With a large folding map (plate size 54.5 x 42 cm). Contemporary paper wrappers, with parts of the publisher's original printed-paper spine.

      - Muller, America 1086; Sabin 38745. First edition of Lambrecht's account of the Dutch colony in America up to its cession to England in 1674, as well as an account of the fate of the Dutch settlers after the British takeover. It covers the discovery and exploration of the regions around present-day New York, the Dutch relations with the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts Bay, and the English takeover. New York was beginning to establish itself as America's leading city in the early nineteenth century, and a growing interest in its history made the history of the Dutch colony topical. The folding map, entitled "Kaart van Nieuw-Nederland" combines an up-to-date cartographic image based on Aaron Arrowsmith's 1804 Map of America, with historical data from maps in Arent Roggeveen's 1675 sea atlas and Arnoldus Montanus's 1671 atlas of America. In 1817 Lambrechtsen (1752-1823) was made an honorary member of the New York Historical Society, which published an English translation of his book in 1841.With occasional minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition with the final integral blank leaf and virtually untrimmed. The sprinkled paper wrappers, covering only the sides, remain in very good condition, but the spine retains only tattered parts of the original paper spine with the printed title, leaving the sewing and the folds of the quires partly visible. A fascinating Dutch history of Dutch America. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Erneuerte Hauß- und Feld-Apotheck, oder Stadt- und Land-Artzney-Buch, ...Frankfurt am Main, Martin Hallervord; Königsberg, printed by Johann Andreae, 1674. With engraved illustrated title-page. With: (2) SCHRÖDER, Johan (and others?). [Pharmacological recipes in manuscript].[Westfalen?, ca. 1674]. A manuscript pharmacopoeia in German, written in dark brown ink on paper, in a Latin hand with gothic influences. 2 works in 1 volume. Narrow 8vo (18 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary vellum.

Ad 1: VD17 23:242182F (3 copies); Waller 3622; cf. Krivatsy 4870 & 4871. Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). The first edition, in folio format, was extensively revised for the present second edition and the illustrated engraved title-page added. With Schröders owner's inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. The Gogler lacks leaf L5 (pp. 169 & 170). With leaf 2[pi]1 of the manuscript detached, minor marginal damage to the printed title-page repaired and occasional minor stains, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and dirty, with some cracks in the backstrip. A remarkable primary source for medicinal practices among the common people of Westfalen ca. 1674.

He was one of the foremost intelligencers of Europe of the seventeenth century, with a network of correspondents to rival those of Fabri de Peiresc, Marin Mersenne and Ismaël Boulliau. At the foundation of the Royal Society he took on the task of foreign correspondence, as the first Secretary. Born in Bremen, Germany, he trained in theology and received his degree on 2 November 1639. His movements during the 1640s are unclear, but he is thought to have worked as a tutor in England for much of the decade. In 1648 he left England and travelled, returning in the end to Bremen. He went to London in 1653, as a diplomat; and settled in England of the Interregnum. He forged a strong relationship with his lifelong patron Robert Boyle, and was tutor to Boyle's nephew Richard Jones. Oldenburg married his second wife, Dora Katherina Dury (1654–77), the daughter of John Dury. Either through John Milton, whom he met early in his mission, or through Lady Ranelagh, sister to Boyle and the mother of Richard Jones, Oldenburg gained entry to an important intellectual circle, including Samuel Hartlib, whose extensive web of correspondents Oldenburg was to take over, John Dury who became his father-in-law, and others such as William Petty. Among Oldenburg's correspondents at this time was Baruch Spinoza, who he was introduced to on a trip to the Netherlands, and to whom he presented a volume of writings on scientific topics by Boyle. After the Restoration he became an early member (original fellow) of the Royal Society (founded in 1660), and served as its first secretary along with John Wilkins, maintaining an extensive network of scientific contacts through Europe. He also became the founding editor of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Oldenburg began the practice of sending submitted manuscripts to experts who could judge their quality before publication. This was the beginning of both the modern scientific journal and the practice of peer review. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society continues today and is the longest running scientific journal in the world. He was briefly imprisoned in the Tower as a suspected spy in 1667, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Oldenburg's correspondence was linked to support from the politician Sir Joseph Williamson; in part Oldenburg supplied Williamson with intelligence information. Oldenburg enjoyed good health in his lifetime, but he fell seriously ill on 3 September 1677, and he died two days thereafter at his Pall Mall, London home. He was interred on 7 September at St Mary the Virgin, Bexley. His widow died ten days later. (Wikipedia)

Quarto (235 × 189 mm). Contemporary full vellum, remnant of ink lettering to the spine. 71 etched plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, plate 6 was originally duplicated and the duplication corrected at the time by the imposition of the correct plate numbered 7, over it, so neatly is this done that it is barely visible from the recto. A little rubbed, the front free endpaper somewhat creased and with some loss at the lower corner, light browning, a few faint damp-stains in margins, occasional finger-soiling, some minor chipping at the edges, but overall very good. First edition of this renowned manual of self-defence. The work is particularly notable for the telling combination of de Hooghe's clear, but nonetheless dramatic, illustrations, and the simplicity and lucidity of Petter's written instructions. Prof. Sydney Anglo describes it as "historically speaking, the most important treatise on unarmed combat ever printed ... the finest of all wrestling books and deservedly the most famous" (The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe, p.190). While Eli Steenput, in the introduction to his English translation (Journal of Western Martial Art, October 2000), remarks that "It is probably unique in presenting an effective and complete unarmed combat system in a format from which it would be actually possible to learn". In themselves de Hooghe's plates are remarkable, fully justifying Otto Benesch's description of him as "not only the greatest Dutch etcher of the period, but the only great artist Holland produced at the end of her classical era … one of the greatest illustrators of all time, comprehending within himself all the various faculties of the universal mind of the Baroque". Wrestling-master Petter's school of practical self-defence for the bourgeoisie on the dangerous streets of Amsterdam, clearly differentiates the book from the earlier tradition of wrestling books, such as the Ringbüchlein, or Fabian von Auerswald's Ringer-Kunst, where smiling contestants are shown engaged in a sporting contest. Iinstead the plates portray well-dressed gentlemen tangling with grimacing, sometimes armed, street toughs. Petter died shortly before publication, and the book was seen through the press by his widow, and his pupil Robert Cors, who explains the principles that lay behind his master's method; "The forces which were lent to the human understanding by nature, are not present alike in each art, and if they were, then they would nevertheless not be developed in the same way. Of two arts one is usually superior, this is in general the one based on knowledge. Most people do not seriously consider how they could secure themselves against all manner ofd abuse or assault, as might be levelled against them by evil-hearted villains, eager for violence. Our wrestler has studied this problem, first developing his mind, then looking for effective strikes and holds, by which one can defend against violent attacks with shoves, punches, or a knife. These he has practised diligently, and, to benefit the community, he has decided finally to compile this instructional book … Cruel Death has untimely taken him from us, before he could bring this project to conclusion. The images had already been prepared during his life, ordered and provided with explanatory captions to instruct the studious wrestler". By way of advertisement, Cors mentions that he is "prepared to instruct interested parties in these techniques for reasonable remuneration and be reached at the Witwe house of Nicolaes Petter on the Prinsengracht in the Gustavusburgh not far from the combat academy". Far from common institutionally, just 20 or so copies world-wide, with most of them in the Netherlands, and very rarely encountered commercially, particularly so in such wonderful, unrestored contemporary condition. This copy with an early anonymous bookplate and the later plate of Amsterdam doctor and bibliophile, Bob Luza, whose collection was sold in 1981.

Enquiries touching the diversity of languages and religions, through the chief parts of the world. Written by Edw. Brerewood, sometime professor of astronomy in Gresham College in London

London: printed for Samuel Mearne, John Martyn, and Henry Herringman, 1674. Fourth edition, the first in octavo; 8vo, pp. [32], 252, [3]; full contemporary calf, sprinkled edges; extremities worn, spine with a few chips out, but in all a good, sound copy. "The earliest book to suggest the now accepted theory of the Asiatic origin of the American aborigine." It went through four editions in England 1614-1674, and six others on the continent. "The author devotes a portion of the book to the first peopling of America, claiming the Tartars as their forefathers. His account of religion in America is very curious, especially the part where he describes an old priest who baptized 700,000! Chapter XXII relates to the idolatries practiced in America" (Sabin).

Kunsthistoricus Otto Benesch noemde hem ?not only the greatest Dutch etcher of the second half of the century, but the only great artist Holland produced at the end of her classical era. He was one of the greatest illustrators of all times and comprehends within himself all the various faculties of the universal mind of the Baroque".Prijs: ? 3.650,- (incl. lijst).

Wieder-errungene Freyheit.

VD17 23:304621K.         VITAE REVERENDIS PATRIS F. HIERONYMI SAVONAROLAE FERRARIENSIS, ORD. PRAEDICATORUM (VOLS. I-II)

Paris: Ludovici Billaine, 1674. Hardcover. Bound in full vellum. Two volumes. 3 7/8" x 6 1/4". Fold-out plates. Books in very good condition. Covers somewhat soiled. Corners bumped. Title cards on spines in excellent condition in red and black with gilt stamping. Bound with five raised bands. Some deterioration at ends of gutters on front and back of both books. Extensive period ink handwriting on all endpapers. Otherwise, a set of clean and tight books in very good condition. Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1470–1533) was an Italian nobleman and philosopher, the nephew of famed Renaissance humanist, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Like his uncle he devoted himself chiefly to philosophy, but made it subject to the Bible, though in his treatises, De studio divinæ et humanæ sapientiæ and particularly in the six books entitled Examen doctrinæ vanitatis gentium, he depreciates the authority of the philosophers, above all of Aristotle. He wrote a detailed biography of his uncle, published in 1496, and another of Girolamo Savonarola, of whom he was a follower. The two-volume set here is the latter biography of Savonarola, an Italian Dominican friar and preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He was known for his prophecies of civic glory, the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule and the exploitation of the poor. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood and a new Cyrus from the north who would reform the Church.

Liber Placitandi: A Book of Special Pleadings: Containing Precedents of Pleas in Abatement, Declarations, Barrs, Replications, Rejoynders, Demurrers, Issues, And Judgments, In the Now Most Common and Ordinary Actions, Viz. Actions Upon the Case, Actions Upon Statutes, Account, Covenant, Debt, Prohibitions, Replevin, Scire Facias, And Trespass. Also, The Forms of Entries in Writs of Error, Utlaries, General Issues, And Judgments, Intended for the Benefit of the Students of the Common Law, and For the Use of Practicing Clerks and Attorneys. Together With a Table. London: Printed for J. Place, and T. Bassett, 1674. [iv], 460, [28] pp. Folio (8-1/4" x 12-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, recently rebacked in period style with raised bands, lettering piece and blind ornaments, hinges repaired. A few scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to edges, repairs to upper corners, lower corners bumped and somewhat worn. Moderate toning to text, occasional faint dampstaining, some soiling to title page. Early owner signature to front free endpaper, brief early annotations to a few leaves, interior otherwise clean. * Only edition. Some pleader's manuals, such as Rastell's Book of Entries (1564), were semi-official compilations by single authors. Others, such as the Liber Placitandi, were collections drawn from various authors. Sometimes cited as Thompson's Entries, it was first published in 1671. One of its sections, "Actions sur le Case," is notable as the first treatment of torts as a separate category. Holdsworth considers it a fine example of the genre. The preface assures the reader that "[m]ost of the pleadings are Modern, having occurr'd in the Court of King's Bench, since his Majesties Happy Restauration; whereof many received Approbation under the hands of some of the best pleaders of the Age: (as by their Originals may be Attested).": To The Reader [iii].         Natural History of the Passions.

[London]: In the Savoy, Printed by T. N. for James Magnes in Russell-Street, 1674. First edition.. Homemade repair of a calf patch at the head of the spine in the style of an earlier repair, with a recent red morocco label to the spine; some occasional damp-staining and some rubbing and wear; a very good to good copy.. 8vo, contemporary sheep, [48], 188 pages. From the royalist physician and neo-Epicurean Walter Charleton (1619-1707), an important work engaging in part with Descartes and Hobbes, on the relationship between emotions and healthóor as Charleton has it here, ìthough it be undoubtedly true, that the Reasonable Soul hath her intellectual Delights and Disquiets apart, such as are proper to her simple and spiritual nature: yet is it no less true, that those other Delights and Disquiets that are common to her with the Body, depend upon the affections.î Once thought to be based on J.F. Senaultís De líusage des passions (1641), this is instead an original English work; see R. A. Hunter and E. Cuttler, ìWalter Charletonís Natural History of the Passions (1674) and J. F. Senaultís The Use of the Passions (1649): A case of mistaken identity,î Journal of the History of Medicine and the Allied Sciences, vol. 13, 1958, and Emily Booth, ìA Subtle and Mysterious Machineî: The Medical World of Walter Charleton (1619-1707), Dordrecht: Springer, 2005. Wing C-3684A. The two terminal blanks appear here possibly to be employed as the rear paste-down and free endpaper. Contemporary signature of James Twigg, ìhis Bookî across the head of the title page.

3.850,- (incl. lijst).

Holograph Manuscript fragment from an Essay or a short story entitled "Communipaw" with a clipped signature pasted at the bottom of the text

np, nd. c. 90 words, with emendations. 12mo (13 x 8.75 cm). Tipped onto a larger sheet. c. 90 words, with emendations. 12mo (13 x 8.75 cm). After the last English takeover of New Netherland in 1674 Communipaw became part of the Province of New Jersey, Bergen County, though it retained its Dutch character for hundreds of years. Washington Irving visited it often (at least once with future US president Martin van Buren) for inspiration. Writing in the early 19th century, he often referred to Communipaw as being the stronghold of traditional Dutch culture.

        Tracts consisting of observations

printed by E. Flesher for R. Davis : 1674 : London : 8vo: A4 (-A1) B-N8, 99 of 100 leaves, pp. [6] 51 [3] 6 [2] 5 [3] 11 [3] 39 [3] 5 [3] 11 [3] 27 [3] 14, without the blank A1. : A work consisting of 10 tracts describing Boyle's work in thermodynamics, the desalination of sea water, and experiments with a new hygrometer. The first four tracts are sequels to his Experimental history of cold (1665); they describe experiments on the expansive force of freezing water and various freezing mixtures measured with spirit thermometers. The next tract is the one from which the volume takes its title, 'Observations and experiments about the saltness of the sea.' Boyle was very interested in the practical problems of desalination and much of this tract describes experiments to discover a practical method which could be used at sea. As a result of this piece Boyle became involved in a long correspondence, some of which was printed in Fitzgerald's Saltwater sweetened (1683). The next tract is 'Relations about the bottom of the sea,' followed by 'Of the natural and preternatural state of bodies'. The three final tracts describe experiments and observations made with Boyle's hygrometer. This used a sponge suspended from one arm of a balance, an arrangement he preferred to the more common hygrometers pioneered by the Accademia del Cimento, which relied on the expansion and contraction of vegetable or animal fibres. Boyle says that the problem with such hygrometers, using lute strings or oat beards, is that after a while their contractile power is altered or impaired (see Daumas p. 60).Typical of the books from the Edgerston library, this copy is in very good original condition in a simple unlettered sheep trade-binding and with an unassuming printed label rather than the engraved booklabel that one might expect from a major country house collection. The label was probably printed for John Rutherfurd (1748-1834) who inherited the Edgerston estate in the Scottish borders in 1764.

First edition of Boileau and works with the term containing 9 satires, epistles 4, the first four songs of the lectern and the Treaty of the sublime. The edition also contains a new foreword and a new preface. Beautiful print in italics. There exists an edition of parts dating from 1670 which Boileau Boileau speaks without mentioning the date, but that seems not found; Brunet cites the comment, without giving a date. Full sheepskin marbled time. Back to nerves Jansenist. Piece black title. Rubbed together. 2 corners bumped. He misses the second sheet completing the privilege (last lines indicating the date). The two frontispieces are also missing, one must appear before the title, the other before the lectern. Title page with dirt.
