'LOVER OF HIS COUNTREY, AND WELL-WISHER TO THE PROSPERITY OF THE KING AND KINGDOMS'
London, printed in the year, 1673. 4to., (2) + 92 (i.e. 62) + (2)pp., including the final blank I4 but without the initial blank (A1), very light dampstain on a leaf or two at beginning and end, but a very good crisp copy now well bound in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands and label. Very scarce. Wing G.1491. Goldsmiths 2026. Kress 1338. Massie 905. A veritable manifesto touching on most of the social and economic issues of the day, some of the author's proposals being controversial to say the least, others close to revolutionary. Although the author's purpose was revenue-raising for the crown, the amount of detail contained in this set of proposals makes this perhaps one of the best published portraits of life just after the Restoration, particularly in respect of wages, prices, living and travel costs and so forth. For some comments by a modern scholar, see, e.g. Joyce Appleby's Economic thought and ideology in 17th century England> (1978), pp.146, 189 & 215.

This second English edition is a reprint of the first edition in English of 1653, which Keynes described as ?a vigorous, if unpolished, version of Harvey?s book in contemporary language? JUVENAL, Decimus Junius, and PERSIUS FLACCUS, Aulus
Oxford: W. Downing for F. Oxlad Senior, J. Adams, and F. Oxlad Junior, 1673. Hardcover. First Barten Holyday translation of Juvenal. Folio. pp. [12], 341, [3]. Including 49 engraved illustrations with the notes and 4 fold out plates. The first title page is printed in red and black. The ?"Satyres of Flaccus?" contains a separate title [Oo3]. Oddly, the notes or ?"illustrations to the first satyre?" appear on p. 82 following the fifth satire and its accompanying notes. The pages in signatures P and Q are bound out of order, but all is accounted for. No vertical half-title is present on the last leaf. Bound in full period calf (showing rubbing and wear) with blind stamped panels on the front and rear covers. Spine head and tail caps are neatly restored. An armorial bookplate (dated 1810) is pasted on the inside front cover. Interior pages are generally clean with occasional light marginal spotting. Barten Holyday?'s English translation of Persius Flaccus was first published in 1616. However, his translation of Juvenal was only published posthumously (1673) by his step-son William Dewey along with a reissue of the Persius translation. Holyday produced an almost literal translation of Juvenal?'s works. The English poet John Dryden praised Holyday (in a backhanded way) for the accuracy of his work while at the same time criticizing him for his inability to capture Juvenal?'s poetic voice. The extensive commentaries, however, contain much scholarly information. The engraved illustrations depict various classical scenes, artifacts and architecture. Decimus Junius Juvenalis was a R … [Click Below for Full Description]

Værket findes i to varianter: et uden og et - som her - med de første 20 siders dedikationer (bl.a. til Gabels poltiske modstander Peter Griffenfeld, men for en sikkerheds skyld også til Frederik Gable, Færøernes øverste kongelige embedsmand), forord og vers. FIORAVANTI LEONARDO.
Per il Brigna,, Venetia, 1673. Cm. 15,5, pp. (16) 592. "Both Wallis and Collins wrote in 1672 in the highest terms of their anticipation of this work and on its publication it became a standard authority. BARDI Giovanni.
All'Insegna della Stella 1673 3^edizione. Cm.20,1x14,8. Pg.(4), 36.
