AUGUSTIN D'HIPPONE.
A Lion, chés Jean Baptiste de Ville, 1673. - in-16. Titre gravé. 6 feuillets. 611 pages. (14,5x9cm). Pleine basane de l'époque. Dos à berfs orné avec titre doré. Tranches jaspées. Reliure très frottée. Coiffes manquantes. Epidermures et taches sur les plats. Une charnière légèrement fendue à l'extrémité. Feuillets brunis. Exlibris manuscrit ancien. Exemplaire solide, relié à l'époque.

Plate: 'Prospect of Ye inner court of the Emperours Palace at Pekin'. This plate shows the inner court of the Emperial Palace in Beijing, China. With legend. Engraving and etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Watermark not visible on this sheet. Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from 'An Embassy from the East India Company of the United Provinces, to the Grand Tartar Cham, Emperor of China (.) Also an epistle of father John Adams (.) With an appendix of several remarks taken out of father Athanasius Kircher.', by John Ogilby, 2nd edition, published in London 1673. This is in fact a translation of the original work by Joan Nieuhof, first published in Dutch in 1665 ('Gezandtschap der Nederlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie .) The work was famous for its wealth of engravings, while the text was based on earlier (Jesuit) sources as well. In 1669 Ogilby published the first edition of the Dutch Embassy to China. This book combined Nieuhoff's original work with letters from the Jesuit father John Adams as well as a partial translation of Athanasius Kircher's China Illustrata (1667). The engravings in Nieuhof's original Dutch edition were based on illustrations done by artists in China and contained around 150 illustrations. Ogilby had many of them copied for his English translation, although he included around a third fewer pictures. The titles of the illustrations were changed into English and the artists, such as Wenceslaus Hollar, who did the copying, added their own signatures in place of the original artists'. This was standard prac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stempel, kaum fleckig, sonst gutes Exemplar.

Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Eisenberg (1685-1764) was a German horseman and artist, spent some of his youth at the manège of Saxe-Weimar before entering into the service of the Emperor. [KILLIGREW, Thomas]. JUVENAL, and PERSIUS:
Oxford, Printed by W. Downing for F. Oxlad Senior, J. Adams, and F. Oxlad Junior, 1673. Folio, [12], 341, [3, with the first and second blank] pages with numerous decorated initials, woodcuts and engravings in the text plus an engraved map and 3 engraved plates (one a folding panorama); the main title page is printed in red and black. Of more than passing interest is the fact that the large illustration (160 x 105 mm) on page 264 is printed upside down, and another example of it, cut to size, is mounted over it in the correct orientation. Antique-style full calf a little stained along the bottom inch or two; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner throughout; a very good copy. The first combined edition, with the second title page at page [285]. Significantly, the main title page carries the contemporary ownership signature in ink of Thomas Killigrew (1612-83), English dramatist and theatre manager. The two annotations and seven words underlined in pencil in Juvenal's Satire VII (pages 133-138) may well be in his hand.
