Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1674. 8vo (189x111 mm), [40] 1-335 [1], 3-152 pp., engraved portrait and 6 folding plates, contemporary calf, rebacked, somewhat spotted, slight fraying to edge of portait, new endpapers, p. 189 torn with partial loss of two words. Provenance: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, inkstamps on title. ----NLM/Krivatsy 7653; Waller 6392; Wellcome IV, p. 93; Wing M-1537; Norman 1474. - FIRST EDITION, including revisions of two treatises (De respiratione and De rachitide) first published in 1668, and three new works, including his most celebrated work, De sal-nitro et spiritu nitro-aereo, on combustion, respiration, the composition of the atmosphere, and aerial - nitrate. He proved what both he and Hooke contended, that only a portion of air is used in respiration and combustion, by demonstrating that air in an enclosed space, when burned or breathed, is reduced only by one fourteenth. He also discovered that the muscles were the source of animal heat, and the double-articulation of the ribs with the spine. '[Mayow's] Tractatus, embodying all his brilliant conclusions, is one of the best English medical classics' (Garrison-Morton 578). Good.

Lectiones opticae & geometricae: in quibus phaenomenon opticorum genuinae rationes investigantur, ac exponuntur: et generalia curvarum linearum symptomata declarantur. 2 parts in 1 volume.

London: William Godbid for Robert Scott, 1674. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (202x152 mm). [12], 127 [1], [2], 147, [3] pp., 27 folding engraved plates. With the 'Benevolo Lectori' preliminary leaf bound before the 'Lectiones Geometricae.' Bound in a contemporary English speckled calf with a spine divided by raised bands into 6 richly gilt compartments. The book-block is strong and the hinges hold very firmly. The leather upon the front hinge is lightly cracked, but the cords hold firmly. The boards themselves, the edges and the corners show only slightest wear. Internally, the leaves are toned, but generally clean, with ample margins and clear print throughout. There is light occasional spotting and little marginal staining, which remains quite unobtrusive. The title page show a very small burn hole not affecting text, the second F2 got a small burn-hole in the outer margin, not affecting text as well. The 27 folding engraved plates are excellent impressions, some browned a bit stronger. This is an unusually attractive example of a rare work. ----Wing B 945; Babson 249; Wallis 358.4; Sotheran 5816 (2); DSB I, 475. Very rare early issue of the first edition without the 'Addenda Lectionibus Geometricis' (pp. 149-151) and plate 13 of the second part found in later issues. In this issue, plate 12 is in uncorrected state with missing lines in figure 220 finished by hand. This plate was re-ingraved for the later issues. "Many problems connected with the reflexion and refraction of light are treated with ingenuity. The geometrical focus of a point seen by reflexion or refraction is defined; and it is explained that the image of an object is the locus of the geometrical foci of every point on it. Barrow also worked out a few of the easier properties of thin lenses; and considerably simplified the Cartesian explanation of the rainbow. The geometrical lectures contain some new ways of determining the areas and tangents of curves. The most celebrated of these is the method given for the determination of tangents to curves" (Sotheran). Isaac Barrow (October 1630 - 4 May 1677) was an English Christian theologian, and mathematician who is generally given credit for his early role in the development of infinitesimal calculus; in particular, for the discovery of the fundamental theorem of calculus. His work centered on the properties of the tangent; Barrow was the first to calculate the tangents of the kappa curve. Isaac Newton was a student of Barrow's, and Newton went on to develop calculus in a modern form. In 1662 he was made professor of geometry at Gresham College, and in 1663 was selected as the first occupier of the Lucasian chair at Cambridge. During his tenure of this chair he published two mathematical works of great learning and elegance, the first on geometry and the second on optics. In 1669 he resigned his professorship in favour of Isaac Newton. In 1669 he issued his 'Lectiones XVIII,' which would come to be known as the 'Lectiones Opticae.' The 'Lectiones Geometricae' were first published in 1670, and the two volumes together, revised, corrected, edited and slightly expanded by Collins and Newton, were first published in 1674 (the edition offered here). It is said in the preface that Newton revised and corrected the 'Lectiones Opticae.' In this 1674 first complete edition, the title and preliminary matter for the 'Lectiones Geometricae' were supposed to be cancelled. Indeed, ESTC states that "no copy is recorded with the original second title page retained." In addition to the new title-page, this copy actually contains the uncancelled preliminary material. Barrows work was edited by John Collins and Isaac Newton, and corrected and revised by Issac Newton, thus constituting one of Newton's earliest publications. Very Good.

"Discours du mouvement local" was published [in this second edition] with additional remarks designed to counter the charge of Cartesianism. Yet although Pardies clearly derived a geat deal from the Cartesian heritage and felt obliged to defend himself in this regard, Cartesianism was not his principal source. Through the "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society" he was directly informed of the advences of English science (quadrature of hyperbola and the competition concerning the laws of impact); and in Paris he closely followed the work of the newly established Académie Royale des Sciences and especially that of Huygens, with whom he was in personal contact".         Ling-t'ai I-hsiang t'u or Hsin-chih I-hsiang t'u [trans.: A Newly Made Collection of Astronomical Instruments]

      - 106 double-page woodcuts (the first opening is the Chinese Preface, the remaining 105 openings are woodcut illus. within frames, the images each measuring ca. 315 x 320 mm.), printed on thin white Chinese paper. Two vols. Small folio (395 x 199 mm.), orig. golden-yellow silk over paper wrappers (spines perished & with a little fraying), woodcut Chinese title labels on upper covers as issued. [Beijing: presented to the Emperor 6 March 1674]. First edition, printed by the Jesuits in Beijing, of this magnificent woodcut book depicting the observatory and scientific instruments designed by the Jesuits for the emperor of China. This is a very rare book ; our copy was prepared for the Chinese market, probably for the use of the emperor and the functionaries at the observatory. "Very soon after his first visit to Peking in 1601, Matteo Ricci, S.J. (1552-1610), the 'founding father' of the Jesuit Mission in China, was well aware of the Emperor's fondness for European clocks and other instruments such as harpsichords etc., and the former presented an opportunity to enter the Court. Shortly thereafter, he would understand that European astronomy and mathematics were unbeatable challengers of contemporary Chinese science - for several centuries in a state of decline - in calculating a correct calendar and reliable eclipse predictions, both very important guarantors of social and dynastic stability and continuity. Apart from this, the mechanical sciences would also became a first class vehicle to penetrate the highly sophisticated circles of mandarins and courtiers, whose curiosity about European things never seen and about new astonishing techniques struggled with their loyalty to their own uncontested traditions, with highly varying individual attitudes as a result. By all this European science appeared to be an appropriate vehicle to approach the Chinese upper class, and, implicitly, to introduce Christianity in China."-Golvers, Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623-1688) and the Chinese Heaven, p. 15. In 1629 the Jesuits succeeded in establishing an academy for western mathematical sciences in Beijing. The newly established Ch'ing Dynasty nominated Adam Schall von Bell in 1644 as acting director of the ancient Imperial Board of Astronomy, which had the sole authority to calculate and promulgate the yearly Chinese calendar. As a result, Schall and his fellow Jesuits acquired considerable prestige in the highest levels of Chinese society and government. The newly arrived Verbiest (1623-88), became Schall's assistant in 1660. With Schall's death in 1666, Verbiest was the only westerner commanding the astronomical knowledge needed at the Chinese Observatory; he was appointed director in 1669. The Emperor K'ang Hsi was a young and intellectually curious ruler who was fascinated by European science and technology. Verbiest was elevated to Mandarin rank and often accompanied the emperor on his travels around the country. Verbiest designed and built a series of instruments for observation, including a quadrant, six feet in radius; an azimuth compass, six feet in diameter; a sextant, eight feet in radius; a celestial globe, six feet in diameter; and two armillary spheres, zodiacal and equinoctial, each six feet in diameter. These were all very large, made from brass, and mounted on highly decorated stands contrived in the form of lions, dragons, flaming pearls, and other oriental motifs. The technology is entirely European while the decorative features are very Chinese. The inspiration and model for this book was clearly Tycho Brahe's Astronomiae Instauratae Mechanica of 1598. In the present work, the woodcuts display not only the instruments themselves, but show in great detail the processes of their manufacture, with the tools and implements used to produce them; the alignment and adjustment of their flat and curved surfaces; details of the gearing and screws used to adjust and direct the instruments; the civil engineering machinery and processes u [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Erneuerte Hauß- und Feld-Apotheck, oder Stadt- und Land-Artzney-Buch, .Frankfurt am Main, Martin Hallervord; Königsberg, printed by Johann Andreae, 1674. With engraved illustrated title-page.With: (2) SCHRÖDER, Johan (and others?). [Pharmacological recipes in manuscript].[Westfalen?, ca. 1674]. A manuscript pharmacopoeia in German, written in dark brown ink on paper, in a Latin hand with gothic influences. 2 works in 1 volume. Narrow 8vo (18 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary vellum.

      - Ad 1: VD17 23:242182F (3 copies); Waller 3622; cf. Krivatsy 4870 & 4871. Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

He was one of the foremost intelligencers of Europe of the seventeenth century, with a network of correspondents to rival those of Fabri de Peiresc, Marin Mersenne and Ismaël Boulliau. At the foundation of the Royal Society he took on the task of foreign correspondence, as the first Secretary. Born in Bremen, Germany, he trained in theology and received his degree on 2 November 1639. His movements during the 1640s are unclear, but he is thought to have worked as a tutor in England for much of the decade. In 1648 he left England and travelled, returning in the end to Bremen. He went to London in 1653, as a diplomat and settled in England of the Interregnum. He forged a strong relationship with his lifelong patron Robert Boyle, and was tutor to Boyle's nephew Richard Jones. Oldenburg married his second wife, Dora Katherina Dury (165477), the daughter of John Dury. Either through John Milton, whom he met early in his mission, or through Lady Ranelagh, sister to Boyle and the mother of Richard Jones, Oldenburg gained entry to an important intellectual circle, including Samuel Hartlib, whose extensive web of correspondents Oldenburg was to take over, John Dury who became his father-in-law, and others such as William Petty. Among Oldenburg's correspondents at this time was Baruch Spinoza, who he was introduced to on a trip to the Netherlands, and to whom he presented a volume of writings on scientific topics by Boyle. After the Restoration he became an early member (original fellow) of the Royal Society (founded in 1660), and served as its first secretary along with John Wilkins, maintaining an extensive network of scientific contacts through Europe. He also became the founding editor of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Oldenburg began the practice of sending submitted manuscripts to experts who could judge their quality before publication. This was the beginning of both the modern scientific journal and the practice of peer review. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society continues today and is the longest running scientific journal in the world. He was briefly imprisoned in the Tower as a suspected spy in 1667, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Oldenburg's correspondence was linked to support from the politician Sir Joseph Williamson in part Oldenburg supplied Williamson with intelligence information. Oldenburg enjoyed good health in his lifetime, but he fell seriously ill on 3 September 1677, and he died two days thereafter at his Pall Mall, London home. He was interred on 7 September at St Mary the Virgin, Bexley. His widow died ten days later. (Wikipedia)

[trans.: Collection of Edo Cuisine]

Many woodcut illus. in the text. Six volumes bound in two. 8vo, orig. wrappers (outer wrappers quite rubbed), remains of printed title label on upper cover of Vol. I (again, quite rubbed), new stitching. N.p.: Suzuki, 1674. First edition of one of the earliest cookbooks in Japan written for chefs working for fiefdom lords; it introduced Edo's cuisine to the rest of the country. The first fish market in Tokyo opened in 1625 and the number of fish recipes in this book is very large. The first printed Japanese cookery book - Ryori monogatari - was published in 1643. The arrangement of our work is seasonal and the anonymous author describes each season's foods, always stressing the preparations should be pleasing to the eye. The author describes balanced menus; for instance, if you serve two soups, one should be salty and the other should have the taste of miso. It is one of the first to consider kaiseki cuisine for samurai and aristocrats. This encyclopedic book is richly illustrated with woodcuts showing the various widths vegetables should be cut; ceremonial preparations; how to cut up poultry, fish, and vegetables with very detailed instructions on the many ways daikon radish can be sliced; tofu preparations; terrines of fish; etc. Hundreds of recipes are provided, including 43 detailed descriptions of such dishes as clear soup with sea bream or clear soup with whitebait. Internally, a fine copy.

        Ling-t'ai I-hsiang t'u or Hsin-chih I-hsiang t'u [trans.: A Newly Made Collection of Astronomical Instruments]

106 double-page woodcuts (the first opening is the Chinese Preface, the remaining 105 openings are woodcut illus. within frames, the images each measuring ca. In the present work, the woodcuts display not only the instruments themselves, but show in great detail the processes of their manufacture, with the tools and implements used to produce them; the alignment and adjustment of their flat and curved surfaces; details of the gearing and screws used to adjust and direct the instruments; the civil engineering machinery and processes used in building the instrument mountings and the great observatory tower itself. Other woodcuts depict navigational instruments such as the compass and cross-staff, and their use; astronomical principles; and mechanical powers, such as those of the inclined plane, lever, screw, pulley, winches, etc. This work is one of the greatest masterpieces of Sino-European printing. The woodcuts are undoubtedly done by Chinese artists working after Verbiest's drawings, or after his directions. Fine set preserved in a rather luxurious box. There was another issue prepared for export with an additional woodcut opening with the title in Latin, the Liber Organicus Astronomiae Europaeae. ? Chapman, Allan, "Tycho Brahe in China: the Jesuit Mission in Peking and the Iconography of European Instrument-making Processes: in Annals of Science, Vol. 41 (1984), pp. 417-43-(gving a detailed technical exposition of the illustrations in this work). Cordier, Sinica, 1451. Golvers, Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623-1688) and the Chinese Heaven, no. LO 12 in his census. Sommervogel VIII, 575.

Macbeth, a Tragedy: With all the Alterations, Amendments, Additions, and New Songs. As it is now Acted at the Duke's Theatre.

"Double double, toyl and trouble; Fire burn, and Cauldron bubble." THE SECOND QUARTO EDITION AND THE FIRST DAVENANT EDITION . 1 vol., 17 cm x 21.7 cm, (ii)66pp., small minor paper repair to extreme lower corner of A2 & D2. Bound in contemporary full paneled calf, expertly rebacked, pastedowns and endpapers renewed, internally clean and bright, a nice un-washed copy in for the most part a contemporary binding. Wing S-2930. Macbeth first appeared in the 1623 collected First Folio of Shakespeare, but was not published separately until the first quarto edition of 1673. Exceedingly rare the census locates only 3 or 4 copies in private hands. By 1673 Davenant's version was enjoying theatrical success in London and in response to this the first quarto edition of the play was issued, which included three additional witches' songs from Davenant's production. In 1674 the first full edition of Davenant's text appeared and both Philip Chetwin and A. Clark published quarto editions. Both of these printings include revised versions of several speeches, two new scenes which were entirely Davenant's own creation, and the three witches' songs. Even so, compared to other early editors, Davenant was relatively faithful to Shakespeare's text. This Chetwin edition is often thought to precede the Clark edition issued the same year by a matter of weeks or months, making the present copy the first Davenant edition and the second quarto edition overall. Both 1674 editions, and indeed all Restoration quartos of Macbeth, are extraordinarily rare. Pforzheimer did not own anything earlier than the 1687 Davenant reprint, and only a handful of 17th-century printings have appeared on the market in 25 years.
