential to any great advance over medieval physics¿ (Drake, p. 4). Viviani ¿with the rigor and prolixity of the ancients¿devoted an appendix to geometric problems, among which was one on the trisection of an angle, solved by the use of the cylindrical spiral or of a cycloid; another was the problem of duplicating the cube, solved by means of conics or of the cubic xy2 =k¿ (DSB). .         Lectiones opticae & geometricae: in quibus phaenomenon opticorum genuinae rationes investigantur, ac exponuntur: et generalia curvarum linearum symptomata declarantur. 2 parts in 1 volume.

William Godbid for Robert Scott, London 1674 - 4to (202x152 mm). [12], 127 [1], [2], 147, [3] pp., 27 folding engraved plates. With the ¿Benevolo Lectori¿ preliminary leaf bound before the ¿Lectiones Geometricae.' Bound in a contemporary English speckled calf with a spine divided by raised bands into 6 richly gilt compartments. The book-block is strong and the hinges hold very firmly. The leather upon the front hinge is lightly cracked, but the cords hold firmly. The boards themselves, the edges and the corners show only slightest wear. Internally, the leaves are toned, but generally clean, with ample margins and clear print throughout. There is light occasional spotting and little marginal staining, which remains quite unobtrusive. The title page show a very small burn hole not affecting text, the second F2 got a small burn-hole in the outer margin, not affecting text as well. The 27 folding engraved plates are excellent impressions, some browned a bit stronger. This is an unusually attractive example of a rare work. ---- Wing B 945; Babson 249; Wallis 358.4; Sotheran 5816 (2); DSB I, 475. Very rare early issue of the first edition without the 'Addenda Lectionibus Geometricis' (pp. 149-151) and plate 13 of the second part found in later issues. In this issue, plate 12 is in uncorrected state with missing lines in figure 220 finished by hand. This plate was re-ingraved for the later issues. "Many problems connected with the reflexion and refraction of light are treated with ingenuity. The geometrical focus of a point seen by reflexion or refraction is defined; and it is explained that the image of an object is the locus of the geometrical foci of every point on it. Barrow also worked out a few of the easier properties of thin lenses; and considerably simplified the Cartesian explanation of the rainbow. The geometrical lectures contain some new ways of determining the areas and tangents of curves. The most celebrated of these is the method given for the determination of tangents to curves" (Sotheran). Isaac Barrow (October 1630 ¿ 4 May 1677) was an English Christian theologian, and mathematician who is generally given credit for his early role in the development of infinitesimal calculus; in particular, for the discovery of the fundamental theorem of calculus. His work centered on the properties of the tangent; Barrow was the first to calculate the tangents of the kappa curve. Isaac Newton was a student of Barrow's, and Newton went on to develop calculus in a modern form. In 1662 he was made professor of geometry at Gresham College, and in 1663 was selected as the first occupier of the Lucasian chair at Cambridge. During his tenure of this chair he published two mathematical works of great learning and elegance, the first on geometry and the second on optics. In 1669 he resigned his professorship in favour of Isaac Newton. In 1669 he issued his ¿Lectiones XVIII,¿ which would come to be known as the ¿Lectiones Opticae.¿ The ¿Lectiones Geometricae¿ were first published in 1670, and the two volumes together, revised, corrected, edited and slightly expanded by Collins and Newton, were first published in 1674 (the edition offered here). It is said in the preface that Newton revised and corrected the ¿Lectiones Opticae.' In this 1674 first complete edition, the title and preliminary matter for the ¿Lectiones Geometricae¿ were supposed to be cancelled. Indeed, ESTC states that ¿no copy is recorded with the original second title page retained.¿ In addition to the new title-page, this copy actually contains the uncancelled preliminary material. Barrows work was edited by John Collins and Isaac Newton, and corrected and revised by Issac Newton, thus constituting one of Newton's earliest publications. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Nouvelle Experiences du Vuide. Avec la Description des Machines qui servent a Les faire

Two engraved plates (one slightly cropped at foot with no loss of image). 2 p.l., 28 pp. 4to, red morocco-backed red cloth boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (two small holes to final leaf touching three letters), spine lettered in gilt. Paris: J. Cusson, fils, 1674. First edition of the author's first work; this is an extremely rare book and one of the most important documents on the early history of the air pump. I have been looking for a copy of this book for many years. The Nouvelles Experiences du Vuide is dedicated to Huygens, whom Papin had assisted since 1670 in the construction of air pumps. A skilled mechanic, Papin constructed the air pumps and performed a number of experiments under Huygens' direction. Papin's book is the primary source (besides letters published half a century later in Huygens' Oeuvres) for information on Huygens' improvements on Boyle's first air pump. This book also describes the experiments Papin made with the air pump, in which he showed for the first time that liquids boil in a vacuum at very weak temperatures. He also describes some attempts at preserving food in a vacuum that testify to Papin's utilitarian bent of mind. For the remainder of his life, Papin's efforts were concerned mainly with the relationships of the pressure and temperature of air and water and the application of these relationships to useful purposes. "Among further improvements in the air-pump during the latter part of the seventeenth century were the two way tap, introduced by Papin; and the double cylindered pump, probably introduced by Papin and perfected by Hauksbee, through whom the air-pump assumed what long remained its standard form."-Wolf, A History of Science, Technology, and Philosophy, Vol. I, p. 107. The latter improvement was incorporated in the machine which Papin took with him to England in 1676. Fine copy with a note on the rear paste-down endpaper in the hand of the distinguished bookseller Ernst Weil "Collated & Perfect, EW." In his Cat. 27, item 162, Dr. Weil stated this book is to be "always regarded as one of the Classics in Science; it is without doubt one of the rarest of all of them." ❧ D.S.B., X, pp. 292-93. .

Anglo, The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe, p. 190; Landwehr, De Hooghe Bookillustrator 39; Verkruijsse 1674.15. First edition of this well-known book on wrestling, containing also a method for an unarmed man attacked by a man armed with a knife to defend himself. The book is even more important by its illustrations by the famous Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe as by the text of Nicolaes Petter.Prof. Sydney Anglo characterizes the book as "historically speaking the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed . . . the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous". The combination of Petter's lucid descriptions on p. 1-16, devoid of all jargon and De Hooghe's masterful depiction of pain and violence in the engravings, elevates the book to its position of solitary eminence. Splendid copy of this famous illustrated book.
