BLASIUS, Gerardus (BLAES, Gerard Leendertszoon).
Amsterdam: Caspar Commelin, 1673. First edition. First edition, rare, and a superb copy bound in contemporary red morocco, of this important work of human and comparative anatomy by the Dutch physician, chemist, and anatomist Gerard Blaes. The first 167 pages are devoted to human anatomy, followed by the description of the anatomy of various animals. "In the 1673 volume Blasius describes the anatomy of the following fourteen types: tortoise, duck, pigeon, ox, sheep, pig, dog, cat, civet-cat, fox, rat, hare and monkey ... Blasius' observations on human anatomy are followed by eight-five pages [168-252] devoted to the anatomy of the dog [illustrated with 12 plates]. This is the first comprehensive and original treatise on a vertebrate since the publication of Ruini's volume on the horse in 1598. His reason for writing it was that owing to the difficulty of obtaining human bodies for dissection substitutes had to be found, of which the dog was one. It was hence imperative to acquire an exact knowledge of the points in which the dog resembled and differed from man. His approach to the dog, therefore, is not as a comparative but as a human anatomist" (Cole, A History of Comparative Anatomy (1949), pp. 150 & 154-5). The Miscellanea end with 15 pages of practical notes on rare cases observed during human dissections. ABPC/RBH record only the present copy. OCLC lists ten copies in US. A flavour of Blasius' treatment of animal anatomy can be gathered from his account of the tortoise. "The heart of the tortoise, he says, consists of but two chambers - an auricle and a ventricle ... SCHURMAN, Anna Marie van & ARNDIO, Josua & ROHAN, Henri de.
Altonæ ad Albine & Rostochi 1673 & 1668 & 1668, Cornelii van der Meulen & Joachimum Wildium. TP + 3-207 + [208] = Lectori S. + Errata. First Edition.[bound after]TP + 3-135, First Latin Edition [bound after]TP + [i] = Dedication page + [ii] = Poem + [iii] = Ad Lectorem + [iv] = Tabula Discursuum + [1]-194 + [195]-[200] = Hymnus + 1 blank leaf, Editio Altera.By 1664, at the age of 57, Schurman was completely disgusted with her life, her fame and the constant stream of visitors who imposed so severely on her time. At this crossroad, she met the Pietist, Jean de Labadie, a former Jesuit who had converted to Protestantism and then founded a contemplative religious sect known as Labadism. Anna Maria was fascinated by Labadie and his ideas and she completely abandoned her former life and joined his religious community. Nine years later, she published this autobiography, taking her title from Luke 10:42 where Martha's sister, Mary, "chooses the better part" by sitting at Christ's feet rather than helping out in the kitchen. The autobiography encompassed the whole of her life up to that point, providing an excellent window into contemporary attitudes and practices (most especially in relation to women) along with a clear exposition of the religious ferment that so permeated Dutch society throughout that time. Anna Marie's late conversion to Labadism did, of course, color much of her presentation but the book is, as noted by her biographer Una Birch, characterized by "a sincere effort after self-portrayal, and of which the pages were only written after prolonged self-examination and … [Click Below for Full Description]

This dramatic map is Seutter's version of Allard's map, Totius Neobelgii Nova et Accuratissima Tabula. It includes a faithful rendition of the famous Restitutio View of Manhattan which originally commemorated the Dutch short-lived recapture of New Amsterdam in 1673. The view depicts the town as seen directly from the east. On the right is a wall that eventually became Wall Street with its guardhouse and gate. Adjacent to the wall are new settlements and the Collect Pond (P), used to collect fresh water. Seutter's version has updated the scene above the view to reflect the British colonization. A long procession of natives carry American goods to the English monarch, presumably George II, who is being attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of coins. Shows an elaborate scene depicting natives and gods presenting tribute to the English monarch George II. The course of the Delaware and Hudson are separated, unlike early editions of the map. This is the first map in the series to show the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania with a printed line, as earlier examples had previously left the delineation of the boundaries to the colorist. Philadelphia is shown as a set of houses in relief, rather than a ground plan. The map itself is from the influential Jansson-Visscher series, which formed the basis for the mapping of the Atlantic seaboard and New England for nearly one hundred years. The cartography follows Visscher's modifications and includes much new information reflecti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mogrovejo, Toribio Alfonso de (1538-1606) translated by Francis Harold (?-1685)
Typis Josephi Corvi, Romæ (Rome). [32]+xxxiv+379+[22] pages with portrait plate facing page 1. Folio (12 3/4" x 9") bound later stiff vellum with five raised spine bands. (Volume fort rare"--LeClerc 1757. European Americana 673/105; Medina BHA 1547; Palau 112325; Sabin 30415) First Latin edition. Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo (16 November 1538 – 23 March 1606) was a Spanish prelate of the Catholic Church who served as the Archbishop of Lima from 1579 until his death. He first studied in the humanities and law before serving as a professor and later as the Grand Inquisitor at the behest of King Philip II. His piousness and learning had reached the ears of the king who appointed him to that position which was considered unusual since he had no previous government or judicial experience. His noted work for the Inquisition earned him praise from the king who nominated him for the vacant Lima archdiocese. The pope confirmed this despite his protests. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1578 in Granada (after four consecutive weeks of receiving the minor orders) and Pope Gregory XIII named him on 16 May 1579 as the Archbishop of Lima; he received his episcopal consecration in August 1580 from the Archbishop of Seville Cristóbal Rojas Sandoval. The new archbishop first arrived in Paita on 12 May 1581 which was 600 miles – or 970 kilometers – from Lima. He began his new mission travelling to Lima on foot while he baptized and taught the natives. He was enthroned in his new see a week later. He produced a trilingual catechism in Spanish as well as in the native languages Quechua and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vetancurt, Agustin de
Mexico: Francisco Rodriguez Lupercio, 1673. [6],49[i.e., 50],[8] leaves. Small quarto. 20th-century vellum boards. Titlepage trimmed at lower margin, affecting imprint and border. Slight worming at fore-edge, not affecting text. Contemporary manuscript annotations scattered throughout. Light tanning, occasional foxing and dust soiling. Very good. In a half morocco box. First edition of this rare and highly significant Nahuatl grammar. In the 17th century the study of Nahuatl (commonly called Aztec) reached a pinnacle, springing from the Herculean, fruitful efforts of 16th-century Franciscan scholars and the perspicacious, intuitive understanding of the early 17th-century Jesuit linguist, Father Carochi. Later in the century another major figure was to appear: Agustin de Vetancurt (1633-1700), a distinguished Franciscan scholar and writer, the author of the TEATRO MEXICANO, and vicar of the chapel of San Jose de los Naturales in the Franciscan monastery in Mexico City, in which latter role he perfected his understanding of Nahuatl. This work represents Vetancurt's first expansion and improvement on earlier Nahuatl grammars. The very important grammar is completed by a comprehensive index, a short catechism, and instructions on the commandments and the sacraments of the Catholic Church, all in Nahuatl. The first part of the text expresses Vetancurt's important insight that Nebrija's classical, early 16th-century paradigm for the study of European Languages, specifically Latin and Spanish, had its shortcomings when applied to the major New World language under scrutiny, ev … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

TESAURO Emanuele
Torino, Zapatta, 1673. [Click Below for Full Description]

REPTON, Humphry.
BAL 2734; H.F. Mellgrave, Modern architectural theory, a historical survey, 1673-1968 (2005), pp. 60-61; Tooley, Coloured plates 399. First edition of "Repton's longest and most important work" (BAL) on landscape design. "Repton became the century's most important practitioner of picturesque gardening" (Mallgrave). This work can be seen as an answer to the criticisms of Uvedale Price and Payne Knight concerning the term "picturesque", which "for Repton still meant the pictorial, the wild and the rugged in nature" (Mallgrave), as opposed to Price and Knight, who thought of it as an aesthetic category next to beautiful and sublime. The many beautiful plates depict, among others, a view from the fort near Bristol, Wentworth Yorkshire, the pavilion and green house for a Gothic mansion, and a map of Bayham. Some of the hand-coloured plates have moveable overlays, which show a location with or without added buildings or trees etc. Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was one of the last great English landscape designers of the 18th century and often regarded as the successor to Capability (Lancelot) Brown.Corners of binding slightly bumped; spine slightly worn at hinge. Otherwise a good copy, only slightly browned. [Attributes: First Edition]

BLASIUS, Gerardus (BLAES, Gerard Leendertszoon).
Amsterdam: Caspar Commelin, 1673. He evidently saw … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamburg, Joh. The only surviving work of Hierocles, who studied under Plutarch, was his commentary on Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It included a treatise on providence and fate and his arguments against predestination. However, his views did not favor the providence of a divine God, rather focused on irrational worldly needs. Although Christianity was not mentioned in his works, his writings have been used to reconcile traditions between Greek orthodox and Christian beliefs. AUGUSTIN D'HIPPONE.
A Lion, chés Jean Baptiste de Ville, 1673. - in-16. Titre gravé. 6 feuillets. 611 pages. (14,5x9cm). Pleine basane de l'époque. Dos à berfs orné avec titre doré. Tranches jaspées. Reliure très frottée. Coiffes manquantes. Epidermures et taches sur les plats. Une charnière légèrement fendue à l'extrémité. Feuillets brunis.

(Schmieder). - Alter Stempel auf dem Titel. Durchgehend unterschiedlich gebräunt. Einband gering fleckig und berieben. Insgesamt gut erhalten. - VD17 39:116792A; Dünnhaupt 70; Ferguson II, 107; Bolton 1016; Schmieder 419; Brüning 2268
