BLAEU, Willem Janzoon
Bologna,: Pietro Todeschi,, [1673, or later].. Set of four hand-coloured engraved wall maps, each printed on four sheets, joined. The Blaeu set of four wall maps of the known continents represents the pinnacle of Dutch Golden Age decorative cartography. Wall maps occupied a prominent place in Dutch culture, as indicators of affluence and intellectual curiosity, as demonstrated by their appearance in several of Johannes Vermeer's paintings. The leading scholar and scientist, Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), remarked how he employed his own set of Blaeu's wall maps of the continents as a tool to enlighten his children: “To encourage them even more, I had the four parts of the world by Willem Blaeu mounted in my entrance hall, where they often played, in order to provide them with a fixed image of the world and its division”. America Blaeu's depiction of the New World was “one of the most influential maps of America ever made” (Burden). He used the voyages of Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Gua de Monts as the basis for the coast of Nova Scotia, while New England is still tentative, presumably reflecting the lack of accurate information from English settlers. The width of South America is exaggerated. The title cartouche at the lower right is supported by the first Europeans to reach the New World: Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Below are portrait medallions of four contemporary circumnavigators: Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Thomas Cavendish, and Olivier van Noort. To the left, the King of Spain rides over the Atlantic followed by a procession of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCILLA Saverio
[Click Below for Full Description]

Double-page engraved map (432 by 554mm to the neatline, full margins showing the platemark). Separately issued, and exceptionally rare, this is Thornton's first published chart; the first printed map to show the activities of the Hudson's Bay Company; and the second printed map to show features of Lederer's discoveries. "This map, formerly dated tentatively 'ca. 1680,' was advertised for sale in the London Gazette for 20-24 February 1673." (Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps, 89). A superb map of New England, Hudson Bay, eastern Canada, with an inset of the American southeast and mid-Atlantic coastline within a fine asymmetrical rococo cartouche lower left, and the title within another upper right, decorated with native animals, a galleon and three compass roses. The inset of the southern colonies is not some "casual insertion, some effort has been put into making the map as up to date as possible. . . The results of Lederer's recent voyages published in 1672 are incorporated here with the inclusion of Savana and Deserta Arenosa" (Burden 432). John Thornton was one of the leading English chart-makers, active between 1667 and 1708. He was apprenticed to John Burston in the Draper's Company in 1656; at the time, and despite the name, the Draper's Company was the epicentre for t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hayes; CAMBRIDGE; 1673. [Herbert's 712.] A fine example for a collector desirous of a representative copy of the crowning jewel of English Bible translation and one of the most desired antiquarian books of all time. The American Bible Society has a similar example with 160 rare steel engravings from cuts by F. H. Van Hove present within the text; this copy has TWO HUNDRED RARE ENGRAVINGS. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than five years and was laboriously attended to by over fifty translators and researchers. Six separate groups were assigned a specific section of the Scriptures and each made a preliminary translation under the direction of Lancelot Andrewes, Edward Lively and John Harding. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed, reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson.
Francisco Rodriguez Lupercio, 1673. In the 17th century the study of Nahuatl (commonly called Aztec) reached a pinnacle, springing from the herculean, fruitful efforts of 16th-century Franciscan scholars and the perspicacious, intuitive understanding of the early-17th-century Jesuit linguist, Father Carochi. Later in the century another major figure was to appear: Agustín de Vetancurt (1633-1700), a distinguished Franciscan scholar and writer, the author of the Teatro mexicano, and vicar of the chapel of San José de los Naturales in the Franciscan monastery in Mexico City, in which latter role he perfected his understanding of Nahuatl. At the end of this highly important and extremely rare grammar are found a comprehensive index, a short catechism, and instructions on the commandments and the sacraments of the Catholic Church, being => all in Nahuatl. Part One of the text expresses Vetancurt's important insight that Nebrija's classical, early-16th-century paradigm for the study of European languages, specifically Latin and Spanish, had its shortcomings when applied to the major New World language under scrutiny -- though in the end he resigns himself to using that five-part organization, which was the one most familiar to his readers. The printer has enlivened the typography with => a good woodcut of Saint Anthony on the title-page, a few elegant large woodcut initials, and head- and tailpieces composed of printer's ornaments. We note that virtually all bibliographies have failed to state that leaf E1 is misfolioed as 14 (it should be 15 and the error is not corrected … [Click Below for Full Description]

ALESSANDRI, Alessandro
1673. Alexander ab Alexandro (1461-1523) was an important Neapolitan lawyer during the turn of the 16th-century. He practiced law in both Naples and in Rome. His main written work "Genilium Gierum", is a collection of life stories as well as important details on Roman law, philology, and general learning, written in the same style as Gellius's 'Attic Nights'. One of the more humorous stories Alexandro shares in this book is of his home in Rome. He claimed it to be a haunted house and relates many of the bizarre experiences to the ghost living in his house. This first Hackiana edition is a beautiful printing of this famous Italian law book. HIEROCLES, of Alexandria
1673. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Hierocles of Alexandria was a 5th-century Greek writer. The only surviving work of Hierocles, who studied under Plutarch, was his commentary on Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It included a treatise on providence and fate and his arguments against predestination. However, his views did not favor the providence of a divine God, rather focused on irrational worldly needs. Although Christianity was not mentioned in his works, his writings have been used to reconcile traditions between Greek orthodox and Christian beliefs. (Mozley). [Attributes: First Edition]

ALESSANDRI, Alessandro
1673. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask.
