(Colour) (PILES, Roger de)
Paris: Nicolas Langlois, 1673. Roger de Piles was an important French art critic and theorist. This first edition of his treatise on colouring opened the famous "debate of the colourists" which dominated French esthetic thought at the end of the seventeenth century. The argument which followed divided its participants into two camps with, on one side, an established classical school which held drawing and design to be the essential qualities of great art, while an opposing camp of "modernists", lead by de Piles, held colouring and the effects of light and shadow to be the most essential elements of pictorial art. Raphael and Poussin stood as the ultimate models for the partisans of design while Rubens and Titian were championed by the colourists. De Piles' DIALOGUE SUR LE COLORIS (Dialogue On Colouring) was seminal in defining the theoretical viewpoint of this latter, ultimately triumphant, group. He emphasised, in particular, the use of chiaroscuro and first introduced the term clair-obscur to identify this technique. The theories that de Piles first published here influenced art historical discussions long afterwards and find echoes in other later aesthetic arguments between classical and modern schools of art. As usual, his DIALOGUE SUR LE COLORIS is found here bound with another work, in this case the first edition of Sébastien Le Clerc's FIGURES D'ACADEMIE POUR APRENDRE À DÉSINER, also published by Langlois. Le Clerc's work offers a series of muscular male nude studies of mythological or classical figures. It is now reasonably rare, with OCLC locating 12 cop … [Click Below for Full Description]

Full Book Title: The History and Mystery of the Venereal Lues Concisely abstracted and Modelled (occasionally) from serious strict Perpensions, and critical Collations of divers repugning Sentiments and contrary Assertions of Eminent Physicians: English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian dissenting Writers. Convincing By Argument and Proof the Traditional Notions touching this Grand Evil, and common reputed Practice grounded thereon, as erroneous and unfound. Solving the most dubious and important Quæries concerning the abstruse Nature, difficult and deceitful Cures of this Popular Malady. With Animadversions upon various Methods of Cure, practised in those several Nations. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 160 x 100 mms., pp. [viii], 215 [216 blank], recently rebound in full antique-style panelled calf, morocco label, new end-papers; title-page soiled, but text otherwise clean. A fine copy. Everard Maynwaring (born 1627/8 died?) received his Bachelor of Medicine from Cambridge in 1645, aged 17. This study of venereal disease, specifically syphilis, associates its presence in Europe with the year 1492 and "the conduct of Columbus into America, to discover that part of the unknown World." The Spaniards picked up "this Indian Commodity" because they "eased themselves of some of their "superfluous Women (of the worst sort we may well imagine), such as were over-ridden and notably seasoned with the Indian Itch...." The Spaniards passed it to the French and thence to the rest of the known world. Roy Porter, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLUMIER, Charles.
Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1673. First edition. First edition, first issue with the incorrect date MDCCXIII on the title page (but the correct date on the colophon). This is a fine copy in an untouched contemporary binding. Plumier was the first 'modern' botanist to describe the flora of the Caribbean at a time when natural history underwent significant qualitative changes as a result of European expansion and transatlantic contacts. He made three separate expeditions to the Caribbean, in 1689, 1693, and 1695. On the first of these he accompanied physician Joseph Surian; on the last two he travelled alone as botaniste du roi. He discovered, drew, and described hundreds of new species, and left behind over 6,000 detailed drawings of West Indian plants. Many of Plumier's generic names were adopted by Linnaeus and are still in use today, among them Fuchsia, Caesalpinia, and Magnolia. The present work, based on his second trip, was his first botanical publication. Included are many plates showing ferns and clematis. "Le Père Plumier, a monk in the order of St. Francesco di Paula, was an important botanical traveller. Tournefort and he became friends and they herborized together throughout the Midi. After that, Plumier's travels included the Antilles and several long voyages to other islands in the West Indies and to America, where he discovered, drew, and described hundreds of new plants, many of which are shown in his own books, though much of his work had to remain unpublished until Boerhaave and Jean Burmann were able to edit part of his papers, and publish them as the Plan … [Click Below for Full Description]
