The Description and Use of Two Arithmetick Instruments

London: Moses Pitt, 1673. First edition of the first book on a calculator written in English, and the first separate work on the subject after Napier’s Rabdologiae. There was little else in English on calculating instruments for more than 150 years and the publication of Babbage (1827). The work may also be considered the first comprehensive book in computer literature, as Pascal published nothing about his own machine except an 18-page pamphlet, now of the utmost rarity. Samuel Morland’s devices, which he claimed to be far superior to Napier’s earlier attempts at such machines, consisted of a series of dials whose numbers appeared within windows and which were operated by means of a pen-like object he called the “Index.” “The arithmetical machines, originally presented to Charles II in 1662 [although one plate contains the date 1666], were manufactured for sale by Humphry Adanson, who lived with Jonas Moore, esq., in the Tower of London. By means of them the four fundamental rules of arithmetic were readily worked ‘without charging the memory, disturbing the mind, or exposing the operations to any uncertainty’” (DNB). Aimed at simplifying business transactions, one of the devices was “A new multiplying instrument,” while the other was “A new and most useful Instrument for Addition and Substraction of pounds, shillings, pence, and farthings.” Morland’s calculating machines appear to have been modifications of one constructed by Blaise Pascal about 1642. Though Morland (1625-1695) was recognized as one of the most inventive minds of his age, his calculating machines did not meet with widespread approval. Pepys characterized one that he saw as very pretty but not very useful, while Robert Hooke, for example, found them “very silly”! (Taylor, The Mathematical Practitioners of Tudor and Stuart England, p. 386). Morland was responsible for many other ingenious inventions, including his “Perpetual almanac” (which forms an addendum to the present book); the speaking-trumpet; and a pioneering mechanical device for raising water, a significant improvement on contemporary English fire engines that would be subsequently developed by Jean de Hauteville and by Huygens (1679). His work obtained the interest and occasional financial support of King Charles II, who named Morland his “Master of Mechanicks” in 1681. With a notoriously complicated collation, virtually every copy of Morland’s Description is made up somewhat differently; this example lacks the first four leaves of the “Explanation of the Perpetual Almanack” in the appended texts, but is otherwise more complete than the majority of copies we have examined. This copy includes the commonly lacking portrait, and also the cancelandum at F8 (the second cancelandum, G8, may in fact be the engraved title of the “Perpetual Almanack,” which is bound after the second B signature). According to Wing, the work appears in two issues, in the earlier of which the 10 engravings of the instrument are pasted on the blank versos of the first A signature. This copy, the second issue, has the first six plates (as well as those tables in the second A signature) printed directly on the appropriate pages, while the remaining four instruments are found uncut on a folding plate. The unsigned folding table “for the ready finding of what Sign the Moon is in” (here in duplicate) appears to be explicated by leaves G3-7. The final 16 pages of the volume contain “A table shewing the beginning of every King’s reign, from the Conquest…,” “Advice touching the posts, and roads…” and “Forreign weights and measures,” signed at the end by Jonas Moore. With thanks to Dr. Georgianna Ziegler of the Folger and David Whitesell of Harvard for their assistance.Provenance: Sir Nathaniel Herne (c. 1629-1679), an alderman of London, from an established Norfolk family whose estate Broomfields was on Bethnal Green in the East End. Subsequently disbursed from the scientific library of the Earls of Macclesfield. * Wing M27777, Taylor 358.. 8vo., (3) ff. including engraved portrait and two title pages (the second dated 1672), one with full-page plate on verso, 10 ff. (where f. 7 is a large folding plate), 11-78 (i.e. 82, with frequent mispaginations) pp., (22) [recte 24] ff., 16 pp., with numerous typeset tables. In total: portrait, 11 engraved plates (one folding with 4 images) and 9 engraved tables (including one folding table in duplicate). Lacking first 4 ff. of second A signature; while copies usually lack the cancels F8 and G8, F8 is present here. Bound in contemporary blind-ruled calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red morocco title label, edges worn. Ex libris of Macclesfield library on front pastedown, raised stamps on title and portrait, ownership inscription of Nathaniel Herne on second title. A few ink annotations throughout, generally very good.

Britannia: or, a Geographical Description of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, with the Isles and Territories thereto belonging. And for The better perfecting of the said Work, there is added an Alphabetical Table

LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general description of the Isles of Britain, county sections and an alphabetical account of the Nobility and Gentry by county. The maps remaining are the Map of London and a fold out map of the Isles of Wight, 'Iarsey', 'Garnsay', Sarke, Man, Orcades and Shetland. The contents are in very good condition - the maps being clearly removed by a previous owner to sell/put on walls separately. There are decorative head pieces. There is a red wax seal to the top of the title page and there are some ink annotations to the Coats of Arms section. There are occasional small repaired paper tears to the bottom margin of pages not affecting text. There is some browning to page edges. Overall a lovely copy and an opportunity to obtain a very rare work at a more affordable price.

La Biblioteca Aprosiana. Passatempo autunnale... -

Bologna, Manolessi, 1673.In-12. Brunet I, 325. Breslauer & Folter 67. First edition of one of the earliest and most comprehensive select bibliographies of Italian literature. The work contains the author's autobiography (261 pp.), and the list of books in his library, a large number of which had been donated to him by scholars with whom he was in correspondence. An unusual feature of the catalogue is the arrangement in alphabetical order of donors, presumably done to attract more gifts; both parts are replete with biographical and bibliographical information. Although the work ends with letter C, and remained incomplete, it provides a very interesting picture of the learned world in Aprosio's day. An uncut and particularly fine copy, bound by J. Thouvenin for Renouard in straight-grained red morocco (it is described in his ?Catalogue de la bibliothèque d'un Amateur?), and later in Breslauer?s collection of early bibliographies.

Esemplare attraente.

Dell'Istoria della Compagnia di Giesù. L'Italia. Prima parte dell'Europa descritta.

in Roma, Presso il Varese, 1673. 1673 In-folio (355x240mm), pp. (4), 534, (8), solida legatura ottocentesca m. pergamena con fregi in oro e titolo in oro su doppio tassello in pelle bicroma al dorso. Emblema gesuita al frontespizio. Timbro di duplicato di biblioteca in data 1816. Qualche fioritura e brunitura usuale. Ottimo esemplare. De Backer / Sommervogel, I, 978 e sgg. Brunet, I, 683. Graesse, I, p. 303. Gamba, 1773. Razzolini, pp. 41-42. Vinciana, 4905. Belloni, pp. 458-460. Mazzucchelli, II, pp. 436-437. Cfr.

Manno, I, 1120. Cat. Vinciana, 2313.

Nicolò Angelo Tinassi 1673 In 8° - pp.176 - Senza legatura - 12 riviste mensili rilegate insieme - Capilettera, testatine e finalini.

The Blessedness of the Righteous opened, and Further Recommended from the Consideration of the Vanity of this Mortal Life in Two Treatises

Printed by A. Maxwell for Sa. Gellibrand London: Printed by A. Maxwell, for Sa. Gellibrand. 1673. First. Second edition (first published in 1668). Small octavo. 514, [12], 96pp. Probably late 18th or early 19th century American full calf gilt. Joints a little tender but sound and tight, small strip cut from the top of the title page, presumably to remove a name, a very good copy. Ownership signature (twice) of Rev. Frederick T. Tiffany of Cooperstown, New York, with a couple of ink notes in the text, probably in his hand. Tiffany was the Episcopalian Rector of Cooperstown, and according to some sources, the model for Rev. Mr. Grant in fellow townsman James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Pioneers, probably the reason why there exists a record of Tiffany suing Cooper for libel, although we have yet to determine how that worked out. Tiffany later became Chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives. The author, John Howe was a Puritan cleric and chaplain to Oliver Cromwell. OCLC locates no copies of the first edition, and two physical copies of this edition (and innumerable microfilmed copies); Copac adds several more in the U.K. .

Uppsala, Henricus Curio, 1673. 8:o. (10),+ 256, (22) s. Sid. 129-130 lagad, med viss textförlust. Välbevarat samtida pergamentband med äldre handtextad, delvis trasig, titeletikett. Lätt skada på främre pärmens nedre framkant. Ur Abraham Hülphers bibliotek, med hans namnteckning, daterad 1766. L. F. Rääfs exlibris. Collijn sp. 164. Warmholtz 1883.

        Monasticon Anglicanum

Richard Hodgkinsonne 3 volumes, folio, contemporary leather, modern rebacking in leather, new endsheets, illustrated with engraved pre title, some text illustrations and 108 plates many folding, [40], 1151; 3, [14], 2, 1057; [6], 378, 218, [379-392 first index in volume 3] pp. Leather scuffed in places, one plate missing top half, a second possibly missing bottom portion of plate, but image appears complete, another plate upside down, some soiling, foxing and normal aging, a few pages with tears, but not affecting text; overall nice set of a very rare first edition. William Dugdale (1605-1681) was born at the Shustoke rectory to an old Lancashire family, and was educated at the King Henry VIII School in Coventry. As a young man, he showed an inclination for antiquarian studies, and through a relationship with Sir Christopher Hatton was commissioned to make exact drafts of all the churches in England in 1641. After a visit to France in 1648 he continued his antiquarian studies in London, and collaborated with Richard Dodsworth on his Monasticon Anglicanum, which was published in 1655, 1661, and 1673. It has been reported that Dugdale himself sold copies to booksellers who passed them along to a small, but appreciative audience. The work provided a history of the various orders in England, and an account of the individual monasteries. While other major editions of this work were published in 1693, 1718 and 1846, because each volume was published separately, it is very difficult to find a complete set of the first edition. It is difficult to determine the right number of plates for this edition, but it appears this set has 108. The 1718 edition seems to have a larger number of plates. Dugdale's other major works include Antiquaries of Warwichshire (1656) and History of St. Paul's Cathedral (1658). The set includes a letter dated November 30, 1956 from a bookseller acknowledging the sale of the set to a buyer.

Almquist, Bibliografisk förteckning över stridskrifter, A 1a.

Expertly bound to style in 17th century mottled calf, covers with a gilt double ruled border, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Very rare suite of 17th- century ornithological engravings from the greatest natural history artist of his age. This spectacular and very rare suite is reminiscent of the original ornithological watercolours on vellum that Nicolas Robert produced for Gaston d'Orleans and Louis XIV of France. From 1666 onwards, Robert was required (in his role as "Peintre ordinaire du Roi pour la miniature") to supply a minimum of fifty-four original natural history watercolours on vellum a year. Most of Robert's ornithological subjects came from the Ménagerie at Versailles, but he was not tied to working exclusively for the king. He continued to engrave and publish his own work in collaboration with other artists: the present work being a major example. The compositions show some significant improvements on the vélins that Robert produced for the French King: the subjects are shown within fully-realised landscapes and most of the plates include more than one subject, often including both the male and female or showing the bird in a number of characteristic poses: this gives the plates a vivacity that is often lacking from ornithological work where only a single bird or pose is shown. The birds shown are a mixture of the familiar and the exotic. The birds are clearly all drawn from actual specimens. They are always identifiable, and the plates include integral engraved titles which give the bird's name in Latin and French. Sometimes these identifications appear strange to the modern viewer: the turkey vulture is bizarrely identified as a 'Pelican', but the identification of the great auks as 'Pinguins' can be explained: the large flightless birds from the northern hemisphere were originally known as 'Pinguins' or penguins, and when large flightless birds were found in the southern hemisphere they were given the same name. (16),+ 80; (26),+ 948,+ (77) s.+ utvikbar tabell i träsnitt. Samtida pergamentband, lätt skada i övre fals. E. Flemings namnteckning på smutstitelbladet. Collijn sp. 531. Engström s. 121. Almquist s. 115f. Warmholtz 6703.

Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 828. Lindberg Swedish books 28. Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 705.
