du Fresnoy
Paris: 1673. [Click Below for Full Description]

MILLERD, James.
Bristol: James Millerd, & London: John Overton & Thomas Wall, 1673. Two sheets conjoined, total 305 x 705mm. Repaired tear. An elevated prospect of Bristol from the south, with Aston and Clifton on the left horizon, the Royal Fort in the centre and Horsfield & Ashley on the right. The title is on a banderole in the centre, with the arms of two Earls of Bristol underneath, with space for a third. In the top corners are the arms of Charles II and his Queen, Catherine of Braganza, with the arms of the City of Bristol and the Society of the Merchants of Bristol underneath. In the bottom corners are two verses in Latin, keys of Churches and other landmarks. Along the bottom is an advert for Millerd's four-sheet map of Bristol. Just above that is an oddity: a dedication to the major and aldermen of the city has had curtains engraved over the top, probably because Millerd did not receive the civic recognition he felt was his due. The example in the Bristol Museums Galleries has the same feature. Millerd's three works were first published between 1670 and 1677, the other two being maps of Bristol. He is also recorded as being a mercer and a 'Guardian of the Poor', appointed to administer the poor laws in the city. WORMS & BAYNTON-WILLIAMS: British Map Engravers, p. 450.

Folio, pp. [xii], 219 [220 blank, 221 - 236 Index]. 2 volumes in 1, attractively bound in full contemporary plum morocco, gilt border and ornaments on covers, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco; sometime rebacked, with old spine laid down and now very slightly cracked, gilt spine fading and slightly rubbed, but a good to very good copy. Ingelo (1620/12 - 1683), though born in Bristol, attended Edinburgh University and received his first degree in 1641. He was incorporated at Cambridge in 1644, held a number of posts there, but left in left in 1646 or 1647 to be minister of All Saints, Bristol. His congregation did not much like his dandified dress, nor his love of music (full disclosure: I became a "fan" when I read his declaration that "take away his Musick, take away his life"), and he was later appointed to a fellowship at Eton in1650. In his fine ODNB entry, Ian William McLellan records that he "accompanied Bulstrode Whitelocke on the Swedish embassy (1653-4) as one of his chaplains and as rector chori.... Whitelocke described Ingelo as 'a Person of admirable Abilities in the Work of the Ministery and ... a well Studied Scholar, perfect in the Latin tongue, Conversant in the Greek and Hebrew and could speak good Italian, he was much delighted in Mu … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALLAVICINO Ferrante
1673. Printers device on title pages of sections (9 in total), woodcut initials and ornaments throughout. 12mo (135 x 85mm). [6]ff, 76 pp.; 124pp; [6]ff, 70pp, [1]f; 206pp, [1]f; [6]ff, 209-588pp. Vellum over pasteboard, spine with gilt-stamped title (spine discoloured and crack at head). Villafranca [Amsterdam], [Daniel Elzevier], A clean copy, in very good condition, of the third Elzevier edition of the collected works of writer and satirist Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-44), said by Willems to be the most complete and most highly regarded. It is a reprint of the 1671 edition with a new title, and the additional La Pudicitia Schernita and La Rettorica Delle Puttane, both dated here 1673. According to Berghman the majority of copies are not divided into two parts as in this edition; and indeed, Willems makes no mention of the separate title page for the second part and 10-page life of Pallavicino that begins it (repeated from the first part). The earliest work in this collection, La Pudicitia Schernita, was first published in 1638, and it was this that first drew the attention of the papal censors who would proceed to place almost all of Pallavicino?s writings on the Index. Armorial bookplate of the Duke of Devonshire on front paste-down, and sticker with library shelfmark of Chatsworth, the seat of the Devonshires, on front free endpaper opposite. Tear to fore-edge of M1, not affecting text, otherwise in very good condition. Brunet IV, 327. Willems, 1487. Rahir 1593. Berghman (supplement), 393. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This is the excellent Britwell-Harmsworth-Goyder copy of Bunyan's remarkably rare statement of his belief that baptism by water was not necessary before a worshipper was allowed to take communion. This put him at odds with many of his fellow Baptists, and many of the arguments in this volume reply directly to the work written by Thomas Paul and published by William Kiffin concerning Bunyan?s "A Confession of my Faith and a Reason of my Practice."
