Bologna, Manolessi, 1673.In-12. Brunet I, 325. Breslauer & Folter 67. First edition of one of the earliest and most comprehensive select bibliographies of Italian literature. The work contains the author's autobiography (261 pp.), and the list of books in his library, a large number of which had been donated to him by scholars with whom he was in correspondence. An unusual feature of the catalogue is the arrangement in alphabetical order of donors, presumably done to attract more gifts; both parts are replete with biographical and bibliographical information. Although the work ends with letter C, and remained incomplete, it provides a very interesti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Esemplare attraente.

Bartoli Daniello
in Roma, Presso il Varese, 1673. 1673 In-folio (355x240mm), pp. (4), 534, (8), solida legatura ottocentesca m. pergamena con fregi in oro e titolo in oro su doppio tassello in pelle bicroma al dorso. Emblema gesuita al frontespizio. Timbro di duplicato di biblioteca in data 1816. Qualche fioritura e brunitura usuale. Ottimo esemplare. De Backer / Sommervogel, I, 978 e sgg. Brunet, I, 683. Graesse, I, p. 303. Gamba, 1773. A superb military work, noteworthy also for the costumes. This edition is identical to the first of 1670, except for name Turrini and the date 1673 at end.

Folio [33 x 21.5 cm], (6) ff., 44 pp., 154 numbered engraved plates. Bound in original blindstamped vellum over wooden boards, raised bands on spine, with title written in ink in an old hand, clasps and ties present. Some tiny wormholes in blank margin of engraved title and a few leaves; some minor handsoiling; small and light waterstain in upper margin of title and following leaves; typical toning and light browning seen in this volume, but rather less than usual; a few impressions of plates on the light side, or shaved with no loss to image. Generally a fresh copy with good strikes in a handsome original binding. Scarce second German edition and unusually fine copy, in its original blindstamped binding, of this supra-illustrated machinery book devoted to pumps, presses and milling machinery by the Nuremberg architect and engineer Böckler. The work contains a total of 154 full-page engraved plates, depicting a wide variety of mills, waterwheels, and grinding machines, including designs for water-driven perpetual-motion machines. The work is also unusual among Baroque machine books for primarily containing devices that had actually been realized¿not simply the fantasies of inventors who could find a willing engraver. Machines described and pictured include paper mills; gunpowder mills; a fulling mill; a smithy with water-powered bellows; pipe boring mills; grinding apparatus for sharpening tools, knives and weapons; and windmills. The majority are grist mills and water-raising devices powered by water, animals, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORLAND, [Sir Samuel]
London: Moses Pitt, 1673. First edition of the first book on a calculator written in English, and the first separate work on the subject after Napier’s Rabdologiae. There was little else in English on calculating instruments for more than 150 years and the publication of Babbage (1827). The work may also be considered the first comprehensive book in computer literature, as Pascal published nothing about his own machine except an 18-page pamphlet, now of the utmost rarity. Samuel Morland’s devices, which he claimed to be far superior to Napier’s earlier attempts at such machines, consisted of a series of dials whose numbers appeared within windows and which were operated by means of a pen-like object he called the “Index.” “The arithmetical machines, originally presented to Charles II in 1662 [although one plate contains the date 1666], were manufactured for sale by Humphry Adanson, who lived with Jonas Moore, esq., in the Tower of London. By means of them the four fundamental rules of arithmetic were readily worked ‘without charging the memory, disturbing the mind, or exposing the operations to any uncertainty’” (DNB). Aimed at simplifying business transactions, one of the devices was “A new multiplying instrument,” while the other was “A new and most useful Instrument for Addition and Substraction of pounds, shillings, pence, and farthings.” Morland’s calculating machines appear to have been modifications of one constructed by Blaise Pascal about 1642. Though Morland (1625-1695) was recognized as one of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicolò Angelo Tinassi, Roma 1673 - In 8° - pp.176 - Senza legatura - 12 riviste mensili rilegate insieme - Capilettera, testatine e finalini.

ROBERT, Nicolas (1614-85)
Paris: F. Poilly excudit, [no date, but 1673]. Folio. (14 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches). Engraved throughout, 31 plates (the first plate captioned with the title and imprint). Expertly bound to style in 17th century mottled calf, covers with a gilt double ruled border, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Very rare suite of 17th- century ornithological engravings from the greatest natural history artist of his age. This spectacular and very rare suite is reminiscent of the original ornithological watercolours on vellum that Nicolas Robert produced for Gaston d'Orleans and Louis XIV of France. From 1666 onwards, Robert was required (in his role as "Peintre ordinaire du Roi pour la miniature") to supply a minimum of fifty-four original natural history watercolours on vellum a year. Most of Robert's ornithological subjects came from the Ménagerie at Versailles, but he was not tied to working exclusively for the king. He continued to engrave and publish his own work in collaboration with other artists: the present work being a major example. The compositions show some significant improvements on the vélins that Robert produced for the French King: the subjects are shown within fully-realised landscapes and most of the plates include more than one subject, often including both the male and female or showing the bird in a number of characteristic poses: this gives the plates a vivacity that is often lacking from ornithological work where only a single bird or pose is shown. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bologna: Manolessi, 1673.First edition of the very rare catalogue of the books donated by Aprosio to the library which was to bear his name. "Angelo Aprosio of Ventimiglia was in correspondence with most of the learned men of his day, and they sent him many books to read. Aprosio's catalogue of 1673 is a small duodecimo list of these gifts in alphabetical order of the donors' names. The purpose of such a fantastic method of arrangement was presumably to attract more gifts; but the printed catalogue goes no further than the letter C.This catalogue became celebrated as a picture of the learned world in Aprosio's day, and it was translated into Latin by J.C. Wolf at Hamburg in 1734."Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 262-63. Very good copy of an extremely rare book. Brunet, I, 325"Ouvrage rare."
