Text little evenly browned, occasional minor spotting, small worm track to lower blank margin, a bit short at upper margin. Provenance: illegible signature, Trinity College Cambridge (inscribed on first free endpaper), also lettered "Lower" on fore-edge. A very good and clean copy. ---- Wing H1084; Keynes 20; Wellcome III, p.219; Waller 4106. The second English edition of Harvey's celebrated De motu cordis in which he sets forth his discovery and experimental proof of the circulation of the blood. This new edition is virtually a reprint of the first in English of 1653. The translation, described by Keynes as "a vigorous, if unpolished, version... in contemporary language", was based upon the Latin edition published at Rotterdam in 1648. Also included in this edition are a translation of James De Back's treatise on the blood in which he offers a "defence of Harvey's circulation", and Harvey's essays written in response to Jean Riolan's criticisms. - Visit our website for additional images and information.

[POETICAL MISCELLANY]
1673. [Poetry, Verse] ~ VARIANT TEMPLE OF DEATH [POETICAL MISCELLANY] A Collection of poems Written upon several occasions By several persons. With many Additions, Never before in Print London. Printed for Tho. Collins and John Ford...and Will. Cademan, 1673. 8vo. [6], 128, 131-185pp, [1]. Recased in contemporary blind-ruled sheep, later gilt lettering to spine. New endpapers. Late eighteenth-century Porkington Library shelf label to FEP, early ink inscription of 'Ellen Owen' to head of title. Slightly rubbed to extremities, spine a trifle faded and creased. An apparent variant issue (although indeed the only issue recorded by Case), with early female ownership, of the expanded second edition of the famous 'Temple of Death' poetical miscellany, first published in 1672. As with the first (and indeed most subsequent editions of this popular collection), this second edition opens with the Marquis of Normanby's 'Temple of Death', but also includes 31 additional pieces not previously present. Given the setting of the poems and register in this issue appears identical to Wing C5178, one assumes that the pagination, partially corrected to [6], 128, 131-185pp, [1], was changed in the press from the generally encountered edition with pagination [6], 128, 131-183, 182-183pp, [1], whilst the remainder of the setting was left intact. For the uncorrected issue ESTC locates only three copies in the UK (BL, Leeds, Oxford) and just eight further locations in North America. 1673.

Cambridge University Press, 1673. The Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible "The Noblest Monument of English Prose" * Elaborate Fine Binding * Extra-Illustrated * Cambridge, 1673 BIBLE, IN ENGLISH, AUTHORIZED VERSION [The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New], J. Hayes; CAMBRIDGE; 1673. [Herbert's 712.] A fine example for a collector desirous of a representative copy of the crowning jewel of English Bible translation and one of the most desired antiquarian books of all time. The American Bible Society has a similar example with 160 rare steel engravings from cuts by F. H. Van Hove present within the text; this copy has TWO HUNDRED RARE ENGRAVINGS. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than five years and was laboriously attended to by over fifty translators and researchers. Six separate groups were assigned a specific section of the Scriptures and each made a preliminary translation under the direction of Lancelot Andrewes, Edward Lively and John Harding. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed, reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale, Coverdale, Geneva and Bishops' Bibles, it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. John Barclay
B.W.M. Endteri Nurmber. IN LATIN Noribergae, impensis B. W. M. Endteri consortium, et vid. B. Jul. Arnold, Engelrechti, s.d. (1673)., 1673. in-16. 11ff. 708pp. 18ff. et 37 engraving full page. Jean (John) Barclay (1582-1621). First edition in Paris in 1621.Exlibris "Roy Leventritt (1875-1968, art collector". Leather with gold titles. "The no 1 bestseller of the seventeenth century was written in Latin. But, neither the language in which it was composed nor its classical setting put people off. For John Barclay's Argenis was everything a blockbuster novel should be: a tightly written, probing, and exciting work of fiction. It energetically brought to life the swash-buckling adventures of a handsome, young noble, complete with shipwrecks, pirates, and hand-to-hand combat; it sensitively asked whether a charming princess should be forced to marry a man she did not love while the man to whom she had secretly promised herself was absent, pulling together his forces so that he could prove his royal identity to her father; it intelligently reflected on the components of good government; and it sensationally portrayed the darker side of the conduct of political celebrities, exposing secret surveillance, aborted insurgence, and attempted poisoning. The extreme popularity of Argenis among the (mostly male) educated classes quickly swept over the general reading public. Within five years of its 1621 publication, Argenis had been translated into English, French, Spanish, and German. For those who did not have the time or patience to plough through the thousand pages of the original edi … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCCENIUS, Johannes.
Göteborg, Amundi Grefwe, 1673. 8:o. (16),+ 80; (26),+ 948,+ (77) s.+ utvikbar tabell i träsnitt. Samtida pergamentband, lätt skada i övre fals. E. Flemings namnteckning på smutstitelbladet. Collijn sp. 531. Engström s. 121. Almquist s. 115f. Warmholtz 6703. [Click Below for Full Description]
