He was a pupil of his father and he worked in Paris together with F. Chéreau. The title-print explicitly says Picart engraved the series in 1728, and the presence of the title on print F1 suggests that the series was issued on its own, perhaps originally without the letter F for the series. Picart himself also published it in a larger series the following year, with a letterpress title-page (Recueil de lions ... Divisé en six livres chacun de six feuilles) bearing a 1729 Amsterdam imprint, a 6-page letterpress "avis", an additional title-print also dated 1729 and giving the place of publication as Amsterdam, and 42 prints on 36 leaves (A1-6, B1-6, C1-6, D1-6, E1-6, F1-12, the F series with 2 prints on each leaf). The present copy is printed on French paper, with only small pieces of the watermark and countermark visible (diifficult to identify) but with a clear watermark date "1742" visible in several leaves. Though French papermakers continued to use the date 1742 for a few years, it gives a fairly close date for … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

sumpt & typis Joannis Baptistae Mayr. First Edition. Rare. A copy of the BN France and Bristol in England, another in catalogs del Germany from the west. A second edition will be launched in 1675 with two new parties. 2 beautiful frontispieces Full Vellum later. As part of the twentieth and black endpapers also. Lace worm on the first 2 pages and last 5. Scattered spots. Otto Aicher (1628-1705), Benedictine and professor, was an Austrian playwright, professor of rhetoric and a grammarian, but also a historian, he brings together in this book epitaphs of all time, including Roman emperors and kings, the whole forming a scene of death as epitaphs are like voices from beyond the grave, the epitaph is the latest sign that the dead leave to posterity. Very interesting to measure the ratio for death in the story. Brunet I, 118. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Trier -
- Kupferstich bei Gérard Jollain, Paris nach 1673. Ca. 23 x 39 cm (Darstellung), dazu Text unten ca. 3,8 cm hoch. Sehr selten.

Maynwaringe [Maynwaring] (Everard)
London: Printed by J. M. John Macock and Sold by the Booksellers 1673 - FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 160 x 100 mms., pp. [viii], 215 [216 blank], recently rebound in full antique-style panelled calf, morocco label, new end-papers; title-page soiled, but text otherwise clean. A fine copy. n. Everard Maynwaring (born 1627/8 died?) received his Bachelor of Medicine from Cambridge in 1645, aged 17. This study of venereal disease, specifically syphilis, associates its presence in Europe with the year 1492 and "the conduct of Columbus into America, to discover that part of the unknown World." The Spaniards picked up "this Indian Commodity" because they "eased themselves of some of their "superfluous Women (of the worst sort we may well imagine), such as were over-ridden and notably seasoned with the Indian Itch." The Spaniards passed it to the French and thence to the rest of the known world. Roy Porter, in his history of medicine, The Greatest Benefit to Mankind (1997) notes that "it was called the 'disease of Naples', but rapidly became the 'French Pox' and other terms accusing this or that nation: the Spanish disease in Holland, the Polish disease in Russia, the Russian disease in Siberia, the Christian disease in Turkey and the Portuguese disease in Indain and Japan. For their part, the Portuguese called it the Castilian disease, and a couple of centuries later Captain Cook (1728-79), exploring the Pacific, rued that the Tahitians 'call the venereal disease Apud no Britainnia- the British disease' (he thought they'd caught it from the French). MANZIUS, Caspar :
Ingolstadt., 1673. Liten folio. Samtidg speilbindmed rik opphøyde ryggbånd og rik ryggforgylling. (4), 164, 156, (1), (1 blank) s.. Latin.
