Enquiries touching the diversity of languages and religions, through the chief parts of the world. Written by Edw. Brerewood, sometime professor of astronomy in Gresham College in London

London: printed for Samuel Mearne, John Martyn, and Henry Herringman, 1674. Fourth edition, the first in octavo; 8vo, pp. [32], 252, [3]; full contemporary calf, sprinkled edges; extremities worn, spine with a few chips out, but in all a good, sound copy. "The earliest book to suggest the now accepted theory of the Asiatic origin of the American aborigine." It went through four editions in England 1614-1674, and six others on the continent. "The author devotes a portion of the book to the first peopling of America, claiming the Tartars as their forefathers. His account of religion in America is very curious, especially the part where he describes an old priest who baptized 700,000! Chapter XXII relates to the idolatries practiced in America" (Sabin). Alston III, 764; Sabin 7732, citing the 1635 edition; Wing B4378.

Kunsthistoricus Otto Benesch noemde hem ?not only the greatest Dutch etcher of the second half of the century, but the only great artist Holland produced at the end of her classical era. He was one of the greatest illustrators of all times and comprehends within himself all the various faculties of the universal mind of the Baroque".Prijs: ? 3.650,- (incl. lijst).

Wieder-errungene Freyheit.

VD17 23:304621K.         VITAE REVERENDIS PATRIS F. HIERONYMI SAVONAROLAE FERRARIENSIS, ORD. PRAEDICATORUM (VOLS. I-II)

Paris: Ludovici Billaine, 1674. Hardcover. Bound in full vellum. Two volumes. 3 7/8" x 6 1/4". Fold-out plates. Books in very good condition. Covers somewhat soiled. Corners bumped. Title cards on spines in excellent condition in red and black with gilt stamping. Bound with five raised bands. Some deterioration at ends of gutters on front and back of both books. Extensive period ink handwriting on all endpapers. Otherwise, a set of clean and tight books in very good condition. Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1470–1533) was an Italian nobleman and philosopher, the nephew of famed Renaissance humanist, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Like his uncle he devoted himself chiefly to philosophy, but made it subject to the Bible, though in his treatises, De studio divinæ et humanæ sapientiæ and particularly in the six books entitled Examen doctrinæ vanitatis gentium, he depreciates the authority of the philosophers, above all of Aristotle. He wrote a detailed biography of his uncle, published in 1496, and another of Girolamo Savonarola, of whom he was a follower. The two-volume set here is the latter biography of Savonarola, an Italian Dominican friar and preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He was known for his prophecies of civic glory, the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule and the exploitation of the poor. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood and a new Cyrus from the north who would reform the Church.

Sometimes cited as Thompson's Entries, it was first published in 1671. One of its sections, "Actions sur le Case," is notable as the first treatment of torts as a separate category. Holdsworth considers it a fine example of the genre. The preface assures the reader that "[m]ost of the pleadings are Modern, having occurr'd in the Court of King's Bench, since his Majesties Happy Restauration; whereof many received Approbation under the hands of some of the best pleaders of the Age: (as by their Originals may be Attested).": To The Reader [iii].         Natural History of the Passions.

[London]: In the Savoy, Printed by T. N. for James Magnes in Russell-Street, 1674. First edition.. Homemade repair of a calf patch at the head of the spine in the style of an earlier repair, with a recent red morocco label to the spine; some occasional damp-staining and some rubbing and wear; a very good to good copy.. 8vo, contemporary sheep, [48], 188 pages. From the royalist physician and neo-Epicurean Walter Charleton (1619-1707), an important work engaging in part with Descartes and Hobbes, on the relationship between emotions and healthóor as Charleton has it here, ìthough it be undoubtedly true, that the Reasonable Soul hath her intellectual Delights and Disquiets apart, such as are proper to her simple and spiritual nature: yet is it no less true, that those other Delights and Disquiets that are common to her with the Body, depend upon the affections.î Once thought to be based on J.F. Senaultís De líusage des passions (1641), this is instead an original English work; see R. A. Hunter and E. Cuttler, ìWalter Charletonís Natural History of the Passions (1674) and J. F. Senaultís The Use of the Passions (1649): A case of mistaken identity,î Journal of the History of Medicine and the Allied Sciences, vol. 13, 1958, and Emily Booth, ìA Subtle and Mysterious Machineî: The Medical World of Walter Charleton (1619-1707), Dordrecht: Springer, 2005. Contemporary signature of James Twigg, ìhis Bookî across the head of the title page.

3.850,- (incl. lijst).

Holograph Manuscript fragment from an Essay or a short story entitled "Communipaw" with a clipped signature pasted at the bottom of the text

After the last English takeover of New Netherland in 1674 Communipaw became part of the Province of New Jersey, Bergen County, though it retained its Dutch character for hundreds of years. Washington Irving visited it often (at least once with future US president Martin van Buren) for inspiration. Writing in the early 19th century, he often referred to Communipaw as being the stronghold of traditional Dutch culture.

        Tracts consisting of observations

printed by E. Flesher for R. Davis : 1674 : London : 8vo: A4 (-A1) B-N8, 99 of 100 leaves, pp. [6] 51 [3] 6 [2] 5 [3] 11 [3] 39 [3] 5 [3] 11 [3] 27 [3] 14, without the blank A1. : A work consisting of 10 tracts describing Boyle's work in thermodynamics, the desalination of sea water, and experiments with a new hygrometer. The first four tracts are sequels to his Experimental history of cold (1665); they describe experiments on the expansive force of freezing water and various freezing mixtures measured with spirit thermometers. The next tract is the one from which the volume takes its title, 'Observations and experiments about the saltness of the sea.' Boyle was very interested in the practical problems of desalination and much of this tract describes experiments to discover a practical method which could be used at sea. As a result of this piece Boyle became involved in a long correspondence, some of which was printed in Fitzgerald's Saltwater sweetened (1683). The next tract is 'Relations about the bottom of the sea,' followed by 'Of the natural and preternatural state of bodies'. The three final tracts describe experiments and observations made with Boyle's hygrometer. This used a sponge suspended from one arm of a balance, an arrangement he preferred to the more common hygrometers pioneered by the Accademia del Cimento, which relied on the expansion and contraction of vegetable or animal fibres. Boyle says that the problem with such hygrometers, using lute strings or oat beards, is that after a while their contractile power is altered or impaired (see Daumas p. 60).Typical of the books from the Edgerston library, this copy is in very good original condition in a simple unlettered sheep trade-binding and with an unassuming printed label rather than the engraved booklabel that one might expect from a major country house collection. The label was probably printed for John Rutherfurd (1748-1834) who inherited the Edgerston estate in the Scottish borders in 1764.

Copenhagen: Sumptibus Petri Hauboldi, Reg. Acad. Bibl. 1674. First edition, and "one of the few copies having the folding plate illustrating three types of retorts, as well as the four-page dedication to Jean Baptiste Colbert. According to the Wellcome Library catalogue, 'this plate is a copy from a MS. Of Zosimus (ca. 500 A.D.) of the earliest known illustration of distilling apparatus.' In this work Borrichius answers Hermann Conring's De Hermetica Aegyptiorum Medicina (Helmstedt, 1648), wherein the extreme antiquity attributed to alchemy had been seriously doubted. Borrichius's book contains valuable information on the early history of alchemy. The substantial final portion supports Paracelsian theory as applied to medicine. No other editions except this one of 1674 exist. Although several works by Borrichius were reprinted in Magnet's Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa (Geneva, 1702), this was not among them. "Ferguson states that there 'were apparently two issues of this book, for I have seen other copies without the dedication and the plate.' Duveen confirms this, his copy being without the plate and dedication. The Wellcome Library catalogue states that this is the second issue, although on what authority I do not know. This issue is very rare." (The Roy G. Neville Historical Chemical Library). Small 4to (197 x 147 mm), contemporary vellum, pp. [xii], 448 [8:index] and folding engraved plate facing p. 156, light uniform browning throughout, in all avery good copy in its original state.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

He proved what both he and Hooke contended, that only a portion of air is used in respiration and combustion, by demonstrating that air in an enclosed space, when burned or breathed, is reduced only by one fourteenth. He also discovered that the muscles were the source of animal heat, and the double-articulation of the ribs with the spine. '[Mayow's] Tractatus, embodying all his brilliant conclusions, is one of the best English medical classics' (Garrison-Morton 578). Good.

Lectiones opticae & geometricae: in quibus phaenomenon opticorum genuinae rationes investigantur, ac exponuntur: et generalia curvarum linearum symptomata declarantur. 2 parts in 1 volume.

London: William Godbid for Robert Scott, 1674. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (202x152 mm). [12], 127 [1], [2], 147, [3] pp., 27 folding engraved plates. With the 'Benevolo Lectori' preliminary leaf bound before the 'Lectiones Geometricae.' Bound in a contemporary English speckled calf with a spine divided by raised bands into 6 richly gilt compartments. The book-block is strong and the hinges hold very firmly. The leather upon the front hinge is lightly cracked, but the cords hold firmly. The boards themselves, the edges and the corners show only slightest wear. Internally, the leaves are toned, but generally clean, with ample margins and clear print throughout. There is light occasional spotting and little marginal staining, which remains quite unobtrusive. The title page show a very small burn hole not affecting text, the second F2 got a small burn-hole in the outer margin, not affecting text as well. The 27 folding engraved plates are excellent impressions, some browned a bit stronger. This is an unusually attractive example of a rare work. ----Wing B 945; Babson 249; Wallis 358.4; Sotheran 5816 (2); DSB I, 475. Very rare early issue of the first edition without the 'Addenda Lectionibus Geometricis' (pp. 149-151) and plate 13 of the second part found in later issues. In this issue, plate 12 is in uncorrected state with missing lines in figure 220 finished by hand. This plate was re-ingraved for the later issues. "Many problems connected with the reflexion and refraction of light are treated with ingenuity. The geometrical focus of a point seen by reflexion or refraction is defined; and it is explained that the image of an object is the locus of the geometrical foci of every point on it. Barrow also worked out a few of the easier properties of thin lenses; and considerably simplified the Cartesian explanation of the rainbow. The geometrical lectures contain some new ways of determining the areas and tangents of curves. The most celebrated of these is the method given for the determination of tangents to curves" (Sotheran). Isaac Barrow (October 1630 - 4 May 1677) was an English Christian theologian, and mathematician who is generally given credit for his early role in the development of infinitesimal calculus; in particular, for the discovery of the fundamental theorem of calculus. His work centered on the properties of the tangent; Barrow was the first to calculate the tangents of the kappa curve. Isaac Newton was a student of Barrow's, and Newton went on to develop calculus in a modern form. In 1662 he was made professor of geometry at Gresham College, and in 1663 was selected as the first occupier of the Lucasian chair at Cambridge. During his tenure of this chair he published two mathematical works of great learning and elegance, the first on geometry and the second on optics. In 1669 he resigned his professorship in favour of Isaac Newton. In 1669 he issued his 'Lectiones XVIII,' which would come to be known as the 'Lectiones Opticae.' The 'Lectiones Geometricae' were first published in 1670, and the two volumes together, revised, corrected, edited and slightly expanded by Collins and Newton, were first published in 1674 (the edition offered here). It is said in the preface that Newton revised and corrected the 'Lectiones Opticae.' In this 1674 first complete edition, the title and preliminary matter for the 'Lectiones Geometricae' were supposed to be cancelled. Indeed, ESTC states that "no copy is recorded with the original second title page retained." In addition to the new title-page, this copy actually contains the uncancelled preliminary material. Barrows work was edited by John Collins and Isaac Newton, and corrected and revised by Issac Newton, thus constituting one of Newton's earliest publications. Very Good.

"Discours du mouvement local" was published [in this second edition] with additional remarks designed to counter the charge of Cartesianism. Yet although Pardies clearly derived a geat deal from the Cartesian heritage and felt obliged to defend himself in this regard, Cartesianism was not his principal source. Through the "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society" he was directly informed of the advences of English science (quadrature of hyperbola and the competition concerning the laws of impact); and in Paris he closely followed the work of the newly established Académie Royale des Sciences and especially that of Huygens, with whom he was in personal contact". DSB 10, 314. *****. In-12. Collation : 191 pp. Veau brun, dos à nerfs orné, tranches mouchetées. (Reliure de l'époque.).
